4.1Position in the Periodic Tableआवर्त सारणी में स्थितिPeriodic table mein position
The d-block occupies the large middle section of the periodic table, flanked between the s- and p-blocks (groups 3–12). Here the d orbitals of the penultimate (second-last) shell receive electrons, giving four rows of transition metals: 3d (Sc to Zn), 4d (Y to Cd), 5d (La and Hf to Hg) and 6d (Ac and Rf to Cn).d-ब्लॉक आवर्त सारणी के बड़े मध्य भाग में है, s- और p-ब्लॉक के बीच (वर्ग 3–12)। d-block periodic table ke bade beech wale hisse mein hai, s- aur p-block ke beech (groups 3–12). Yahan penultimate (aakhri se pehle wale) shell ke d orbitals mein electrons jaate hain, isliye transition metals ki chaar rows banti hain: 3d (Sc se Zn), 4d (Y se Cd), 5d (La aur Hf se Hg) aur 6d (Ac aur Rf se Cn).The d-block is the middle part of the table, between the s- and p-blocks. Inner d orbitals fill here. There are four rows: 3d, 4d, 5d and 6d.
The f-block is placed as a separate panel at the bottom of the table. Here the 4f and 5f orbitals fill: the 4f series (Ce to Lu) = lanthanoids and the 5f series (Th to Lr) = actinoids. d-block elements are called transition metals and f-block elements inner transition elements.f-ब्लॉक सारणी के नीचे अलग पट्टी में रखा गया है। f-block table ke neeche alag panel mein rakha gaya hai. Yahan 4f aur 5f orbitals bharte hain: 4f series (Ce se Lu) = lanthanoids aur 5f series (Th se Lr) = actinoids. d-block elements transition metals aur f-block elements inner transition elements kehlaate hain. The f-block is the separate strip at the bottom. Lanthanoids fill 4f; actinoids fill 5f. They are called inner transition elements.
Position of the d- and f-block elements in the periodic tableआवर्त सारणी में d- और f-ब्लॉक तत्वों की स्थितिPosition of the d- and f-block elements in the periodic table10 tappable partsOpenThe name “transition” first meant that their properties were transitional between the s- and p-block elements. Today IUPAC defines a transition element as a metal that has an incomplete d subshell either in the neutral atom or in its ions. Zinc, cadmium and mercury (group 12) have a full d¹⁰ configuration in the ground state and in their common oxidation states, so they are not regarded as transition metals — but being the end members of the 3d, 4d and 5d series, their chemistry is studied along with them.“संक्रमण” नाम पहले इसलिए पड़ा क्योंकि इनके गुण s- और p-ब्लॉक तत्वों के बीच के (संक्रमणकालीन) थे। “Transition” naam pehle isliye pada kyunki inki properties s- aur p-block ke beech ki (transitional) thi. Aaj IUPAC ke hisaab se transition element woh metal hai jiske neutral atom ya uske ions mein d subshell incomplete ho. Zinc, cadmium aur mercury (group 12) mein ground state aur common oxidation states dono mein full d¹⁰ hota hai, isliye inhe transition metal nahi maana jaata — par 3d, 4d, 5d series ke last members hone ki wajah se inhe saath mein padha jaata hai.IUPAC: a transition metal has an incomplete d subshell in the atom or in its ions. Zn, Cd and Hg are d¹⁰ in the atom and in their ions, so they are not transition metals.
Many precious metals (silver, gold, platinum) and industrially important metals (iron, copper, titanium) belong to the transition series. Iron, copper, silver and gold shaped human civilisation, and the inner transition elements Th, Pa and U are excellent sources of nuclear energy. Kai precious metals (silver, gold, platinum) aur industry ke important metals (iron, copper, titanium) transition series mein aate hain. Iron, copper, silver aur gold ne civilisation banayi, aur inner transition elements Th, Pa aur U nuclear energy ke excellent source hain.Gold, silver, platinum, iron, copper and titanium are transition metals. Th, Pa and U give nuclear energy.
4.2Electronic Configurations of the d-Block Elementsd-ब्लॉक तत्वों के इलेक्ट्रॉनिक विन्यासd-Block ke electronic configurations
In general the outer configuration is (n–1)d¹⁻¹⁰ ns¹⁻², except Pd: 4d¹⁰ 5s⁰. (n–1)d are the inner d orbitals (1 to 10 electrons) and ns is the outermost s orbital (1 or 2 electrons). Generally outer configuration (n–1)d¹⁻¹⁰ ns¹⁻² hota hai, sirf Pd: 4d¹⁰ 5s⁰ exception hai. (n–1)d andar wale d orbitals hain (1 se 10 electrons) aur ns sabse bahar wala s orbital (1 ya 2 electrons).General formula: (n–1)d¹⁻¹⁰ ns¹⁻². Palladium is special: 4d¹⁰ 5s⁰.
There are several exceptions because the energy gap between (n–1)d and ns is very small, and half-filled and completely filled sets of orbitals are extra stable. In the 3d series this shows in Cr: 3d⁵ 4s¹ (not 3d⁴ 4s²) and Cu: 3d¹⁰ 4s¹ (not 3d⁹ 4s²). One 4s electron moves into 3d to make a half-filled (d⁵) or full (d¹⁰) set. Kai exceptions hain kyunki (n–1)d aur ns ke beech energy gap bahut kam hai, aur half-filled aur fully-filled orbitals extra stable hote hain. 3d series mein ye Cr: 3d⁵ 4s¹ (3d⁴ 4s² nahi) aur Cu: 3d¹⁰ 4s¹ (3d⁹ 4s² nahi) mein dikhta hai. Ek 4s electron 3d mein jaakar half-filled (d⁵) ya full (d¹⁰) set bana deta hai.d and s energies are close, and half-full or full d sets are stable. So Cr is 3d⁵4s¹ and Cu is 3d¹⁰4s¹.

(Tc ka configuration 4d⁵5s² hai; NCERT table mein 4d⁶5s¹ chhapa hai.)The table lists outer electrons of all four series. Several heavier metals also have only one s electron; Pd has none.
