Introduction

Oersted and Ampère showed that a current makes a magnetic field — it deflects a compass needle. So the natural question was the opposite one: can a magnet make a current? Around 1830, Michael Faraday (England) and Joseph Henry (USA) showed that the answer is yes: a current is induced in a closed coil whenever the magnetic field through it changes. Producing current by a changing magnetic field is called electromagnetic induction (EMI). Oersted aur Ampère ne dikhaya ki current magnetic field banata hai — wo compass needle ko ghuma deta hai. To natural sawaal ulta tha: kya magnet current bana sakta hai? Lagbhag 1830 mein Michael Faraday (England) aur Joseph Henry (USA) ne dikhaya ki haan: jab bhi kisi closed coil se guzarta magnetic field badalta hai, usmein current induce hota hai. Badalte magnetic field se current paida karna electromagnetic induction (EMI) kehlata hai.

When Faraday first showed that moving a magnet near a wire loop gives a small current, someone asked, “What is the use of it?” He replied, “What is the use of a new-born baby?” That baby grew up into the generators in every power station and the transformers on every street — almost all the electricity you use today comes from electromagnetic induction. Unhone jawab diya, “Naye paida hue bachche ka kya use hai?” Wahi bachcha bada hokar har power station ke generators aur har gali ke transformers bana — aaj aap jo bhi bijli use karte hain, lagbhag saari electromagnetic induction se aati hai.

Experiment 6.1 — a magnet and a coilप्रयोग 6.1 — चुंबक और कुंडलीExperiment 6.1 — magnet aur coil

A coil is connected to a centre-zero galvanometer G. Push the N-pole of a bar magnet towards the coil: the needle deflects. Hold the magnet still: no deflection. Pull it away: the needle deflects the opposite way. With the S-pole facing the coil, every deflection is reversed. Move faster → bigger deflection. Keep the magnet fixed and move the coil instead → the same effects. So it is the relative motion of magnet and coil that induces the current. Look at the figure and then try it yourself in the lab below. Ek coil centre-zero galvanometer G se judi hai. Bar magnet ka N-pole coil ki taraf dhakeliye: needle ghoomti hai. Magnet sthir rakhiye: koi deflection nahi. Use door kheenchiye: needle ulti taraf ghoomti hai. S-pole coil ki taraf ho to har deflection ulat jaata hai. Tez motion → zyada deflection. Magnet fixed rakh kar coil hilaiye → wahi effect. Isliye magnet aur coil ki relative motion hi current induce karti hai. Figure dekhiye, phir neeche ke lab mein khud karke dekhiye.

Experiment 6.2 — do coils

Replace the magnet by a second coil C2 joined to a battery. Its steady current makes a steady magnetic field, so C2 behaves like a bar magnet. Move C2 towards C1 → G deflects; move it away → G deflects the other way; hold it still → nothing. Moving C1 instead of C2 gives the same effects: again relative motion of the coils matters (figure). Iska steady current steady magnetic field banata hai, isliye C2 bar magnet jaisa behave karti hai.

Experiment 6.3 — no motion at allप्रयोग 6.3 — बिल्कुल गति नहींExperiment 6.3 — bilkul motion nahi

Now both coils are held still. C1 is joined to G; C2 is joined to a battery through a tapping key K. Press K → G gives a momentary kick and returns to zero. Keep K pressed → no deflection. Release K → a momentary kick in the opposite direction. Put an iron rod along the axis of the coils → the deflection increases dramatically. So relative motion is not essential: what matters is that the magnetic field through C1 changes (figure). Ab dono coils sthir hain. C1, G se judi hai; C2 ek tapping key K ke through battery se judi hai. K dabaiye → G momentary jhatka deta hai aur zero par laut aata hai. K dabaa kar rakhiye → koi deflection nahi. K chhodiye → opposite direction mein momentary jhatka. Coils ke axis par iron rod rakhiye → deflection bahut badh jaata hai. Isliye relative motion zaroori nahi: important ye hai ki C1 se guzarta magnetic field badle (figure).

