Parts and what they mean
- Toluene (methylbenzene) (टॉलूईन (मेथिलबेंज़ीन)) — Strong oxidants would give benzoic acid; these reagents stop the oxidation at the aldehyde stage.
- Chromium complex (Etard) (क्रोमियम संकुल (एटार्ड)) — Chromyl chloride converts –CH₃ into this complex, which is difficult to oxidise further; hydrolysis gives benzaldehyde.
- Benzylidene diacetate (बेन्ज़िलिडीन डाइऐसीटेट) — Formed with CrO₃ in acetic anhydride; hydrolysed by aqueous acid to benzaldehyde.
- Benzal chloride (C₆H₅CHCl₂) (बेन्ज़ल क्लोराइड (C₆H₅CHCl₂)) — Side-chain chlorination product; hydrolysis replaces the two Cl by =O.
- Benzene (बेंज़ीन) — Treated with CO and HCl in presence of anhydrous AlCl₃ or CuCl.
- Carbon monoxide + hydrogen chloride (कार्बन मोनोऑक्साइड + हाइड्रोजन क्लोराइड) — Together they put a –CHO group on the ring (formylation).
- Benzaldehyde (बेंज़ैल्डिहाइड) — C₆H₅CHO — benzenecarbaldehyde (IUPAC also accepts benzaldehyde).