Zn, Cd, Hg and Cn have the general configuration (n–1)d¹⁰ ns² — completely filled in the ground state as well as in their common oxidation states, so they are not transition elements. The d orbitals protrude to the periphery of the atom more than s and p orbitals, so they are more influenced by surroundings and affect neighbouring atoms. Ions with the same dⁿ configuration (n = 1–9) have similar magnetic and electronic properties. Partly filled d orbitals give the typical properties: variable oxidation states, coloured ions, complex formation, catalytic activity and paramagnetism. Similarities along a horizontal row are greater in the d-block than among non-transition elements, though some group similarities also exist. Zn, Cd, Hg aur Cn ka general configuration (n–1)d¹⁰ ns² hai — ground state aur common oxidation states dono mein poore bhare, isliye ye transition elements nahi. d orbitals s aur p se zyada atom ki periphery tak phaile hote hain, isliye surroundings se zyada affect hote hain aur paas ke atoms ko affect karte hain. Same dⁿ configuration (n = 1–9) wale ions ke magnetic aur electronic properties milte-julte hain. Adhoore bhare d orbitals se typical properties aati hain: variable oxidation states, coloured ions, complexes, catalytic activity aur paramagnetism. d-block mein horizontal row mein similarity zyada hoti hai, kuch group similarities bhi hain.Zn, Cd, Hg, Cn are (n–1)d¹⁰ns², full everywhere. 4.3.1Physical Propertiesभौतिक गुणPhysical properties
Nearly all transition elements show typical metallic properties: high tensile strength, ductility, malleability, high thermal and electrical conductivity and metallic lustre. Except Zn, Cd, Hg and Mn, they have one or more typical metallic structures (bcc, hcp or ccp) at normal temperatures. Except Zn, Cd and Hg, they are very hard, have low volatility and high melting and boiling points. Lagbhag saare transition elements typical metallic properties dikhate hain: high tensile strength, ductility, malleability, high thermal aur electrical conductivity aur metallic lustre. Zn, Cd, Hg aur Mn ko chhodkar normal temperature par inki ek ya zyada typical metallic structures (bcc, hcp ya ccp) hoti hain. Zn, Cd aur Hg ko chhodkar ye bahut hard, kam volatile aur high melting/boiling point wale hote hain. They are typical metals: strong, ductile, shiny, good conductors. Most are hard with high melting points (not Zn, Cd, Hg).
Why such high melting points? Besides the ns electrons, a greater number of (n–1)d electrons take part in metallic bonding. In any row the melting point rises to a maximum at about d⁵ (except the anomalous values of Mn and Tc) and then falls regularly as atomic number increases (Fig 4.1). Itne high melting points kyun? ns electrons ke saath (n–1)d ke zyada electrons bhi metallic bonding mein hissa lete hain. Har row mein melting point lagbhag d⁵ par maximum hota hai (Mn aur Tc ke anomalous values chhodkar) aur phir atomic number badhne par regularly girta hai (Fig 4.1).Many d electrons join the metallic bond, so melting points are high. They peak near d⁵ (Mn and Tc are oddly low) and then fall.
Trends in melting points of transition elementsसंक्रमण तत्वों के गलनांक में प्रवृत्तिTrends in melting points of transition elements7 tappable partsOpenThey have high enthalpies of atomisation (Fig 4.2). The maxima near the middle of each series show that one unpaired electron per d orbital is particularly favourable for strong interatomic interaction; in general, the more valence electrons, the stronger the bonding. Metals with very high enthalpy of atomisation (very high boiling point) tend to be noble in their reactions. The second and third series have higher enthalpies of atomisation than the first — this is why metal–metal bonding is much more frequent in compounds of the heavy transition metals. Inki enthalpy of atomisation high hoti hai (Fig 4.2). Har series ke beech mein maximum dikhata hai ki har d orbital mein ek unpaired electron strong interatomic interaction ke liye khaas favourable hai; generally jitne zyada valence electrons, utni strong bonding. Bahut high atomisation enthalpy (bahut high boiling point) wale metals reactions mein noble hote hain. Doosri aur teesri series ki atomisation enthalpy pehli se zyada hai — isiliye heavy transition metals ke compounds mein metal–metal bonding zyada milti hai.Atomisation enthalpy is high and peaks mid-series. More unpaired d electrons, stronger bonds. Heavier series have even higher values.

Ions of the same charge in a series show a progressive decrease in radius with increasing atomic number. Each time the nuclear charge increases by one, the new electron enters a d orbital, and a d electron shields poorly. So the net attraction on the outer electrons increases and the radius decreases. Atomic radii show the same trend, but the variation within a series is quite small. Ek series mein same charge wale ions ka radius atomic number badhne par dheere-dheere ghatta hai. Har baar nuclear charge ek badhne par naya electron d orbital mein jaata hai, aur d electron kamzor shielding karta hai. Isliye outer electrons par net attraction badhta hai aur radius ghatta hai. Atomic radii mein bhi yahi trend hai, par series ke andar change kaafi chhota hota hai.Across a series, radius slowly decreases: nuclear charge rises and d electrons shield poorly. The change is small.
Compare the series (Fig 4.3): radii increase from 3d to 4d, but 5d radii are virtually the same as 4d. Reason: the 4f orbitals are filled before the 5d series begins, and the poorly shielding 4f electrons cause a regular shrinkage called lanthanoid contraction, which cancels the expected size increase. Result: Zr 160 pm ≈ Hf 159 pm, and the 4d and 5d members of a group have very similar physical and chemical properties — much more than usual family resemblance. Series compare kijiye (Fig 4.3): radii 3d se 4d mein badhti hain, par 5d ki radii lagbhag 4d jitni hain. Wajah: 5d series se pehle 4f orbitals bharte hain, aur kamzor shielding wale 4f electrons regular shrinkage laate hain jise lanthanoid contraction kehte hain; ye expected size increase ko cancel kar deta hai. Result: Zr 160 pm ≈ Hf 159 pm, aur group ke 4d aur 5d members ki physical aur chemical properties bahut similar hoti hain.4d atoms are bigger than 3d, but 5d atoms are about the same size as 4d because of lanthanoid contraction. Zr (160 pm) and Hf (159 pm) are almost twins.