Rememberयाद रखेंYaad rakhiye

The common point of all three experiments: a current is induced in a coil only while the magnetic field through it is changing — by moving a magnet, moving a coil, or switching a current. A field that is strong but steady induces nothing. Teeno experiments ki common baat: coil mein current sirf tab induce hota hai jab usse guzarta magnetic field badal raha ho — magnet hilaakar, coil hilaakar, ya current on/off karke. Strong lekin steady field kuch induce nahi karta.

6.3Magnetic Fluxचुंबकीय फ्लक्सMagnetic Flux

To state Faraday’s law we need one quantity: magnetic flux ΦB, defined just like electric flux in Chapter 1. For a plane area A in a uniform field B, where θ is the angle between B and the area vector A (normal to the surface):फैराडे का नियम लिखने के लिए एक राशि चाहिए: चुंबकीय फ्लक्स ΦB, जो अध्याय 1 के वैद्युत फ्लक्स की तरह परिभाषित है। एकसमान क्षेत्र B में समतल क्षेत्रफल A के लिए, जहाँ θ, B और क्षेत्रफल सदिश A (पृष्ठ के अभिलंब) के बीच कोण है:Faraday’s law likhne ke liye ek quantity chahiye: magnetic flux ΦB, jo Chapter 1 ke electric flux ki tarah define hota hai. Uniform field B mein plane area A ke liye, jahan θ, B aur area vector A (surface ke normal) ke beech angle hai:

ΦB = B · A = BA cos θ
SI unit: weber (Wb) = T m². Flux is a scalar.SI मात्रक: वेबर (Wb) = T m²। SI unit: weber (Wb) = T m². Flux scalar hai.

If the field is different at different parts of a surface, split the surface into small elements dAi and add: ΦB = B1·dA1 + B2·dA2 + … = Σ Bi·dAi. The flux can therefore be changed in three ways: change B, change the area A, or change the angle θ. = Σ Bi·dAi। Agar surface ke alag hisson par field alag ho, to surface ko chhote elements dAi mein baant kar jodiye: ΦB = B1·dA1 + B2·dA2 + … = Σ Bi·dAi. Isliye flux teen tarah badla ja sakta hai: B badaliye, area A badaliye, ya angle θ badaliye.

Common mistakeआम गलतीCommon galti

θ is the angle between B and the normal to the surface, not between B and the surface itself. A loop lying flat along the field lines (θ = 90°) has zero flux, however strong B is.θ, B θ, B aur surface ke normal ke beech ka angle hai, B aur surface ke beech ka nahi. Field lines ke along pade loop (θ = 90°) ka flux zero hai, chahe B kitna bhi strong ho.

Faraday’s Law of Induction

Faraday’s insight: in every experiment the magnetic flux through the coil changes, and this change induces an emf. In Experiments 6.1 and 6.2 moving the magnet or coil C2 changes the flux through C1. In Experiment 6.3, pressing the key makes the current in C2 — and its field — rise from zero in a short time, so the flux through C1 increases; while the key is held, the current is constant and so is the flux, hence no emf; on release the flux falls, giving an emf of the opposite sign. Experiment 6.3 mein key dabaane par C2 ka current — aur uska field — kam time mein zero se badhta hai, isliye C1 ka flux badhta hai; key dabi rehne par current aur flux steady, isliye emf nahi; chhodne par flux ghatta hai, jisse opposite sign ka emf milta hai.

Faraday’s law: the magnitude of the induced emf in a circuit is equal to the time rate of change of magnetic flux through the circuit. Faraday’s law: kisi circuit mein induced emf ka magnitude, circuit se guzarte magnetic flux ke change ki rate ke barabar hota hai.

ε = − dΦBdt   and for N turns   ε = − N dΦBdt
The minus sign gives the direction (Lenz’s law, next section). More turns → more emf, because each closely wound turn has the same flux change. Minus sign direction batata hai (Lenz’s law, agla section). Zyada turns → zyada emf, kyunki closely wound har turn mein same flux change hota hai.

Since ΦB = BA cos θ, you can induce an emf by changing B (Experiments 6.1, 6.2, 6.3), by shrinking or stretching a coil in a field (changing A), or by rotating a coil so that θ changes — the idea behind the AC generator (Section 6.8). Kyunki ΦB = BA cos θ, aap emf induce kar sakte hain B badal kar (Experiment 6.1, 6.2, 6.3), field mein coil ko sikod kar ya phaila kar (A badal kar), ya coil ko ghuma kar taaki θ badle — yahi AC generator ka idea hai (Section 6.8).

