Parts and what they mean
- Impure copper — anode (+) (अशुद्ध कॉपर — ऐनोड (+)) — Connected to the positive terminal. Copper dissolves: Cu(s) → Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻.
- Pure copper — cathode (−) (शुद्ध कॉपर — कैथोड (−)) — Connected to the negative terminal. Pure copper deposits: Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Cu(s).
- Copper sulphate electrolyte (कॉपर सल्फ़ेट विद्युत-अपघट्य) — Aqueous CuSO₄ (acidified). Its Cu²⁺ concentration stays nearly constant: Cu enters at the anode and leaves at the cathode.
- Cu²⁺ ions move to the cathode (Cu²⁺ आयन कैथोड की ओर) — Cations migrate towards the negative electrode, where they are reduced.
- Anode mud (ऐनोड पंक) — Less reactive impurities such as silver and gold do not dissolve and fall below the anode.
- DC source (DC स्रोत) — Supplies the electrical energy for this non-spontaneous change (an electrolytic cell). Long plate = +, short plate = −.