Trends in atomic radii of transition elementsसंक्रमण तत्वों की परमाणु त्रिज्या में प्रवृत्तिTrends in atomic radii of transition elements6 tappable partsOpenThe cause of lanthanoid contraction is like that in an ordinary transition series — imperfect shielding of one electron by another in the same set of orbitals — but the shielding of one 4f electron by another is even less than that of one d electron by another. So as nuclear charge increases there is a fairly regular decrease in the size of the entire 4fⁿ orbitals. Also, decreasing metallic radius + increasing atomic mass → increasing density: from Ti (4.1) to Cu (8.9 g cm⁻³) density rises markedly (Table 4.2). Lanthanoid contraction ka kaaran normal transition series jaisa hi hai — same set ke orbitals mein ek electron dusre ko theek se shield nahi karta — par 4f electron ki shielding d electron se bhi kam hoti hai. Isliye nuclear charge badhne par poore 4fⁿ orbitals ka size kaafi regularly ghatta hai. Saath hi metallic radius ghate + atomic mass badhe → density badhti hai: Ti (4.1) se Cu (8.9 g cm⁻³) tak density saaf badhti hai (Table 4.2).4f electrons shield even worse than d electrons, so size shrinks steadily. Smaller atoms with more mass make density rise from Ti to Cu.
4.3.3Ionisation Enthalpiesआयनन एन्थैल्पीIonisation enthalpies
Ionisation enthalpy increases from left to right in each series because nuclear charge increases as the inner d orbitals fill. But compared with non-transition elements, (1) successive ionisation enthalpies do not rise as steeply, and (2) the variation along a series is much smaller than along a period of non-transition elements. The first ionisation enthalpy generally increases, while the increase in the second and third ionisation enthalpies for successive elements is much larger. Har series mein ionisation enthalpy left se right badhti hai, kyunki inner d orbitals bharne ke saath nuclear charge badhta hai. Par non-transition elements ke comparison mein (1) successive ionisation enthalpies utni tezi se nahi badhti, aur (2) series mein variation period ke comparison mein bahut kam hota hai. First IE generally badhti hai, jabki second aur third IE mein badhat kahin zyada hoti hai.IE rises across a series, but slowly. The 2nd and 3rd IE change more.
First, second and third ionisation enthalpies of the 3d series (NCERT Table 4.2)3d श्रेणी की प्रथम, द्वितीय और तृतीय आयनन एन्थैल्पी (NCERT सारणी 4.2)First, second and third ionisation enthalpies of the 3d series (NCERT Table 4.2)7 tappable partsOpenWhy only a slight rise in the first IE? On forming ions, ns electrons are lost before (n–1)d electrons. Along the 3d series the extra electrons enter the inner 3d orbitals, which shield the 4s electrons from the rising nuclear charge somewhat more effectively than outer-shell electrons shield one another. So atomic radii decrease slowly and the first IE rises only slightly. (The irregular first-IE trend is of little chemical significance; removing one electron changes the relative energies of 4s and 3d.) First IE mein thodi hi badhat kyun? Ion bante waqt (n–1)d se pehle ns electrons nikalte hain. 3d series mein extra electrons andar ke 3d orbitals mein jaate hain, jo 4s electrons ko badhte nuclear charge se, outer shell electrons ke comparison mein, thoda behtar shield karte hain. Isliye atomic radius dheere ghatta hai aur first IE thoda hi badhta hai. (First IE ki irregularity ka chemical importance kam hai; ek electron hatane se 4s aur 3d ki relative energies badal jaati hain.)4s electrons leave first. Added 3d electrons shield the 4s electrons a little, so the first IE rises only slightly.
Breaks in the trend: a steady increase in the second IE breaks at Mn²⁺ and in the third IE breaks at Fe³⁺ — in both cases the ion formed (or broken) is d⁵. Three factors decide ionisation enthalpy: attraction of each electron to the nucleus, repulsion between electrons, and exchange energy. Exchange energy (≈ proportional to the number of pairs of parallel spins in degenerate orbitals) stabilises a configuration; by Hund's rule the lowest-energy state has maximum single occupation with parallel spins. A half-filled d⁵ set has maximum exchange energy, so removing an electron from d⁵ is hard, while removing one electron from d⁶ (which then becomes d⁵) is easy. Hence (NCERT): Mn⁺ (3d⁵4s¹) has a lower IE than Cr⁺ (d⁵), and Fe²⁺ (d⁶) has a lower IE than Mn²⁺ (d⁵) — i.e. the third IE of Fe is lower than that of Mn. Trend mein break: second IE ka steady increase Mn²⁺ par aur third IE ka Fe³⁺ par tootta hai — dono mein ion d⁵ hai. Ionisation enthalpy teen cheezon par depend karti hai: har electron ka nucleus ki taraf attraction, electrons ke beech repulsion, aur exchange energy. Exchange energy (degenerate orbitals mein parallel spin pairs ki sankhya ke lagbhag proportional) configuration ko stable banati hai; Hund's rule se lowest energy state mein maximum single occupation aur parallel spins hote hain. Half-filled d⁵ mein exchange energy maximum hoti hai, isliye d⁵ se electron nikalna mushkil hai, jabki d⁶ se ek electron nikalna (jo phir d⁵ ban jaata hai) aasaan hai. Isliye (NCERT): Mn⁺ (3d⁵4s¹) ka IE Cr⁺ (d⁵) se kam, aur Fe²⁺ (d⁶) ka IE Mn²⁺ (d⁵) se kam — yaani Fe ka third IE, Mn se kam hai.d⁵ is extra stable (maximum exchange energy). Removing an electron from d⁵ is hard; from d⁶ it is easy. So Mn²⁺ → Mn³⁺ is hard, Fe²⁺ → Fe³⁺ is easier.
The +2 state. The lowest common oxidation state is +2; forming M²⁺ from gaseous atoms needs IE₁ + IE₂ plus the enthalpy of atomisation. The dominant term, IE₂, is unusually high for Cr and Cu, because their M⁺ ions are d⁵ and d¹⁰. Zn's IE₂ is correspondingly low — it removes a 4s electron and leaves a stable d¹⁰ ion. The third IE (no 4s complication) shows how hard it is to remove an electron from d⁵ (Mn²⁺) and d¹⁰ (Zn²⁺). The high third IEs of Cu, Ni and Zn explain why oxidation states above +2 are difficult for these elements. Ionisation enthalpies give some guidance about the stability of oxidation states, but the problem is complex and not easy to generalise.+2 अवस्था। +2 state. Sabse lowest common oxidation state +2 hai; gaseous atoms se M²⁺ banane ke liye atomisation enthalpy ke saath IE₁ + IE₂ lagta hai. Main term IE₂ Cr aur Cu ke liye unusually high hai, kyunki inke M⁺ ions d⁵ aur d¹⁰ hain. Zn ka IE₂ kam hai — 4s electron nikalta hai aur stable d¹⁰ ion bachta hai. IE stability ka kuch idea deti hai, par ye problem complex hai.IE₂ is high for Cr and Cu (their M⁺ is d⁵/d¹⁰) and low for Zn. High IE₃ of Cu, Ni, Zn makes states above +2 hard.
