Parts and what they mean
- Counter ions (4 K⁺) (प्रति आयन (4 K⁺)) — Ionisable groups written outside the square bracket. They balance the −4 charge of the complex ion.
- Coordination sphere [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻ (समन्वय मंडल [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻) — The central ion and the ligands attached to it, enclosed in square brackets. Its charge is written as a right superscript.
- Central atom/ion: Fe²⁺ (केंद्रीय परमाणु/आयन: Fe²⁺) — The ion to which a fixed number of ligands is bound in a definite geometry. It accepts electron pairs, so it is a Lewis acid.
- Ligand: CN⁻ (cyanido) (लिगन्ड: CN⁻ (सायनिडो)) — Ions or molecules bound to the central ion. CN⁻ is unidentate: it binds through one donor atom.
- Donor atom: C of CN⁻ (दाता परमाणु: CN⁻ का C) — The atom of the ligand that actually donates the electron pair to the metal.
- Coordination polyhedron: octahedral (समन्वय बहुफलक: अष्टफलकीय) — The spatial arrangement of the six donor atoms around Fe: an octahedron.
- Oxidation number and coordination number (ऑक्सीकरण संख्या और समन्वय संख्या) — Oxidation number = charge left on Fe if all ligands are removed with their shared electron pairs: +2, written Fe(II). Coordination number = number of donor atoms bonded = 6.
