Start here — the 30-second ideaA solution is a mixture that looks the same everywhere (sugar in water, air, brass). The bigger part is the solvent, the smaller part is the solute. This chapter asks three questions: (1) how much solute is there? (concentration), (2) how much CAN dissolve? (solubility), and (3) what changes in the solvent when solute is added? (vapour pressure, boiling point, freezing point, osmosis). The surprise: these changes depend only on HOW MANY solute particles there are — that is how chemists find molar masses. Yahan se shuru kijiye — 30 second ka ideaSolution aisa mixture hai jo har jagah same dikhta hai (paani mein cheeni, hawa, brass). Bada part solvent, chhota part solute. Ye chapter teen sawaal poochta hai: (1) solute kitna hai? (concentration), (2) kitna ghul sakta hai? (solubility), (3) solute dalne par solvent mein kya badalta hai? (vapour pressure, boiling point, freezing point, osmosis). Interesting baat: ye changes sirf solute particles ki GINTI par depend karte hain — isi se molar mass nikalte hain.

Types of Solutions

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components whose composition and properties are uniform throughout. A solution with two components is a binary solution. The component in the largest amount is the solvent; it decides whether the solution is solid, liquid or gas. The others are solutes. solution do ya zyada components ka homogeneous mixture hai jiska composition aur properties poore mein same rehti hain. Do components wala solution binary solution hai. Sabse zyada matra wala component solvent hai; wahi decide karta hai ki solution solid, liquid ya gas hoga. Baaki solutes hain.

Since solute and solvent can each be a solid, liquid or gas, there are nine types of solutions (NCERT Table 1.1). Air-like mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen are gaseous solutions; sugar or salt in water, and oxygen in water, are liquid solutions; copper dissolved in gold and hydrogen in palladium are solid solutions. Solute aur solvent dono solid, liquid ya gas ho sakte hain, isliye nau types ke solutions hote hain (NCERT Table 1.1). Oxygen-nitrogen mixture gaseous solution hai; paani mein cheeni ya namak, aur paani mein oxygen liquid solutions hain; gold mein ghula copper aur palladium mein hydrogen solid solutions hain.

Concentration kaise likhein

“Dilute” and “concentrated” are only words. Chemistry needs numbers, so the concentration of a solution (amount of solute in a given amount of solution or solvent) is expressed in several ways. Learn the definition AND what goes in the denominator — that is where most mistakes happen.“तनु” और “सांद्र” केवल शब्द हैं। “Dilute” aur “concentrated” sirf words hain. Chemistry ko numbers chahiye, isliye solution ki concentration (diye gaye solution ya solvent mein solute ki matra) kai tarah se likhi jaati hai. Definition ke saath ye bhi yaad rakhiye ki denominator mein kya aata hai — galtiyan wahin hoti hain.

(i) Mass percentage (w/w)(i) द्रव्यमान प्रतिशत (w/w)(i) Mass percentage (w/w)

Mass % of a component = (mass of component ÷ total mass of solution) × 100
e.g. 10% glucose in water by mass = 10 g glucose + 90 g water. e.g. mass se 10% glucose = 10 g glucose + 90 g water.

Used widely in industry — e.g. commercial bleaching solution contains 3.62 mass percentage of sodium hypochlorite in water. Industry mein bahut use hota hai — jaise commercial bleaching solution mein paani mein 3.62 mass percentage sodium hypochlorite hota hai.

(ii) Volume percentage (V/V)(ii) आयतन प्रतिशत (V/V)(ii) Volume percentage (V/V)

Volume % of a component = (volume of component ÷ total volume of solution) × 100
10% ethanol = 10 mL ethanol in enough water to make 100 mL of solution.10% एथेनॉल = 10 mL एथेनॉल, कुल विलयन 100 mL।10% ethanol = 10 mL ethanol, total solution 100 mL.

Used for liquid–liquid solutions. A 35% (v/v) solution of ethylene glycol (an antifreeze) is used in car engines; it lowers the freezing point of water to 255.4 K (−17.6 °C). Liquid–liquid solutions ke liye. Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) ka 35% (v/v) solution car engine mein use hota hai; ye paani ka freezing point 255.4 K (−17.6 °C) tak gira deta hai.

