Parts and what they mean
- Positive plate (nickel hydroxide) (धन प्लेट (निकेल हाइड्रॉक्साइड)) — Discharge reaction overall: Cd(s) + 2Ni(OH)₃(s) → CdO(s) + 2Ni(OH)₂(s) + H₂O(l). Ni is reduced from +3 to +2.
- Negative plate (cadmium) (ऋण प्लेट (कैडमियम)) — Cadmium is oxidised (0 → +2) to CdO during discharge.
- Separator (पृथक्कारी) — A layer soaked in moist sodium or potassium hydroxide separates the plates (NCERT Fig 2.11).
- Cell case (सेल आवरण) — Ni–Cd cells last longer than lead storage cells but are more expensive to make.
