Introduction
Magnetism is everywhere — from distant galaxies to tiny atoms, and even the Earth has been a magnet since long before humans existed. The word magnet comes from Magnesia, a place in Greece where magnetic ore (lodestone) was found as early as 600 BC. In Chapter 4 you saw that moving charges (currents) produce magnetic fields (Oersted, Ampere, Biot and Savart). In this chapter we study magnetism as a subject of its own — magnets and magnetic materials. Chapter 4 mein aapne dekha ki moving charges (currents) magnetic field banate hain (Oersted, Ampere, Biot aur Savart). Is chapter mein hum magnetism ko ek alag subject ki tarah padhenge — magnets aur magnetic materials.Magnets are everywhere. Moving charges make magnetic fields. Now we study magnets and magnetic materials.
Some ideas you already know:कुछ बातें जो आप पहले से जानते हैं:Kuch baatein jo aap pehle se jaante hain:
- (i) The Earth behaves as a magnet, its field pointing roughly from geographic south to geographic north.(i)
- (ii) A freely suspended bar magnet points north–south. The end pointing to geographic north is the north pole (N), the other the south pole (S).(ii) (ii) Freely latkaaya gaya bar magnet north–south mein rukta hai. Geographic north ki taraf wala sira north pole (N) aur doosra south pole (S) kehlata hai.
- (iii) Like poles (N–N or S–S) repel; unlike poles (N–S) attract.(iii) (iii) Same poles (N–N ya S–S) repel karte hain; opposite poles (N–S) attract karte hain.
- (iv) You cannot isolate a north or a south pole. Break a bar magnet in two and you get two smaller magnets (somewhat weaker). Isolated poles — magnetic monopoles — do not exist, unlike electric charges.(iv) (iv) North ya south pole ko alag nahi kiya ja sakta. Bar magnet ko do tukdon mein todiye to do chhote (thode weak) magnets milte hain. Alag poles — magnetic monopoles — exist nahi karte, jabki electric charges alag hote hain.
- (v) Magnets can be made from iron and its alloys.(v)
Magnets are inside your phone speaker and vibration motor, fridge-door seals, electric motors and fans, the compass app’s sensor, MRI scanners in hospitals and the maglev trains you will meet in this chapter. Magnets aapke phone ke speaker aur vibration motor mein, fridge ke darwaaze ki seal mein, electric motors aur fans mein, compass app ke sensor mein, hospitals ki MRI machines mein aur maglev trains mein hain (jinke baare mein isi chapter mein padhenge).
5.2The Bar Magnetछड़ चुंबकBar Magnet
Sprinkle iron filings on a glass sheet placed over a short bar magnet and tap the sheet. The filings arrange themselves in a beautiful pattern (Fig 5.1). The pattern shows that the magnet has two poles, much like the + and − charges of an electric dipole: one is called the North pole and the other the South pole. A current-carrying solenoid gives a very similar pattern. Ek chhote bar magnet ke upar rakhi glass sheet par iron filings chhidakiye aur sheet ko halke se thapthapaaiye. Filings ek sundar pattern mein lag jaati hain (Fig 5.1). Pattern dikhata hai ki magnet ke do poles hain, bilkul electric dipole ke + aur − charges ki tarah: ek North pole aur doosra South pole. Current-carrying solenoid bhi lagbhag aisa hi pattern deta hai.Iron filings around a magnet show two poles, like a dipole. A solenoid gives the same pattern.
Magnetic field lines
The filings let us draw magnetic field lines — a picture of the magnetic field B. Fig 5.2 shows them for (a) a bar magnet and (b) a current-carrying finite solenoid, with (c) the electric dipole for comparison. Far away, all three look very similar. इनके गुण:Filings se hum magnetic field lines bana sakte hain — magnetic field B ki ek picture. Fig 5.2 mein (a) bar magnet, (b) current-carrying finite solenoid aur comparison ke liye (c) electric dipole ki lines hain. Door se teeno lagbhag ek jaisi dikhti hain. Inke properties:
- (i) Magnetic field lines of a magnet (or a solenoid) form continuous closed loops — outside from N to S, inside the magnet from S to N. Electric dipole lines instead begin on + and end on − (or escape to infinity).(i) (i) Magnet (ya solenoid) ki field lines continuous closed loops banati hain — bahar N se S, magnet ke andar S se N. Electric dipole ki lines + se shuru hokar − par khatam hoti hain (ya infinity tak jaati hain).
