Start here — the 30-second ideaTake ammonia, NH₃, and swap its H atoms for carbon groups: you get amines. The N keeps its lone pair, so amines are bases and nucleophiles — that one idea explains almost the whole chapter. Aromatic primary amines (like aniline) also make diazonium salts, the "master key" for putting F, Cl, Br, I, CN, OH or NO₂ on a benzene ring and for making azo dyes. Yahan se shuru kijiye — 30-second ideaAmmonia, NH₃, lijiye aur iske H atoms ki jagah carbon groups lagaiye: aapko amines milte hain. N apna lone pair rakhta hai, isliye amines bases aur nucleophiles hain — yahi ek idea lagbhag poora chapter samjha deta hai. Aromatic primary amines (jaise aniline) diazonium salts bhi banate hain — benzene ring par F, Cl, Br, I, CN, OH ya NO₂ lagane aur azo dyes banane ki "master key".

Amines are an important class of organic compounds derived by replacing one or more H atoms of ammonia by alkyl/aryl groups. In nature they occur in proteins, vitamins, alkaloids and hormones; synthetic examples include polymers, dyestuffs and drugs. Adrenaline and ephedrine (both with a secondary amino group) are used to increase blood pressure; novocain is an anaesthetic used in dentistry; benadryl, an antihistamine, has a tertiary amino group; quaternary ammonium salts are surfactants; diazonium salts are intermediates for many aromatic compounds including dyes. Amines organic compounds ki ek important class hai jo ammonia ke ek ya zyada H atoms ko alkyl/aryl groups se replace karke banti hai. Amines can be considered as derivatives of ammonia, obtained by replacing one, two or all the three hydrogen atoms of NH₃ by alkyl and/or aryl groups — e.g. CH₃–NH₂, C₆H₅–NH₂, CH₃–NH–CH₃, (CH₃)₃N. Amines ko ammonia ke derivatives maana ja sakta hai — NH₃ ke ek, do ya teeno H atoms ko alkyl aur/ya aryl groups se replace karke — jaise CH₃–NH₂, C₆H₅–NH₂, CH₃–NH–CH₃, (CH₃)₃N.

Amines ki structure

Like ammonia, the nitrogen atom of amines is trivalent and carries an unshared pair of electrons. Nitrogen orbitals in amines are therefore sp³ hybridised and the geometry is pyramidal. Each of the three sp³ orbitals overlaps with an orbital of H or C; the fourth sp³ orbital holds the unshared pair. Because the lone pair repels more strongly, the angle C–N–E (E = C or H) is less than 109.5°; in trimethylamine it is 108° (NCERT Fig 9.1). Ammonia ki tarah amines ka nitrogen trivalent hai aur us par ek unshared electron pair hai. Isliye N ke orbitals sp³ hybridised hain aur shape pyramidal hai. Teen sp³ orbitals H ya C ke orbitals se overlap karte hain; chautha sp³ orbital lone pair rakhta hai. Lone pair zyada repel karta hai, isliye C–N–E angle (E = C ya H) 109.5° se kam hota hai; trimethylamine mein yeh 108° hai (NCERT Fig 9.1).

Topper note — why 108°, not 109.5°?VSEPR order of repulsion: lone pair–bond pair > bond pair–bond pair. The lone pair takes more room and squeezes the C–N–C angles a little below the tetrahedral 109.5° (ammonia: 107°). Topper note — 109.5° nahi, 108° kyon?VSEPR repulsion order: lone pair–bond pair > bond pair–bond pair. Lone pair zyada jagah leta hai aur C–N–C angles ko tetrahedral 109.5° se thoda kam kar deta hai (ammonia: 107°).

Classification

Amines are classified as primary (1°), secondary (2°) and tertiary (3°) depending on how many H atoms of ammonia are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Replace one H by R or Ar → RNH₂ / ArNH₂ (1°). Replace two H of NH₃ (or one H of R–NH₂) → R–NHR′ (2°); the second group may be the same or different. Replace the third H → tertiary amine. Amines are "simple" when all alkyl/aryl groups are the same and "mixed" when they are different (see the chart). Ammonia ke kitne H atoms alkyl ya aryl groups se replace hue hain, uske hisaab se amines primary (1°), secondary (2°) aur tertiary (3°) hote hain. Ek H ko R ya Ar se badaliye → RNH₂ / ArNH₂ (1°). NH₃ ke do H (ya R–NH₂ ka ek H) badaliye → R–NHR′ (2°); doosra group same ya alag ho sakta hai. Teesra H badaliye → tertiary amine. Sab groups same hon to amine "simple", alag hon to "mixed" (chart dekhiye).