The loop’s plane is east-west, so its area vector points north (or south). B points north-east, so θ = 45°. Initial flux Φ = BA cos θ = 0.10 × (0.10)² × cos 45° = 10⁻³/√2 Wb ≈ 7.07 × 10⁻⁴ Wb. Final flux = 0. Plane ⟂ B means the area vector is along B: θ = 0°. Initial flux = BA cos 0° = 3.0 × 10⁻⁵ × (π × 10⁻²) = 3π × 10⁻⁷ Wb. After 180°: θ = 180°, flux = −3π × 10⁻⁷ Wb. So |ΔΦ| = 6π × 10⁻⁷ Wb (it changes sign — do not take it as zero!). ।Plane ⟂ B ka matlab area vector B ke along: θ = 0°. 6.5Lenz’s Law and Conservation of Energyलेंज़ का नियम और ऊर्जा संरक्षणLenz’s Law aur Energy Conservation

In 1834 the German physicist Heinrich Lenz gave a short rule for the direction of the induced emf. Lenz’s law: the polarity of the induced emf is such that it tends to produce a current which opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. The minus sign in ε = −dΦ/dt expresses exactly this.1834 में जर्मन भौतिकविद हाइनरिख़ लेंज़ ने प्रेरित emf की दिशा का छोटा नियम दिया। 1834 mein German physicist Heinrich Lenz ne induced emf ki direction ka chhota rule diya. Lenz’s law: induced emf ki polarity aisi hoti hai ki wo aisa current banane ki koshish kare jo us magnetic flux change ka virodh kare jisne use paida kiya. ε = −dΦ/dt ka minus sign theek yahi batata hai.

Apply it to Experiment 6.1. As the N-pole approaches, the flux through the coil increases. The induced current must oppose this increase, so it flows anticlockwise as seen from the magnet’s side — the face of the coil towards the magnet becomes an N-pole, and it repels the approaching magnet. When the N-pole is withdrawn, the flux decreases; the current flows clockwise (seen from the magnet), the near face becomes an S-pole and attracts the receding magnet. Either way the coil opposes the motion (see the induced pole). Ise Experiment 6.1 par lagaiye. N-pole paas aane par coil ka flux badhta hai. Induced current ko is badhat ka virodh karna hai, isliye wo magnet ki taraf se dekhne par anticlockwise behta hai — coil ka magnet wala face N-pole ban jaata hai aur paas aate magnet ko repel karta hai. N-pole door le jaane par flux ghatta hai; current clockwise (magnet ki taraf se) behta hai, near face S-pole banta hai aur door jaate magnet ko attract karta hai. Dono mein coil motion ka virodh karti hai (induced pole dekhiye).

If the loop is open (not a closed circuit), no current flows, but an emf is still induced across its open ends, and Lenz’s law still gives its polarity — as if the current would have flowed. Agar loop khula ho (closed circuit nahi), to current nahi behta, lekin uske khule ends ke beech emf phir bhi induce hota hai, aur Lenz’s law uski polarity batata hai — maano current behta.

Why Lenz’s law must be true: energyलेंज़ का नियम सही क्यों होना चाहिए: ऊर्जाLenz’s law sahi kyun hona chahiye: energy

Suppose the current flowed the other way: an S-pole would face the approaching N-pole and attract it. A gentle push would make the magnet speed up by itself, its kinetic energy growing without any energy being spent — a perpetual-motion machine. That violates conservation of energy, so it cannot happen. In the real case the magnet is repelled; you must do work to push it, and that work appears as Joule heat produced by the induced current. Maan lijiye current ulta behta: paas aate N-pole ke saamne S-pole hota aur use attract karta. Halka sa dhakka dene par magnet apne aap tez hota jaata, uski kinetic energy bina koi energy kharch kiye badhti — ek perpetual-motion machine. Ye energy conservation ke khilaaf hai, isliye possible nahi. Asal mein magnet repel hota hai; use dhakelne ke liye aapko work karna padta hai, aur wahi work induced current se bani Joule heat banta hai.

