In the previous unit you met C–O single bonds (alcohols, phenols, ethers). This unit is about the carbon–oxygen double bond, >C=O, called the carbonyl group. Carbon of the carbonyl group bonded to carbon/hydrogen and –OH gives carboxylic acids; bonded to –NH₂ gives amides; bonded to a halogen gives acyl halides. Esters and anhydrides are derivatives of carboxylic acids. Pichhli unit mein aapne C–O single bond (alcohols, phenols, ethers) padhe. Naamkaran — aldehydes aur ketones
(a) Common names. The common name of an aldehyde comes from the common name of the corresponding carboxylic acid: replace “-ic acid” by “aldehyde” (formic acid → formaldehyde, acetic acid → acetaldehyde). Positions of substituents are shown by Greek letters α, β, γ, δ — the α-carbon is the one directly linked to the –CHO group, β the next, and so on.(a) सामान्य नाम। (a) Common names. Aldehyde ka common name corresponding carboxylic acid ke common name se banta hai: “-ic acid” ko “aldehyde” se badaliye (formic acid → formaldehyde, acetic acid → acetaldehyde). Substituents ki position Greek letters α, β, γ, δ se dikhate hain — α-carbon woh hai jo –CHO group se seedha juda hai, phir β, aur aage.Common names come from the acid names; α is the carbon next to CHO.
Ketones are named by naming the two alkyl or aryl groups on the C=O (ethyl methyl ketone). Positions are α, α′, β, β′ starting from the carbons next to C=O. Some keep historical names: dimethyl ketone is acetone. Alkyl phenyl ketones are named by adding the acyl group name before “phenone”: CH₃COC₆H₅ = acetophenone, C₆H₅COC₆H₅ = benzophenone. Ketones ka naam C=O par lage do alkyl ya aryl groups se rakhte hain (ethyl methyl ketone). Positions C=O ke bagal wale carbons se α, α′, β, β′. Kuch ke historical naam hain: dimethyl ketone = acetone. Alkyl phenyl ketones mein acyl group ka naam “phenone” se pehle lagate hain: CH₃COC₆H₅ = acetophenone, C₆H₅COC₆H₅ = benzophenone.Ketone common name = the two groups + “ketone”; acetophenone and benzophenone are special names.

Replace the ending “-e” of the alkane by “-al” (aldehydes) or “-one” (ketones). For aldehydes, numbering starts from the CHO carbon (C-1); for ketones, from the end nearer to C=O. Substituents are prefixed in alphabetical order with their position numbers. In cyclic ketones the carbonyl carbon is C-1. When –CHO is attached to a ring, add the suffix “carbaldehyde” to the full name of the cycloalkane (ring numbering starts at the carbon bearing –CHO). The simplest aromatic aldehyde is benzenecarbaldehyde, but benzaldehyde is also accepted by IUPAC; others are named as substituted benzaldehydes.(b) IUPAC नाम। (b) IUPAC names. The carbonyl carbon is sp² hybridised and forms three σ bonds. Its fourth electron stays in a p orbital and forms a π bond with oxygen by overlapping with a p orbital of oxygen. Oxygen also has two non-bonding electron pairs. So the carbonyl carbon and the three atoms attached to it lie in one plane, the π electron cloud is above and below this plane, and the bond angles are about 120° (trigonal coplanar). Carbonyl carbon sp² hybridised hai aur teen σ bonds banata hai. Iska chautha electron p orbital mein rehta hai aur oxygen ke p orbital se overlap karke π bond banata hai. Oxygen par do non-bonding electron pairs bhi hain. Isliye carbonyl carbon aur us se jude teeno atoms ek plane mein hain, π electron cloud is plane ke upar-neeche hai aur bond angles lagbhag 120° hain (trigonal coplanar).C=O carbon is sp², flat, 120°; the π cloud lies above and below the plane.

So the carbonyl carbon is an electrophilic (Lewis acid) centre and the carbonyl oxygen a nucleophilic (Lewis base) centre. Carbonyl compounds have substantial dipole moments and are more polar than ethers. The high polarity is explained by resonance between a neutral structure A and a dipolar structure B (see the resonance).C=O C=O bond polarised hai kyunki oxygen carbon se zyada electronegative hai. Isliye carbonyl carbon electrophilic (Lewis acid) centre aur carbonyl oxygen nucleophilic (Lewis base) centre hai. Carbonyl compounds ke dipole moments kaafi hote hain aur yeh ethers se zyada polar hain. Itni polarity ko neutral structure A aur dipolar structure B ke resonance se samjhate hain (resonance dekhiye).O pulls electrons: C becomes δ+ (attacked by nucleophiles), O becomes δ−.

