Introduction

Electricity and magnetism have been known for over 2000 years, but only in 1820 was it realised that they are deeply linked. During a lecture demonstration, the Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted noticed that a current in a straight wire deflected a nearby compass needle. The needle sets itself tangent to a circle centred on the wire, in a plane perpendicular to the wire. Reverse the current and the needle reverses too. A bigger current or a needle closer to the wire gives a bigger deflection. Iron filings sprinkled around the wire arrange themselves in concentric circles. Current ulat dijiye to needle bhi ulat jaati hai. Zyada current ya wire ke zyada paas needle — zyada deflection. Wire ke chaaron or chhidke iron filings concentric circles mein saj jaate hain.

Oersted’s discovery started a burst of experiments. In 1864 James Maxwell unified the laws of electricity and magnetism and realised that light is an electromagnetic wave. Radio waves were discovered by Hertz and produced by J.C. Bose and G. Marconi by the end of the 19th century. In this chapter you will see how a magnetic field exerts forces on moving charges and on currents, how currents produce magnetic fields, and how a galvanometer detects currents and voltages. Oersted ki khoj ke baad experiments ki baadh aa gayi. 1864 mein James Maxwell ne electricity aur magnetism ke laws ko ek kiya aur samjha ki light ek electromagnetic wave hai. Radio waves Hertz ne khoji aur 19th century ke ant tak J.C. Bose aur G. Marconi ne inhe produce kiya. Is chapter mein aap dekhenge ki magnetic field moving charges aur currents par force kaise lagata hai, currents magnetic field kaise banate hain, aur galvanometer current aur voltage kaise detect karta hai.

Sources aur fields

Recall Chapter 1: a charge Q (the source) creates an electric field E = Q r̂ /(4πε₀ r²); a charge q placed in it feels F = qE. A field is not just a calculating trick — it carries energy and momentum and takes time to spread. In the same way, currents (moving charges) create a magnetic field B(r). Like E, B is a vector field defined at every point, and it obeys superposition: the field of several sources is the vector sum of their separate fields. Chapter 1 yaad kijiye: charge Q (source) electric field E = Q r̂ /(4πε₀ r²) banata hai; usme rakha charge q force F = qE feel karta hai. Field sirf calculation ki trick nahi — ye energy aur momentum le jaata hai aur phailne mein time leta hai. Isi tarah currents (moving charges) magnetic field B(r) banate hain. E ki tarah B bhi har point par defined vector field hai, aur superposition maanta hai: kai sources ka field unke alag-alag fields ka vector sum hai.

Magnetic field, Lorentz force

A point charge q moving with velocity v in an electric field E and a magnetic field B feels a total force — the Lorentz force (given by H.A. Lorentz, based on the experiments of Ampère and others):विद्युत क्षेत्र E और चुंबकीय क्षेत्र B में वेग v से चलते बिंदु आवेश q पर कुल बल — लोरेंज़ बल (एच.ए. लोरेंज़ ने ऐम्पियर आदि के प्रयोगों के आधार पर दिया):Electric field E aur magnetic field B mein velocity v se chalte point charge q par total force — Lorentz force (H.A.

Pick the direction of v and of B and the sign of the charge. Guess where the force points, then reveal it in 3D. Turn the view by dragging.v v aur B ki direction aur charge ka sign chuniye. Andaza lagaiye ki force kidhar hoga, phir 3D mein dekhiye. Drag karke view ghumaiye.

Unit of B: from F = qvB sin θ, B = 1 SI unit when a charge of 1 C moving at 1 m/s perpendicular to B feels a force of 1 N. So [B] = N s C⁻¹ m⁻¹, called the tesla (T) after Nikola Tesla. The tesla is a large unit; a smaller non-SI unit is the gauss (1 G = 10⁻⁴ T). The earth’s magnetic field is about 3.6 × 10⁻⁵ T.B Isliye [B] = N s C⁻¹ m⁻¹, jise Nikola Tesla ke naam par tesla (T) kehte hain. Tesla badi unit hai; chhoti non-SI unit gauss hai (1 G = 10⁻⁴ T). Earth ka magnetic field lagbhag 3.6 × 10⁻⁵ T hai.

