Start here — the 30-second ideaEvery redox reaction is a transfer of electrons. If we keep the giver (oxidation) and the taker (reduction) in two separate beakers and join them with a wire, the electrons must travel through the wire — and an electron current through a wire IS electricity. That is a galvanic (voltaic) cell — your torch battery. Run it backwards by pushing electrons with an outside source and you get an electrolytic cell — the way sodium, chlorine and aluminium are made. This chapter teaches: how big the push is (E°, Nernst equation), how it links to Gibbs energy and K, how well solutions conduct (κ, Λm, Kohlrausch), how much product a current gives (Faraday), and real-life cells, batteries, fuel cells and rust. Yahan se shuru kijiye — 30 second ka ideaHar redox reaction electrons ka transfer hai. Agar dene wale (oxidation) aur lene wale (reduction) ko do alag beakers mein rakhkar wire se jod dein, to electrons ko wire se hokar jaana padega — aur wire mein electron current hi bijli hai. Yahi galvanic (voltaic) cell hai — aapki torch ki battery. Bahar ke source se electrons dhakel kar ise ulta chalaiye to electrolytic cell milta hai — isi tarah sodium, chlorine aur aluminium bante hain. Is chapter mein: push kitna bada hai (E°, Nernst equation), Gibbs energy aur K se rishta, solutions kitna achha conduct karte hain (κ, Λm, Kohlrausch), current se kitna product banta hai (Faraday), aur asli cells, batteries, fuel cells aur jung.

What is electrochemistry?

Electrochemistry is the study of the production of electricity from the energy released during spontaneous chemical reactions, and the use of electrical energy to bring about non-spontaneous chemical changes. Many metals, sodium hydroxide, chlorine and fluorine are produced electrochemically; batteries and fuel cells turn chemical energy into electrical energy; and electrochemical methods are often more energy-efficient and less polluting. Even the transmission of signals between our brain and the body has an electrochemical origin. Electrochemistry spontaneous chemical reactions mein nikli energy se bijli banane, aur electrical energy se non-spontaneous chemical changes karane ki study hai. Kai metals, NaOH, chlorine aur fluorine electrochemical methods se bante hain; batteries aur fuel cells chemical energy ko electrical energy mein badalte hain; aur ye methods aksar kam energy lete hain aur kam pollution karte hain. Brain aur body ke beech signals ka transmission bhi electrochemical hai.

In the Daniell cell, a zinc rod dips in ZnSO₄ solution and a copper rod in CuSO₄ solution; the two solutions are joined by a salt bridge. The redox reaction Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s) supplies electrical energy, and the cell shows a potential of 1.1 V when [Zn²⁺] = [Cu²⁺] = 1 mol dm⁻³. Such a device is a galvanic (voltaic) cell. Daniell cell mein zinc rod ZnSO₄ solution mein aur copper rod CuSO₄ solution mein dubi hoti hai; dono solutions salt bridge se jude hote hain. Now apply an external voltage Eext that opposes the cell. (a) While Eext < 1.1 V the cell still works normally: electrons flow from Zn to Cu, zinc dissolves and copper deposits. (b) At Eext = 1.1 V the reaction stops and no current flows. (c) When Eext > 1.1 V the reaction runs in the opposite direction: electrons flow from Cu to Zn, zinc deposits and copper dissolves. The device now works as an electrolytic cell — it uses electrical energy to carry out a non-spontaneous reaction. Ab cell ke opposite ek external voltage Eext lagaiye. 2.2Galvanic Cellsगैल्वेनी सेलGalvanic cells

A galvanic (voltaic) cell converts the Gibbs energy of a spontaneous redox reaction into electrical work (to run a motor, heater, fan …). The Daniell cell reaction is the sum of two half reactions: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu(s) (reduction half reaction) and Zn(s) → Zn²⁺ + 2e⁻ (oxidation half reaction). They occur in two separate portions called half-cells or redox couples — the copper electrode is the reduction half-cell, the zinc electrode the oxidation half-cell. galvanic (voltaic) cell spontaneous redox reaction ki Gibbs energy ko electrical work mein badalta hai (motor, heater, fan chalane mein). Daniell cell reaction do half reactions ka sum hai: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu(s) (reduction half reaction) aur Zn(s) → Zn²⁺ + 2e⁻ (oxidation half reaction). Ye do alag hisson mein hoti hain jinhe half-cells ya redox couples kehte hain — copper electrode reduction half-cell, zinc electrode oxidation half-cell.

Each half-cell is a metal electrode dipped in an electrolyte. Outside, the two electrodes are joined by a metal wire through a voltmeter and a switch; inside, the electrolytes are joined by a salt bridge (if both electrodes dip in the same solution, no salt bridge is needed). At every electrode–solution interface, metal ions tend to deposit on the metal (making it positive) while metal atoms tend to go into solution as ions, leaving electrons behind (making it negative). At equilibrium a charge separation exists, and the potential difference between electrode and electrolyte is the electrode potential. When all species of the half-cell are at unit concentration it is the standard electrode potential (E°); by IUPAC convention, standard reduction potentials are now simply called standard electrode potentials. Har half-cell kisi electrolyte mein duba metal electrode hai. Bahar dono electrodes voltmeter aur switch se hokar wire se judte hain; andar electrolytes salt bridge se judte hain (dono electrodes ek hi solution mein hon to salt bridge nahi chahiye). Har electrode–solution surface par metal ions metal par jamna chahte hain (use positive banate hue) aur metal atoms ion bankar solution mein jaana chahte hain, electrons peeche chhodkar (use negative banate hue). Equilibrium par charge separation hota hai, aur electrode–electrolyte ke beech ka potential difference electrode potential hai. Jab half-cell ki saari species unit concentration par hon to yeh standard electrode potential (E°) hai; IUPAC convention mein standard reduction potential ko hi ab standard electrode potential kehte hain.

