Alcohols, phenols and ethers are the basic compounds for making detergents, antiseptics and fragrances respectively. Replace one H of a hydrocarbon by –OH and you get an alcohol (aliphatic, e.g. CH₃OH) or a phenol (aromatic, e.g. C₆H₅OH). Replace it by an alkoxy/aryloxy group (R–O / Ar–O) and you get an ether, e.g. CH₃OCH₃ (dimethyl ether). You meet them every day: the spirit used to polish wooden furniture is chiefly ethanol, and sugar, cotton and paper are all made of compounds with –OH groups. Alcohols, phenols aur ethers kramashah detergents, antiseptics aur fragrances banane ke basic compounds hain. Hydrocarbon ka ek H –OH se badaliye to alcohol (aliphatic, jaise CH₃OH) ya phenol (aromatic, jaise C₆H₅OH) milta hai. Use alkoxy/aryloxy group (R–O / Ar–O) se badaliye to ether milta hai, jaise CH₃OCH₃ (dimethyl ether). Ye roz milte hain: furniture polish wali spirit mainly ethanol hai, aur cheeni, cotton aur kagaz sab –OH wale compounds se bane hain.Alcohol = –OH on a chain carbon. Phenol = –OH on a benzene ring. Ether = R–O–R′.

Common name = name of the alkyl group + “alcohol”: CH₃OH is methyl alcohol. IUPAC name: take the longest chain carrying –OH, replace the final “e” of the alkane by “ol”, and number the chain from the end nearest to –OH; give the positions of –OH and other substituents by locants. For polyhydric alcohols the “e” is kept and di, tri… is put before “ol”: HO–CH₂–CH₂–OH is ethane-1,2-diol. Common name = alkyl group ka naam + “alcohol”: CH₃OH methyl alcohol hai. Functional groups ki structures
In alcohols the O of –OH is joined to carbon by a σ bond formed by overlap of an sp³ orbital of carbon with an sp³ orbital of oxygen. The C–O–H angle is slightly less than the tetrahedral angle (109°28′) because the two lone pairs on oxygen repel the bond pairs (NCERT Fig 7.1: methanol C–O 142 pm, C–O–H 108.9°). Alcohols mein –OH ka O carbon se σ bond se juda hai jo carbon ke sp³ orbital aur oxygen ke sp³ orbital ke overlap se banta hai. Oxygen ke do lone pairs ke repulsion ki wajah se C–O–H angle tetrahedral angle (109°28′) se thoda kam hai (NCERT Fig 7.1: methanol C–O 142 pm, C–O–H 108.9°).Alcohol: O is sp³, angle a bit less than 109°28′.

Its C–O bond (136 pm) is slightly shorter than in methanol because of (i) partial double-bond character from conjugation of the O lone pair with the ring and (ii) the sp² hybridised carbon. In ethers the two bond pairs and two lone pairs on O are roughly tetrahedral, but the C–O–C angle (111.7° in methoxymethane) is slightly greater than tetrahedral because the two bulky R groups repel; the C–O bond (141 pm) is almost the same as in alcohols. Phenol mein –OH ring ke sp² carbon se juda hai. Iska C–O bond (136 pm) methanol se thoda chhota hai kyunki (i) O ke lone pair ke ring ke saath conjugation se partial double bond character aur (ii) carbon sp² hybridised hai. Ethers mein O ke do bond pairs aur do lone pairs lagbhag tetrahedral hain, par C–O–C angle (methoxymethane mein 111.7°) tetrahedral se thoda zyada hai kyunki do bulky R groups repel karte hain; C–O bond (141 pm) lagbhag alcohols jitna hai.Phenol C–O shorter (136 pm). Ether angle bigger (111.7°).