Common mistakeआम गलतीCommon galti

Magnetic force does no work. Students often think B “speeds up” a charge. It cannot: q(v × B) is always perpendicular to v, so the work done is zero and the speed (kinetic energy) stays the same — only the direction changes. Only the electric part qE can change the speed. Magnetic force koi work nahi karta. Students aksar sochte hain ki B charge ko “tez” karta hai. Aisa nahi ho sakta: q(v × B) hamesha v ke perpendicular hai, isliye work zero aur speed (kinetic energy) wahi rehti hai — sirf direction badalti hai. Speed sirf electric part qE badal sakta hai.

4.2.3Magnetic force on a current-carrying conductorधारावाही चालक पर चुंबकीय बलCurrent wale conductor par magnetic force

A wire carrying current is full of moving charges, so it must feel a force in B. Take a straight rod of length l and area A with n carriers per unit volume, each of charge q drifting with velocity vd. The total force is (nlA) q vd × B. Since n q vd A = I (Chapter 3),धारा वाला तार गतिमान आवेशों से भरा है, इसलिए B में उस पर बल लगना चाहिए। चूँकि n q vd A = I (अध्याय 3),Current wala wire moving charges se bhara hai, isliye B mein us par force lagna chahiye. Length l, area A ki seedhi rod lijiye jismein per unit volume n carriers hon, har ek charge q aur drift velocity vd. Total force (nlA) q vd × B hai. Kyunki n q vd A = I (Chapter 3),

F = I l × B
Eq. 4.4 — l has length l and points along the current. (I itself is not a vector.) Eq. 4.4 — l ki length l aur direction current ki direction. (I khud vector nahi hai.)

Here B is the external field, not the wire’s own field. For a wire of any shape, add up the forces on small straight pieces: F = Σ I dl × B, which becomes an integral. Yahan B external field hai, wire ka apna field nahi. Kisi bhi shape ke wire ke liye chhote seedhe tukdon par forces jodiye: F = Σ I dl × B, jo integral ban jaata hai.

The magnetic force I l B acts upwards and must balance the weight: m g = I l B. So B = mg/(Il) = (0.2 × 9.8)/(2 × 1.5) = 0.65 T.चुंबकीय बल I l B ऊपर लगता है और भार को संतुलित करता है: m g = I l B। अतः B = mg/(Il) = (0.2 × 9.8)/(2 × 1.5) = 0.65 T।Magnetic force I l B upar lagta hai aur weight ko balance karta hai: m g = I l B. Isliye B = mg/(Il) = (0.2 × 9.8)/(2 × 1.5) = 0.65 T.

4.3Motion in a Magnetic Fieldचुंबकीय क्षेत्र में गतिMagnetic Field mein Motion

A force does work only if it has a component along the motion. The magnetic force is always perpendicular to v, so it does no work and the speed never changes — only the direction of the momentum does. (An electric force qE can have a component along v and can change the energy.) Force tabhi work karta hai jab uska koi component motion ki direction mein ho. Magnetic force hamesha v ke perpendicular hai, isliye ye koi work nahi karta aur speed kabhi nahi badalti — sirf momentum ki direction badalti hai. (Electric force qE ka component v ke along ho sakta hai aur wo energy badal sakta hai.)

Case 1 — v ⊥ B: the sideways force qvB acts as a centripetal force, and the charge moves in a circle in the plane perpendicular to B. Eq. 4.6(a) — independent of the speed (energy)!समी. 4.6(a) — चाल (ऊर्जा) पर निर्भर नहीं!Eq. 4.6(a) — speed (energy) par depend nahi!