(iii) Mass by volume percentage (w/V)(iii) द्रव्यमान-आयतन प्रतिशत (w/V)(iii) Mass by volume percentage (w/V)

Mass of solute (in g) dissolved in 100 mL of solution. Common in medicine and pharmacy — e.g. normal saline is 0.9% (w/V) NaCl.100 mL 100 mL solution mein ghule solute ka mass (g mein). Medicine aur pharmacy mein common — jaise normal saline 0.9% (w/V) NaCl hai.

(iv) Parts per million (ppm)(iv) पार्ट्स प्रति मिलियन (ppm)(iv) Parts per million (ppm)

ppm = (parts of component ÷ total parts of all components) × 10⁶

A litre of sea water (1030 g) holds about 6 × 10⁻³ g of dissolved O₂ = 5.8 ppm. Fluoride: 1 ppm in water prevents tooth decay, 1.5 ppm makes teeth mottled, and high concentrations are poisonous. Pollutants in air and water are also given in ppm. Ek litre sea water (1030 g) mein lagbhag 6 × 10⁻³ g ghuli O₂ = 5.8 ppm. Fluoride: paani mein 1 ppm daanton ki sadan rokta hai, 1.5 ppm se daant mottled (dhabbedar) hote hain, aur high concentration zehreeli hai. Hawa aur paani ke pollutants bhi ppm mein bataye jaate hain.

(v) Mole fraction (x)(v) मोल-अंश (x)(v) Mole fraction (x)

xA = nA ÷ (nA + nB + …) and xA + xB + … = 1
No unit. Very useful for gas mixtures and for vapour pressure (Raoult’s and Henry’s laws). Koi unit nahi. Gas mixtures aur vapour pressure (Raoult aur Henry ke laws) mein bahut useful.
NCERT Example 1.1 — mole fraction from mass %Calculate the mole fraction of ethylene glycol (C₂H₆O₂) in a solution containing 20% of C₂H₆O₂ by mass. Take 100 g of solution → 20 g glycol + 80 g water. Moles of glycol = 20 ÷ 62 = 0.322 mol; moles of water = 80 ÷ 18 = 4.444 mol. x(glycol) = 0.322 ÷ (0.322 + 4.444) = 0.068; x(water) = 1 − 0.068 = 0.932.NCERT NCERT Example 1.1 — mass % se mole fractionMass se 20% C₂H₆O₂ wale solution mein ethylene glycol ka mole fraction nikaaliye. 100 g solution maan lijiye → 20 g glycol + 80 g water. Glycol ke moles = 20 ÷ 62 = 0.322 mol; water ke moles = 80 ÷ 18 = 4.444 mol. x(glycol) = 0.322 ÷ (0.322 + 4.444) = 0.068; x(water) = 1 − 0.068 = 0.932.

(vi) Molarity (M)(vi) मोलरता (M)(vi) Molarity (M)

Molarity M = moles of solute ÷ volume of solution in litres
Unit mol L⁻¹ (written M). 0.25 M NaOH = 0.25 mol NaOH in 1 L of SOLUTION. Unit mol L⁻¹ (M likhte hain). 0.25 M NaOH = 1 L SOLUTION mein 0.25 mol NaOH.
NCERT Example 1.2 — molarityCalculate the molarity of a solution containing 5 g of NaOH in 450 mL solution. Moles of NaOH = 5 g ÷ 40 g mol⁻¹ = 0.125 mol. NCERT Example 1.2 — molarity450 mL solution mein 5 g NaOH wale solution ki molarity nikaaliye. NaOH ke moles = 5 g ÷ 40 g mol⁻¹ = 0.125 mol. Volume = 450 mL = 0.450 L. Molarity = 0.125 ÷ 0.450 = 0.278 M.