4.3.4Oxidation Statesऑक्सीकरण अवस्थाएँOxidation states
A notable feature of transition elements is the great variety of oxidation states in their compounds (NCERT Table 4.3). The greatest number occurs in or near the middle of the series — manganese shows every state from +2 to +7. Fewer states at the ends come from too few electrons to lose or share (Sc, Ti) or too many d electrons, hence fewer orbitals available for sharing (Cu, Zn). So Sc(II) is virtually unknown, Ti(IV) is more stable than Ti(III) or Ti(II), and zinc shows only +2 (no d electrons involved). Transition elements ki ek khaas baat unke compounds mein oxidation states ki badi variety hai (NCERT Table 4.3). Sabse zyada states series ke beech mein ya uske paas milti hain — manganese +2 se +7 tak har state dikhata hai. Kinaaron par kam states ki wajah: khone/share karne ko bahut kam electrons (Sc, Ti) ya bahut zyada d electrons, isliye share karne ko kam orbitals (Cu, Zn). Isliye Sc(II) lagbhag unknown hai, Ti(IV) Ti(III)/Ti(II) se zyada stable hai, aur zinc sirf +2 dikhata hai.Middle elements show the most oxidation states; Mn shows +2 to +7. Ends show few: Sc and Ti have few electrons, Cu and Zn have too many d electrons.

Oxidation states of the first-row transition metalsप्रथम श्रेणी संक्रमण धातुओं की ऑक्सीकरण अवस्थाएँOxidation states of the first-row transition metals4 tappable partsOpenUp to manganese, the maximum oxidation state of reasonable stability = sum of s and d electrons: TiIVO₂, VVO₂⁺, CrVIO₄²⁻, MnVIIO₄⁻. After that the stability of high states drops abruptly, so the typical species are FeII,III, CoII,III, NiII, CuI,II, ZnII. Manganese tak reasonably stable maximum oxidation state = s aur d electrons ka sum: TiIVO₂, VVO₂⁺, CrVIO₄²⁻, MnVIIO₄⁻. Uske baad high states ki stability achanak girti hai, isliye typical species hain FeII,III, CoII,III, NiII, CuI,II, ZnII.Up to Mn, the highest state = number of 4s + 3d electrons (Ti +4, V +5, Cr +6, Mn +7). After Mn, high states are unstable.
In transition elements, oxidation states differ by unity (e.g. VII, VIII, VIV, VV) because d orbitals fill incompletely; in non-transition elements they normally differ by two (e.g. Sn²⁺/Sn⁴⁺, Pb²⁺/Pb⁴⁺). Down a d-block group (groups 4–10) the trend is opposite to the p-block (inert pair effect): heavier members favour HIGHER states. In group 6, Mo(VI) and W(VI) are more stable than Cr(VI) — so dichromate (CrVI) in acid is a strong oxidising agent, but MoO₃ and WO₃ are not. Low oxidation states appear with ligands that are π-acceptors besides σ-donors: in Ni(CO)₄ and Fe(CO)₅ the metal is in the zero oxidation state. Transition elements mein oxidation states ek-ek ke difference se hoti hain (jaise VII, VIII, VIV, VV), kyunki d orbitals incomplete bharte hain; non-transition elements mein normally do ka difference hota hai (jaise Sn²⁺/Sn⁴⁺, Pb²⁺/Pb⁴⁺). d-block groups (4–10) mein trend p-block (inert pair effect) ka ulta hai: heavy members HIGHER states pasand karte hain. Group 6 mein Mo(VI) aur W(VI), Cr(VI) se zyada stable hain — isliye acid mein dichromate (CrVI) strong oxidising agent hai, par MoO₃ aur WO₃ nahi. E°(M²⁺/M) tells how easily a metal goes from M(s) to M²⁺(aq). The high energy needed to convert Cu(s) to Cu²⁺(aq) (high atomisation enthalpy + high IE₂) is not balanced by its hydration enthalpy. So Cu cannot liberate H₂ from acids; only oxidising acids (nitric and hot concentrated sulphuric acid) react with it, the acid itself being reduced. The E° values of Mn, Ni and Zn are more negative than expected from the trend: for Mn²⁺ (half-filled d⁵) and Zn²⁺ (full d¹⁰) this is due to the stability of these configurations, while for Ni it is due to its highest negative hydration enthalpy. Copper unique hai — iska E° positive (+0.34 V) hai. E°(M³⁺/M²⁺) values (Table 4.2) show varying trends. The low value for Sc reflects the stability of Sc³⁺ (noble gas configuration). The highest value for Zn would be due to removing an electron from the stable d¹⁰ of Zn²⁺. The comparatively high value for Mn (+1.57 V) shows that Mn²⁺ (d⁵) is particularly stable, whereas the comparatively low value for Fe (+0.77 V) shows the extra stability of Fe³⁺ (d⁵). The comparatively low value for V is related to the stability of V²⁺ (half-filled t₂g level).E°(M³⁺/M²⁺) E°(M³⁺/M²⁺) values (Table 4.2) alag-alag trends dikhate hain. Halides (Table 4.5). The highest oxidation numbers are reached in TiX₄ (tetrahalides), VF₅ and CrF₆. The +7 state of Mn is not found in simple halides, but MnO₃F is known. Beyond Mn no metal has a trihalide except FeX₃ and CoF₃. Fluorine stabilises the highest states either by higher lattice energy (as in CoF₃) or by higher bond enthalpy terms of the higher covalent compounds (VF₅, CrF₆). V(+5) is represented only by VF₅; the other halides hydrolyse to oxohalides VOX₃. Fluorides are unstable in low oxidation states, e.g. VX₂ (X = Cl, Br or I), and the same applies to CuX. Halides (Table 4.5). Sabse high oxidation numbers TiX₄ (tetrahalides), VF₅ aur CrF₆ mein milte hain. Mn ki +7 state simple halides mein nahi milti, par MnO₃F known hai. Mn ke baad FeX₃ aur CoF₃ ko chhodkar kisi metal ka trihalide nahi hai. Fluorine highest states ko high lattice energy (jaise CoF₃) ya higher covalent compounds ke high bond enthalpy (VF₅, CrF₆) se stable karta hai. V(+5) sirf VF₅ mein hai; baaki halides hydrolyse hokar oxohalides VOX₃ dete hain. Low oxidation states mein fluorides unstable hain, jaise VX₂ (X = Cl, Br ya I), aur yahi CuX par bhi lagu hai.Highest halides: TiX₄, VF₅, CrF₆. Mn(VII) only as MnO₃F. Fluorine stabilises high states by lattice energy or strong bonds.