Nomenclature (naamkaran)

Common system: an aliphatic amine is named by prefixing the alkyl group to "amine" as one word — e.g. methylamine. When two or more groups are the same, di- or tri- is put before the alkyl name — e.g. dimethylamine, trimethylamine. Common system: aliphatic amine ka naam alkyl group ko "amine" se pehle ek shabd mein jodkar — jaise methylamine. Do ya zyada groups same hon to alkyl naam se pehle di- ya tri- — jaise dimethylamine, trimethylamine.

IUPAC system: primary amines are alkanamines — replace the "e" of the alkane by "amine": CH₃NH₂ is methanamine. With more than one –NH₂, give the carbon numbers and use di-, tri-; the "e" of the hydrocarbon is then retained: H₂N–CH₂–CH₂–NH₂ is ethane-1,2-diamine. For 2° and 3° amines the locant N marks a group on nitrogen: CH₃NHCH₂CH₃ is N-methylethanamine and (CH₃CH₂)₃N is N,N-diethylethanamine (tap the name parts).IUPAC IUPAC system: primary amines alkanamines hain — alkane ke "e" ko "amine" se badaliye: CH₃NH₂ methanamine hai. Ek se zyada –NH₂ hon to carbon numbers dijiye aur di-, tri- lagaiye; tab hydrocarbon ka "e" rehta hai: H₂N–CH₂–CH₂–NH₂ ethane-1,2-diamine. 2° aur 3° amines mein locant N nitrogen par lage group ko dikhata hai: CH₃NHCH₂CH₃ N-methylethanamine aur (CH₃CH₂)₃N N,N-diethylethanamine (naam ke parts par tap kijiye).

In arylamines the –NH₂ group is directly attached to the benzene ring. C₆H₅NH₂ is the simplest: common name aniline (also an accepted IUPAC name); by IUPAC rules the "e" of arene is replaced by "amine" → benzenamine. Arylamines mein –NH₂ seedha benzene ring se juda hota hai. C₆H₅NH₂ sabse simple hai: common naam aniline (accepted IUPAC naam bhi); IUPAC mein arene ka "e" "amine" se badalta hai → benzenamine.

1. Reduction of nitro compounds1. 1. Nitro compounds ka reduction

Nitro compounds are reduced to amines by H₂ in the presence of finely divided Ni, Pd or Pt, or by metals in acidic medium. Nitroalkanes are similarly reduced to alkanamines. Reduction with iron scrap and HCl is preferred, because the FeCl₂ formed gets hydrolysed to release HCl during the reaction — so only a small amount of acid is needed to start it. Nitroalkanes bhi aise hi alkanamines bante hain. Iron scrap + HCl wala reduction preferred hai, kyonki bana FeCl₂ hydrolyse hokar HCl release karta hai — isliye thoda sa acid hi kaafi hai.

2. Ammonolysis of alkyl halides2. 2. Alkyl halides ka ammonolysis

The C–X bond of alkyl or benzyl halides is easily cleaved by a nucleophile (Unit 6). With an ethanolic solution of ammonia the halogen is replaced by –NH₂ — ammonolysis. It is carried out in a sealed tube at 373 K. The primary amine formed is itself a nucleophile, so it reacts further with R–X to give secondary and tertiary amines and finally the quaternary ammonium salt (step through it). The free amine is obtained from its ammonium salt by a strong base. Yeh sealed tube mein 373 K par hota hai. Bana primary amine khud nucleophile hai, isliye R–X se aage react karke secondary, tertiary amines aur aakhir mein quaternary ammonium salt deta hai (step by step dekhiye). Ammonium salt se strong base ke saath free amine milta hai.

9.5Physical Propertiesभौतिक गुणPhysical properties

The lower aliphatic amines are gases with a fishy odour. Primary amines with three or more carbons are liquids and still higher ones are solids. Aniline and other arylamines are usually colourless but get coloured on storage due to atmospheric oxidation. Lower aliphatic amines fishy smell wali gases hain. Teen ya zyada carbon wale primary amines liquid aur usse bade solid hote hain.

Solubility: lower aliphatic amines dissolve in water because they form hydrogen bonds with water; solubility falls as the hydrophobic alkyl part grows, and higher amines are essentially insoluble. Electronegativity of N (3.0) < O (3.5), so alcohols are more polar and form stronger H-bonds than amines — hence butan-1-ol is more soluble in water than butan-1-amine. Amines dissolve in organic solvents like alcohol, ether and benzene. Solubility: lower aliphatic amines paani mein ghulte hain kyonki ye paani se H-bonds banate hain; hydrophobic alkyl part badhne par solubility ghatti hai, bade amines lagbhag insoluble hain. Amines alcohol, ether, benzene jaise organic solvents mein ghulte hain.

