Parts and what they mean
- (a) Eext < 1.1 V — works as a galvanic cell ((a) Eext < 1.1 V — गैल्वेनी सेल) — Electrons flow from Zn to Cu, so current flows from Cu to Zn. Zinc dissolves at the anode; copper deposits at the cathode.
- (b) Eext = 1.1 V — nothing happens ((b) Eext = 1.1 V — कुछ नहीं होता) — No flow of electrons or current, and no chemical reaction.
- (c) Eext > 1.1 V — works as an electrolytic cell ((c) Eext > 1.1 V — वैद्युत-अपघटनी सेल) — Electrons now flow from Cu to Zn and current from Zn to Cu. Zinc is deposited at the zinc electrode and copper dissolves at the copper electrode — a non-spontaneous reaction driven by electrical energy.