All Cu(II) halides are known except the iodide, because Cu²⁺ oxidises I⁻ to I₂: 2Cu²⁺ + 4I⁻ → Cu₂I₂(s) + I₂. Many copper(I) compounds are unstable in water and disproportionate: 2Cu⁺ → Cu²⁺ + Cu. Cu²⁺(aq) is more stable than Cu⁺(aq) because the much more negative hydration enthalpy of Cu²⁺ more than compensates for the second ionisation enthalpy of Cu.आयोडाइड को छोड़कर सभी Cu(II) हैलाइड ज्ञात हैं, क्योंकि Cu²⁺, I⁻ को I₂ में ऑक्सीकृत कर देता है: 2Cu²⁺ + 4I⁻ → Cu₂I₂(s) + I₂। Iodide ko chhodkar saare Cu(II) halides known hain, kyunki Cu²⁺, I⁻ ko I₂ mein oxidise kar deta hai: 2Cu²⁺ + 4I⁻ → Cu₂I₂(s) + I₂. Kai copper(I) compounds paani mein unstable hain aur disproportionation hote hain: 2Cu⁺ → Cu²⁺ + Cu. Cu²⁺(aq), Cu⁺(aq) se zyada stable hai kyunki Cu²⁺ ki bahut zyada negative hydration enthalpy Cu ki second IE ko compensate karke bhi zyada hai.CuI₂ does not exist: Cu²⁺ oxidises iodide. Cu⁺ in water splits into Cu²⁺ and Cu. Cu²⁺ wins because its hydration releases a lot of energy.
Oxides (Table 4.6). Oxygen's ability to stabilise the highest state is even greater: the highest oxidation number in the oxides equals the group number from Sc₂O₃ to Mn₂O₇. Beyond group 7 no oxide of Fe higher than Fe₂O₃ is known, although ferrates(VI), (FeO₄)²⁻, form in alkaline media and readily decompose to Fe₂O₃ and O₂. Oxocations also stabilise high states: VV as VO₂⁺, VIV as VO²⁺, TiIV as TiO²⁺. Oxygen beats fluorine — the highest Mn fluoride is MnF₄, but the highest oxide is Mn₂O₇ — because oxygen can form multiple bonds to metals. In covalent Mn₂O₇ each Mn is tetrahedrally surrounded by O, including a Mn–O–Mn bridge. Tetrahedral [MO₄]ⁿ⁻ ions are known for VV, CrVI, MnV, MnVI and MnVII. Oxides (Table 4.6). 4.3.8Chemical Reactivity and E° Valuesरासायनिक अभिक्रियाशीलता और E° मानChemical reactivity aur E°
Transition metals vary widely in reactivity. Many are electropositive enough to dissolve in mineral acids, while a few are ‘noble’ (unaffected by single acids). In the first series, all metals except copper are relatively reactive and are oxidised by 1 M H⁺, though the actual rate can be slow — Ti and V are passive to dilute non-oxidising acids at room temperature. E°(M²⁺/M) values show a decreasing tendency to form divalent cations across the series. Transition metals ki reactivity mein bahut farq hai. Kai itne electropositive hain ki mineral acids mein ghul jaate hain, jabki kuch ‘noble’ hain (single acids se affect nahi hote). First series mein copper ko chhodkar saare metals relatively reactive hain aur 1 M H⁺ se oxidise hote hain, halaanki rate slow ho sakta hai — Ti aur V room temperature par dilute non-oxidising acids ke liye passive hain. E°(M²⁺/M) values series mein divalent cation banane ki ghatti tendency dikhati hain. All 3d metals except Cu dissolve in acids (Ti and V react very slowly). The tendency to form M²⁺ falls across the series.
From E°(M³⁺/M²⁺): Mn³⁺ and Co³⁺ are the strongest oxidising agents in aqueous solution, while Ti²⁺, V²⁺ and Cr²⁺ are strong reducing agents that liberate hydrogen from dilute acid: 2Cr²⁺(aq) + 2H⁺(aq) → 2Cr³⁺(aq) + H₂(g).E°(M³⁺/M²⁺) E°(M³⁺/M²⁺) se: aqueous solution mein Mn³⁺ aur Co³⁺ sabse strong oxidising agents hain, jabki Ti²⁺, V²⁺ aur Cr²⁺ strong reducing agents hain jo dilute acid se hydrogen nikaalte hain: 2Cr²⁺(aq) + 2H⁺(aq) → 2Cr³⁺(aq) + H₂(g).Mn³⁺ and Co³⁺ are strong oxidants. Ti²⁺, V²⁺ and Cr²⁺ are strong reductants; Cr²⁺ even releases H₂ from acid.
4.3.9Magnetic Propertiesचुंबकीय गुणMagnetic properties
In a magnetic field two main behaviours are seen: diamagnetic substances are repelled and paramagnetic substances are attracted. Substances attracted very strongly are ferromagnetic — ferromagnetism is an extreme form of paramagnetism. Many transition metal ions are paramagnetic. Magnetic field mein do main behaviour dikhte hain: diamagnetic substances repel hote hain aur paramagnetic substances attract hote hain. Bahut strongly attract hone wale ferromagnetic hain — ferromagnetism, paramagnetism ka extreme roop hai. Kai transition metal ions paramagnetic hain.Diamagnetic: pushed away by a magnet. Paramagnetic: pulled in. Ferromagnetic: pulled very strongly. Many transition metal ions are paramagnetic.