(vii) Molality (m)(vii) मोललता (m)(vii) Molality (m)

Molality m = moles of solute ÷ mass of SOLVENT in kg
Unit mol kg⁻¹. 1.00 mol kg⁻¹ KCl = 1 mol (74.5 g) KCl in 1 kg water.मात्रक mol kg⁻¹। 1.00 mol kg⁻¹ KCl = 1 kg पानी में 1 mol (74.5 g) KCl।Unit mol kg⁻¹. 1.00 mol kg⁻¹ KCl = 1 kg water mein 1 mol (74.5 g) KCl.
NCERT Example 1.3 — molalityCalculate the molality of 2.5 g of ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH) in 75 g of benzene. Molar mass of CH₃COOH = 60 g mol⁻¹ → moles = 2.5 ÷ 60 = 0.0417 mol. Mass of benzene = 75 g = 0.075 kg. NCERT Example 1.3 — molality75 g benzene mein 2.5 g ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH) ki molality nikaaliye. CH₃COOH ka molar mass = 60 g mol⁻¹ → moles = 2.5 ÷ 60 = 0.0417 mol. Benzene = 75 g = 0.075 kg. Molality = 0.0417 ÷ 0.075 = 0.556 mol kg⁻¹.
Molarity vs molality — the classic trapMass %, ppm, mole fraction and molality (m) use only MASSES → they do not change with temperature. Molarity uses the VOLUME of solution, and volume changes with temperature → molarity changes with temperature. Also: molarity divides by litres of solution, molality by kg of solvent. Molarity vs molality — sabse common trapMass %, ppm, mole fraction aur molality (m) sirf MASS se bante hain → temperature se nahi badalte. Molarity mein solution ka VOLUME hai, jo temperature se badalta hai → molarity temperature par depend karti hai. Aur: molarity mein solution ke litre se divide, molality mein solvent ke kg se.

Solubility (ghulnasheelta)

Solubility of a substance is its maximum amount that can be dissolved in a specified amount of solvent at a specified temperature. It depends on the nature of solute and solvent, and on temperature and pressure. Kisi substance ki solubility uski woh maximum matra hai jo fixed temperature par fixed matra ke solvent mein ghul sake. Ye solute-solvent ki nature, temperature aur pressure par depend karti hai.

1.3.1Solubility of a Solid in a Liquidद्रव में ठोस की विलेयताLiquid mein solid ki solubility

“Like dissolves like.” Polar solutes dissolve in polar solvents, non-polar solutes in non-polar solvents — the solute dissolves when the new solute–solvent attractions are similar to the ones broken. So NaCl and sugar dissolve in water but not in benzene, while naphthalene and anthracene dissolve in benzene but not in water.“समान समान को घोलता है।” “Like dissolves like.” Polar solute polar solvent mein, non-polar solute non-polar solvent mein ghulta hai — solute tab ghulta hai jab naye solute–solvent attractions tootne wale attractions jaise hon. Isliye NaCl aur cheeni paani mein ghulte hain, benzene mein nahi; jabki naphthalene aur anthracene benzene mein ghulte hain, paani mein nahi.

In water, each Na⁺ is surrounded by the δ− oxygen ends of water molecules and each Cl⁻ by the δ+ hydrogen ends (ion–dipole attraction). When a solid is added to a solvent, it dissolves (dissolution) and some dissolved particles collide with the solid and come back out of solution (crystallisation). When both happen at the same rate, a dynamic equilibrium is reached: Solute + Solvent ⇌ Solution. Such a solution, which cannot dissolve any more solute at that temperature and pressure, is saturated; one that can dissolve more is unsaturated. The concentration of solute in a saturated solution is its solubility. Solid ko solvent mein dalne par woh ghulta hai (dissolution) aur kuch ghule particles solid se takra kar wapas bahar aate hain (crystallisation). Jab dono same rate par hon, toh dynamic equilibrium banta hai: Solute + Solvent ⇌ Solution. Saturated solution mein solute ki concentration hi uski solubility hai.

Effect of temperature: this is an equilibrium, so Le Chatelier’s principle applies. If dissolution is endothermic (ΔsolH > 0), solubility increases with temperature; if exothermic (ΔsolH < 0), solubility decreases. Effect of pressure: practically none — solids and liquids are almost incompressible. Temperature ka effect: ye equilibrium hai, isliye Le Chatelier principle lagta hai. Agar dissolution endothermic (ΔsolH > 0) hai toh temperature badhne par solubility badhti hai; exothermic (ΔsolH < 0) ho toh ghatti hai. Pressure ka effect: lagbhag nahi — solid aur liquid almost incompressible hain.