In a galvanic cell the half-cell where oxidation takes place is the anode — it has a negative potential with respect to the solution. The half-cell where reduction takes place is the cathode — it has a positive potential. When the switch is on, electrons flow from the negative electrode to the positive electrode, and current flows the opposite way. The potential difference between the two electrodes is the cell potential (in volts); it is the difference between the electrode (reduction) potentials of cathode and anode, and it is called the emf (cell potential) of the cell when no current is drawn. Galvanic cell mein jis half-cell mein oxidation hota hai woh anode hai — solution ke respect mein iska potential negative hota hai. Jis half-cell mein reduction hota hai woh cathode hai — iska potential positive. Switch on karte hi electrons negative se positive electrode ki taraf, aur current ulti taraf. Dono electrodes ke beech ka potential difference cell potential (volt mein) hai; yeh cathode aur anode ke reduction potentials ka difference hai, aur jab current na liya jaaye to ise cell ka emf (cell potential) kehte hain.

Electrode potential ka measurement

The potential of a single half-cell cannot be measured; only the difference between two half-cells (the emf) can. So one electrode is chosen as the reference and given zero potential: the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE), written Pt(s) | H₂(g) | H⁺(aq), for the reaction H⁺(aq) + e⁻ → ½H₂(g). It is a platinum electrode coated with platinum black, dipped in an acidic solution with pure hydrogen gas bubbling through it; the concentration of both forms of hydrogen is kept at unity — H₂ at 1 bar and H⁺ at 1 M. Its potential is taken as zero at all temperatures. Akele half-cell ka potential measure nahi ho sakta; sirf do half-cells ka difference (emf) measure hota hai. Isliye ek electrode ko reference maankar zero potential diya gaya: standard hydrogen electrode (SHE), Pt(s) | H₂(g) | H⁺(aq), reaction H⁺(aq) + e⁻ → ½H₂(g). Yeh platinum black coated platinum electrode hai, acidic solution mein duba, jismein pure hydrogen gas bubble hoti hai; hydrogen ke dono forms ki concentration unity — H₂ 1 bar aur H⁺ 1 M. Har temperature par iska potential zero maana jaata hai.

To measure an unknown half-cell, build a cell with the SHE as the anode (left) and the other half-cell as the cathode (right): E°cell = E°R − E°L = E°R − 0 = E°R. The cell Pt(s) | H₂(g, 1 bar) | H⁺(aq, 1 M) || Cu²⁺(aq, 1 M) | Cu has emf 0.34 V, so E°(Cu²⁺/Cu) = +0.34 V. The cell Pt(s) | H₂(g, 1 bar) | H⁺(aq, 1 M) || Zn²⁺(aq, 1 M) | Zn has emf −0.76 V, so E°(Zn²⁺/Zn) = −0.76 V.अज्ञात अर्ध-सेल मापने के लिए SHE को ऐनोड (बाएँ) और दूसरे अर्ध-सेल को कैथोड (दाएँ) रखकर सेल बनाइए: E°cell = E°R − E°L = E°R − 0 = E°R। सेल Pt(s) | H₂(g, 1 bar) | H⁺(aq, 1 M) || Cu²⁺(aq, 1 M) | Cu का emf 0.34 V है, अतः E°(Cu²⁺/Cu) = +0.34 V। सेल Pt(s) | H₂(g, 1 bar) | H⁺(aq, 1 M) || Zn²⁺(aq, 1 M) | Zn का emf −0.76 V है, अतः E°(Zn²⁺/Zn) = −0.76 V।Unknown half-cell measure karne ke liye SHE ko anode (left) aur doosre half-cell ko cathode (right) rakhkar cell banaiye: E°cell = E°R − E°L = E°R − 0 = E°R. Cell Pt(s) | H₂(g, 1 bar) | H⁺(aq, 1 M) || Cu²⁺(aq, 1 M) | Cu ka emf 0.34 V hai, to E°(Cu²⁺/Cu) = +0.34 V. Cell Pt(s) | H₂(g, 1 bar) | H⁺(aq, 1 M) || Zn²⁺(aq, 1 M) | Zn ka emf −0.76 V hai, to E°(Zn²⁺/Zn) = −0.76 V.

What the sign means. Positive E° (copper): Cu²⁺ ions are reduced more easily than H⁺; H⁺ cannot oxidise Cu, so copper does not dissolve in HCl (in nitric acid it is oxidised by the nitrate ion, not by H⁺). Negative E° (zinc): H⁺ ions can oxidise zinc — zinc reduces H⁺ and dissolves in dilute acid giving H₂. For the Daniell cell: E°cell = E°R − E°L = 0.34 V − (−0.76 V) = 1.10 V.चिह्न का अर्थ। Sign ka matlab. Positive E° (copper): Cu²⁺ ions H⁺ se zyada aasani se reduce hote hain; H⁺ copper ko oxidise nahi kar sakta, isliye copper HCl mein nahi ghulta (nitric acid mein nitrate ion se oxidise hota hai, H⁺ se nahi). Negative E° (zinc): H⁺ ions zinc ko oxidise kar sakte hain — zinc dilute acid mein H₂ dete hue ghulta hai. Daniell cell ke liye: E°cell = 0.34 V − (−0.76 V) = 1.10 V.