- (ii) The tangent to a field line at a point gives the direction of the net field B there.(ii) (ii) Kisi point par field line ki tangent wahan net field B ki direction batati hai.
- (iii) The more lines crossing a unit area, the stronger B is. In Fig 5.2(a), B is larger around region ii than around region i.(iii) (iii) Unit area se jitni zyada lines guzrein, B utna hi strong. Fig 5.2(a) mein region ii ke paas B, region i se zyada hai.
- (iv) Field lines never intersect — at a crossing the field would have two directions, which is impossible.(iv) (iv) Field lines kabhi ek doosre ko cross nahi karti — crossing par field ki do directions hoti, jo impossible hai.
Some books call them “magnetic lines of force”. NCERT avoids this name: unlike electric lines, magnetic field lines do not show the direction of the force on a moving charge (that force, qv × B, is perpendicular to B). Kuch books inhe “magnetic lines of force” kehti hain. NCERT ye naam avoid karti hai: electric lines ke ulat, magnetic field lines moving charge par force ki direction nahi batati (wo force qv × B, B ke perpendicular hota hai).
Real 3D: the lines fill all of space around the magnet, not just a flat sheet. Rotate it and wrap a closed surface round a pole — as many lines go in as come out. Real 3D: lines sirf ek flat sheet mein nahi, magnet ke chaaron taraf poore space mein hain. Ise ghumaaiye aur kisi pole ke around closed surface lagaaiye — jitni lines andar jaati hain utni bahar aati hain.
One way to plot field lines is to place a small compass needle at many points and note which way it points: the needle’s N end points along B at that place. Joining these directions point to point gives the field lines. Field lines plot karne ka ek tarika: kai points par chhoti compass needle rakhkar dekhiye ki wo kidhar point karti hai: needle ka N end us jagah B ki direction mein hota hai. In directions ko point-to-point jodne se field lines milti hain.Put small compass needles around the magnet. Each N tip points along B. Join them to get field lines.
Drag and turn the bar magnet (or switch to a solenoid, or cut the magnet in two). Every compass needle turns to the real computed field; tap anywhere to read B there. Bar magnet ko drag aur rotate kijiye (ya solenoid chuniye, ya magnet ko do tukdon mein kaatiye). Har compass needle real computed field ki taraf ghoomti hai; kahin bhi tap karke wahan B padhiye.
5.2.2Bar magnet as an equivalent solenoidतुल्य परिनालिका के रूप में छड़ चुंबकBar magnet ek equivalent solenoid ki tarah
In Chapter 4 you saw that a current loop acts as a magnetic dipole. Ampere’s hypothesis: all magnetic phenomena can be explained by circulating currents. The field lines of a bar magnet and of a solenoid look alike, so we may think of a bar magnet as a large number of tiny circulating currents — just like a solenoid. Chapter 4 mein aapne dekha ki current loop ek magnetic dipole ki tarah kaam karta hai. Bar magnet aur solenoid ki field lines ek jaisi dikhti hain, isliye bar magnet ko bahut saare chhote circulating currents ka group maan sakte hain — bilkul solenoid ki tarah.A bar magnet behaves like a solenoid: think of it as many tiny current loops.
Cutting a bar magnet in half is like cutting a solenoid: you get two smaller solenoids with weaker magnetic properties. The field lines stay continuous, coming out of one face and entering the other. A small compass moved around a bar magnet and around a finite solenoid deflects in the same way. Bar magnet ko aadha kaatna solenoid ko kaatne jaisa hai: do chhote, weak solenoids milte hain. Field lines continuous rehti hain — ek face se nikal kar doosre mein jaati hain. Bar magnet aur finite solenoid ke paas ghumaayi gayi chhoti compass needle ek jaisa deflection dikhati hai.
