Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are mainly produced by plants. Cane sugar, glucose and starch are common examples. Most have the general formula Cx(H₂O)y — hence the old name “hydrates of carbon” (glucose C₆H₁₂O₆ = C₆(H₂O)₆). But the definition fails both ways: rhamnose, C₆H₁₂O₅, is a carbohydrate that does not fit the formula, while acetic acid, CH₃COOH = C₂(H₂O)₂, fits it but is not a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates zyadatar plants banate hain. Cane sugar, glucose aur starch common examples hain. Zyadatar ka general formula Cx(H₂O)y hai — isliye purana naam “hydrates of carbon” (glucose C₆H₁₂O₆ = C₆(H₂O)₆). Par yeh definition dono taraf se fail hoti hai: rhamnose, C₆H₁₂O₅, carbohydrate hai par formula mein fit nahi hota, jabki acetic acid, CH₃COOH = C₂(H₂O)₂, formula mein fit hota hai par carbohydrate nahi hai.“Hydrate of carbon” is only an old name; the real definition is chemical.
Carbohydrates ka classification
Carbohydrates are classified by their behaviour on hydrolysis into three groups: (i) Monosaccharides — cannot be hydrolysed further to a simpler polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone; about 20 occur in nature, e.g. glucose, fructose, ribose. (ii) Oligosaccharides — give two to ten monosaccharide units on hydrolysis; by the number of units they are disaccharides (sucrose → glucose + fructose; maltose → two glucose), trisaccharides, tetrasaccharides and so on. (iii) Polysaccharides — give a large number of monosaccharide units, e.g. starch, cellulose, glycogen, gums. Polysaccharides are not sweet in taste and are called non-sugars. Carbohydrates ko hydrolysis par unke behaviour se teen groups mein baanta jata hai: (i) Monosaccharides — inka aur simple polyhydroxy aldehyde ya ketone mein hydrolysis nahi hota; nature mein lagbhag 20 milte hain, jaise glucose, fructose, ribose. (ii) Oligosaccharides — hydrolysis par do se das monosaccharide units dete hain; units ki ginti se disaccharides (sucrose → glucose + fructose; maltose → do glucose), trisaccharides, tetrasaccharides wagairah. (iii) Polysaccharides — bahut saari monosaccharide units dete hain, jaise starch, cellulose, glycogen, gums. Polysaccharides meethe nahi hote aur non-sugars kehlate hain. One unit = mono; 2–10 units = oligo; many units = poly.
Classification of carbohydrates6 tappable partsOpenCarbohydrates are also classed as reducing sugars — those that reduce Fehling’s solution and Tollens’ reagent — and non-reducing sugars. All monosaccharides, whether aldose or ketose, are reducing sugars. In a disaccharide, if the reducing groups (aldehydic or ketonic) of both units are bonded together, it is non-reducing (sucrose); if one of them stays free, it is reducing (maltose, lactose). Carbohydrates ko reducing sugars — jo Fehling’s solution aur Tollens’ reagent ko reduce karein — aur non-reducing sugars mein bhi baanta jata hai. Saare monosaccharides, aldose ho ya ketose, reducing sugars hain. Disaccharide mein agar dono units ke reducing groups (aldehyde ya ketone) aapas mein bonded hon to woh non-reducing hai (sucrose); agar ek free rahe to reducing (maltose, lactose).Free reducing group → reducing sugar. Both used up in the bond → non-reducing.