Inert electrodes. Sometimes platinum or gold is used as an inert electrode: it does not take part in the reaction but provides a surface for oxidation or reduction and conducts electrons. Examples: hydrogen electrode Pt(s) | H₂(g) | H⁺(aq), half-cell reaction H⁺(aq) + e⁻ → ½H₂(g); bromine electrode Pt(s) | Br₂(aq) | Br⁻(aq), half-cell reaction ½Br₂(aq) + e⁻ → Br⁻(aq). Inert electrodes. Kabhi-kabhi platinum ya gold inert electrode ki tarah lete hain: yeh reaction mein hissa nahi leta, sirf oxidation/reduction ke liye surface deta hai aur electrons conduct karta hai. Example: hydrogen electrode Pt(s) | H₂(g) | H⁺(aq), reaction H⁺(aq) + e⁻ → ½H₂(g); bromine electrode Pt(s) | Br₂(aq) | Br⁻(aq), reaction ½Br₂(aq) + e⁻ → Br⁻(aq).

Reading Table 2.1. If E° > 0, the reduced form is more stable than hydrogen gas; if E° < 0, hydrogen gas is more stable than the reduced form. Fluorine has the highest E° (+2.87 V): F₂ has the maximum tendency to be reduced, so F₂ is the strongest oxidising agent and F⁻ the weakest reducing agent. Lithium has the lowest E° (−3.05 V): Li⁺ is the weakest oxidising agent and Li metal the most powerful reducing agent in aqueous solution. So far all concentrations were unity. When they are not, the electrode potential changes. Nernst showed that for the electrode reaction Mⁿ⁺(aq) + ne⁻ → M(s), the electrode potential at any concentration, measured against the SHE, is E(Mⁿ⁺/M) = E°(Mⁿ⁺/M) − (RT/nF) ln ([M]/[Mⁿ⁺]). The concentration of solid M is taken as unity, so E(Mⁿ⁺/M) = E°(Mⁿ⁺/M) − (RT/nF) ln (1/[Mⁿ⁺]). Here R = 8.314 J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹, F = 96487 C mol⁻¹ (Faraday constant), T in kelvin. Ab tak saari concentrations unity thi. For the Daniell cell, write Nernst for both electrodes and subtract (cathode − anode): Ecell = E°cell − (RT/2F) ln ([Zn²⁺]/[Cu²⁺]). 2.3.2Electrochemical Cell and Gibbs Energy of the Reactionविद्युत-रासायनिक सेल और अभिक्रिया की गिब्ज़ ऊर्जाCell aur reaction ki Gibbs energy

Electrical work = potential × charge passed. For maximum work the charge must pass reversibly, and the reversible work done by a galvanic cell equals the decrease in its Gibbs energy. If the emf is E and nF is the charge passed, then ΔrG = −nFEcell. Ecell is an intensive property but ΔrG is extensive — it depends on n. For Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s), ΔrG = −2FEcell; for 2Zn(s) + 2Cu²⁺(aq) → 2Zn²⁺(aq) + 2Cu(s), ΔrG = −4FEcell. Resistance R (unit ohm, Ω = kg m² s⁻³ A⁻²) is measured with a Wheatstone bridge. R is directly proportional to length l and inversely proportional to area of cross-section A: R = ρ l/A. The constant ρ (rho) is the resistivity (IUPAC prefers this to “specific resistance”) — the resistance of a piece 1 m long with 1 m² cross-section. Unit Ω m; 1 Ω m = 100 Ω cm. R लंबाई l के अनुक्रमानुपाती और अनुप्रस्थ काट क्षेत्रफल A के व्युत्क्रमानुपाती है: R = ρ l/A। Resistance R (unit ohm, Ω = kg m² s⁻³ A⁻²) Wheatstone bridge se naapa jaata hai. Constant ρ (rho) resistivity hai (IUPAC ise “specific resistance” se better maanta hai) — 1 m lambe, 1 m² area wale piece ka resistance. Unit Ω m; 1 Ω m = 100 Ω cm.

The inverse of resistance is conductance, G = 1/R = A/(ρl) = κ A/l, unit siemens (S = Ω⁻¹, also called mho). The inverse of resistivity is the conductivity (κ) (IUPAC prefers this to “specific conductance”), κ (kappa), unit S m⁻¹, often S cm⁻¹; 1 S cm⁻¹ = 100 S m⁻¹. The conductivity of a material is its conductance when it is 1 m long with 1 m² cross-section. G = 1/R = A/(ρl) = κ A/l, Resistance ka ulta conductance hai, G = 1/R = A/(ρl) = κ A/l, unit siemens (S = Ω⁻¹, mho bhi kehte hain). Conductivity varies enormously with the nature of the material, and also with temperature and pressure. Conductors: metals and alloys (very large κ); some non-metals like carbon-black, graphite and some organic polymers also conduct electronically. Insulators: glass, ceramics (very low κ). Semiconductors: silicon, doped silicon, gallium arsenide (in between) — important electronic materials. Superconductors have zero resistivity (infinite conductivity); earlier only metals and alloys at 0–15 K were known, but now some ceramics and mixed oxides are superconducting at temperatures as high as 150 K.चालकता पदार्थ की प्रकृति के साथ बहुत बदलती है, और ताप व दाब पर भी निर्भर है। Conductivity material ki nature ke saath bahut badalti hai, aur temperature-pressure par bhi depend karti hai. Semiconductors: silicon, doped silicon, gallium arsenide (beech mein) — important electronic materials. Superconductors ki resistivity zero (conductivity infinite); pehle sirf 0–15 K par metals/alloys known the, ab kuch ceramics aur mixed oxides 150 K tak superconducting hain.

