Parts and what they mean
- Polypeptide chains, stretched out (पॉलिपेप्टाइड श्रृंखलाएँ, फैली हुई) — All chains are stretched to nearly maximum extension and laid side by side. The zig-zag folds look like the pleats of drapery — hence β-pleated sheet.
- Intermolecular hydrogen bonds (अंतराअणुक हाइड्रोजन बंध) — Hold the neighbouring chains together: C=O of one chain to N–H of the next.
- Amino acid residue (ऐमीनो अम्ल अवशेष) — One unit of the chain.