To make the analogy firm, one calculates the axial field of a finite solenoid (Fig 5.3a). At a far point P on the axis (r much larger than the solenoid), its magnitude is:इस समानता को पक्का करने के लिए परिमित परिनालिका का अक्षीय क्षेत्र परिकलित किया जाता है (चित्र 5.3a)। अक्ष पर दूर के बिंदु P पर (r परिनालिका से बहुत बड़ा) इसका परिमाण है:Is analogy ko pakka karne ke liye finite solenoid ka axial field calculate kiya jaata hai (Fig 5.3a).
This is also the far axial field of a bar magnet measured in experiments. So a bar magnet and a solenoid produce similar fields, and the magnetic moment of a bar magnet equals the magnetic moment of the equivalent solenoid that produces the same field. Experiments mein naapa gaya bar magnet ka far axial field bhi yahi hai. Isliye bar magnet aur solenoid similar field banate hain, aur bar magnet ka magnetic moment us equivalent solenoid ke moment ke barabar hai jo wahi field banata hai.
Where 5.1 comes from (sketch): a slice dx of the solenoid has n·dx turns, a loop of moment (n dx)I·πa². Its axial field at P is (μ₀/4π)·2(n dx Iπa²)/(r − x)³ when r − x ≫ a. Adding all slices from x = −l to +l with r ≫ l gives (μ₀/4π)·2[n(2l)Iπa²]/r³ = (μ₀/4π)·2m/r³.5.1 कहाँ से आता है (संक्षेप): परिनालिका के dx भाग में n·dx फेरे हैं, यानी (n dx)I·πa² आघूर्ण का लूप। r − x ≫ a होने पर P पर इसका अक्षीय क्षेत्र (μ₀/4π)·2(n dx Iπa²)/(r − x)³ है। x = −l से +l तक सभी भाग जोड़ने पर, r ≫ l के लिए, (μ₀/4π)·2[n(2l)Iπa²]/r³ = (μ₀/4π)·2m/r³ मिलता है।5.1 kahan se aata hai (sketch): solenoid ke dx slice mein n·dx turns hain, yaani (n dx)I·πa² moment ka loop. r − x ≫ a hone par P par iska axial field (μ₀/4π)·2(n dx Iπa²)/(r − x)³ hai. x = −l se +l tak saare slices jodne par, r ≫ l ke liye, (μ₀/4π)·2[n(2l)Iπa²]/r³ = (μ₀/4π)·2m/r³ milta hai.
5.2.3The dipole in a uniform magnetic fieldएकसमान चुंबकीय क्षेत्र में द्विध्रुवUniform magnetic field mein dipole
Place a small compass needle of magnetic moment m in a uniform field B and let it swing (Fig 5.3b). In a uniform field the forces on its two ends are equal and opposite, so the net force is zero — but there is a torque that turns m towards B:चुंबकीय आघूर्ण m वाली छोटी कम्पास सुई को एकसमान क्षेत्र B में रखकर दोलन करने दें (चित्र 5.3b)। Uniform field mein iske dono ends par force barabar aur opposite hain, isliye net force zero hai — par ek torque lagta hai jo m ko B ki taraf ghumaata hai:In a uniform field: no net force, but a torque that turns the needle towards B.
The magnetic potential energy is found just like electrostatic potential energy, by integrating the torque:चुंबकीय स्थितिज ऊर्जा स्थिरवैद्युत स्थितिज ऊर्जा की तरह बल आघूर्ण का समाकलन करके मिलती है:Magnetic potential energy electrostatic potential energy ki tarah torque ko integrate karke milti hai:
The zero of potential energy can be fixed where convenient; taking the integration constant as zero puts U = 0 at θ = 90°. Then U is minimum (−mB) at θ = 0° — the most stable position — and maximum (+mB) at θ = 180° — the most unstable position. Potential energy ka zero suvidha anusaar chuna ja sakta hai; integration constant zero lene par θ = 90° par U = 0. Tab U θ = 0° par minimum (−mB) hai — sabse stable position — aur θ = 180° par maximum (+mB) — sabse unstable position.U = −mB cos θ. Lowest at 0° (stable), highest at 180° (unstable), zero at 90°.