1.3.2Solubility of a Gas in a Liquidद्रव में गैस की विलेयताLiquid mein gas ki solubility

Oxygen dissolves only a little in water, yet that dissolved O₂ keeps all aquatic life alive. HCl gas, on the other hand, is highly soluble. Gas solubility rises a lot with pressure and falls with temperature. Oxygen paani mein bahut kam ghulti hai, phir bhi yahi ghuli O₂ saare aquatic life ko zinda rakhti hai. Henry’s law: at constant temperature, the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the liquid. In the form used most: the partial pressure of the gas in the vapour phase (p) is proportional to its mole fraction in the solution (x), p = KH x. A graph of p against x is a straight line through the origin with slope KH (NCERT Fig 1.2). Henry’s law: constant temperature par liquid mein gas ki solubility liquid ke upar gas ke partial pressure ke directly proportional hoti hai. Read the table like a topper: KH of N₂ and O₂ increases from 293 K to 303 K → gas solubility decreases as temperature rises. That is why aquatic species are more comfortable in cold water than in warm water. Dissolving a gas is exothermic, so by Le Chatelier heating pushes gas out. Topper ki tarah padhiye: N₂ aur O₂ ka KH 293 K se 303 K par badhta hai → temperature badhne par gas solubility ghatti hai. Henry’s law in real life (NCERT)• Soft drinks and soda water are sealed under high pressure to increase the solubility of CO₂. • Scuba divers and the bends: deep under water the pressure is high, so more N₂ and O₂ dissolve in blood. On coming up fast, pressure drops, the dissolved gases are released and bubbles of nitrogen form in the blood, blocking capillaries — a painful, dangerous condition called bends. To avoid it, divers’ tanks are filled with air diluted with helium (11.7% helium, 56.2% nitrogen, 32.1% oxygen). • Anoxia: at high altitudes the partial pressure of oxygen is low, so blood and tissues get less O₂ — climbers feel weak and cannot think clearly. Real life mein Henry’s law (NCERT)• Soft drinks aur soda water ko CO₂ ki solubility badhane ke liye high pressure par seal kiya jaata hai. • Scuba divers aur bends: gehrai mein pressure zyada hota hai, isliye blood mein zyada N₂ aur O₂ ghulti hai. Liquid solutions ka vapour pressure

Every liquid in a closed container evaporates until its vapour and liquid are in equilibrium; the pressure of that vapour is its vapour pressure. In a solution, BOTH the components may be volatile (liquid + liquid), or only the solvent may be volatile (a non-volatile solid dissolved in a liquid). Band container mein har liquid tab tak evaporate hota hai jab tak vapour aur liquid equilibrium mein na aa jayein; us vapour ka pressure vapour pressure hai. Raoult’s law: for a solution of volatile liquids, the partial vapour pressure of each component is directly proportional to its mole fraction in the solution. For components 1 and 2: p₁ = p₁⁰ x₁ and p₂ = p₂⁰ x₂, where p⁰ is the vapour pressure of the pure component at the same temperature. Raoult’s law: volatile liquids ke solution mein har component ka partial vapour pressure solution mein uske mole fraction ke directly proportional hota hai. By Dalton’s law of partial pressures, the total pressure is the sum: ptotal = p₁ + p₂ = p₁⁰ x₁ + p₂⁰ x₂. Add a non-volatile solute (glucose, NaCl, urea…) to a solvent. Some of the surface is now occupied by solute particles, so fewer solvent molecules can escape → the vapour pressure of the solution is lower than that of the pure solvent at the same temperature (NCERT Fig 1.4). The lowering depends on the quantity of solute, not on what it is. Solvent mein non-volatile solute (glucose, NaCl, urea…) daaliye. Ideal aur non-ideal solutions