- 1. Oxidation of alcohols: primary alcohols give aldehydes, secondary alcohols give ketones (Unit 7). PCC (pyridinium chlorochromate) stops a primary alcohol at the aldehyde stage.1. 1. Suitable for volatile alcohols; used in industry.2. 2. - 3. From hydrocarbons — (i) ozonolysis of alkenes: O₃ followed by zinc dust and water gives aldehydes, ketones or a mixture, depending on how the alkene is substituted. (ii) Hydration of alkynes: water adds to ethyne with H₂SO₄ and HgSO₄ to give acetaldehyde; all other alkynes give ketones.3. 3. 1. From acyl chloride — Rosenmund reduction. An acyl chloride is hydrogenated over palladium on barium sulphate. BaSO₄ partly poisons the catalyst, so the reaction stops at the aldehyde (tap the reaction).1. 1. BaSO₄ catalyst ko thoda poison karta hai, isliye reaction aldehyde par ruk jaata hai (reaction tap kijiye).RCOCl + H₂ over Pd–BaSO₄ gives RCHO.
2. From nitriles and esters — Stephen reaction. Nitriles are reduced by stannous chloride + HCl to the imine, which on hydrolysis gives the aldehyde. Alternatively, nitriles are selectively reduced by diisobutylaluminium hydride (DIBAL-H) to imines and then hydrolysed to aldehydes — a C=C in the same molecule is not touched. Esters are also reduced to aldehydes by DIBAL-H.2. 2. Nitriles aur esters se — Stephen reaction. Nitriles stannous chloride + HCl se imine mein reduce hote hain, jiska hydrolysis aldehyde deta hai. Doosra tareeka: diisobutylaluminium hydride (DIBAL-H) nitriles ko selectively imine tak reduce karta hai, phir hydrolysis se aldehyde — usi molecule ka C=C chhua nahi jaata. Esters bhi DIBAL-H se aldehydes mein reduce hote hain.RCN → (SnCl₂/HCl) imine → (H₃O⁺) RCHO; DIBAL-H does the same for nitriles and esters.
3. From hydrocarbons (aromatic aldehydes). (i) Strong oxidising agents turn toluene into benzoic acid, but special reagents stop at the aldehyde by converting –CH₃ into an intermediate that is hard to oxidise further: (a) Etard reaction — chromyl chloride (CrO₂Cl₂) forms a chromium complex that hydrolyses to benzaldehyde; (b) chromic oxide (CrO₃) in acetic anhydride gives benzylidene diacetate, hydrolysed by aqueous acid to benzaldehyde; (ii) side-chain chlorination of toluene gives benzal chloride, which on hydrolysis gives benzaldehyde (the commercial method); (iii) Gatterman–Koch reaction — benzene or its derivative with CO and HCl in the presence of anhydrous AlCl₃ or CuCl gives benzaldehyde.3. 3. 3. Oxidationऑक्सीकरणOxidation
Aldehydes are easily oxidised to carboxylic acids by common oxidising agents (HNO₃, KMnO₄, K₂Cr₂O₇) and even by mild ones — Tollens’ and Fehling’s reagents. Ketones are oxidised only under vigorous conditions (strong oxidants, high temperature); C–C bonds break and a mixture of acids with fewer carbon atoms forms. The mild reagents therefore distinguish aldehydes from ketones. Aldehydes aasani se oxidise hokar carboxylic acids bante hain — common oxidising agents (HNO₃, KMnO₄, K₂Cr₂O₇) se aur mild reagents — Tollens’ aur Fehling’s — se bhi. (i) Aldol condensation. Aldehydes and ketones with at least one α-hydrogen react in the presence of dilute alkali to form β-hydroxy aldehydes (aldol) or β-hydroxy ketones (ketol) — the aldol reaction (aldol = ALDehyde + alcohOL). The aldol/ketol readily loses water to give an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound — the aldol condensation product. The name aldol condensation is used for ketones too. (NCERT’s summary prints “α-hydroxy” — the aldol is a β-hydroxy compound, as the section itself says.)(i) ऐल्डोल संघनन। (i) Aldol condensation. Compounds containing the carboxyl group, –COOH (a carbonyl group attached to a hydroxyl group — hence “carb-oxyl”) are carboxylic acids: aliphatic (RCOOH) or aromatic (ArCOOH). Higher aliphatic acids (C₁₂–C₁₈), called fatty acids, occur in natural fats as esters of glycerol. Acids are the starting materials for anhydrides, esters, acid chlorides and amides. Carboxyl group, –COOH (hydroxyl group se juda carbonyl group — isliye “carb-oxyl”) wale compounds carboxylic acids hain: aliphatic (RCOOH) ya aromatic (ArCOOH). In carboxylic acids the bonds to the carboxyl carbon lie in one plane and are about 120° apart. The carboxylic carbon is less electrophilic than a carbonyl carbon because the lone pair of the –OH oxygen is in resonance with C=O. That is why carboxylic acids do not give the nucleophilic addition reactions typical of aldehydes and ketones. Carboxylic acids mein carboxyl carbon ke bonds ek plane mein aur lagbhag 120° ke antar par hain. Carboxylic carbon carbonyl carbon se kam electrophilic hai kyunki –OH oxygen ka lone pair C=O ke saath resonance mein hai. Isliye carboxylic acids aldehyde-ketone jaise nucleophilic addition reactions nahi dete.Flat, 120°; the –OH lone pair makes the carbon less δ+.