Monosaccharides
Monosaccharides are further classified by the number of carbon atoms and the functional group present. An aldehyde group makes it an aldose; a keto group makes it a ketose. Combining the two: a six-carbon aldose is an aldohexose (glucose); a six-carbon ketose is a ketohexose (fructose). NCERT सारणी 10.1 इन्हें दिखाती है:Monosaccharides ko carbon atoms ki ginti aur maujood functional group ke hisaab se aur baanta jata hai. Aldehyde group ho to aldose; keto group ho to ketose. Dono milakar: six-carbon aldose aldohexose (glucose); six-carbon ketose ketohexose (fructose). NCERT Table 10.1 inhe dikhati hai:

How the open-chain structure of glucose was provedग्लूकोस की खुली श्रृंखला संरचना कैसे सिद्ध हुईHow the open-chain structure of glucose was proved7 tappable parts · 3DOpenThe exact spatial arrangement of the –OH groups was given by Fischer after studying many other properties. Its configuration is correctly represented as the open-chain structure (Fischer projection). Glucose is correctly named D-(+)-glucose: “D” is the configuration, and “(+)” means it is dextrorotatory. The “D” or “L” has no relation with optical activity — it compares the configuration with that of glyceraldehyde: (+)-isomer of glyceraldehyde has the –OH on the right and is called D-(+)-glyceraldehyde; the (–)-isomer has –OH on the left and is L-(–)-glyceraldehyde. To assign D or L to glucose, look at the lowest asymmetric carbon (C-5): its –OH is on the right, as in D-glyceraldehyde, so glucose is D.–OH –OH groups ki exact spatial arrangement Fischer ne kai doosri properties padhne ke baad di. The α-form (m.p. 419 K) is obtained by crystallisation from a concentrated solution of glucose at 303 K; the β-form (m.p. 423 K) by crystallisation from a hot, saturated aqueous solution at 371 K.ग्लूकोस की चक्रीय संरचना। Glucose ka cyclic structure. These facts are explained if one of the –OH groups adds to the –CHO group to form a cyclic hemiacetal. Glucose forms a six-membered ring in which the –OH at C-5 is involved in ring formation. This leaves no free –CHO group and makes C-1 a new asymmetric centre, so two cyclic forms exist: α and β. These two forms are called anomers, and C-1 is the anomeric carbon. The six-membered cyclic structure is called the pyranose structure (α- or β-), by analogy with pyran, a cyclic organic compound with one oxygen atom and five carbon atoms in the ring. The cyclic structure is drawn more correctly by the Haworth structure. Ye facts samajh aate hain agar koi ek –OH group –CHO group se judkar cyclic hemiacetal bana le. Glucose ek six-membered ring banata hai jismein C-5 ka –OH ring banane mein hissa leta hai. Isse koi free –CHO nahi bachta aur C-1 ek naya asymmetric centre ban jata hai, isliye do cyclic forms hote hain: α aur β. In dono ko anomers kehte hain, aur C-1 anomeric carbon hai. Six-membered cyclic structure ko pyranose structure (α- ya β-) kehte hain, pyran ki analogy par — ek cyclic organic compound jiske ring mein ek oxygen aur paanch carbon atoms hain. Structure of fructose. Fructose also has the molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₆ and, on the basis of its reactions, it was found to contain a ketonic functional group at C-2 and six carbons in a straight chain, as in glucose. It belongs to the D-series and is a laevorotatory compound, so it is written as D-(–)-fructose. It also exists in two cyclic forms, obtained by the addition of the –OH at C-5 to the >C=O group. The ring is five-membered and is named furanose by analogy with the compound furan (a five-membered ring with one oxygen and four carbon atoms). Fructose ka structure. Depending upon the relative position of the amino group with respect to the carboxyl group, they are classified as α, β, γ, δ and so on. Only α-amino acids are obtained on hydrolysis of proteins. They may contain other functional groups also. All α-amino acids have trivial names, which usually reflect a property of the compound or its source: glycine is so named because it has a sweet taste (Greek *glykos*, sweet), and tyrosine was first obtained from cheese (Greek *tyros*, cheese). Amino acids are generally represented by a three-letter symbol, sometimes by a one-letter symbol. Amino acids mein amino (–NH₂) aur carboxyl (–COOH) functional groups hote hain. Amino acids ka classification
Amino acids are classified as acidic, basic or neutral depending upon the relative number of amino and carboxyl groups in their molecule. Equal number of amino and carboxyl groups makes it neutral; more amino than carboxyl groups makes it basic (e.g. lysine); and more carboxyl groups compared to amino groups makes it acidic (e.g. aspartic acid, glutamic acid). The amino acids which can be synthesised in the body are known as non-essential amino acids. On the other hand, those which cannot be synthesised in the body and must be obtained through diet are known as essential amino acids (marked with an asterisk in Table 10.2). Molecule mein amino aur carboxyl groups ki relative ginti ke hisaab se amino acids acidic, basic ya neutral hote hain. Amino aur carboxyl groups barabar hon to neutral; carboxyl se zyada amino hon to basic (jaise lysine); aur amino se zyada carboxyl hon to acidic (jaise aspartic acid, glutamic acid). Jo amino acids body mein ban sakte hain woh non-essential amino acids kehlate hain. Iske ulat, jo body mein nahi ban sakte aur diet se lene padte hain woh essential amino acids hain (Table 10.2 mein asterisk wale).More –NH₂ = basic, more –COOH = acidic, equal = neutral. Essential = must come from food (ten of them).
