Parts and what they mean
- D-(–)-Fructose, open chain (D-(–)-फ्रक्टोस, खुली श्रृंखला) — C₆H₁₂O₆, a ketohexose: six carbons in a straight chain with the keto group at C-2. D-series and laevorotatory, so written D-(–)-fructose.
- C-2: keto group (>C=O) (C-2: कीटो समूह (>C=O)) — Glucose has –CHO at C-1; fructose has >C=O at C-2. Both are C₆H₁₂O₆ (functional isomers).
- C-3: –OH on the left (C-3: –OH बाईं ओर) — Same as C-3 of glucose.
- C-4: –OH on the right (C-4: –OH दाईं ओर) — Same as C-4 of glucose.
- C-5: –OH on the right → D (C-5: –OH दाईं ओर → D) — Lowest asymmetric carbon → D-series. Its –OH closes the five-membered ring.
- Furan (फ्यूरैन) — A five-membered cyclic compound with one oxygen and four carbons; hence the name furanose.
- Ring closure in fructose (फ्रक्टोस में वलय बनना) — The –OH at C-5 adds to the C=O at C-2 → two cyclic forms (α and β) with a five-membered ring.