Lenz’s law opposes the change in flux, not the field itself. When flux is decreasing, the induced current flows so as to support the original field (try to keep the flux). “Opposes the field” is a common wrong answer. Lenz’s law flux ke change ka virodh karta hai, field ka nahi. Flux ghatne par induced current aise behta hai ki original field ka saath de (flux bachaye). “Field ka virodh karta hai” ek common galat answer hai.

(a) No. However strong the magnets are, a current is induced only by a change of magnetic flux, and here nothing changes.(a) नहीं। (a) Nahi. Magnets kitne bhi strong hon, current sirf magnetic flux ke change se induce hota hai, aur yahan kuch nahi badalta.

(b) No current in either case: a current cannot be induced by changing the electric flux (Faraday’s law is about magnetic flux).(b) (b) Dono mein koi current nahi: electric flux badalne se current induce nahi hota (Faraday’s law magnetic flux ke baare mein hai).

(c) Only the rectangular loop: the length of its edge at the boundary stays the same, so its area in the field falls at a steady rate. For the circular loop the chord at the boundary keeps changing, so the rate of change of area — and the emf — varies (see the graph after this example, computed from the chord length).(c) (c) Sirf rectangular loop mein: boundary par uske edge ki length same rehti hai, isliye field mein uska area steady rate se ghatta hai. (d) Our drawing of this situation: you look at the loop from behind the magnet while the N-pole moves towards the loop. The flux through the loop increases, so the face towards the magnet must become N: the induced current is anticlockwise as you see it. So far the field changed. Now keep the field uniform and constant and move a conductor. In the figure, the U-shaped conductor SR with two rails is fixed and the rod PQ slides on the rails. The circuit PQRS lies in a uniform field B perpendicular to its plane (into the page). PQ is pulled to the left with constant speed v (no friction). With RS = l and RQ = x, the flux through the loop is ΦB = Blx. The same result from the Lorentz force. Every free charge q in the rod moves with the rod at speed v in field B, so it feels a force q(v × B) of magnitude qvB, directed towards Q (for a positive charge) — the same for all charges anywhere in the rod. The work done in moving the charge from P to Q is W = qvBl, and emf is work per unit charge: ε = W/q = Blv. Lorentz force se bhi yahi result. Rod ka har free charge q, rod ke saath field B mein speed v se chalta hai, isliye us par force q(v × B) lagta hai jiska magnitude qvB hai aur direction Q ki taraf (positive charge ke liye) — rod mein kahin bhi har charge ke liye same. Charge ko P se Q tak le jaane mein work W = qvBl, aur emf per unit charge work hai: ε = W/q = Blv.

But what if the conductor is stationary and the field changes (Experiments 6.1–6.3)? Then v = 0 and the force on a charge is F = q(E + v × B) = qE, so the only possible cause is an electric field. We conclude that a time-varying magnetic field produces an electric field. (This induced electric field has different properties from the field of static charges.) Just as moving charges exert forces on a magnet, a changing magnetic field exerts force on stationary charges — electricity and magnetism are deeply related. Lekin agar conductor sthir ho aur field badle (Experiment 6.1–6.3)? Method I. As the rod turns, the Lorentz force pushes free electrons towards the outer end; they spread over the ring until the separated charge stops further flow (steady state). A small piece dr at distance r moves at v = ωr, so dε = Bv dr = Bωr dr. Method I. Rod ghoomne par Lorentz force free electrons ko outer end ki taraf dhakelta hai; wo ring par phail jaate hain jab tak alag hua charge aage flow na rok de (steady state). Doori r par chhota piece dr speed v = ωr se chalta hai, isliye dε = Bv dr = Bωr dr. Poori rod par jodne par: ε = ∫₀R Bωr dr = ½BωR² = ½ × 1 × (2π × 50) × 1² = 157 V.