Aliphatic acids up to nine carbon atoms are colourless liquids with unpleasant odours; higher acids are wax-like, practically odourless solids (low volatility). Carboxylic acids boil higher than aldehydes, ketones and even alcohols of comparable molecular mass because of more extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonding. These hydrogen bonds are not broken completely even in the vapour phase — most acids exist as dimers in the vapour phase or in aprotic solvents (see the dimer). Nau carbon atoms tak ki aliphatic acids buri smell wale colourless liquids hain; badi acids wax jaise, lagbhag odourless solids (kam volatility). Carboxylic acids comparable molecular mass ke aldehydes, ketones aur alcohols se bhi zyada temperature par ubalte hain kyunki inme zyada extensive intermolecular H-bonding hai. Yeh H-bonds vapour phase mein bhi poore nahi toot-te — zyadatar acids vapour phase ya aprotic solvents mein dimer ke roop mein rehte hain (dimer dekhiye).Acids boil highest: two H-bonds hold pairs (dimers) together.
Simple aliphatic acids with up to four carbon atoms are miscible with water (hydrogen bonds with water); solubility falls as the number of carbon atoms rises, and higher acids are practically insoluble (hydrophobic hydrocarbon part). Benzoic acid is nearly insoluble in cold water. Acids are also soluble in less polar organic solvents (benzene, ether, alcohol, chloroform). Chaar carbon tak ki simple aliphatic acids paani mein miscible hain (paani se H-bonds); carbon badhne par solubility ghatti hai aur badi acids lagbhag insoluble hain (hydrophobic hydrocarbon part). The carboxylate ion is stabilised by two equivalent resonance structures with the negative charge on the more electronegative oxygen atoms. The phenoxide ion has non-equivalent structures in which the charge sits on less electronegative carbon atoms, so its resonance matters less. The charge in carboxylate is delocalised over two oxygens; in phenoxide it is less effectively delocalised over one oxygen and some carbons. So carboxylate is more stable and carboxylic acids are more acidic than phenols (see both ions). Phenols se strong kyun? Carboxylate ion do equivalent resonance structures se stable hai jinme negative charge zyada electronegative oxygen atoms par hai. Phenoxide ion ki structures non-equivalent hain jinme charge kam electronegative carbon par hai, isliye uska resonance kam important hai. Carboxylate mein charge do oxygens par delocalised hai; phenoxide mein ek oxygen aur kuch carbons par kam effectively. Isliye carboxylate zyada stable hai aur carboxylic acids phenols se zyada acidic hain (dono ions dekhiye).Carboxylate spreads − over two O atoms equally; phenoxide puts it partly on carbon.

Phenyl or vinyl directly on –COOH increases acidity, contrary to what resonance alone would suggest, because the carboxyl carbon is attached to a more electronegative sp² carbon (benzoic vs acetic). Halogenation — Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky (HVZ) reaction: α-hydrogen wali acids thode red phosphorus ke saath Cl₂ ya Br₂ se α-position par halogenate hokar α-halocarboxylic acids deti hain (tap). 2. Ring substitution: aromatic acids electrophilic substitution deti hain; –COOH deactivating, meta-directing group hai. Yeh Friedel–Crafts reaction nahi deti — ring deactivated hai aur AlCl₃ (Lewis acid) carboxyl group se jud jaata hai.HVZ: α-H → α-X with X₂/red P; COOH directs meta; no Friedel–Crafts.