Electronically conducting polymers (NCERT box)In 1977 MacDiarmid, Heeger and Shirakawa found that acetylene can be polymerised to polyacetylene, which on exposure to iodine vapour acquires metallic lustre and conductivity. Polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene followed. Made of C, H (sometimes N, O, S), they are much lighter than metals — good for light-weight batteries — and flexible, so transistors that bend like a plastic sheet are possible. Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2000. Electronically conducting polymers (NCERT box)1977 mein MacDiarmid, Heeger aur Shirakawa ne paaya ki acetylene polymerise hokar polyacetylene banati hai, jo iodine vapour ke contact mein metallic chamak aur conductivity paa leti hai. Conduction through metals is metallic or electronic conductance, due to the movement of electrons. It depends on (i) the nature and structure of the metal, (ii) the number of valence electrons per atom, (iii) temperature — it decreases as temperature rises. Electrons enter at one end and leave at the other, so the metal’s composition does not change. Yeh depend karta hai (i) metal ki nature aur structure, (ii) per atom valence electrons ki sankhya, (iii) temperature par — temperature badhne par yeh ghatta hai. Electrons ek sire se ghuskar doosre se nikalte hain, isliye metal ka composition nahi badalta.

Even very pure water contains a little H⁺ and OH⁻ (~10⁻⁷ M), giving it a very low conductivity (3.5 × 10⁻⁵ S m⁻¹). Dissolved electrolytes furnish their own ions and raise the conductivity. Conduction by ions in solution is electrolytic or ionic conductance. It depends on: (i) the nature of the electrolyte, (ii) the size of the ions and their solvation, (iii) the nature of the solvent and its viscosity, (iv) the concentration of the electrolyte, (v) temperature — it increases as temperature rises. Passing DC through an ionic solution for long changes its composition by electrochemical reactions. Bahut pure paani mein bhi thode H⁺ aur OH⁻ (~10⁻⁷ M) hote hain, isliye uski conductivity bahut kam (3.5 × 10⁻⁵ S m⁻¹) hai. Ghule electrolytes apne ions dekar conductivity badhate hain. Solution mein ions dwara conduction electrolytic ya ionic conductance hai. A Wheatstone bridge measures an unknown resistance, but a solution brings two problems: (1) DC changes the composition of the solution — solved by using an AC source; (2) a solution cannot be clamped to the bridge like a wire — solved by a specially designed vessel, the conductivity cell. It has two platinum electrodes coated with platinum black (finely divided Pt deposited electrochemically), of cross-section area A, a distance l apart. The solution between them is a column of length l and area A, so R = ρ l/A = l/(κA). R = ρ l/A = l/(κA)।Wheatstone bridge unknown resistance naapta hai, par solution ke saath do problems hain: (1) DC solution ka composition badal deta hai — hal: AC source; (2) solution ko wire ki tarah bridge se nahi jod sakte — hal: special vessel, conductivity cell. l/A is the cell constant (G*), G* (dimension length⁻¹). Measuring l and A directly is inconvenient and unreliable, so G* is found by measuring the resistance of the cell filled with a solution of known conductivity — usually KCl (Table 2.3): G* = l/A = R κ. The resistance is measured with the bridge of Fig 2.5: resistances R₃ and R₄, a variable resistance R₁ and the cell (unknown R₂), fed by an oscillator O (AC of audio frequency, 550 to 5000 cycles per second), with a detector P (headphone or electronic device). At balance (no current through P): R₂ = R₁R₄/R₃. Today, inexpensive conductivity meters read conductance or resistance directly. Then κ = G*/R.l/A l/A cell constant (G*), G* hai (dimension length⁻¹). l aur A ko seedhe naapna inconvenient aur unreliable hai, isliye known conductivity wale solution — aksar KCl (Table 2.3) — se bhare cell ka resistance naapkar G* nikaalte hain: G* = l/A = R κ. Resistance Fig 2.5 ke bridge se naapte hain: resistances R₃ aur R₄, variable resistance R₁ aur cell (unknown R₂), oscillator O (audio frequency AC, 550 se 5000 cycles per second) se, aur detector P (headphone ya electronic device). Balance par (P mein current zero): R₂ = R₁R₄/R₃. Aajkal saste conductivity meters seedhe conductance ya resistance padhte hain. Phir κ = G*/R.