1. From alkenes — (i) acid-catalysed hydration. Alkenes react with water in the presence of an acid catalyst to give alcohols. With unsymmetrical alkenes the addition follows Markovnikov’s rule. Mechanism (tap the steps): Step 1 — protonation of the alkene by electrophilic attack of H₃O⁺ gives a carbocation; Step 2 — nucleophilic attack of water on the carbocation; Step 3 — deprotonation gives the alcohol.1. 1. Alcohols and phenols have two parts: an alkyl/aryl group and the –OH group. The properties come chiefly from the –OH; the alkyl/aryl part only modifies them. Boiling points rise with the number of carbon atoms (stronger van der Waals forces) and fall with branching (less surface area). Above all, the –OH takes part in intermolecular hydrogen bonding (see the H-bond chain), so alcohols and phenols boil much higher than hydrocarbons, ethers, haloalkanes and haloarenes of comparable molecular mass. Alcohols aur phenols ke do hisse hain: alkyl/aryl group aur –OH group. Boiling points carbon atoms ki ginti ke saath badhte hain (van der Waals forces badhte hain) aur branching se ghatte hain (surface area kam). Ethanol and propane have comparable molecular masses but very different boiling points; methoxymethane lies in between. The high boiling point of alcohols is due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which is lacking in ethers and hydrocarbons (compare them in the bar chart). Solubility: alcohols and phenols dissolve in water because they form hydrogen bonds with water; solubility decreases as the hydrophobic alkyl/aryl part grows, and several lower alcohols are miscible in all proportions. Ethanol aur propane ke molecular mass milte-julte hain par boiling points bahut alag; methoxymethane beech mein hai. Alcohols are versatile: they react both as nucleophiles (the O–H bond breaks; R–O–H attacks an electrophile with its O lone pair) and, once protonated, as electrophiles (the C–O bond breaks; a nucleophile attacks the carbon of R–OH₂⁺). So the reactions of alcohols and phenols fall into two groups: (a) cleavage of O–H and (b) cleavage of C–O. Alcohols versatile hain: ve nucleophile ki tarah (O–H bond toot-ta hai; R–O–H apne O ke lone pair se electrophile par attack karta hai) aur protonated hokar electrophile ki tarah (C–O bond toot-ta hai; nucleophile R–OH₂⁺ ke carbon par attack karta hai) dono react karte hain. Isliye reactions do groups mein: (a) O–H ka cleavage aur (b) C–O ka cleavage.Two kinds of reactions: O–H breaks, or C–O breaks.
(a) Reactions involving cleavage of O–H bond(a) O–H बंध के विदलन वाली अभिक्रियाएँ(a) O–H bond toot-ne wali reactions
1. Acidity — (i) reaction with metals. Alcohols and phenols react with active metals such as sodium, potassium and aluminium to give alkoxides/phenoxides and hydrogen gas. Phenols also react with aqueous NaOH to form sodium phenoxide — alcohols do not. These reactions show that alcohols and phenols are Brönsted acids (they can give a proton to a stronger base B:).1. 1. Acidity — (i) metals se reaction. Alcohols aur phenols sodium, potassium aur aluminium jaisi active metals se react karke alkoxide/phenoxide aur hydrogen gas dete hain. Phenols aqueous NaOH se bhi sodium phenoxide banate hain — alcohols nahi. Isse pata chalta hai ki alcohols aur phenols Brönsted acids hain (strong base B: ko proton de sakte hain).Na metal + alcohol or phenol → H₂ gas. Only phenol reacts with NaOH.
