Start here — the 30-second ideaSome compounds hold a metal ion wrapped in a fixed team of molecules or ions — like K₄[Fe(CN)₆] or the [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺ ion. The team members are ligands; each lends the metal a lone pair. This chapter asks four questions: (1) what do we call the parts and how do we name them? (2) in how many ways can the same team be arranged (isomers)? (3) why does the metal bond, and why are some complexes magnetic and coloured (VBT and CFT)? (4) where do we use them — from haemoglobin to gold extraction? Werner’s Theory of Coordination Compounds

Alfred Werner (1866–1919), a Swiss chemist, was the first to explain the structures of coordination compounds. He prepared a series of cobalt(III) chloride–ammonia compounds and added excess AgNO₃ in the cold. Only some of the chloride came down as AgCl; the rest stayed in solution: 1 mol CoCl₃·6NH₃ (yellow) gave 3 mol AgCl, CoCl₃·5NH₃ (purple) gave 2, and both CoCl₃·4NH₃ (green) and CoCl₃·4NH₃ (violet) gave 1.

Werner explained this (with conductivity data) by saying that six groups — NH₃ molecules, Cl⁻ ions or both — stay bonded to cobalt all the time, inside a unit that does not dissociate. Only the chloride OUTSIDE this unit is free to form AgCl (NCERT Table 5.1). Werner ne (conductivity data ke saath) samjhaya ki chhah groups — NH₃ molecules, Cl⁻ ions ya dono — hamesha cobalt se jude rehte hain, ek aisi unit mein jo dissociate nahi hoti. Sirf is unit ke bahar wala chloride AgCl bana sakta hai (NCERT Table 5.1).

Werner’s postulates: (1) In coordination compounds metals show two types of linkages (valences) — primary valence and secondary valence. (2) The primary valences are normally ionisable and are satisfied by negative ions. (3) The secondary valences are non-ionisable, satisfied by neutral molecules or negative ions; the secondary valence equals the coordination number and is fixed for a metal. (4) The ions/groups bound by secondary linkages have characteristic spatial arrangements — different coordination numbers give different coordination polyhedra. Werner ke postulates: (1) Coordination compounds mein metals do tarah ki valences dikhati hain — primary valence aur secondary valence. (2) Primary valence normally ionisable hoti hai aur negative ions se satisfy hoti hai. (3) Secondary valence non-ionisable hoti hai, neutral molecules ya negative ions se satisfy; yeh coordination number ke barabar aur metal ke liye fixed hoti hai. (4) Secondary valence wale groups ki khaas 3D arrangement hoti hai — alag coordination numbers alag coordination polyhedra dete hain.

Werner’s two valences in one linePrimary = ionisable = oxidation state = outside the bracket. Secondary = non-ionisable = coordination number = inside the bracket. In [Co(NH₃)₅Cl]Cl₂: primary 3 (Co³⁺), secondary 6. Werner ki do valences ek line meinPrimary = ionisable = oxidation state = bracket ke bahar. Secondary = non-ionisable = coordination number = bracket ke andar. [Co(NH₃)₅Cl]Cl₂ mein: primary 3 (Co³⁺), secondary 6.

Today the species inside the square bracket is called a coordination entity (complex), and the ions outside are counter ions. Werner also predicted that [Co(NH₃)₄Cl₂]⁺ should exist in two forms — the violet (cis) and the green (trans) CoCl₃·4NH₃ of the table. Rotate both octahedra in 3D: the same atoms, a different arrangement. Aaj bracket ke andar ki species ko coordination entity (complex) aur bahar ke ions ko counter ions kehte hain. Werner ne yeh bhi bataya ki [Co(NH₃)₄Cl₂]⁺ do roopon mein hona chahiye — table ke violet (cis) aur green (trans) CoCl₃·4NH₃. Dono octahedra ko 3D mein ghumaiye: same atoms, alag arrangement.