Conductivities of different electrolytes differ because of the charge and size of their ions, the concentration of ions and how easily the ions move under a potential gradient. So a more meaningful quantity is defined — the molar conductivity (Λm), Λm = κ/c. With κ in S m⁻¹ and c in mol m⁻³, Λm is in S m² mol⁻¹. Since 1 mol m⁻³ = 1000 (L/m³) × molarity (mol L⁻¹): Λm (S m² mol⁻¹) = κ (S m⁻¹) ÷ [1000 L m⁻³ × molarity (mol L⁻¹)]. With κ in S cm⁻¹: Λm (S cm² mol⁻¹) = κ (S cm⁻¹) × 1000 (cm³/L) ÷ molarity (mol/L). 1 S m² mol⁻¹ = 10⁴ S cm² mol⁻¹. 1 S m² mol⁻¹ = 10⁴ S cm² mol⁻¹।Alag electrolytes ki conductivity unke ions ke charge aur size, ions ki concentration aur potential gradient mein ions kitni aasani se chalte hain — in sab se alag hoti hai. Isliye zyada meaningful quantity define ki gayi — molar conductivity (Λm), Λm = κ/c. κ S m⁻¹ aur c mol m⁻³ mein ho to Λm ka unit S m² mol⁻¹. Kyunki 1 mol m⁻³ = 1000 (L/m³) × molarity (mol L⁻¹). κ S cm⁻¹ mein ho to: Λm (S cm² mol⁻¹) = κ (S cm⁻¹) × 1000 (cm³/L) ÷ molarity (mol/L). 1 S m² mol⁻¹ = 10⁴ S cm² mol⁻¹.

2.4.2Variation of Conductivity and Molar Conductivity with Concentrationसांद्रता के साथ चालकता और मोलर चालकता में परिवर्तनConcentration ke saath κ aur Λm ka badalna

Conductivity always decreases on dilution, for both weak and strong electrolytes, because the number of ions per unit volume that carry the current decreases. (κ is the conductance of a unit volume of solution between electrodes of unit area kept unit distance apart: G = κA/l = κ when A and l are both 1.) Dilution par conductivity hamesha ghatti hai, strong aur weak dono electrolytes mein, kyunki per unit volume current le jaane wale ions kam ho jaate hain. (κ unit area ke, unit doori par rakhe electrodes ke beech unit volume solution ka conductance hai: A aur l dono 1 hon to G = κA/l = κ.)

Molar conductivity increases on dilution. Λm is the conductance of the volume V of solution that contains one mole of electrolyte, kept between electrodes a unit distance apart with area large enough to hold it: with l = 1 and A = V, Λm = κV. On dilution V (the volume holding 1 mol) increases, and this more than compensates for the fall in κ. When concentration approaches zero, Λm is called the limiting molar conductivity, Λ°m. Λm varies differently for strong and weak electrolytes (Fig 2.6). Dilution par molar conductivity badhti hai. Λm us volume V ka conductance hai jismein ek mole electrolyte ho, unit doori par rakhe aur itne bade area wale electrodes ke beech ki woh volume sama jaaye: l = 1 aur A = V se Λm = κV. Dilution par V (1 mol wala volume) badhta hai, aur yeh κ ki kami se zyada bharpaai kar deta hai. Concentration zero ki taraf jaane par Λm ko limiting molar conductivity Λ°m kehte hain. Strong aur weak electrolytes mein Λm alag tarah badalti hai (Fig 2.6).

Weak electrolytes such as acetic acid have a low degree of dissociation at higher concentrations. On dilution, the degree of dissociation increases, and with it the number of ions in the volume containing 1 mol — so Λm rises steeply on dilution, especially at low concentrations (Fig 2.6). Therefore Λ°m cannot be found by extrapolating to zero concentration: at infinite dilution the electrolyte is fully dissociated (α = 1), but there κ is too low to measure accurately. Λ°m of a weak electrolyte is obtained from Kohlrausch’s law (Example 2.8). Weak electrolytes jaise acetic acid ka zyada concentration par dissociation kam hota hai. Electrolytic cells aur electrolysis

In an electrolytic cell an external voltage drives a chemical reaction. The simplest one: two copper strips in aqueous CuSO₄ with a DC voltage applied. At the cathode (negatively charged) Cu²⁺ ions are discharged: Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Cu(s), and copper is deposited. At the anode copper dissolves: Cu(s) → Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻. This is the basis of the electrolytic refining of copper: impure copper is made the anode, it dissolves as current passes, and pure copper deposits on the cathode. electrolytic cell mein external voltage chemical reaction karata hai. Electrolysis ke quantitative aspects — Faraday ke laws