Set the angle θ, the moment m and the field B. Read τ = mB sin θ and U = −mB cos θ live, see the point move on the U(θ) curve, then let go and watch the needle oscillate about θ = 0. Angle θ, moment m aur field B set kijiye. τ = mB sin θ aur U = −mB cos θ live padhiye, U(θ) curve par point ko chalte dekhiye, phir chhodiye aur needle ko θ = 0 ke around oscillate karte dekhiye.
A needle in a uniform field feels no net force, only a torque. Near a bar magnet the field is non-uniform, so a piece of iron feels a net force too (see Example 5.1b). Uniform field mein needle par koi net force nahi, sirf torque lagta hai. Bar magnet ke paas field non-uniform hota hai, isliye iron ke tukde par net force bhi lagta hai (Example 5.1b dekhiye).
Beyond the current book (useful in labs): for small angles the restoring torque −mBθ makes the needle swing in simple harmonic motion with period T = 2π√(I/mB), where I is its moment of inertia. Measuring T gives mB — a classic way to find B or m. The simulation above uses this. Current book se aage (lab mein useful): chhote angles ke liye restoring torque −mBθ se needle SHM karti hai, time period T = 2π√(I/mB), jahan I moment of inertia hai. T naapkar mB milta hai — B ya m nikaalne ka classic tarika. Upar ka simulation isi ka use karta hai.
(a) What happens if a bar magnet is cut into two pieces: (i) transverse to its length, (ii) along its length? (b) A magnetised needle in a uniform magnetic field experiences a torque but no net force. An iron nail near a bar magnet, however, experiences a force of attraction in addition to a torque. Why? (c) Must every magnetic configuration have a north pole and a south pole? What about the field due to a toroid? (d) Two identical-looking iron bars A and B are given, one of which is definitely magnetised (we do not know which). How would one find whether both are magnetised? If only one is, how does one find which one? [Use nothing but the bars A and B.](a) छड़ चुंबक को दो टुकड़ों में काटने पर क्या होता है: (i) लंबाई के आड़े, (ii) लंबाई के अनुदिश? (a) Bar magnet ko do tukdon mein kaatne par kya hota hai: (i) length ke across, (ii) length ke along? (b) Uniform magnetic field mein magnetised needle par torque lagta hai par net force nahi. Lekin bar magnet ke paas iron ki keel par torque ke saath attraction force bhi lagta hai. Kyun? (c) Kya har magnetic configuration mein north aur south pole hona zaroori hai? Toroid ke field ke baare mein kya? (d) Ek jaisi dikhne wali iron ki do bars A aur B di gayi hain, jinmein se ek pakka magnetised hai (pata nahi kaun si). (a) In either case you get two magnets, each with a north and a south pole (see the cutting diagram).(a) (a) Dono cases mein do magnets milte hain, har ek mein north aur south pole (cutting diagram dekhiye).
(b) No force if the field is uniform. The iron nail is in the non-uniform field of the bar magnet. A magnetic moment is induced in the nail, so it feels both force and torque. The net force is attractive because the induced south pole (say) of the nail is closer to the magnet’s north pole than the induced north pole is.(b) (b) Uniform field mein koi force nahi. Iron ki keel bar magnet ke non-uniform field mein hai. Keel mein magnetic moment induce hota hai, isliye us par force aur torque dono lagte hain. Net force attractive hai kyunki keel ka induced south pole (maan lijiye) magnet ke north pole ke, induced north pole ki tulna mein, zyada paas hai.
(c) Not necessarily. It is true only if the source of the field has a net non-zero magnetic moment. This is not so for a toroid (its field is confined inside, no poles) or even for a straight infinite conductor.(c) ज़रूरी नहीं। (c) Zaroori nahi. Ye tabhi sach hai jab field ke source ka net magnetic moment non-zero ho. Toroid (field andar confined, koi pole nahi) ya seedhe infinite conductor ke liye aisa nahi hai.