(e) Coordination sphere: the central atom and its ligands inside the square bracket; the ionisable groups outside are counter ions — in K₄[Fe(CN)₆] the sphere is [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻ and the counter ion K⁺.(घ) समन्वय संख्या (CN): धातु से सीधे जुड़े लिगन्ड दाता परमाणुओं की संख्या — [PtCl₆]²⁻ में 6 और [Ni(NH₃)₄]²⁺ में 4। (d) Coordination number (CN): metal se seedhe jude ligand donor atoms ki ginti — [PtCl₆]²⁻ mein 6 aur [Ni(NH₃)₄]²⁺ mein 4. Now see the rules at work in NCERT’s three worked names: 1. [Cr(NH₃)₃(H₂O)₃]Cl₃ → triamminetriaquachromium(III) chloride — the cation is in the bracket; *ammine* before *aqua* alphabetically; three Cl⁻ outside make the complex +3, and since all ligands are neutral, Cr is +3. 2. [Co(H₂NCH₂CH₂NH₂)₃]₂(SO₄)₃ → tris(ethane-1,2-diamine)cobalt(III) sulphate — 3 sulphates (−6) balance 2 complex cations, so each is +3; en is neutral, so Co is +3. 5.4Isomerism in Coordination Compoundsउपसहसंयोजन यौगिकों में समावयवताCoordination Compounds mein Isomerism

Isomers have the same chemical formula but a different arrangement of atoms, so they differ in one or more physical or chemical properties. Two main types: (a) stereoisomerism — same chemical formula and chemical bonds, different spatial arrangement: (i) geometrical, (ii) optical; (b) structural isomerism — different bonds: (i) linkage, (ii) coordination, (iii) ionisation, (iv) solvate. Isomers ka chemical formula same par atoms ki arrangement alag hoti hai, isliye ek ya zyada physical/chemical properties alag hoti hain. Found in heteroleptic complexes when ligands can occupy different positions around the metal. In a square planar [MX₂L₂] complex, the two X can be next to each other (cis) or opposite (trans) — e.g. [Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂] (Fig 5.2). The octahedral [MX₂L₄] type shows the same thing: cis and trans [Co(NH₃)₄Cl₂]⁺ (Fig 5.3). Heteroleptic complexes mein milti hai jab ligands metal ke chaaron taraf alag positions le sakein. Didentate ligands L–L, e.g. en, give the same choice in [MX₂(L–L)₂]: cis and trans [CoCl₂(en)₂]⁺ (Fig 5.4). Another type occurs in octahedral [Ma₃b₃], like [Co(NH₃)₃(NO₂)₃]: if the three identical donor atoms sit on the corners of one face of the octahedron it is the facial (fac) isomer; if they lie around a meridian it is the meridional (mer) isomer (Fig 5.5). Didentate ligands L–L, jaise en, [MX₂(L–L)₂] mein bhi yahi choice dete hain: cis aur trans [CoCl₂(en)₂]⁺ (Fig 5.4). NCERT Example 5.4 — no geometrical isomers in tetrahedral [MA₂B₂]Why is geometrical isomerism not possible in tetrahedral complexes having two different types of unidentate ligands? Because in a tetrahedron the relative positions of the ligands are all the same — every corner is adjacent to every other corner (all angles 109.5°), so there is no “opposite” position and no cis/trans pair.NCERT NCERT Example 5.4 — tetrahedral [MA₂B₂] mein geometrical isomers nahiDo tarah ke unidentate ligands wale tetrahedral complexes mein geometrical isomerism kyon possible nahi? 5.4.2Optical Isomerismध्रुवण समावयवताOptical Isomerism

Optical isomers are mirror images that cannot be superimposed on one another — enantiomers. A molecule or ion that cannot be superimposed on its mirror image is chiral. The two forms are dextro (d) and laevo (l), depending on the direction they rotate plane-polarised light in a polarimeter (d to the right, l to the left). Optical isomerism is common in octahedral complexes with didentate ligands: [Co(en)₃]³⁺ (Fig 5.6), and in [PtCl₂(en)₂]²⁺ only the cis isomer is optically active (Fig 5.7). Dono forms dextro (d) aur laevo (l) hain — polarimeter mein plane-polarised light ko right (d) ya left (l) ghumane ke hisaab se. Yeh didentate ligand wale octahedral complexes mein common hai: [Co(en)₃]³⁺ (Fig 5.6), aur [PtCl₂(en)₂]²⁺ mein sirf cis isomer optically active hai (Fig 5.7).