Since v = ωr, the angular frequency ω = qB/m does not depend on v. A faster particle moves on a bigger circle but takes exactly the same time for one round. This fact is the key idea behind the cyclotron, a machine that accelerates charged particles. Kyunki v = ωr, angular frequency ω = qB/m v par depend nahi karti. Tez particle bade circle par chalta hai lekin ek chakkar mein bilkul utna hi time leta hai. Yahi fact cyclotron (charged particles ko accelerate karne wali machine) ka main idea hai.

Case 2 — v at an angle to B: split v into v∥ (along B) and v⊥ (across B). v∥ × B = 0, so v∥ stays constant; v⊥ produces a circle of radius m v⊥/qB. Together: a helix. Ampère’s law is not new physics — it says the same thing as the Biot–Savart law. Ampère’s law is to Biot–Savart what Gauss’s law is to Coulomb’s law: both relate a field on a boundary to a source inside. It holds for steady currents. It is true for every loop, but it gives B easily only when there is high symmetry — e.g. it cannot give B = μ₀I/2R at the centre of a single loop. Ampère’s law nayi physics nahi hai — ye wahi kehta hai jo Biot–Savart law. 4.7The SolenoidपरिनालिकाSolenoid

A long solenoid is a long wire wound as a tight helix (length much larger than radius), with insulated (enamelled) turns. Each turn is nearly a circular loop, and the total field is the vector sum of the fields of all the turns. Between neighbouring turns the little circular field lines cancel. Inside, at the mid-point P, the field is strong, uniform and along the axis; outside, at the mid-point Q, it is weak and along the axis. The longer the solenoid, the more it looks like a long cylindrical metal sheet: the field outside → 0 and the field inside is parallel to the axis everywhere. Lamba solenoid ek lamba wire hai jo tight helix mein lipta hai (length radius se bahut zyada), turns insulated (enamelled) hote hain. A current makes a magnetic field, and a magnetic field pushes on a current — so two currents must push or pull on each other. Ampère studied this in 1820–25. Take two long parallel conductors a and b, a distance d apart, carrying currents Ia and Ib. Conductor a produces at b the field Ba = μ₀Ia/2πd. Conductor b feels a sideways force from it, towards a when the currents are parallel:धारा चुंबकीय क्षेत्र बनाती है, और चुंबकीय क्षेत्र धारा पर बल लगाता है — इसलिए दो धाराएँ एक-दूसरे को धकेलेंगी या खींचेंगी। चालक b इससे बगल का बल अनुभव करता है, धाराएँ समांतर हों तो a की ओर:Current magnetic field banata hai, aur magnetic field current par force lagata hai — isliye do currents ek-doosre ko dhakelenge ya kheenchenge. Definition of the ampere (as given in the book): the ampere is that steady current which, when maintained in each of two very long, straight, parallel conductors of negligible cross-section placed 1 m apart in vacuum, produces on each a force of 2 × 10⁻⁷ N per metre of length. (Adopted in 1946.) Check: μ₀(1)(1)/(2π × 1) = 2 × 10⁻⁷ N/m. In practice the earth’s field is removed and a current balance is used. Then 1 C is the charge that flows in 1 s through a cross-section when the current is 1 A.ऐम्पियर की परिभाषा (पुस्तक के अनुसार): ऐम्पियर वह स्थायी धारा है जो निर्वात में 1 m दूर रखे, नगण्य अनुप्रस्थ काट वाले दो बहुत लंबे, सीधे, समांतर चालकों में से प्रत्येक में बनाए रखने पर प्रत्येक पर प्रति मीटर लंबाई 2 × 10⁻⁷ N बल उत्पन्न करे। Ampere ki definition (book ke anusaar): ampere wo steady current hai jo vacuum mein 1 m door rakhe, negligible cross-section wale do bahut lambe, seedhe, parallel conductors mein se har ek mein maintain karne par har ek par per metre length 2 × 10⁻⁷ N force paida kare. Phir 1 C wo charge hai jo 1 A current par 1 s mein cross-section se behta hai.