Amino acids are usually colourless, crystalline solids. They are water-soluble, high-melting solids and behave like salts rather than simple amines or carboxylic acids. This is due to the presence of both acidic (carboxyl) and basic (amino) groups in the same molecule. In aqueous solution, the carboxyl group can lose a proton and the amino group can accept a proton, giving rise to a dipolar ion known as the zwitter ion. This is neutral but contains both positive and negative charges. In zwitter ionic form, amino acids show amphoteric behaviour as they react both with acids and bases. Amino acids aksar colourless, crystalline solids hote hain. Ye water-soluble, high-melting solids hain aur simple amines ya carboxylic acids ki jagah salts jaisa behave karte hain. Iski wajah ek hi molecule mein acidic (carboxyl) aur basic (amino) dono groups ka hona hai. Aqueous solution mein carboxyl group ek proton kho sakta hai aur amino group ek proton le sakta hai, jisse dipolar ion banta hai jise zwitter ion kehte hain. Yeh neutral hai par ismein positive aur negative dono charges hain. Zwitter ion form mein amino acids amphoteric behaviour dikhate hain, kyunki ye acids aur bases dono se react karte hain.Inside one molecule, –COOH gives its H⁺ to –NH₂ → ⁺H₃N–CHR–COO⁻ (zwitter ion), which reacts with both acid and base.
Except glycine, all the naturally occurring α-amino acids are optically active, since the α-carbon atom is asymmetric. These exist both in ‘D’ and ‘L’ forms. Most naturally occurring amino acids have the L-configuration. L-Amino acids are represented by writing the –NH₂ group on the left-hand side (in the Fischer projection). Glycine ko chhodkar saare natural α-amino acids optically active hain, kyunki α-carbon asymmetric hai. Proteins ka structure
Proteins are the polymers of α-amino acids and they are connected to each other by a peptide bond or peptide linkage. Chemically, a peptide linkage is an amide formed between the –COOH group and the –NH₂ group. The reaction between two molecules of similar or different amino acids proceeds through the combination of the amino group of one molecule with the carboxyl group of the other. This results in the elimination of a water molecule and the formation of a peptide bond –CO–NH–. The product of the reaction is called a dipeptide because it is made up of two amino acids. For example, when the carboxyl group of glycine combines with the amino group of alanine we get a dipeptide, glycylalanine. Proteins α-amino acids ke polymers hain jo peptide bond ya peptide linkage se jude hote hain. A tripeptide contains three amino acids linked by two peptide linkages. Similarly, when four, five or six amino acids are linked, the respective products are known as tetrapeptide, pentapeptide or hexapeptide. When the number of such amino acids is more than ten, the product is called a polypeptide. A polypeptide with more than a hundred amino acid residues, having molecular mass higher than 10,000 u, is called a protein. However, the distinction between a polypeptide and a protein is not very sharp. Polypeptides with fewer amino acids are likely to be called proteins if they ordinarily have a well-defined conformation of a protein, such as insulin, which contains 51 amino acids. Agar dipeptide se teesra amino acid jude to product tripeptide kehlata hai, jismein teen amino acids do peptide bonds se jude hain. Proteins can be classified into two types on the basis of their molecular shape. (a) Fibrous proteins: when the polypeptide chains run parallel and are held together by hydrogen and disulphide bonds, a fibre-like structure is formed. Such proteins are generally insoluble in water. Some common examples are keratin (present in hair, wool, silk) and myosin (present in muscles). (b) Globular proteins: this structure results when the chains of polypeptides coil around to give a spherical shape. These are usually soluble in water. Insulin and albumins are common examples. Molecular shape ke basis par proteins do type ke hote hain. (a) Fibrous proteins: jab polypeptide chains parallel chalti hain aur hydrogen aur disulphide bonds se judi rehti hain, to fibre jaisa structure banta hai. Aise proteins aksar paani mein insoluble hote hain. Common examples keratin (baal, oon, silk mein) aur myosin (muscles mein) hain. (b) Globular proteins: yeh structure tab banta hai jab polypeptide chains coil hokar spherical shape leti hain. Ye aksar paani mein soluble hote hain. Insulin aur albumins common examples hain.Fibrous: parallel chains, insoluble (keratin, myosin). Globular: balled up, soluble (insulin, albumin).