(d) Bring different ends of the bars close. If you ever see repulsion, both are magnetised. If it is always attraction, only one is magnetised. To find which: a magnet’s field is strongest at its ends and weakest at the middle. Hold A and lower one of its ends first onto an end of B, then onto the middle of B. If A feels no force at the middle of B, then B is the magnet. If you notice no change from the end to the middle of B, then A is the magnet.(d) (d) Bars ke alag-alag ends paas laaiye. Agar kabhi repulsion dikhe to dono magnetised hain. Agar hamesha attraction ho, to sirf ek magnetised hai. Kaun si, ye jaanne ke liye: magnet ka field ends par sabse strong aur beech mein sabse weak hota hai. A ko uthaakar uska ek end pehle B ke ek end par, phir B ke beech mein le jaaiye. The potential energy is that of one dipole (Q) in the field of the other (P): U = −mQ·BP. P’s field is BP = −(μ₀/4π)mP/r³ on its normal bisector and BP = (μ₀/4π)2mP/r³ on its axis. Equilibrium is stable when mQ is parallel to BP and unstable when anti-parallel; if mQ is at an angle to BP there is a torque — no equilibrium. For example, Q3 is on the normal bisector of P and its moment is parallel to the field there (both point opposite to mP), so Q3 is stable. Potential energy ek dipole (Q) ki doosre (P) ke field mein energy hai: U = −mQ·BP. P ka field normal bisector par BP = −(μ₀/4π)mP/r³ aur axis par BP = (μ₀/4π)2mP/r³ hai. Equilibrium stable hai jab mQ, BP ke parallel aur unstable jab anti-parallel; agar mQ, BP se kisi angle par hai to torque lagta hai — equilibrium nahi. Jaise Q3, P ke normal bisector par hai aur uska moment wahan ke field ke parallel hai (dono mP ke opposite), isliye Q3 stable hai.

(b) (i) Stable: PQ3, PQ6; (ii) unstable: PQ5, PQ4. (c) PQ6 — axis par field double strong hai aur mQ uske parallel hai, isliye U = −2(μ₀/4π)m²/r³ sabse kam hai.
Magnetism aur Gauss’s Law
In Chapter 1 you met Gauss’s law for electrostatics. In Fig 5.2(c), for the closed surface i (no charge inside) as many lines leave as enter; for surface ii, which encloses a positive charge, there is a net outward flux. Magnetic fields are radically different: their lines are continuous closed loops. Look at surfaces i and ii in Fig 5.2(a) or 5.2(b): the number of lines leaving is balanced by the number entering, so the net magnetic flux is zero for both — and in fact for any closed surface. Chapter 1 mein aapne electrostatics ka Gauss’s law padha. Fig 5.2(c) mein closed surface i (andar koi charge nahi) se jitni lines nikalti hain utni hi ghusti hain; positive charge ko gherne wale surface ii se net outward flux hai. Magnetic fields bilkul alag hain: inki lines continuous closed loops hain. Fig 5.2(a) ya 5.2(b) mein surfaces i aur ii dekhiye: nikalne wali lines ki sankhya ghusne wali ke barabar hai, isliye dono ke liye net magnetic flux zero hai — asal mein kisi bhi closed surface ke liye.Magnetic lines are closed loops, so as many lines enter any closed surface as leave it: net flux zero.