Paramagnetism arises from unpaired electrons; each has a magnetic moment from its spin and orbital angular momentum. For compounds of the first transition series the orbital contribution is effectively quenched, so the moment depends only on the number of unpaired electrons and is given by the spin-only formula. One unpaired electron gives 1.73 BM; the moment increases with the number of unpaired electrons, so a measured moment tells us how many unpaired electrons are present. (Experimental data are mainly for hydrated ions in solution or in the solid state.) Paramagnetism unpaired electrons se aata hai; har ek ka magnetic moment uske spin aur orbital angular momentum se hota hai. First transition series ke compounds mein orbital contribution effectively quench ho jaata hai, isliye moment sirf unpaired electrons ki ginti par depend karta hai aur spin-only formula se milta hai. Ek unpaired electron = 1.73 BM; unpaired electrons badhne par moment badhta hai, isliye measured moment batata hai ki kitne unpaired electrons hain.Unpaired electrons cause paramagnetism. For 3d ions only spin counts: μ = √(n(n+2)) BM. One unpaired electron gives 1.73 BM.

Coloured ions
When an electron from a lower-energy d orbital is excited to a higher-energy d orbital, the energy of excitation corresponds to the frequency of light absorbed (Unit 5). This frequency generally lies in the visible region, and the colour we observe is the complementary colour of the light absorbed. The frequency absorbed is decided by the nature of the ligand. In aqueous solutions, water molecules are the ligands, and the colours are listed in NCERT Table 4.8 (Fig 4.5). Ions with d⁰ (Sc³⁺, Ti⁴⁺) or d¹⁰ (Zn²⁺) have no possible d–d transition, so they are colourless. Jab koi electron kam energy wale d orbital se zyada energy wale d orbital mein excite hota hai, to excitation energy absorb hui light ki frequency ke barabar hoti hai (Unit 5). We see the complementary colour. d⁰ and d¹⁰ ions have no such jump, so they are colourless.

Complex compounds
Complex compounds are those in which metal ions bind a number of anions or neutral molecules, giving complex species with characteristic properties, e.g. [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻, [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻, [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺ and [PtCl₄]²⁻ (details in Unit 5). Transition metals form a very large number of complexes because of (1) the comparatively small size of their ions, (2) their high ionic charges and (3) the availability of d orbitals for bond formation. Complex compounds woh hain jinme metal ions kai anions ya neutral molecules se judkar khaas properties wali complex species banate hain, jaise [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻, [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻, [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺ aur [PtCl₄]²⁻ (detail Unit 5 mein). Transition metals bahut saare complexes banate hain kyunki (1) inke ions chhote hote hain, (2) ionic charge high hota hai aur (3) bonding ke liye d orbitals available hote hain.Transition metal ions bind ligands to form complexes like [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺. Reasons: small ions, high charge, free d orbitals.
4.3.12Catalytic Propertiesउत्प्रेरकीय गुणCatalytic properties
Transition metals and their compounds are known for catalytic activity, because they can adopt multiple oxidation states and form complexes. Examples: vanadium(V) oxide (Contact process), finely divided iron (Haber's process) and nickel (catalytic hydrogenation). At a solid surface, bonds form between reactant molecules and surface atoms of the catalyst (first-row metals use 3d and 4s electrons for this). This increases the concentration of reactants at the surface and weakens bonds in the reacting molecules — the activation energy is lowered. Transition metals aur unke compounds catalytic activity ke liye famous hain, kyunki ye kai oxidation states apna sakte hain aur complexes bana sakte hain. Examples: vanadium(V) oxide (Contact process), finely divided iron (Haber process) aur nickel (catalytic hydrogenation). Solid surface par reactant molecules aur catalyst ke surface atoms ke beech bonds bante hain (first-row metals iske liye 3d aur 4s electrons use karte hain). Isse surface par reactants ki concentration badhti hai aur reacting molecules ke bonds weak hote hain — activation energy kam hoti hai. They catalyse because they change oxidation state and form complexes. Examples: V₂O₅, Fe, Ni. Surfaces hold reactants and weaken their bonds.
Because transition metal ions can change their oxidation states, they are even more effective. Iron(III) catalyses the reaction between iodide and persulphate ions: 2I⁻ + S₂O₈²⁻ → I₂ + 2SO₄²⁻. Explanation: Fe³⁺ first oxidises I⁻ and becomes Fe²⁺; Fe²⁺ is then oxidised back to Fe³⁺ by persulphate — the catalyst is regenerated (see the cycle). Transition metal ions apni oxidation state badal sakte hain, isliye ye aur bhi effective catalysts hain. Iron(III) iodide aur persulphate ions ke reaction ko catalyse karta hai: 2I⁻ + S₂O₈²⁻ → I₂ + 2SO₄²⁻. Explanation: Fe³⁺ pehle I⁻ ko oxidise karke Fe²⁺ ban jaata hai; phir persulphate Fe²⁺ ko wapas Fe³⁺ bana deta hai — catalyst regenerate ho jaata hai (cycle dekhiye).Fe³⁺ speeds up I⁻ + S₂O₈²⁻ by switching to Fe²⁺ and back.