1.5.1Ideal Solutionsआदर्श विलयनIdeal solutions

An ideal solution obeys Raoult’s law over the entire range of concentration. Two more conditions: ΔmixH = 0 (no heat absorbed or released on mixing) and ΔmixV = 0 (volume of solution = sum of the volumes of the components). At the molecular level, the A–B attractions are nearly equal to the A–A and B–B attractions. A perfectly ideal solution is rare; nearly ideal ones: n-hexane + n-heptane, bromoethane + chloroethane, benzene + toluene. आणविक स्तर पर A–B आकर्षण, A–A और B–B आकर्षणों के लगभग बराबर होते हैं। Ideal solution poori concentration range mein Raoult’s law follow karta hai. Molecular level par A–B attractions, A–A aur B–B attractions ke lagbhag barabar hote hain. Perfect ideal solution rare hai; lagbhag ideal: n-hexane + n-heptane, bromoethane + chloroethane, benzene + toluene.

1.5.2Non-ideal Solutionsअनादर्श विलयनNon-ideal solutions

A non-ideal solution does not obey Raoult’s law over the entire range of concentration; its vapour pressure is higher or lower than Raoult’s law predicts. Non-ideal solution poori concentration range mein Raoult’s law follow nahi karta; uska vapour pressure Raoult’s law se zyada ya kam hota hai.

Positive deviation — vapour pressure HIGHER than predicted (NCERT Fig 1.6 (a)). Reason: A–B attractions are weaker than A–A and B–B, so molecules escape more easily. Example: ethanol + acetone — acetone molecules get between ethanol molecules and break some of their hydrogen bonds. Also carbon disulphide + acetone (weaker dipolar solute–solvent interactions). कारण: A–B आकर्षण A–A और B–B से कमज़ोर हैं, इसलिए अणु आसानी से निकलते हैं। Positive deviation — vapour pressure expected se ZYADA (NCERT Fig 1.6 (a)). Reason: A–B attractions A–A aur B–B se kamzor hain, isliye molecules aasani se nikalte hain. Example: ethanol + acetone — acetone molecules ethanol molecules ke beech ghus kar unke kuch hydrogen bonds tod dete hain. Negative deviation — vapour pressure LOWER than predicted (NCERT Fig 1.6 (b)). Reason: A–B attractions are stronger than A–A and B–B. Examples: phenol + aniline (hydrogen bond between the phenolic H and the lone pair on aniline’s N is stronger than the H-bonds between like molecules) and chloroform + acetone — the chloroform molecule forms a hydrogen bond with acetone. कारण: A–B आकर्षण A–A और B–B से प्रबल हैं। Negative deviation — vapour pressure expected se KAM (NCERT Fig 1.6 (b)). Azeotropes. Some liquid mixtures form an azeotrope: a binary mixture with the same composition in liquid and vapour that boils at a constant temperature, so its components cannot be separated by fractional distillation. Large positive deviation → minimum boiling azeotrope (e.g. ethanol–water: fractional distillation stops at about 95% ethanol by volume). Large negative deviation → maximum boiling azeotrope (e.g. nitric acid–water: about 68% HNO₃ and 32% water by mass, boiling point 393.5 K). Azeotropes. 1.6Colligative Properties and Determination of Molar Massअणुसंख्य गुणधर्म और मोलर द्रव्यमान का निर्धारणColligative properties aur molar mass

Adding a non-volatile solute lowers the vapour pressure, and four properties follow from that: (1) relative lowering of vapour pressure, (2) elevation of boiling point, (3) depression of freezing point, (4) osmotic pressure. All four depend only on the number of solute particles relative to the total number of particles, not on their nature — they are colligative properties (Latin: co = together, ligare = to bind). Non-volatile solute milane se vapour pressure ghatta hai, aur isse chaar properties nikalti hain: (1) relative lowering of vapour pressure, (2) elevation of boiling point, (3) depression of freezing point, (4) osmotic pressure. Chaaron sirf total particles ke comparison mein solute particles ki ginti par depend karti hain, unki nature par nahi — ye colligative properties hain (Latin: co = saath, ligare = baandhna).