Boiling points: 1° and 2° amines show intermolecular association by hydrogen bonding between N of one molecule and H of another (NCERT Fig 9.2). 9.6Chemical Reactionsरासायनिक अभिक्रियाएँChemical reactions

The electronegativity difference between N and H and the unshared pair on N make amines reactive. The number of H atoms on N decides the course of many reactions, which is why 1° (–NH₂), 2° (>NH) and 3° (>N–) amines differ. Because of the lone pair, amines also behave as nucleophiles.N N aur H ki electronegativity ka difference aur N par unshared pair amines ko reactive banate hain. N par H atoms ki ginti kai reactions ka raasta tay karti hai, isliye 1° (–NH₂), 2° (>NH) aur 3° (>N–) amines alag behave karte hain. Lone pair ke kaaran amines nucleophiles bhi hain.

1. Basic character of amines1. 1. Amines ka basic character

Amines are basic and react with acids to form salts; the salts with a base like NaOH give back the amine. Amine salts are soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents like ether — this is the basis for separating amines from non-basic organic compounds insoluble in water. Having a lone pair, amines are Lewis bases. Amines basic hain aur acids se salts banate hain; NaOH jaise base se salt wapas amine deta hai. Amine salts paani mein soluble par ether jaise organic solvents mein insoluble hain — yahi paani mein insoluble non-basic organic compounds se amines ko alag karne ka aadhaar hai. Lone pair ke kaaran amines Lewis bases hain.

Structure–basicity relationship

Basicity depends on how easily the amine forms its cation by accepting a proton: the more stable the cation relative to the amine, the more basic the amine. Basicity is par depend karti hai ki amine proton lekar kitni aasani se cation banata hai: amine ke muqable cation jitna stable, amine utna basic.

(a) Alkanamines vs ammonia. R–NH₂ + H⁺ → R–N⁺H₃. The electron-releasing alkyl group pushes electrons towards N, making the lone pair more available, and it also disperses the positive charge of the cation (+I effect). So alkylamines are stronger bases than ammonia, and basicity should rise with the number of alkyl groups. This is seen in the gas phase: 3° > 2° > 1° > NH₃.(a) (a) Alkanamines vs ammonia. R–NH₂ + H⁺ → R–N⁺H₃. Electron-releasing alkyl group electrons ko N ki taraf dhakelta hai, lone pair zyada available hota hai, aur cation ka positive charge bhi spread hota hai (+I effect). Isliye alkylamines ammonia se strong bases hain aur alkyl groups badhne par basicity badhni chahiye. Yeh gas phase mein dikhta hai: 3° > 2° > 1° > NH₃.

In water the trend is not regular (Table 9.3). The substituted ammonium cations are stabilised not only by +I but also by solvation (H-bonding) with water. The bigger the ion, the less it is solvated: 1° ion (three N–H) > 2° (two) > 3° (one) (see the H-bonds). By solvation alone the order would be 1° > 2° > 3° — opposite to the inductive order. Also, when the alkyl group is bigger than CH₃ there is steric hindrance to H-bonding; so changing –CH₃ to –C₂H₅ changes the order. The interplay of inductive effect, solvation and steric hindrance decides basicity in water:जल में प्रवृत्ति नियमित नहीं है (सारणी 9.3)। Substituted ammonium cations sirf +I se nahi, balki paani ke saath solvation (H-bonding) se bhi stable hote hain. Ion jitna bada, solvation utna kam: 1° ion (teen N–H) > 2° (do) > 3° (ek) (H-bonds dekhiye). Sirf solvation se order 1° > 2° > 3° hota — inductive order ke ulta. Saath hi, alkyl group CH₃ se bada ho to H-bonding mein steric hindrance hota hai; isliye –CH₃ se –C₂H₅ karne par order badal jaata hai. Paani mein basicity inductive effect, solvation aur steric hindrance ke milay-jule asar se tay hoti hai:

(b) Arylamines vs ammonia. The pKb of aniline is high (9.38) because –NH₂ is attached directly to the ring: the lone pair on N is in conjugation with the benzene ring and so less available for protonation. Aniline is a resonance hybrid of five structures, while the anilinium ion has only two (Kekulé) (draw them with curved arrows). More resonance structures → more stability, so aniline is more stable than its cation, and its proton acceptability is less than that of ammonia.(b) (b) Arylamines vs ammonia. 3. Acylation3. Acylation

Aliphatic and aromatic primary and secondary amines react with acid chlorides, anhydrides and esters by nucleophilic substitution — acylation: an H of –NH₂ or >N–H is replaced by an acyl group, giving amides. It is done in the presence of a base stronger than the amine, like pyridine, which removes the HCl formed and shifts the equilibrium to the right. With benzoyl chloride the reaction is called benzoylation. (With carboxylic acids, amines simply form salts at room temperature.) Aliphatic aur aromatic primary aur secondary amines acid chlorides, anhydrides aur esters se nucleophilic substitution karte hain — acylation: –NH₂ ya >N–H ka ek H acyl group se replace hokar amides bante hain. (a) With a 1° amine (e.g. ethanamine) it gives N-ethylbenzenesulphonamide; its N–H is strongly acidic because of the strongly electron-withdrawing sulphonyl group, so it is soluble in alkali. Isliye –NH₂ ortho/para directing aur powerful activating group hai.

