Parts and what they mean
- –CHO group (aldehyde) (–CHO समूह (ऐल्डिहाइड)) — In common names the CHO carbon itself gets NO Greek letter.
- α-carbon — directly linked to the –CHO group (α-कार्बन — –CHO समूह से सीधे जुड़ा) — Its H atoms are the acidic α-hydrogens.
- β-carbon — next to α (β-कार्बन — α के बाद वाला) — In IUPAC numbering this is C-3 (the CHO carbon is C-1).
- γ-carbon (γ-कार्बन) — Third carbon away from the CHO group.
- δ-carbon (δ-कार्बन) — Fourth carbon away — this chain is valeraldehyde (pentanal).
- Carbonyl group of the ketone (कीटोन का कार्बोनिल समूह) — Greek letters start on BOTH sides of it: α, α′, then β, β′.
- α-carbon of a ketone (कीटोन का α-कार्बन) — Carbon directly bonded to the C=O carbon on one side.
- α′-carbon (α′-कार्बन) — The α-carbon on the other side of C=O.
- β-carbon (β-कार्बन) — Next carbon after α.
- β′-carbon (β′-कार्बन) — Next carbon after α′.