The structure and shape of proteins can be studied at four different levels — primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary — each level being more complex than the previous one. (i) Primary structure: proteins may have one or more polypeptide chains. Each polypeptide in a protein has amino acids linked with each other in a specific sequence, and it is this sequence of amino acids that is said to be the primary structure of that protein. Any change in this primary structure, i.e., the sequence of amino acids, creates a different protein. Proteins ke structure aur shape ko chaar levels par padha jaata hai — primary, secondary, tertiary aur quaternary — har level pichhle se zyada complex. (i) Primary structure: protein mein ek ya zyada polypeptide chains ho sakti hain. Har polypeptide mein amino acids ek specific sequence mein jude hote hain, aur amino acids ka yahi sequence us protein ka primary structure hai. Is primary structure, yaani amino acids ke sequence, mein koi bhi badlav ek alag protein bana deta hai.Primary = the order of amino acids. Change the order → a different protein.
(ii) Secondary structure: this refers to the shape in which a long polypeptide chain can exist. They are found to exist in two different types of structures, α-helix and β-pleated sheet. These structures arise due to the regular folding of the backbone of the polypeptide chain due to hydrogen bonding between >C=O and –NH– groups of the peptide bond. The α-helix is one of the most common ways in which a polypeptide chain forms all possible hydrogen bonds by twisting into a right-handed screw (helix), with the –NH group of each amino acid residue hydrogen bonded to the >C=O of an adjacent turn of the helix. In the β-structure, all peptide chains are stretched out to nearly maximum extension and then laid side by side, held together by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The structure resembles the pleated folds of drapery and is therefore known as the β-pleated sheet.(ii) (ii) Secondary structure: yeh us shape ko batata hai jismein lambi polypeptide chain reh sakti hai. Ye do type ke hote hain: α-helix aur β-pleated sheet. Ye structures peptide bond ke >C=O aur –NH– groups ke beech hydrogen bonding ki wajah se polypeptide chain ke backbone ke regular fold hone se bante hain. α-helix woh sabse common tareeka hai jismein polypeptide chain right-handed screw (helix) mein mudkar saare possible hydrogen bonds banati hai; har amino acid residue ka –NH group helix ke paas wale turn ke >C=O se hydrogen bonded rehta hai. β-structure mein saari peptide chains lagbhag maximum failkar side by side rakhi hoti hain aur intermolecular hydrogen bonds se judi rehti hain. Yeh structure parde ki pleats jaisa dikhta hai, isliye β-pleated sheet kehlata hai.Secondary = local folding held by C=O···H–N hydrogen bonds: α-helix (right-handed coil) or β-pleated sheet (side-by-side chains).

It gives rise to two major molecular shapes, fibrous and globular. (iv) Quaternary structure: some of the proteins are composed of two or more polypeptide chains referred to as sub-units. The spatial arrangement of these sub-units with respect to each other is known as the quaternary structure. NCERT Fig 10.4 shows all four levels for haemoglobin.(iii) (iii) Tertiary structure: proteins ka tertiary structure polypeptide chains ke overall folding ko dikhata hai, yaani secondary structure ka aur mudna. A protein found in a biological system with a unique three-dimensional structure and biological activity is called a native protein. When a protein in its native form is subjected to a physical change like a change in temperature or a chemical change like a change in pH, the hydrogen bonds are disturbed. Due to this, globules unfold and helices get uncoiled, and the protein loses its biological activity. This is called denaturation of protein. During denaturation, 2° and 3° structures are destroyed but the 1° structure remains intact. The coagulation of egg white on boiling is a common example of denaturation. Another example is the curdling of milk, which is caused by the formation of lactic acid by the bacteria present in milk. Biological system mein unique three-dimensional structure aur biological activity wala protein native protein kehlata hai. Jab native protein par physical change jaise temperature ka badlav ya chemical change jaise pH ka badlav kiya jaata hai, to hydrogen bonds bigad jaate hain. Isse globules khul jaate hain, helix khul jaate hain aur protein apni biological activity kho deta hai. Ise protein ka denaturation kehte hain. Denaturation mein 2° aur 3° structures toot jaate hain par 1° structure bacha rehta hai. Ubaalne par ande ki safedi ka jamna denaturation ka common example hai. Doosra example doodh ka dahi banna hai, jo doodh mein