A rectangular loop carrying a steady current in a uniform B feels no net force but a torque — just like an electric dipole in a uniform E (Section 1.11). First let B lie in the plane of the loop (Fig. 4.18a). Arms BC and DA are parallel to B → no force. Arm AB (length b) feels F₁ = I b B into the page, arm CD feels F₂ = I b B out of the page. Net force zero, but F₁ and F₂ form a couple with arm a:एकसमान B में स्थायी धारा वाला आयताकार पाश कोई नेट बल नहीं पर बल आघूर्ण अनुभव करता है — ठीक एकसमान E में विद्युत द्विध्रुव की तरह (खंड 1.11)। नेट बल शून्य, पर F₁ और F₂, भुजा a वाला बल-युग्म बनाते हैं:Uniform B mein steady current wala rectangular loop koi net force nahi lekin torque feel karta hai — bilkul uniform E mein electric dipole ki tarah (Section 1.11). Pehle B ko loop ke plane mein rakhiye (Fig. 4.18a). Arms BC aur DA, B ke parallel → koi force nahi. Arm AB (length b) par F₁ = I b B page ke andar, arm CD par F₂ = I b B page se bahar. Net force zero, lekin F₁ aur F₂, arm a wala couple banate hain:

Now let the normal to the loop make an angle θ with B (Fig. 4.19). Forces on BC and DA are equal, opposite and collinear (along the axis) → they cancel, no torque. F₁ and F₂ on AB and CD are still I b B but are no longer in line: the arm of the couple shrinks to a sin θ:अब पाश का अभिलंब B से कोण θ बनाए (चित्र 4.19)। Define the magnetic moment of the loop as m = I A, where the direction of the area vector A comes from the right-hand thumb rule (curl the fingers along the current; the thumb gives A). Its unit is A m² and dimensions [A][L²]. Both results become one vector equation:पाश का चुंबकीय आघूर्ण m = I A परिभाषित करें, जहाँ क्षेत्रफल सदिश A की दिशा दाहिने हाथ के अँगूठे के नियम से (उँगलियाँ धारा की दिशा में; अँगूठा A देता है)। इसका मात्रक A m² और विमा [A][L²] है। Loop ka magnetic moment m = I A define kijiye, jahan area vector A ki direction right-hand thumb rule se (ungliyan current ki direction mein; angootha A deta hai). Iski unit A m² aur dimensions [A][L²] hain. Dono results ek vector equation ban jaate hain:

τ = 0 when m is parallel or antiparallel to B. Parallel is stable equilibrium (a small turn creates a torque that brings it back); antiparallel is unstable (a small turn grows). This torque is why a small magnet, or any magnetic dipole, lines up with an external field.जब m, B के समांतर या प्रतिसमांतर हो तो τ = 0। समांतर स्थायी संतुलन है (थोड़ा घुमाने पर बल आघूर्ण उसे वापस लाता है); प्रतिसमांतर अस्थायी है (थोड़ा घुमाने पर घुमाव बढ़ता है)। इसी बल आघूर्ण के कारण छोटा चुंबक या कोई भी चुंबकीय द्विध्रुव बाह्य क्षेत्र की दिशा में संरेखित हो जाता है।Jab m, B ke parallel ya antiparallel ho to τ = 0. (a) No. That needs τ along the vertical. But τ = I A × B, and A of a horizontal loop is vertical, so τ always lies in the plane of the loop, whatever B is.(a) नहीं। इसके लिए τ ऊर्ध्वाधर होना चाहिए। पर τ = I A × B, और क्षैतिज पाश का A ऊर्ध्वाधर है, अतः B कुछ भी हो, τ सदा पाश के तल में रहेगा।(a) Nahi. Iske liye τ vertical hona chahiye. Lekin τ = I A × B, aur horizontal loop ka A vertical hai, isliye B kuch bhi ho, τ hamesha loop ke plane mein rahega.