Arises in a complex containing an ambidentate ligand. Thiocyanate NCS⁻ may bind through N (M–NCS) or through S (M–SCN). 5.4.6Solvate Isomerismविलायकयोजन समावयवताSolvate Isomerism

Called hydrate isomerism when the solvent is water. Similar to ionisation isomerism: the isomers differ in whether a solvent molecule is directly bonded to the metal or is just free solvent in the crystal lattice. Example: [Cr(H₂O)₆]Cl₃ (violet) and its solvate isomer [Cr(H₂O)₅Cl]Cl₂·H₂O (grey-green). Solvent paani ho to ise hydrate isomerism kehte hain. Coordination Compounds mein Bonding

Werner described the bonding first, but his theory could not answer: (i) why only certain elements form coordination compounds, (ii) why the bonds have directional properties, (iii) why complexes have characteristic magnetic and optical properties. Two theories answer these: Valence Bond Theory (VBT) and Crystal Field Theory (CFT). Werner ne sabse pehle bonding describe ki, par unki theory nahi bata saki: (i) sirf kuch elements hi coordination compounds kyon banate hain, (ii) bonds directional kyon hote hain, (iii) complexes ke khaas magnetic aur optical properties kyon hote hain. In VBT the metal atom or ion, under the influence of ligands, uses its (n−1)d, ns, np or ns, np, nd orbitals for hybridisation, giving equivalent orbitals of definite geometry. These hybrid orbitals overlap with ligand orbitals that donate electron pairs. The geometry follows from the hybridisation (NCERT Table 5.2):VBT ज्यामिति संकरण से तय होती है (NCERT सारणी 5.2):VBT mein metal atom/ion, ligands ke asar mein, apne (n−1)d, ns, np ya ns, np, nd orbitals ka hybridisation karta hai aur fixed geometry ke equivalent orbitals banata hai. In the diamagnetic octahedral [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺, Co³⁺ is 3d⁶. The NH₃ ligands make the six d electrons pair up in three 3d orbitals, leaving two 3d empty: d²sp³ — six pairs from six NH₃ fill the hybrids. Octahedral, no unpaired electron, and because the inner 3d is used it is an inner orbital (low spin, spin paired) complex. The paramagnetic [CoF₆]³⁻ keeps four unpaired electrons and uses outer 4d orbitals: sp³d², an outer orbital (high spin, spin free) complex. Diamagnetic octahedral [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺ mein Co³⁺ 3d⁶ hai. Coordination Compounds ki Magnetic Properties

The magnetic moment tells us how many unpaired electrons a complex has, and so how it is bonded. For the first transition series, d¹, d² and d³ ions always leave two vacant 3d orbitals for d²sp³ — e.g. [Cr(H₂O)₆]³⁺ (d³) is inner orbital with three unpaired electrons. For d⁴, d⁵, d⁶ two vacant 3d orbitals appear only if electrons pair up: [Mn(CN)₆]³⁻ has 2 unpaired, [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻ 1 unpaired and [Co(C₂O₄)₃]³⁻ is diamagnetic — all d²sp³, inner orbital. But [MnCl₆]³⁻ (4 unpaired), [FeF₆]³⁻ (5) and [CoF₆]³⁻ (4) keep their electrons unpaired and use outer 4d orbitals — sp³d², outer orbital. Magnetic moment batata hai ki complex mein kitne unpaired electrons hain, aur isliye bonding kaisi hai. First transition series mein d¹, d² aur d³ ions d²sp³ ke liye hamesha do khaali 3d orbitals chhodte hain — jaise [Cr(H₂O)₆]³⁺ (d³) teen unpaired electrons wala inner orbital complex. d⁴, d⁵, d⁶ mein do khaali 3d orbitals sirf pairing se bante hain: [Mn(CN)₆]³⁻ mein 2 unpaired, [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻ mein 1 aur [Co(C₂O₄)₃]³⁻ diamagnetic — sab d²sp³, inner orbital. Par [MnCl₆]³⁻ (4 unpaired), [FeF₆]³⁻ (5) aur [CoF₆]³⁻ (4) mein electrons unpaired rehte hain aur outer 4d orbitals lagte hain — sp³d², outer orbital.