maujood bacteria dwara lactic acid banne se hota hai.Heat or pH breaks the H-bonds → the fold is lost and so is the activity. Life is possible due to the coordination of various chemical reactions in living organisms — for example, the digestion of food, absorption of appropriate molecules and ultimately the production of energy. This process involves a sequence of reactions, and all these reactions occur in the body under very mild conditions. This occurs with the help of certain biocatalysts called enzymes. Almost all the enzymes are globular proteins. Enzymes are very specific for a particular reaction and for a particular substrate. They are generally named after the compound or class of compounds upon which they work. For example, the enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of maltose into glucose is named maltase. Sometimes enzymes are also named after the reaction where they are used: the enzymes which catalyse the oxidation of one substrate with simultaneous reduction of another substrate are named oxidoreductase enzymes. The ending of the name of an enzyme is -ase. Living organisms mein alag-alag chemical reactions ke coordination se hi life possible hai — jaise khane ka digestion, sahi molecules ka absorption aur aakhir mein energy ka production. Enzymes are needed only in small quantities for the progress of a reaction. Similar to the action of chemical catalysts, enzymes are said to reduce the magnitude of activation energy. For example, NCERT gives the activation energy for the acid hydrolysis of sucrose as 6.22 kJ mol⁻¹, while it is only 2.15 kJ mol⁻¹ when sucrose is hydrolysed by the enzyme sucrase. Lower barrier → many more molecules can react at body temperature. Reaction ke liye enzymes sirf thodi matra mein chahiye. Most of the vitamins cannot be synthesised in our body, but plants can synthesise almost all of them, so they are considered essential food factors. However, the bacteria of the gut can produce some of the vitamins required by us. All the vitamins are generally available in our diet. Different vitamins belong to various chemical classes, and it is difficult to define them on the basis of structure. They are generally regarded as organic compounds required in the diet in small amounts to perform specific biological functions for normal maintenance of optimum growth and health of the organism. Dekha gaya hai ki kuch organic compounds hamari diet mein thodi matra mein zaroori hain, par inki kami se specific diseases hoti hain. Vitamins are designated by alphabets A, B, C, D, etc. Some of them are further named as sub-groups, e.g. B₁, B₂, B₆, B₁₂, etc. Excess of vitamins is also harmful, and vitamin pills should not be taken without the advice of a doctor. The term “Vitamine” was coined from the words vital + amine, since the earlier identified compounds had amino groups. Later work showed that most of them did not contain amino groups, so the letter ‘e’ was dropped and the term vitamin is used these days. Vitamins ko A, B, C, D wagairah letters se dikhaya jaata hai. Vitamins are classified into two groups depending upon their solubility in water or fat. They are stored in liver and adipose (fat-storing) tissues. (ii) Water-soluble vitamins: B group vitamins and vitamin C are soluble in water, so they are grouped together. Water-soluble vitamins must be supplied regularly in the diet because they are readily excreted in urine and cannot be stored (except vitamin B₁₂) in our body. Paani ya fat mein solubility ke basis par vitamins do groups mein baante jaate hain. Complete hydrolysis of DNA (or RNA) yields a pentose sugar, phosphoric acid and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (called bases). In DNA molecules, the sugar moiety is β-D-2-deoxyribose, whereas in RNA it is β-D-ribose. DNA contains four bases, viz. adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T). RNA also contains four bases: the first three are the same as in DNA, but the fourth one is uracil (U).DNA DNA (ya RNA) ka complete hydrolysis ek pentose sugar, phosphoric acid aur nitrogen-wale heterocyclic compounds (bases) deta hai. A unit formed by the attachment of a base to the 1′ position of the sugar is known as a nucleoside. In nucleosides, the sugar carbons are numbered as 1′, 2′, 3′, etc. in order to distinguish these from the atoms of the bases. When a nucleoside is linked to phosphoric acid at the 5′-position of the sugar moiety, we get a nucleotide. James Watson and Francis Crick gave a double strand helix structure for DNA (NCERT Fig 10.7). Two nucleic acid chains are wound about each other and held together by hydrogen bonds between pairs of bases. The two strands are complementary to each other because the hydrogen bonds are formed between specific pairs of bases: adenine forms hydrogen