Method II. Join O to a point P on the ring through a resistor, making a closed loop OPQ. 6.7Inductanceप्रेरकत्वInductance

A current can be induced in a coil by a changing current in a neighbouring coil, or by a changing current in the same coil. In both cases the flux through the coil is proportional to the current (ΦB ∝ I), so if the geometry does not change, dΦB/dt ∝ dI/dt. For a closely wound coil of N turns the same flux links every turn; the flux linkage NΦB ∝ I. The constant of proportionality is called inductance. Kisi coil mein current padosi coil ke badalte current se, ya usi coil ke badalte current se induce ho sakta hai. Dono mein coil ka flux current ke proportional hai (ΦB ∝ I), isliye geometry na badle to dΦB/dt ∝ dI/dt. N turns ki closely wound coil mein har turn se wahi flux judta hai; flux linkage NΦB ∝ I. Proportionality constant ko inductance kehte hain.

Inductance depends only on the geometry of the coil(s) and the material inside — just as capacitance depends on plate area, separation and dielectric constant. It is a scalar, with dimensions [M L² T⁻² A⁻²] (flux ÷ current). Its SI unit is the henry (H), named after Joseph Henry, who discovered electromagnetic induction in the USA independently of Faraday. Inductance sirf coil(s) ki geometry aur andar ke material par depend karta hai — jaise capacitance plate area, doori aur dielectric constant par. Take two long co-axial solenoids of the same length l (figure): inner S₁ with radius r₁ and n₁ turns per unit length, outer S₂ with r₂ and n₂ (total turns N₁ = n₁l, N₂ = n₂l). A current I₂ in S₂ makes a uniform field μ₀n₂I₂ inside it, so the flux linkage with S₁ is N₁Φ₁ = (n₁l)(πr₁²)(μ₀n₂I₂). Writing N₁Φ₁ = M₁₂I₂ gives the mutual inductance of S₁ with respect to S₂:समान लंबाई l की दो लंबी समाक्षीय परिनालिकाएँ लें (चित्र): आंतरिक S₁, त्रिज्या r₁ और प्रति एकांक लंबाई n₁ फेरे; बाहरी S₂, r₂ और n₂ (कुल फेरे N₁ = n₁l, N₂ = n₂l)। S₂ में धारा I₂ उसके अंदर μ₀n₂I₂ का एकसमान क्षेत्र बनाती है, इसलिए S₁ से फ्लक्स बंधन N₁Φ₁ = (n₁l)(πr₁²)(μ₀n₂I₂)। Same length l ki do lambi coaxial solenoids lijiye (figure): inner S₁, radius r₁ aur per unit length n₁ turns; outer S₂, r₂ aur n₂ (total turns N₁ = n₁l, N₂ = n₂l). Reverse case: a current I₁ in S₁ makes field μ₀n₁I₁, confined inside S₁ (long solenoid). So the flux linkage with S₂ is N₂Φ₂ = (n₂l)(πr₁²)(μ₀n₁I₁) = M₂₁I₁, giving M₂₁ = μ₀n₁n₂πr₁²l. Hence M₁₂ = M₂₁ = M. This equality is true in general, and it is very useful: if a short solenoid sits deep inside a long one, M₁₂ is easy to find (the inner one sits in a uniform field) while M₂₁ would be very hard — but they are equal. N₂Φ₂ = (n₂l)(πr₁²)(μ₀n₁I₁) = M₂₁I₁, जिससे M₂₁ = μ₀n₁n₂πr₁²l। Ulti situation: S₁ mein current I₁ field μ₀n₁I₁ banata hai, jo S₁ ke andar hi rehta hai (lambi solenoid). Isliye S₂ se flux linkage N₂Φ₂ = (n₂l)(πr₁²)(μ₀n₁I₁) = M₂₁I₁, jisse M₂₁ = μ₀n₁n₂πr₁²l. Isliye M₁₂ = M₂₁ = M. Ye equality general roop se sach aur bahut useful hai: agar chhoti solenoid lambi ke bahut andar ho, to M₁₂ nikaalna aasaan hai (andar wali uniform field mein hai) lekin M₂₁ bahut mushkil — phir bhi dono barabar hain.