CFT is an electrostatic model: ligands are treated as point charges (anions) or point dipoles (neutral molecules), and the metal–ligand bond is taken as ionic. In a free metal ion the five d orbitals are degenerate. A spherically symmetrical field of negative charges would raise all five equally, but real ligands come from particular directions, so the d orbitals split — crystal field splitting. Tap the five d orbitals below and see which point at the ligands.CFT CFT ek electrostatic model hai: ligands ko point charges (anions) ya point dipoles (neutral molecules) maana jaata hai, aur metal–ligand bond ionic maana jaata hai. Δo depends on the ligand. Ligands that cause a large splitting are strong field ligands; small splitting, weak field. Filling the levels. For d¹, d², d³ the electrons go singly into t2g (Hund’s rule). For d⁴ there are two choices: (i) enter eg — gives t2g³eg¹ — or (ii) pair in t2g, paying the pairing energy P — gives t2g⁴eg⁰. Which happens depends on Δo vs P: (i) if Δo < P (weak field), the 4th electron enters eg → high spin complex; (ii) if Δo > P (strong field), it pairs in t2g → low spin complex. Ions with d⁴ to d⁷ show this choice; for d¹–d³ and d⁸–d¹⁰ the field makes no difference to the number of unpaired electrons. Levels ki bharai. d¹, d², d³ mein electrons t2g mein akele-akele jaate hain (Hund’s rule). d⁴ mein do options: (i) eg mein jaaye — t2g³eg¹ — ya (ii) pairing energy P dekar t2g mein pair ho — t2g⁴eg⁰. (b) Tetrahedral field. Now the four ligands approach between the axes, so the splitting is inverted: the t₂ orbitals (dxy, dyz, dxz) go up and the e orbitals (dx²−y², dz²) go down. The splitting is smaller: Δt = (4/9) Δo. Δt is usually less than P, so the orbital splitting energies are not large enough to force pairing — low spin tetrahedral complexes are rarely observed. The subscript g is dropped because a tetrahedron has no centre of symmetry.(ख) चतुष्फलकीय क्षेत्र। (b) Tetrahedral field. Most transition-metal complexes are coloured. When a complex absorbs light of some wavelength from the visible region, we see the complementary colour of what remains (NCERT Table 5.3). CFT explains this as a d–d transition: an electron jumps from the lower set to the higher one, absorbing energy equal to the splitting. In [Ti(H₂O)₆]³⁺ (Ti³⁺, 3d¹, ground state t2g¹eg⁰) the electron is excited to t2g⁰eg¹ by blue-green light of 498 nm, so the complex looks violet. Zyadatar transition metal complexes rangeen hote hain. Jab complex visible region ki kisi wavelength ka light absorb karta hai, to humein bache light ka complementary rang dikhta hai (NCERT Table 5.3). CFT ise d–d transition se samjhata hai: electron neeche wale set se upar wale mein jaata hai aur splitting ke barabar energy absorb karta hai. [Ti(H₂O)₆]³⁺ (Ti³⁺, 3d¹, ground state t2g¹eg⁰) mein electron 498 nm ke blue-green light se t2g⁰eg¹ mein excite hota hai, isliye complex violet dikhta hai.

No ligand, no splitting, no colour. (1) If ligands were really point charges, anionic ligands should exert the greatest splitting — yet anionic ligands sit at the low end of the spectrochemical series. (2) CFT treats the metal–ligand bond as purely ionic and does not take account of the covalent character of bonding. These weaknesses are addressed by ligand field theory and molecular orbital theory, beyond this course.(1) (1) Agar ligands sach mein point charges hote, to anionic ligands ko sabse zyada splitting karni chahiye — par anionic ligands spectrochemical series ke neeche wale sire par hain. The metal–carbon bond has both σ and π character. The M–C σ bond forms when the lone pair on the carbonyl carbon is donated into a vacant metal orbital. The M–C π bond forms when a pair of electrons from a filled metal d orbital is donated into the vacant antibonding π* orbital of CO. This metal-to-ligand bonding creates a synergic effect that strengthens the bond between CO and the metal (Fig 5.14). Metal–carbon bond mein σ aur π dono character hain.