Interstitial compounds are formed when small atoms like H, C or N are trapped inside the crystal lattices of metals. They are usually non-stoichiometric and neither typically ionic nor covalent, e.g. TiC, Mn₄N, Fe₃H, VH₀.₅₆ and TiH₁.₇. These formulas do not correspond to any normal oxidation state of the metal. Their main characteristics: (i) higher melting points than the pure metals; (ii) very hard — some borides approach diamond in hardness; (iii) they retain metallic conductivity; (iv) they are chemically inert. interstitial compound tab bante hain jab H, C ya N jaise chhote atoms metals ke crystal lattice ke andar fans jaate hain. An alloy is a blend of metals prepared by mixing the components. Alloys may be homogeneous solid solutions in which atoms of one metal are distributed randomly among atoms of the other; such alloys form between atoms whose metallic radii are within about 15 per cent of each other. Because transition metals have similar radii and other characteristics, they form alloys readily; the alloys are hard and often have high melting points. The best known are ferrous alloys — Cr, V, W, Mo and Mn are used to make a variety of steels and stainless steel. Alloys of transition with non-transition metals, such as brass (copper–zinc) and bronze (copper–tin), are also industrially important. alloy metals ko mix karke banaya gaya blend hai. As the oxidation number increases, ionic character decreases and acidic character increases. Mn₂O₇ is a covalent green oil; even CrO₃ and V₂O₅ have low melting points. In these higher oxides acidic character is predominant: Mn₂O₇ gives HMnO₄, and CrO₃ gives H₂CrO₄ and H₂Cr₂O₇. V₂O₅ is amphoteric, though mainly acidic — it gives VO₄³⁻ as well as VO₂⁺ salts. In vanadium there is a gradual change from basic V₂O₃ to less basic V₂O₄ to amphoteric V₂O₅; V₂O₄ dissolves in acids to give VO²⁺ salts, and V₂O₅ reacts with alkalis to give VO₄³⁻ and with acids to give VO₂⁺. 4.5The Inner Transition Elements (f-Block): The Lanthanoidsआंतरिक संक्रमण तत्व (f-ब्लॉक): लैंथेनॉयडInner transition elements: Lanthanoids
The f-block has two series: the lanthanoids (the fourteen elements following lanthanum) and the actinoids (the fourteen elements following actinium). Lanthanum closely resembles the lanthanoids, so it is included in their discussion with the general symbol Ln; similarly actinium is discussed with the actinoids. The lanthanoids resemble one another more closely than members of an ordinary transition series. They have only one stable oxidation state (+3), so their chemistry shows the effect of small changes in size and nuclear charge along a series. Actinoid chemistry is much more complicated — a wide range of oxidation states and radioactivity make their study difficult.f-ब्लॉक में दो श्रेणियाँ हैं: लैंथेनॉयड (लैंथेनम के बाद के चौदह तत्व) और ऐक्टिनॉयड (ऐक्टिनियम के बाद के चौदह तत्व)। f-block mein do series hain: lanthanoids (lanthanum ke baad ke chaudah elements) aur actinoids (actinium ke baad ke chaudah elements). Lanthanum lanthanoids se bahut milta hai, isliye ise general symbol Ln ke saath inme shamil karte hain; isi tarah actinium ko actinoids ke saath padhte hain. Lanthanoids aapas mein normal transition series se kahin zyada milte-julte hain. Inki sirf ek stable oxidation state (+3) hai, isliye inki chemistry size aur nuclear charge ke chhote changes ka asar dikhati hai. Actinoids ki chemistry bahut complicated hai — kai oxidation states aur radioactivity inki study mushkil banati hai.Lanthanoids: 14 elements after La (Ce–Lu). Actinoids: 14 after Ac (Th–Lr). 4.5.2Atomic and Ionic Sizesपरमाणु और आयनिक आकारAtomic aur ionic size
The overall decrease in atomic and ionic radii from lanthanum to lutetium — the lanthanoid contraction — is a unique feature of lanthanoid chemistry, with far-reaching consequences for the third transition series. The decrease in atomic radii (from metal structures) is not quite regular, but in M³⁺ ions it is regular (Fig 4.6). The cause is the same as in an ordinary transition series — imperfect shielding of one electron by another in the same sub-shell — but the shielding of one 4f electron by another is even less than that of one d electron by another, so with increasing nuclear charge the size decreases fairly regularly. Lanthanum se lutetium tak atomic aur ionic radii mein overall kami — lanthanoid contraction — lanthanoid chemistry ki unique baat hai, jiska teesri transition series par bada asar hai. Wajah normal transition series jaisi hi hai — same sub-shell mein ek electron dusre ko theek se shield nahi karta — par 4f electron ki shielding d electron se bhi kam hai, isliye nuclear charge badhne par size kaafi regularly ghatta hai. From La to Lu the size shrinks (lanthanoid contraction). It is very regular for Ln³⁺ ions. Cause: 4f electrons shield each other very poorly.

In the lanthanoids, La(III) and Ln(III) compounds are predominant. Occasionally +2 and +4 ions are also obtained, in solution or in solids. This irregularity arises mainly from the extra stability of empty, half-filled or filled f subshells. Lanthanoids mein La(III) aur Ln(III) compounds predominant hain. - Ce(IV) — favoured by its noble gas configuration (4f⁰), but it is a strong oxidant that reverts to +3. E°(Ce⁴⁺/Ce³⁺) = +1.74 V, so it could oxidise water, but the reaction is very slow — hence Ce(IV) is a good analytical reagent. All lanthanoids are silvery white soft metals that tarnish rapidly in air. Hardness increases with atomic number — samarium is steel hard. Colour and magnetism. Many Ln³⁺ ions are coloured in solids and in solution, because of the f electrons; the absorption bands are narrow (excitation within the f level). Neither La³⁺ nor Lu³⁺ is coloured. Ionisation enthalpies. IE₁ is around 600 kJ mol⁻¹ and IE₂ about 1200 kJ mol⁻¹, comparable with calcium. Chemical behaviour. The earlier members are quite reactive, like calcium; with increasing atomic number they behave more like aluminium. E° for Ln³⁺(aq) + 3e⁻ → Ln(s) lies between −2.2 and −2.4 V, except Eu (−2.0 V) — a small variation. The metals combine with hydrogen when gently heated; the carbides Ln₃C, Ln₂C₃ and LnC₂ form when heated with carbon; they liberate hydrogen from dilute acids and burn in halogens to form halides. They form oxides M₂O₃ and hydroxides M(OH)₃ — the hydroxides are definite compounds, not just hydrated oxides, and are basic like alkaline earth oxides/hydroxides (Fig 4.7). Chemical behaviour. The actinoids include the fourteen elements from Th to Lr (NCERT Table 4.10). They are radioactive. 4.6.1Electronic Configurationsइलेक्ट्रॉनिक विन्यासElectronic configurations
All actinoids are believed to have 7s² with variable occupancy of the 5f and 6d subshells. The fourteen electrons are formally added to 5f — not in thorium (Z = 90) (Th = 6d²7s²), but from Pa onwards — and the 5f orbitals are complete at element 103. As in the lanthanoids, irregularities relate to the stability of f⁰, f⁷ and f¹⁴ occupancies: e.g. Am = [Rn] 5f⁷7s² and Cm = [Rn] 5f⁷6d¹7s². 5f orbitals resemble 4f in their angular part, but are not as buried as 4f, so 5f electrons can take part in bonding to a far greater extent. Maana jaata hai ki saare actinoids mein 7s² aur 5f aur 6d subshells ki variable occupancy hoti hai. Chaudah electrons formally 5f mein judte hain — thorium (Z = 90) mein nahi (Th = 6d²7s²), balki Pa se aage — aur element 103 par 5f orbitals full hote hain. Lanthanoids ki tarah irregularities f⁰, f⁷ aur f¹⁴ occupancy ki stability se judi hain: jaise Am = [Rn] 5f⁷7s² aur Cm = [Rn] 5f⁷6d¹7s². 5f orbitals angular part mein 4f jaise hain, par 4f jitne andar dabe nahi, isliye 5f electrons bonding mein kahin zyada hissa le sakte hain.Actinoids have 7s² and fill 5f/6d irregularly (Th has no 5f electron). f⁰, f⁷, f¹⁴ are favoured (Am 5f⁷7s², Cm 5f⁷6d¹7s²). 5f electrons bond more than 4f.
