Parts and what they mean
- Zinc container — anode (जिंक पात्र — ऐनोड) — Anode: Zn(s) → Zn²⁺ + 2e⁻.
- Graphite (carbon) rod — cathode (ग्रेफ़ाइट (कार्बन) छड़ — कैथोड) — Cathode: MnO₂ + NH₄⁺ + e⁻ → MnO(OH) + NH₃. Mn goes from +4 to +3.
- Powdered MnO₂ and carbon (चूर्णित MnO₂ और कार्बन) — Surrounds the graphite rod; MnO₂ is the substance reduced.
- Moist paste of NH₄Cl and ZnCl₂ (NH₄Cl और ZnCl₂ का नम पेस्ट) — The electrolyte. NH₃ formed at the cathode complexes Zn²⁺ as [Zn(NH₃)₄]²⁺. Cell potential ≈ 1.5 V.
- Seal (सील) — Closes the cell.
