NCERT Peptide linkage (10.2.3) · Class 12 Chemistry · Chapter 10 · interactive diagram
Parts and what they mean
- Glycine supplies its –COOH (ग्लाइसीन अपना –COOH देता है) — The carboxyl group of glycine combines with the amino group of alanine.
- Alanine supplies its –NH₂ (ऐलानीन अपना –NH₂ देता है) — Alanine: R = –CH₃.
- A water molecule is eliminated (एक जल अणु निकलता है) — –OH from the –COOH of one amino acid + –H from the –NH₂ of the other = H₂O (a condensation reaction).
- Peptide bond –CO–NH– (पेप्टाइड बंध –CO–NH–) — Chemically an amide link formed between –COOH and –NH₂. Proteins are polymers of α-amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
- Glycylalanine — a dipeptide (ग्लाइसिलऐलानीन — एक डाइपेप्टाइड) — Two amino acids, one peptide bond. Three amino acids (two peptide bonds) = tripeptide; more than ten = polypeptide; more than 100 residues and mass above 10,000 u = protein.
- Free amino end (glycine) (मुक्त ऐमीनो सिरा (ग्लाइसीन)) — The name is read from this end: glycyl-alanine.
- Free carboxyl end (alanine) (मुक्त कार्बॉक्सिल सिरा (ऐलानीन)) — A third amino acid can join here → tripeptide.