Relative lowering of vapour pressure

From Raoult’s law, p₁ = x₁ p₁⁰, so the lowering Δp₁ = p₁⁰ − p₁ = x₂ p₁⁰. Dividing by p₁⁰: the relative lowering equals the mole fraction of the solute. For dilute solutions n₂ ≪ n₁, so n₂ can be dropped from the denominator, and writing n = w/M gives a way to find the solute’s molar mass M₂. Raoult’s law se p₁ = x₁ p₁⁰, isliye lowering Δp₁ = p₁⁰ − p₁ = x₂ p₁⁰. p₁⁰ se divide karne par: relative lowering = solute ka mole fraction. Dilute solutions mein n₂ ≪ n₁, isliye denominator se n₂ hata sakte hain, aur n = w/M likh kar solute ka molar mass M₂ nikal sakte hain.

(p₁⁰ − p₁) ÷ p₁⁰ = x₂ = n₂ ÷ (n₁ + n₂) ≈ n₂ ÷ n₁ = (w₂ × M₁) ÷ (M₂ × w₁)

Osmosis aur osmotic pressure

Raw mango shrivels into pickle in brine, wilted flowers revive in fresh water, blood cells burst in pure water. All are osmosis: when a solution and pure solvent are separated by a semipermeable membrane (SPM), solvent molecules flow through the membrane from the pure solvent into the solution (NCERT Fig 1.9). SPMs can be natural (animal or vegetable membranes) or synthetic (e.g. cellophane); they have a network of tiny holes that let small solvent molecules through but hinder bigger solute molecules. Namkeen paani mein kachcha aam sikud kar achaar banta hai, murjhaye phool taaze paani mein khil uthte hain, blood cells pure paani mein phat jaati hain. SPM natural (animal ya vegetable membrane) ya synthetic (jaise cellophane) ho sakti hai; isme bahut chhote holes ka network hota hai jo chhote solvent molecules ko jaane deta hai par bade solute molecules ko rokta hai.

Osmotic pressure (π) is the excess pressure that must be applied to the solution side to just stop osmosis (NCERT Fig 1.10). For dilute solutions it is proportional to the molar concentration C at a given temperature T: π = CRT. Using C = n₂/V gives the molar-mass formula. Osmotic pressure (π) woh extra pressure hai jise solution side par lagane se osmosis theek ruk jaye (NCERT Fig 1.10). Why osmotic pressure is the method for proteins and polymers(1) It is measured at room temperature — biomolecules are generally not stable at higher temperatures. (2) Molarity is used instead of molality. (3) Its magnitude is large even for very dilute solutions, so it can be measured accurately. That is why it is widely used for the molar masses of proteins, polymers and other macromolecules. Proteins aur polymers ke liye osmotic pressure method kyun(1) Ye room temperature par measure hota hai — biomolecules zyada temperature par stable nahi hote. Isiliye proteins, polymers aur doosre macromolecules ke molar mass ke liye ye widely use hota hai.

Isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic. Two solutions with the same osmotic pressure at a given temperature are isotonic — no osmosis occurs between them. The fluid inside blood cells is isotonic with 0.9% (mass/volume) NaCl, called normal saline; that is why it is safe to inject intravenously. In a solution more concentrated than 0.9% (hypertonic) water flows out of the cells and they shrink; in a solution less concentrated than 0.9% (hypotonic) water flows into the cells and they swell (see the three cells). Isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic. Reverse osmosis aur water purification

If a pressure larger than the osmotic pressure is applied on the solution side, the direction reverses: pure solvent flows out of the solution through the SPM. This is reverse osmosis, used for desalination of sea water (NCERT Fig 1.11). The pressure needed is quite high. A workable membrane is a film of cellulose acetate on a suitable support — permeable to water but impermeable to the impurities and ions in sea water. Many countries use desalination plants to meet their drinking-water needs. Abnormal molar masses

Colligative properties count particles. If the solute dissociates into ions or associates into bigger units, the number of particles changes — and the molar mass worked out from the colligative property comes out wrong. Such an experimentally found molar mass, lower or higher than the expected value, is an abnormal molar mass. Colligative properties particles ko ginti hain. Agar solute ions mein dissociate ho ya bade units mein associate ho, toh particles ki ginti badal jaati hai — aur colligative property se nikla molar mass galat aata hai. Expected value se kam ya zyada aisa experimental molar mass abnormal molar mass hai.