Michael Faraday first described the quantitative side of electrolysis and published his two laws in 1833–34. First law: the amount of chemical reaction at any electrode during electrolysis is proportional to the quantity of electricity passed through the electrolyte (solution or melt). Second law: the amounts of different substances liberated by the same quantity of electricity are proportional to their chemical equivalent weights (atomic mass of metal ÷ number of electrons needed to reduce the cation). Michael Faraday ne sabse pehle electrolysis ka quantitative side bataya aur 1833–34 mein do laws publish kiye. First law: electrolysis mein kisi electrode par hone wali chemical reaction ki matra electrolyte (solution ya melt) se guzri electricity ki matra ke proportional hoti hai. Faraday used a coulometer (a standard electrolytic cell) to find the charge from the mass of silver or copper deposited; today we have constant-current sources and Q = I t (Q in coulombs, I in amperes, t in seconds). The charge needed depends on the stoichiometry of the electrode reaction. For Ag⁺(aq) + e⁻ → Ag(s), one mole of electrons reduces one mole of Ag⁺. Charge on one electron = 1.6021 × 10⁻¹⁹ C, so the charge on one mole of electrons = NA × 1.6021 × 10⁻¹⁹ C = 6.02 × 10²³ mol⁻¹ × 1.6021 × 10⁻¹⁹ C = 96487 C mol⁻¹ — one faraday (F), F (≈ 96500 C mol⁻¹ for approximate work). For Mg²⁺(l) + 2e⁻ → Mg(s) one mole needs 2F; for Al³⁺(l) + 3e⁻ → Al(s) one mole needs 3F. In commercial production of metals currents as high as 50,000 A are used — about 0.518 F per second. Faraday ne jama hui silver ya copper ke mass se charge jaanne ke liye coulometer (standard electrolytic cell) use kiya; aaj constant current sources hain aur Q = I t (Q coulomb, I ampere, t second). Kitna charge chahiye yeh electrode reaction ki stoichiometry par depend karta hai. Ag⁺(aq) + e⁻ → Ag(s) mein ek mole electrons ek mole Ag⁺ ko reduce karta hai. Ek electron ka charge = 1.6021 × 10⁻¹⁹ C, to ek mole electrons ka charge = 6.02 × 10²³ × 1.6021 × 10⁻¹⁹ C = 96487 C mol⁻¹ — ek faraday (F), F (approx ≈ 96500). Mg²⁺(l) + 2e⁻ → Mg(s) mein ek mole ke liye 2F; Al³⁺(l) + 3e⁻ → Al(s) mein 3F. Metals ke commercial production mein 50,000 A tak current — lagbhag 0.518 F per second.

Q = I × t ; 1 F = NA × e = 96487 C mol⁻¹ ≈ 96500 C mol⁻¹ ; mass deposited = (M × I × t) ÷ (n × F)

Electrolysis ke products

The products depend on the nature of the material being electrolysed and the type of electrodes. An inert electrode (Pt or gold) does not take part in the reaction — it is only a source or sink of electrons; a reactive electrode takes part. The products also depend on the oxidising and reducing species present and their electrode potentials. Some processes, though feasible, are kinetically so slow that an extra potential — the overpotential — must be applied, which makes them more difficult. Products electrolyse hone wale material ki nature aur electrodes ke type par depend karte hain. Inert electrode (Pt ya gold) reaction mein hissa nahi leta — sirf electrons ka source ya sink hai; reactive electrode hissa leta hai. Products maujood oxidising/reducing species aur unke electrode potentials par bhi depend karte hain. Kuch processes possible hote hue bhi kinetically itne slow hain ki extra potential — overpotential — lagana padta hai, jisse woh mushkil ho jaate hain.

Cathode: Na⁺ + e⁻ → Na; anode: Cl⁻ → ½Cl₂ + e⁻. Products: sodium metal aur chlorine gas.

Aqueous NaCl: besides Na⁺ and Cl⁻ we also have H⁺, OH⁻ and H₂O. At the cathode the competition is Na⁺(aq) + e⁻ → Na(s), E° = −2.71 V versus H⁺(aq) + e⁻ → ½H₂(g), E° = 0.00 V. The reaction with the higher E° wins, so H₂ forms; since H⁺ comes from H₂O → H⁺ + OH⁻, the net cathode reaction is H₂O(l) + e⁻ → ½H₂(g) + OH⁻. At the anode the competition is Cl⁻(aq) → ½Cl₂(g) + e⁻, E° = 1.36 V versus 2H₂O(l) → O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) + 4e⁻, E° = 1.23 V. The reaction with the lower E° should win (water), but because of the overpotential of oxygen, Cl⁻ is oxidised and Cl₂ forms. Net: NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l) → Na⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) + ½H₂(g) + ½Cl₂(g). Rule of thumb for productsCathode (reduction): the species with the higher E° is reduced — in water, metals whose E° is higher than hydrogen’s (Cu, Ag) deposit, while Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺ stay and H₂ forms. Anode (oxidation): the species with the lower E° is oxidised — but a reactive anode (Cu, Ag) dissolves itself, and Cl⁻ beats water because of oxygen overpotential. Molten salts: no water to compete. Products ka simple ruleCathode (reduction): zyada E° wali species reduce hoti hai — paani mein, hydrogen se zyada E° wali metals (Cu, Ag) jamti hain, jabki Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺ reh jaate hain aur H₂ banti hai. 2.6BatteriesबैटरियाँBatteries

Any battery (one cell, or several cells in series) used as a source of electrical energy is basically a galvanic cell. To be practical it should be reasonably light, compact, and its voltage should not vary appreciably during use. There are two main types: primary and secondary. Bijli ke source ki tarah use hone wali koi bhi battery (ek cell, ya series mein kai cells) basically galvanic cell hai. Practical hone ke liye yeh kaafi halki, compact ho aur use mein iska voltage zyada na badle. Do main types: primary aur secondary.