Let current I₂ flow in the outer coil. The field at its centre is B₂ = μ₀I₂/2r₂. Since the inner coil is very small, B₂ is nearly constant over its area, so Φ₁ = πr₁²B₂ = (μ₀πr₁²/2r₂) I₂ = M₁₂I₂. 6.7.2Self-inductanceस्वप्रेरकत्वSelf-inductance

An emf can be induced in a single isolated coil when its own current changes, because that changes its own flux. This is self-induction. The flux linkage is proportional to the current: NΦB = LI, where L is the self-inductance (coefficient of self-induction). तब:Kisi single isolated coil mein emf tab induce ho sakta hai jab uska apna current badle, kyunki isse uska apna flux badalta hai. Ye self-induction hai. Flux linkage current ke proportional hai: NΦB = LI, jahan L self-inductance (coefficient of self-induction) hai. Tab:

ε = − d(NΦB)dt = − L dIdt
The self-induced emf always opposes any change — increase or decrease — of the current. It is called the back emf. Self-induced emf hamesha current ke kisi bhi change — badhne ya ghatne — ka virodh karta hai. Long solenoid: cross-section A, length l, n turns per unit length. With current I, B = μ₀nI (edge effects neglected), and the total flux linkage is NΦB = (nl)(μ₀nI)(A) = μ₀n²AlI. So L = μ₀n²Al. Self-inductance acts like inertia — it is the electromagnetic analogue of mass. To build up a current, work must be done against the back emf, and this work is stored as magnetic energy. The rate of doing work is dW/dt = |ε|I = LI (dI/dt) (ignoring resistance). So W = ∫₀I LI dI, i.e. the energy needed to build up a current I is:स्वप्रेरकत्व जड़त्व की तरह कार्य करता है — यह द्रव्यमान का वैद्युतचुंबकीय अनुरूप है। कार्य की दर dW/dt = |ε|I = LI (dI/dt) (प्रतिरोध नगण्य)। अतः W = ∫₀I LI dI, अर्थात् धारा I स्थापित करने के लिए आवश्यक ऊर्जा:Self-inductance inertia ki tarah kaam karta hai — ye mass ka electromagnetic analogue hai. The most important use of electromagnetic induction is producing alternating current (ac). A modern generator can deliver hundreds of megawatts; the inventor Nikola Tesla is credited with developing the machine. A real 3D generator: coil (armature), N and S poles, axle, slip rings, brushes and a bulb that glows with |ε|. Rotate it, zoom, and tap any part to see its name and job. Asli 3D generator: coil (armature), N aur S poles, axle, slip rings, brushes aur |ε| ke saath chamakta bulb. Ise ghumaiye, zoom kijiye aur kisi bhi part par tap karke uska naam aur kaam dekhiye.

In power stations the armature is turned by falling water from dams (hydro-electric generators) or by high-pressure steam made using coal (thermal generators) or nuclear fuel (nuclear power generators). Modern generators give up to about 500 MW — enough to light 5 million 100 W bulbs. In most large generators the coils are held stationary and the electromagnets are rotated. The frequency of rotation is 50 Hz in India (60 Hz in some countries such as the USA). Modern generators lagbhag 500 MW tak dete hain — 100 W ke 50 lakh bulb jalaane layak. Zyadatar bade generators mein coils sthir rehti hain aur electromagnets ghumaye jaate hain. Rotation frequency India mein 50 Hz hai (USA jaise kuch deshon mein 60 Hz).

Points to ponder (for toppers): (1) Electricity and magnetism are intimately related: a moving magnet (or changing B) exerts force on stationary charges, just as moving charges exert force on magnets. (2) The induced electric field of a changing B is not conservative — its work round a closed loop is the emf, not zero. (3) Lenz’s law is a consequence of energy conservation. (4) Motional emf needs the conductor to cut across field lines; a rod moving along B gets no emf. Points to ponder (toppers ke liye): (1) Electricity aur magnetism gehraai se jude hain: moving magnet (ya badalta B) sthir charges par force lagata hai, jaise moving charges magnets par. (2) Badalte B ka induced electric field conservative nahi hai — closed loop par iska work emf hai, zero nahi. (3) Lenz’s law energy conservation ka result hai. (4) Motional emf ke liye conductor ko field lines kaatni padti hain; B ke along chalti rod mein emf nahi.