bonds with thymine, whereas cytosine forms hydrogen bonds with guanine. In the secondary structure of RNA, a single-stranded helix is present, which sometimes folds back on itself. RNA molecules are of three types and they perform different functions: messenger RNA (m-RNA), ribosomal RNA (r-RNA) and transfer RNA (t-RNA). Nucleic acids ka secondary structure bhi hota hai. DNA is the chemical basis of heredity and may be regarded as the reserve of genetic information. DNA is exclusively responsible for maintaining the identity of different species of organisms over millions of years. A DNA molecule is capable of self-duplication during cell division, and identical DNA strands are transferred to daughter cells. Another important function of nucleic acids is protein synthesis in the cell. Actually, the proteins are synthesised by various RNA molecules in the cell, but the message for the synthesis of a particular protein is present in DNA.DNA DNA molecule cell division ke time khud ki copy bana sakta hai, aur identical DNA strands daughter cells mein jaate hain. Nucleic acids ka ek aur important kaam cell mein protein synthesis hai. Asal mein proteins cell mein alag-alag RNA molecules banate hain, par kisi khaas protein ke synthesis ka message DNA mein hota hai.DNA stores and copies the genetic message; RNA uses it to build proteins.
Hormones
Hormones are molecules that act as intercellular messengers. These are produced by endocrine glands in the body and are poured directly into the blood stream, which transports them to the site of action. In terms of chemical nature, some of these are steroids, e.g. estrogens and androgens; some are polypeptides, for example insulin and endorphins; and some others are amino acid derivatives such as epinephrine and norepinephrine. Hormones woh molecules hain jo intercellular messengers ka kaam karte hain. They help to maintain the balance of biological activities in the body. The role of insulin in keeping the blood glucose level within a narrow limit is an example: insulin is released in response to the rapid rise in blood glucose level. On the other hand, the hormone glucagon tends to increase the glucose level in the blood. The two hormones together regulate the glucose level in the blood. Epinephrine and norepinephrine mediate responses to external stimuli. Growth hormones and sex hormones play a role in growth and development. Hormones ke body mein kai kaam hain. Epinephrine aur norepinephrine bahari stimuli ke response mein madad karte hain. Growth hormones aur sex hormones growth aur development mein role nibhaate hain.Insulin lowers blood glucose, glucagon raises it — together they balance it.
Thyroxine, produced in the thyroid gland, is an iodinated derivative of the amino acid tyrosine. An abnormally low level of thyroxine leads to hypothyroidism, characterised by lethargy and obesity; an increased level causes hyperthyroidism. Low level of iodine in the diet may lead to hypothyroidism and enlargement of the thyroid gland. This condition is largely being controlled by adding sodium iodide to commercial table salt (“iodised” salt). Thyroid gland mein banne wala thyroxine amino acid tyrosine ka iodinated derivative hai. Thyroxine ka abnormally kam level hypothyroidism karta hai, jismein susti aur motapa hote hain; badha hua level hyperthyroidism karta hai. Diet mein iodine kam hone se hypothyroidism aur thyroid gland ka badhna ho sakta hai. Ise kaafi had tak table salt mein sodium iodide milaakar (“iodised” salt) control kiya ja raha hai.Thyroxine (from tyrosine + iodine): too little → hypothyroidism; iodised salt helps.
Steroid hormones are produced by the adrenal cortex and gonads (testes in males and ovaries in females). Hormones released by the adrenal cortex play a very important role: glucocorticoids control carbohydrate metabolism, modulate inflammatory reactions and are involved in reactions to stress; mineralocorticoids control the level of excretion of water and salt by the kidney. If the adrenal cortex does not function properly, one result may be Addison’s disease, characterised by hypoglycemia, weakness and increased susceptibility to stress; it is fatal unless treated by glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Hormones released by the gonads are responsible for the development of secondary sex characters. Testosterone is the major sex hormone in males (deep voice, facial hair, general physical constitution). Estradiol is the main female sex hormone; it is responsible for secondary female characteristics and participates in the control of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone prepares the uterus for implantation of the fertilised egg. Steroid hormones adrenal cortex aur gonads (males mein testes, females mein ovaries) banate hain.