2.6.1Primary Batteriesप्राथमिक बैटरियाँPrimary batteries

In a primary battery the reaction occurs only once; after use the battery becomes dead and cannot be reused. The most familiar example is the dry cell (Leclanché cell) used in transistors and clocks: a zinc container acts as the anode; the cathode is a carbon (graphite) rod surrounded by powdered MnO₂ and carbon; the space between the electrodes is filled with a moist paste of NH₄Cl and ZnCl₂. Approximate electrode reactions — anode: Zn(s) → Zn²⁺ + 2e⁻; cathode: MnO₂ + NH₄⁺ + e⁻ → MnO(OH) + NH₃. Manganese is reduced from +4 to +3. The NH₃ formed complexes Zn²⁺ as [Zn(NH₃)₄]²⁺. Primary battery mein reaction sirf ek baar hota hai; use ke baad battery dead ho jaati hai aur dobara kaam nahi aati. Why is the mercury cell’s voltage constant?Use Nernst: E = E° − (0.059/n) log Q. In Zn(Hg) + HgO(s) → ZnO(s) + Hg(l) every species is a solid or a liquid, so Q = 1 and E = E° throughout. In the dry cell, ion concentrations change, so its voltage slowly falls. Mercury cell ka voltage constant kyun?Nernst: E = E° − (0.059/n) log Q. 2.6.2Secondary Batteriesद्वितीयक बैटरियाँSecondary batteries

A secondary cell can be recharged after use by passing current through it in the opposite direction; a good one survives a large number of discharge–charge cycles. The most important is the lead storage battery, used in automobiles and inverters: a lead anode and a grid of lead packed with lead dioxide (PbO₂) as cathode, in 38% sulphuric acid as electrolyte. In use (discharge) — anode: Pb(s) + SO₄²⁻(aq) → PbSO₄(s) + 2e⁻; cathode: PbO₂(s) + SO₄²⁻(aq) + 4H⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → PbSO₄(s) + 2H₂O(l); overall: Pb(s) + PbO₂(s) + 2H₂SO₄(aq) → 2PbSO₄(s) + 2H₂O(l). 2.7Fuel Cellsईंधन सेलFuel cells

Thermal power plants are not very efficient and are a major source of pollution: the heat of combustion of coal, gas or oil first turns water into high-pressure steam, which then runs a turbine. A galvanic cell converts chemical energy directly into electricity and is highly efficient. Cells in which reactants are fed continuously to the electrodes and products removed continuously, designed to convert the energy of combustion of fuels like hydrogen, methane, methanol directly into electrical energy, are fuel cells. Thermal power plants zyada efficient nahi hain aur pollution ka bada source hain: coal, gas ya oil ki combustion heat pehle paani ko high pressure steam banati hai, jo phir turbine chalati hai. Jin cells mein reactants electrodes ko lagaataar diye jaate hain aur products lagaataar hataaye jaate hain, aur jo hydrogen, methane, methanol jaise fuels ki combustion energy ko seedhe electrical energy mein badalte hain, woh fuel cells hain.

The most successful one uses hydrogen + oxygen → water; it powered the Apollo space programme, and the water vapour produced was condensed and added to the astronauts’ drinking water. H₂ and O₂ are bubbled through porous carbon electrodes into concentrated aqueous NaOH; catalysts like finely divided Pt or Pd in the electrodes speed up the electrode reactions. Cathode: O₂(g) + 2H₂O(l) + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻(aq). Anode: 2H₂(g) + 4OH⁻(aq) → 4H₂O(l) + 4e⁻. Overall: 2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l). The cell runs as long as the reactants are supplied. Efficiency ≈ 70% versus ≈ 40% for thermal plants. Fuel cells are pollution free and have been tried in automobiles on an experimental basis. Sabse successful fuel cell hydrogen + oxygen → paani ka hai; isne Apollo space programme ko bijli di, aur bani water vapour ko condense karke astronauts ke peene ke paani mein milaya gaya. 2.8Corrosionसंक्षारणCorrosion

Corrosion slowly coats metal surfaces with oxides or other salts of the metal: rusting of iron, tarnishing of silver, green coating on copper and bronze. It damages buildings, bridges, ships and everything made of metal, especially iron — we lose crores of rupees every year. In corrosion a metal is oxidised by loss of electrons to oxygen, forming oxides. Rusting of iron needs water and air; its chemistry is complex but it is essentially an electrochemical phenomenon. Corrosion metal surfaces ko dheere-dheere metal ke oxides ya doosre salts se dhak deta hai: lohe par jung, chaandi ka kaala padna, copper aur bronze par hari parat. Yeh buildings, bridges, ships aur har metal ki cheez, khaaskar lohe ko nuksaan pahunchata hai — har saal crores rupaye ka nuksaan hota hai. Corrosion mein metal oxygen ko electrons dekar oxidise hoti hai aur oxides bante hain. Lohe ki jung ke liye paani aur hawa dono chahiye; iski chemistry complex hai par basically yeh electrochemical phenomenon hai.