4.6.2Ionic Sizesआयनिक आकारIonic sizes
As in the lanthanoids, there is a gradual decrease in the size of atoms or M³⁺ ions across the series — the actinoid contraction. But the contraction is greater from element to element in this series, because of poor shielding by 5f electrons. Lanthanoids ki tarah series mein atoms ya M³⁺ ions ka size dheere-dheere ghatta hai — actinoid contraction. Par ye contraction is series mein ek element se agle tak zyada hota hai, kyunki 5f electrons ki shielding kamzor hai.Actinoid contraction: sizes shrink across the series, more per step than in lanthanoids, because 5f electrons shield poorly.
4.6.3Oxidation Statesऑक्सीकरण अवस्थाएँOxidation states
Actinoids show a greater range of oxidation states, partly because the 5f, 6d and 7s levels have comparable energies (Table 4.11). In general they show +3. Elements in the first half of the series frequently show higher states: the maximum rises from +4 in Th to +5 in Pa, +6 in U and +7 in Np, and then decreases. Like the lanthanoids, they have more compounds in +3 than in +4, but +3 and +4 ions tend to hydrolyse. Because the distribution of oxidation states is so uneven, it is unsatisfactory to review actinoid chemistry in terms of oxidation states. Actinoids oxidation states ki zyada wide range dikhate hain, kuch had tak isliye ki 5f, 6d aur 7s levels ki energies comparable hain (Table 4.11). Generally ye +3 dikhate hain. Series ke pehle half ke elements aksar higher states dikhate hain: maximum state Th mein +4 se Pa mein +5, U mein +6 aur Np mein +7 tak badhti hai, phir ghatti hai. Actinoids show many states because 5f, 6d and 7s are close in energy. +3 is general; the top state rises to +7 at Np, then falls.

4.6.4General Characteristics and Comparison with Lanthanoidsसामान्य अभिलक्षण और लैंथेनॉयडों से तुलनाGeneral characteristics aur lanthanoids se comparison
Actinoid metals are all silvery but show a variety of structures, because of irregularities in metallic radii that are far greater than in lanthanoids. They are highly reactive metals, especially when finely divided: boiling water gives a mixture of oxide and hydride, and they combine with most non-metals at moderate temperatures. Hydrochloric acid attacks all of them, but most are only slightly affected by nitric acid (protective oxide layers); alkalies have no action. Actinoid metals sab silvery dikhte hain par kai tarah ki structures rakhte hain, kyunki inki metallic radii mein irregularities lanthanoids se kahin zyada hain. Ye highly reactive metals hain, khaaskar finely divided hone par: ubalta paani oxide aur hydride ka mixture deta hai, aur ye moderate temperature par zyadatar non-metals se judte hain. Hydrochloric acid sab par attack karta hai, par zyadatar nitric acid se thoda hi affect hote hain (protective oxide layer); alkalies ka koi asar nahi.Silvery, many structures, very reactive. HCl attacks them; HNO₃ hardly (oxide layer); alkalis do nothing.
Magnetic properties of actinoids are more complex than those of lanthanoids; the susceptibility varies roughly in parallel with the number of unpaired 5f electrons, but the lanthanoids have higher values. The ionisation enthalpies of early actinoids are lower than those of early lanthanoids — when 5f orbitals begin to fill they penetrate less into the inner core, so 5f electrons are more effectively shielded from the nuclear charge than 4f electrons; the outer electrons are held less firmly and are available for bonding. Magnetism is more complex than in lanthanoids. Early actinoids have lower IE, so their electrons are freer to bond.
Lanthanoid-like behaviour appears only in the second half of the actinoid series, though even the early actinoids resemble each other closely and vary gradually in properties that do not involve a change of oxidation state. Both contractions affect the sizes and properties of the elements that follow them; the lanthanoid contraction is more important, because the chemistry of the elements after the actinoids is much less known. Lanthanoid jaisa behaviour actinoid series ke sirf second half mein dikhta hai, halaanki early actinoids bhi aapas mein bahut milte hain. Dono contractions apne baad ke elements ke size aur properties ko affect karte hain; lanthanoid contraction zyada important hai, kyunki actinoids ke baad ke elements ki chemistry abhi bahut kam pata hai.Actinoids act like lanthanoids only in their second half. 4.7Some Applications of d- and f-Block Elementsd- और f-ब्लॉक तत्वों के कुछ अनुप्रयोगd- aur f-block ke applications
Iron and steels are the most important construction materials; their production is based on reducing iron oxides, removing impurities and adding carbon and alloying metals such as Cr, Mn and Ni. Some compounds are made for special purposes: TiO₂ for the pigment industry and MnO₂ for dry battery cells. The battery industry also needs Zn and Ni/Cd. Group 11 elements are still called coinage metals, though Ag and Au are now collection items; contemporary UK ‘copper’ coins are copper-coated steel and UK ‘silver’ coins are a Cu/Ni alloy. Iron aur steels sabse important construction materials hain; inka production iron oxides ke reduction, impurities hatane aur carbon aur Cr, Mn, Ni jaise alloying metals milane par based hai. Many metals and compounds are essential industrial catalysts: V₂O₅ — oxidation of SO₂ in the manufacture of sulphuric acid; TiCl₄ with Al(CH₃)₃ — the Ziegler catalysts for making polyethylene (polythene); iron catalysts — Haber process (NH₃ from N₂/H₂); nickel — hydrogenation of fats; PdCl₂ — Wacker process (oxidation of ethene to ethanal); nickel complexes — polymerisation of alkynes and other organic compounds such as benzene. The photographic industry relies on the light-sensitive properties of AgBr. Kai metals aur compounds industry ke zaroori catalysts hain: V₂O₅ — sulphuric acid banane mein SO₂ ka oxidation; TiCl₄ ke saath Al(CH₃)₃ — polyethylene (polythene) ke Ziegler catalysts; iron catalysts — Haber process (N₂/H₂ se NH₃); nickel — fats ka hydrogenation; PdCl₂ — Wacker process (ethene ka ethanal mein oxidation); nickel complexes — alkynes aur benzene jaise organic compounds ka polymerisation.
