Parts and what they mean
- Anode written on the LEFT (ऐनोड बाईं ओर लिखा जाता है) — The electrode where oxidation happens (negative in a galvanic cell) is always written first.
- Single line | = phase boundary (एकल रेखा | = प्रावस्था सीमा) — Separates the solid electrode from its solution (metal | solution).
- Anode solution (oxidised form) (ऐनोड विलयन (ऑक्सीकृत रूप)) — Its concentration can be written in brackets, e.g. Zn²⁺(aq, 1 M).
- Double line || = salt bridge (दोहरी रेखा || = लवण सेतु) — Joins the two solutions internally and keeps them electrically neutral.
- Cathode solution (कैथोड विलयन) — The ions that get reduced at the cathode.
- Cathode written on the RIGHT (कैथोड दाईं ओर लिखा जाता है) — The electrode where reduction happens (positive in a galvanic cell).
- Electron flow (इलेक्ट्रॉन प्रवाह) — Electrons go from the left electrode to the right electrode through the outer circuit; current flows the other way.
- Oxidation half-cell (ऑक्सीकरण अर्ध-सेल) — Zn(s) → Zn²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻
- Reduction half-cell (अपचयन अर्ध-सेल) — Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Cu(s)
- Cell emf = right − left (सेल emf = दायाँ − बायाँ) — With anode on the left, E°cell = E°(right) − E°(left) comes out positive for a working cell: 0.34 − (−0.76) = 1.10 V.