Dissociation: 1 mol KCl (74.5 g) in water gives 1 mol K⁺ + 1 mol Cl⁻ = 2 mol particles. In 1 kg water it should raise the boiling point by 2 × 0.52 = 1.04 K. If we did not know about dissociation we would conclude the molar mass is 37.25 g — dissociation makes the experimental molar mass LOWER than the true value. Dissociation: paani mein 1 mol KCl (74.5 g) se 1 mol K⁺ + 1 mol Cl⁻ = 2 mol particles bante hain. 1 kg paani mein ye boiling point 2 × 0.52 = 1.04 K badhayega.

Association: ethanoic acid (acetic acid) molecules dimerise in benzene by hydrogen bonding (2 CH₃COOH ⇌ (CH₃COOH)₂); this normally happens in solvents of low dielectric constant. Fewer particles → if all molecules associate, ΔTb or ΔTf is half the normal value and the molar mass comes out twice the expected value — association makes the experimental molar mass HIGHER. Benzoic acid does the same (see the dimer). Association: ethanoic acid (acetic acid) ke molecules benzene mein hydrogen bonding se dimer banate hain (2 CH₃COOH ⇌ (CH₃COOH)₂); ye normally low dielectric constant wale solvents mein hota hai. Kam particles → agar saare molecules associate hon toh ΔTb ya ΔTf normal ka aadha aur molar mass expected ka double — association se experimental molar mass ZYADA aata hai. Benzoic acid bhi aisa karta hai (dimer dekhiye).

To account for this, van’t Hoff introduced the van’t Hoff factor (i). Dissociation → i > 1 (KCl in water: i close to 2). Association → i < 1 (ethanoic acid in benzene: i nearly 0.5). No change (glucose, urea, sugar in water) → i = 1. वियोजन → i > 1 (पानी में KCl: i लगभग 2)। Iske liye van’t Hoff ne van’t Hoff factor (i) diya. Dissociation → i > 1 (paani mein KCl: i lagbhag 2). Association → i < 1 (benzene mein ethanoic acid: i lagbhag 0.5). Koi change nahi (paani mein glucose, urea, cheeni) → i = 1.

Read Table 1.4: for KCl, NaCl and MgSO₄, i approaches 2 as the solution becomes very dilute; for K₂SO₄ it approaches 3. In more concentrated solutions ions attract each other, so the effective number of particles — and i — is smaller. Table 1.4 padhiye: KCl, NaCl aur MgSO₄ ke liye solution bahut dilute hone par i, 2 ke paas pahunchta hai; K₂SO₄ ke liye 3 ke paas. NCERT Example 1.12 — degree of association2 g of benzoic acid (C₆H₅COOH) dissolved in 25 g of benzene shows a freezing-point depression of 1.62 K. Kf (benzene) = 4.9 K kg mol⁻¹. What is the percentage association if it forms a dimer? M₂ = (1000 × 2 × 4.9) ÷ (25 × 1.62) = 241.98 g mol⁻¹ (experimental). Normal M = 122 g mol⁻¹ → i = 122 ÷ 241.98 = 0.504. Mistakes that cost marks• Using mL of solution for molality (it needs kg of solvent). • Forgetting to convert °C → K in π = CRT, or cm³ → L. • For electrolytes, forgetting i (NaCl ≈ 2, CaCl₂ ≈ 3, K₂SO₄ ≈ 3). • Saying higher KH means more soluble — it is the opposite. • विद्युत-अपघट्यों में i भूलना (NaCl ≈ 2, CaCl₂ ≈ 3, K₂SO₄ ≈ 3)। Marks katwane wali galtiyan• Molality mein solution ke mL lena (solvent ka kg chahiye). • π = CRT mein °C → K ya cm³ → L badalna bhoolna. • Electrolytes mein i bhoolna (NaCl ≈ 2, CaCl₂ ≈ 3, K₂SO₄ ≈ 3). • Zyada KH ko zyada soluble kehna — ulta hai.