(ii) Acidity of alcohols comes from the polar O–H bond. An electron-releasing group (–CH₃, –C₂H₅) increases electron density on O, makes the O–H bond less polar and so decreases acid strength. Hence acid strength: primary > secondary > tertiary (R–CH₂OH > R₂CHOH >> R₃C–OH). Alcohols are weaker acids than water: water gives a proton to an alkoxide (R–O⁻ + H–OH → R–OH + OH⁻), so alkoxide is a stronger base than hydroxide (sodium ethoxide is a stronger base than sodium hydroxide). Alcohols are also Brönsted bases — the lone pairs on O accept protons.(ii) Electron-releasing group (–CH₃, –C₂H₅) O par electron density badhakar O–H bond ki polarity ghatata hai aur acid strength ghatata hai. Isliye acid strength: primary > secondary > tertiary (R–CH₂OH > R₂CHOH >> R₃C–OH). Alcohols paani se weak acid hain: paani alkoxide ko proton deta hai (R–O⁻ + H–OH → R–OH + OH⁻), yaani alkoxide hydroxide se strong base hai (sodium ethoxide, sodium hydroxide se strong base). Alcohols Brönsted bases bhi hain — O ke lone pairs proton lete hain.More alkyl groups on the –OH carbon → weaker acid. Alcohols are weaker acids than water.
(iii) Acidity of phenols. In phenol the –OH sits on an sp² carbon, which is more electronegative and withdraws electron density from O; resonance also places a positive charge on O (phenol resonance). Both make the O–H bond more polar, so phenol ionises more than an alcohol. Even more important is the stability of the anion: in an alkoxide ion the negative charge is localised on O, but in the phenoxide ion it is delocalised over O and the ortho and para carbons (structures I–V, tap them). Phenol’s own resonance structures involve charge separation, so phenol is less stable than phenoxide — ionisation is favoured. That is why phenol reacts with aqueous NaOH: phenols are stronger acids than alcohols and water.(iii) (iii) Phenols ki acidity. Phenol mein –OH ek sp² carbon par hai, jo zyada electronegative hai aur O se electron density kheenchta hai; resonance bhi O par positive charge lata hai (phenol ka resonance). Dono se O–H bond zyada polar hota hai, isliye phenol alcohol se zyada ionise hota hai. Isse bhi zaroori hai anion ki stability: alkoxide ion mein negative charge O par localised hai, par phenoxide ion mein delocalised — O aur ortho, para carbons par (structures I–V, tap kijiye). Phenol ki apni resonance structures mein charge separation hai, isliye phenol phenoxide se kam stable hai — ionisation favoured hai. Isiliye phenol aqueous NaOH se react karta hai: phenols, alcohols aur paani se strong acids hain.Phenoxide spreads its negative charge over the ring, so phenol gives up H⁺ easily.

With acid chlorides a base (pyridine) is added to neutralise the HCl formed, which shifts the equilibrium to the right. Strong oxidising agents such as acidified KMnO₄ give the acid directly; CrO₃ in anhydrous medium stops at the aldehyde, and pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) — a complex of CrO₃ with pyridine and HCl — is a better reagent for aldehydes (CH₃–CH=CH–CH₂OH → CH₃–CH=CH–CHO). Secondary alcohols give ketones with chromic anhydride (CrO₃). Tertiary alcohols do not undergo oxidation; with strong agents (KMnO₄) at high temperature, C–C bonds break and a mixture of acids with fewer carbon atoms forms (see the oxidation map).4. 4. 1. Methanol (CH₃OH), also called “wood spirit”, was once made by destructive distillation of wood. Today most methanol is made by catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide at high pressure and temperature over a ZnO–Cr₂O₃ catalyst. It is a colourless liquid, b.p. 337 K, and highly poisonous: small quantities can cause blindness and large quantities death. It is used as a solvent in paints and varnishes and chiefly for making formaldehyde.1. 1. Yeh paints aur varnishes mein solvent ki tarah aur mainly formaldehyde banane mein use hota hai.Methanol: from CO + H₂; poisonous; b.p. 337 K.
2. Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) is made commercially by fermentation — the oldest method — of sugars in molasses, sugarcane or fruits such as grapes. The enzyme invertase converts sucrose to glucose and fructose (both C₆H₁₂O₆), which the enzyme zymase (from yeast) converts to ethanol and CO₂. Fermentation takes place anaerobically (without air); CO₂ is released. Zymase stops working once the alcohol exceeds 14 percent. If air gets in, oxygen oxidises ethanol to ethanoic acid, spoiling the taste of alcoholic drinks. Ethanol is a colourless liquid, b.p. 351 K, used as a solvent in the paint industry and for making many carbon compounds. Commercial alcohol is made unfit for drinking (denatured) by adding copper sulphate (to give colour) and pyridine (a foul-smelling liquid). Nowadays large quantities are also made by hydration of ethene.2. 2. Hawa aane par oxygen ethanol ko ethanoic acid mein oxidise kar deti hai, jisse drinks ka swaad bigad jata hai. Ethanol rangheen liquid hai, b.p. 351 K, jo paint industry mein solvent aur kai carbon compounds banane mein use hota hai. Commercial alcohol mein copper sulphate (rang ke liye) aur pyridine (badboodar liquid) milakar use peene layak nahi (denatured) banaya jata hai. Aajkal badi matra ethene ke hydration se bhi banti hai.Ethanol: sugar → (invertase) glucose + fructose → (zymase) ethanol + CO₂.

Ethers with secondary or tertiary alkyl groups can also be made, provided they are on the alkoxide. The reaction is an SN2 attack of the alkoxide ion on a primary alkyl halide (see the mechanism). Better results are obtained when the alkyl halide is primary; with secondary and tertiary halides elimination competes, and with a tertiary halide only the alkene forms, because alkoxides are strong bases as well as nucleophiles. The C–O bonds in ethers are polar, so ethers have a net dipole moment. But this weak polarity hardly affects their boiling points, which are comparable to alkanes of similar mass and much lower than alcohols — alcohols have intermolecular hydrogen bonding, ethers do not (an ether has no H on oxygen). The miscibility of ethers with water, on the other hand, resembles alcohols of the same molecular mass, because the ether oxygen can still form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. Ethers mein C–O bonds polar hain, isliye ethers ka net dipole moment hota hai. 1. Cleavage of C–O bond in ethers. Ethers are the least reactive of the functional groups; the C–O bond is cleaved only under drastic conditions with excess hydrogen halides. A dialkyl ether gives two alkyl halide molecules. Alkyl aryl ethers break at the alkyl–oxygen bond because the aryl–oxygen bond is more stable: the products are phenol and an alkyl halide. Order of reactivity of hydrogen halides: HI > HBr > HCl. Cleavage needs concentrated HI or HBr at high temperature.1. 1. Hydrogen halides ki reactivity: HI > HBr > HCl. Cleavage ke liye high temperature par conc. HI ya HBr chahiye.Ether + excess HI → alkyl iodides. Anisole + HI → phenol + CH₃I.
Mechanism. Step 1 — the ether is protonated by the strong acid (HI or HBr), giving an oxonium ion. Step 2 — iodide (a good nucleophile) attacks the least substituted carbon of the oxonium ion and displaces an alcohol by an SN2 reaction; so with primary or secondary alkyl groups it is the lower alkyl group that forms the alkyl iodide (CH₃–O–C₂H₅ + HI → CH₃I + C₂H₅OH). Step 3 — with excess HI at high temperature, the alcohol formed also reacts to give a second alkyl iodide. When one group is tertiary, the halide formed is the tertiary halide: (CH₃)₃C–O–CH₃ + HI → CH₃OH + (CH₃)₃C–I, because the departure of CH₃OH gives a stable 3° carbocation and the reaction follows SN1 (tap the mechanism). Mechanism. Step 3 — high temperature par excess HI se bana alcohol bhi doosra alkyl iodide deta hai. (See all four reactions.)2. 2. Electrophilic substitution. Alkoxy group (–OR) ortho, para directing hai aur phenol ke –OH ki tarah aromatic ring ko electrophilic substitution ke liye activate karta hai (iske O ka lone pair ring mein delocalise hota hai). (chaaron reactions dekhiye.)–OCH₃ is o/p directing and activating; para product is major.