(b) Stable equilibrium: A (and m) along the external B. Then the loop’s own field is in the same direction as the external field, both normal to the loop — so the flux of the total field is maximum.(b) स्थायी संतुलन: A (और m) बाह्य B के अनुदिश। (b) Stable equilibrium: A (aur m) external B ke along. Tab loop ka apna field external field ki direction mein hota hai, dono loop ke normal — isliye total field ka flux maximum.

(c) It becomes a circle with its plane normal to the field to maximise the flux, because for a given perimeter a circle encloses more area than any other shape.(c) (c) Ye flux maximum karne ke liye field ke normal plane wala circle ban jaata hai, kyunki diye perimeter ke liye circle kisi bhi aur shape se zyada area gherta hai.

These are exactly the electric-dipole results E = 2p/4πε₀x³ (axis) and p/4πε₀x³ (bisector) with p → m and 1/ε₀ → μ₀. So a planar current loop is a magnetic dipole of moment m = IA. They become exact for a point dipole. One big difference: an electric dipole is made of two monopoles (+q and −q), but in magnetism the current loop (dipole) is the most elementary unit — magnetic monopoles are not known to exist. Ye bilkul electric dipole ke results E = 2p/4πε₀x³ (axis) aur p/4πε₀x³ (bisector) hain, jahan p → m aur 1/ε₀ → μ₀. Isliye planar current loop m = IA moment ka magnetic dipole hai. Point dipole ke liye ye exact ho jaate hain. Ek bada fark: electric dipole do monopoles (+q aur −q) se banta hai, lekin magnetism mein current loop (dipole) hi sabse basic unit hai — magnetic monopoles ka existence pata nahi.

Moving Coil Galvanometer

The moving coil galvanometer (MCG) detects and measures small currents. It has a coil of many turns that can rotate freely about a fixed axis in a uniform radial magnetic field. Inside the coil sits a cylindrical soft-iron core, which makes the field radial and also stronger. Because the field is radial, the plane of the coil is always along B (m ⊥ B), so the torque is the full NIAB at every position:चल कुंडली गैल्वेनोमीटर (MCG) छोटी धाराओं का पता लगाता और मापता है। Why a galvanometer cannot be used directly as an ammeter: (i) it is very sensitive — it gives full-scale deflection for a current of the order of μA; (ii) an ammeter goes in series, and the galvanometer’s resistance is not small, so it would change the very current being measured. Fix: connect a small shunt resistance rs in parallel with the coil, so most of the current passes through the shunt. The combined resistance is RGrs/(RG + rs) ≈ rs (if RG ≫ rs). The scale is then calibrated in amperes. Galvanometer ko seedhe ammeter kyun nahi bana sakte: (i) ye bahut sensitive hai — μA order ke current par hi full-scale deflection de deta hai; (ii) ammeter series mein lagta hai, aur galvanometer ka resistance chhota nahi, isliye ye measure hone wale current ko hi badal dega. Upay: coil ke parallel mein chhota shunt resistance rs jodiye, taaki zyada current shunt se jaaye. Combined resistance RGrs/(RG + rs) ≈ rs (agar RG ≫ rs). Phir scale ampere mein calibrate kiya jaata hai.

As a voltmeter: the galvanometer must be connected in parallel across the element and must draw very little current, so a large resistance R is connected in series with it. Doubling N does not always help. N → 2N doubles the current sensitivity. But the coil resistance RG also roughly doubles (twice the wire), so the voltage sensitivity φ/V = (NAB/k)(1/R) stays about the same. A manufacturer must balance the two.N N double karna hamesha faydemand nahi. N → 2N se current sensitivity double hoti hai. Lekin coil ka resistance RG bhi lagbhag double (double wire) ho jaata hai, isliye voltage sensitivity φ/V = (NAB/k)(1/R) lagbhag wahi rehti hai. Manufacturer ko dono mein balance rakhna padta hai.