Rusting as a tiny cell. At one spot on the iron, oxidation occurs and that spot acts as the anode: 2Fe(s) → 2Fe²⁺ + 4e⁻, E°(Fe²⁺/Fe) = −0.44 V. The electrons travel through the metal to another spot where they reduce oxygen in the presence of H⁺ (believed to come from H₂CO₃, formed when CO₂ from air dissolves in water, or from other acidic oxides) — this spot is the cathode: O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O(l), E° = 1.23 V. Overall: 2Fe(s) + O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) → 2Fe²⁺(aq) + 2H₂O(l), E°cell = 1.67 V. Fe²⁺ is further oxidised by atmospheric oxygen to Fe³⁺, which comes out as rust, hydrated ferric oxide Fe₂O₃·xH₂O, producing more H⁺: 2Fe²⁺(aq) + 2H₂O(l) + ½O₂(g) → Fe₂O₃(s) + 4H⁺(aq). कुल: 2Fe(s) + O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) → 2Fe²⁺(aq) + 2H₂O(l), E°cell = 1.67 V। Jung — ek chhota cell. Lohe ke kisi spot par oxidation hota hai aur woh spot anode banta hai: 2Fe(s) → 2Fe²⁺ + 4e⁻, E°(Fe²⁺/Fe) = −0.44 V. Electrons metal se hokar doosre spot par jaate hain jahan woh H⁺ ki maujoodgi mein oxygen ko reduce karte hain (H⁺ shayad H₂CO₃ se — hawa ki CO₂ paani mein ghulkar — ya doosre acidic oxides se) — yeh spot cathode hai: O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O(l), E° = 1.23 V. Overall: 2Fe(s) + O₂(g) + 4H⁺(aq) → 2Fe²⁺(aq) + 2H₂O(l), E°cell = 1.67 V. Fe²⁺ atmospheric oxygen se Fe³⁺ banta hai aur rust, hydrated ferric oxide Fe₂O₃·xH₂O ke roop mein nikalta hai, aur H⁺ phir bante hain: 2Fe²⁺(aq) + 2H₂O(l) + ½O₂(g) → Fe₂O₃(s) + 4H⁺(aq).

Prevention saves money and prevents accidents such as a bridge collapse or failure of a key component. (1) Keep the surface from contact with the atmosphere — cover it with paint or some chemicals (e.g. bisphenol). (2) Cover the surface with other metals (Sn, Zn, etc.) that are inert or react to save the object. (3) Electrochemical method: provide a sacrificial electrode of another metal (like Mg, Zn) which corrodes itself but saves the object. Prevention paisa bachata hai aur bridge girne ya kisi key part ke fail hone jaisi accidents rokta hai. (3) Electrochemical method: kisi doosri metal (jaise Mg, Zn) ka sacrificial electrode lagaiye jo khud corrode hokar object ko bachata hai.

Why a sacrificial metal worksMg (E° = −2.36 V) and Zn (−0.76 V) have lower E° than Fe (−0.44 V), so they are oxidised first and become the anode; the iron becomes the cathode and is protected. That is why galvanised (zinc-coated) iron does not rust even when scratched. Sacrificial metal kyun kaam karti haiMg (E° = −2.36 V) aur Zn (−0.76 V) ka E°, Fe (−0.44 V) se kam hai, isliye woh pehle oxidise hokar anode bante hain; loha cathode banke bach jaata hai. Isiliye galvanised (zinc-coated) loha khurach lagne par bhi jung nahi khaata.
NCERT intext 2.15, solvedOn a wet iron surface, one spot (anode) oxidises Fe → Fe²⁺ + 2e⁻; electrons flow through the metal (the “wire”) to another spot (cathode) where O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O; the water film with dissolved CO₂ acts as the electrolyte/salt bridge. The Hydrogen Economy (NCERT box)Today our economy runs mainly on fossil fuels — coal, oil and gas — and energy demand rises as living standards rise (per-capita energy use is a measure of development). CO₂ from burning them causes the greenhouse effect: Earth’s surface warms, polar ice melts and sea levels rise, threatening low-lying coasts and island nations like the Maldives. Hydrogen is an ideal alternative because its combustion gives only water — provided it is produced by splitting water using solar energy, making it renewable and non-polluting. Both making H₂ by electrolysis of water and burning it in a fuel cell are electrochemical technologies. The Hydrogen Economy (NCERT box)Aaj hamari economy mainly fossil fuels — coal, oil, gas — par chalti hai, aur living standard badhne ke saath energy demand badhti hai (per capita energy use development ka measure hai). Inhe jalane se bani CO₂ greenhouse effect paida karti hai: Earth ki surface garam hoti hai, polar ice pighalti hai aur sea level badhta hai, jisse low-lying coasts aur Maldives jaise island nations khatre mein hain. Hydrogen ideal alternative hai kyunki iske combustion se sirf paani banta hai — agar yeh solar energy se paani split karke bane, to renewable aur pollution-free. Paani ke electrolysis se H₂ banana aur fuel cell mein use jalana — dono electrochemical technologies hain.

Mistakes that cost marks• Writing E°cell = E°anode − E°cathode (it is cathode − anode). • Multiplying E° by the coefficients when balancing (never — E° is intensive). • Using molarity in mol L⁻¹ with κ in S m⁻¹ (mix of units — use Λm = 1000κ/M only with S cm⁻¹). • Extrapolating a weak electrolyte’s curve to get Λ°m (use Kohlrausch). • Forgetting to convert minutes/hours to seconds in Q = It. • Calling the anode “+” in a galvanic cell. • Saying Cl₂ forms because E°(Cl₂) is lower — it forms because of the overpotential of O₂. Marks katwane wali galtiyan• E°cell = E°anode − E°cathode likhna (sahi: cathode − anode). • Balance karte waqt E° ko coefficients se multiply karna (kabhi nahi — E° intensive hai). • S m⁻¹ wali κ ke saath mol L⁻¹ molarity lena (Λm = 1000κ/M sirf S cm⁻¹ ke saath). • Weak electrolyte ka curve badhakar Λ°m nikaalna (Kohlrausch lijiye). • Q = It mein minute/ghante ko second mein na badalna. • Galvanic cell mein anode ko “+” kehna. • Yeh kehna ki Cl₂ isliye banti hai kyunki uska E° kam hai — yeh O₂ ke overpotential ki wajah se banti hai.