(a) Bromination: aniline reacts with bromine water at room temperature to give a white precipitate of 2,4,6-tribromoaniline. The problem is the very high reactivity: substitution goes to all o/p positions. To get a monosubstituted product, protect –NH₂ by acetylation with acetic anhydride, carry out the substitution, then hydrolyse the substituted amide back to the amine (3 steps). In acetanilide the N lone pair also interacts with the C=O oxygen by resonance, so it is less available to the ring — the activating effect of –NHCOCH₃ is less than that of –NH₂ (resonance).(a) (a) Bromination: aniline room temperature par bromine water se react karke 2,4,6-tribromoaniline ka white precipitate deta hai. II. Diazonium SaltsII. II. Diazonium salts

Diazonium salts have the general formula R–N₂⁺X⁻, where R is an aryl group and X⁻ may be Cl⁻, Br⁻, HSO₄⁻, BF₄⁻, etc. They are named by suffixing diazonium to the name of the parent hydrocarbon, followed by the anion: C₆H₅N₂⁺Cl⁻ is benzenediazonium chloride and C₆H₅N₂⁺HSO₄⁻ is benzenediazonium hydrogensulphate. The –N₂⁺ group is called the diazonium group. Primary aliphatic amines form highly unstable alkyldiazonium salts; primary aromatic amines form arenediazonium salts that are stable for a short time in solution at low temperature (273–278 K) — their stability is explained by resonance. Diazonium salts ka general formula R–N₂⁺X⁻ hai, jahan R ek aryl group hai aur X⁻, Cl⁻, Br⁻, HSO₄⁻, BF₄⁻ wagairah ho sakta hai. 9.7Method of Preparation of Diazonium Saltsडाइऐज़ोनियम लवणों के विरचन की विधिDiazonium salts banane ki vidhi

Benzenediazonium chloride is prepared by reacting aniline with nitrous acid at 273–278 K; nitrous acid is produced in the mixture from sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid. The conversion of primary aromatic amines into diazonium salts is called diazotisation. Because it is unstable, the diazonium salt is not stored; it is used immediately after preparation (the set-up). Benzenediazonium chloride 273–278 K par aniline aur nitrous acid se banta hai; nitrous acid mixture mein sodium nitrite aur HCl se banta hai. Benzenediazonium chloride reacts with phenol, whose para position couples with the diazonium salt to give p-hydroxyazobenzene (an orange dye); with aniline it gives p-aminoazobenzene (yellow). This is the coupling reaction — an example of electrophilic substitution. The azo products have an extended conjugated system with both aromatic rings joined through –N=N–; such compounds are often coloured and used as dyes (see both dyes). Benzenediazonium chloride phenol se react karta hai, jiski para position diazonium salt se couple hokar p-hydroxyazobenzene (orange dye) deti hai; aniline ke saath p-aminoazobenzene (yellow) milta hai. 9.10Importance of Diazonium Salts in Synthesis of Aromatic Compoundsऐरोमैटिक यौगिकों के संश्लेषण में डाइऐज़ोनियम लवणों का महत्वAromatic compounds banane mein diazonium salts ka mahatva

Diazonium salts are very good intermediates for introducing –F, –Cl, –Br, –I, –CN, –OH, –NO₂ into the aromatic ring. Aryl fluorides and iodides cannot be made by direct halogenation. The cyano group cannot be introduced by nucleophilic substitution of Cl in chlorobenzene, but cyanobenzene is easily obtained from the diazonium salt. So replacing the diazo group helps make substituted aromatic compounds that cannot be prepared by direct substitution in benzene or substituted benzene.डाइऐज़ोनियम लवण ऐरोमैटिक वलय में –F, –Cl, –Br, –I, –CN, –OH, –NO₂ प्रविष्ट कराने के लिए बहुत अच्छे मध्यवर्ती हैं। Diazonium salts aromatic ring mein –F, –Cl, –Br, –I, –CN, –OH, –NO₂ lagane ke liye bahut achhe intermediates hain. Isliye diazo group ka replacement aise substituted aromatic compounds banane mein madad karta hai jo benzene ya substituted benzene mein direct substitution se nahi bante.