Divide a closed surface S into small area elements ΔS (vector, pointing outward). The flux through one element is ΔφB = B·ΔS. Closed surface S ko chhote area elements ΔS (vector, bahar ki taraf) mein baantiye. Ek element se flux ΔφB = B·ΔS hai. Saare elements par jodne par:
The difference reflects a basic fact: isolated magnetic poles (monopoles) are not known to exist. There are no sources or sinks of B; the simplest magnetic element is a dipole or a current loop, and all magnetic phenomena can be explained by arrangements of dipoles and/or current loops. Thus, Gauss’s law for magnetism: the net magnetic flux through any closed surface is zero. Ye fark ek basic fact dikhata hai: isolated magnetic poles (monopoles) exist karte hue nahi mile. B ke koi source ya sink nahi; sabse simple magnetic element dipole ya current loop hai, aur saari magnetic phenomena dipoles aur/ya current loops se samjhaai ja sakti hain. Isliye magnetism ke liye Gauss’s law: kisi bhi closed surface se guzarne wala net magnetic flux zero hota hai.No magnetic monopoles → no sources of B → net magnetic flux through any closed surface is zero.

(a) Wrong. Magnetic field lines can never come out of a point (or a line) — the net flux of B over any closed surface must be zero. The lines shown are the electric field of a long positively charged wire. The correct magnetic lines circle a straight current-carrying conductor (Chapter 4).(a) गलत। (a) Galat. Magnetic field lines kisi point (ya line) se nahi nikal sakti — kisi bhi closed surface par B ka net flux zero hona chahiye. Dikhaayi gayi lines lambe positively charged wire ka electric field hain. Sahi magnetic lines seedhe current-carrying conductor ko gol gherti hain (Chapter 4).
(b) Wrong. Field lines can never cross each other (the direction at the crossing would be ambiguous). Further error: static magnetic field lines can never form closed loops around empty space — a closed loop of B must enclose a region through which a current passes. By contrast, electrostatic field lines can never form closed loops at all.(b) गलत। (b) Galat. Field lines ek doosre ko kabhi cross nahi karti (crossing par direction ambiguous hogi). Doosri galti: static magnetic field lines khaali space ke around closed loop nahi bana sakti — B ka closed loop aise region ko gherna chahiye jisse current guzarta ho. Iske ulat, electrostatic field lines kabhi closed loop nahi banati.
(c) Right. Magnetic lines are completely confined within a toroid. Closed loops are fine here because each loop encloses the region through which the winding current passes. (Only a few lines are drawn; the entire region enclosed by the windings has a field.)(c) सही। (c) Sahi. Magnetic lines toroid ke andar poori tarah confined hain. Yahan closed loops theek hain kyunki har loop us region ko gherta hai jisse windings ka current guzarta hai. (Kuch hi lines dikhaayi hain; windings se ghire poore region mein field hai.)
(d) Wrong. Field lines of a solenoid at its ends and outside cannot be so completely straight and confined — that violates Ampere’s law. The lines should curve out at both ends and meet to form closed loops.(d) गलत। (d) Galat. Solenoid ke ends par aur bahar field lines itni seedhi aur confined nahi ho sakti — ye Ampere’s law ka violation hai. Lines dono ends par bahar mudkar aapas mein milkar closed loops banani chahiye.
(e) Right. These are field lines outside and inside a bar magnet. Note the direction of the lines inside. Not all lines emanate out of a north pole (or converge into a south pole); around both poles the net flux is zero.(e) सही। (e) Sahi. Ye bar magnet ke bahar aur andar ki field lines hain. Andar lines ki direction par dhyaan dijiye. Saari lines north pole se nahi nikalti (ya south pole mein nahi milti); dono poles ke around net flux zero hai.
(f) Wrong. These cannot be magnetic: in the upper region all lines seem to come out of the shaded plate, so the net flux through a surface around it is not zero — impossible for B. These are in fact electrostatic lines around a positively charged upper plate and a negatively charged lower plate. Grasp the difference between (e) and (f) carefully.(f) गलत। (f) Galat. Ye magnetic nahi ho sakti: upar ke region mein saari lines shaded plate se nikalti lagti hain, isliye uske around surface se net flux zero nahi — B ke liye impossible. Asal mein ye positively charged upar ki aur negatively charged neeche ki plate ke around electrostatic lines hain. (e) aur (f) ka fark dhyaan se samjhiye.
(g) Wrong. Magnetic field lines between two pole pieces cannot be precisely straight at the ends; some fringing is inevitable, otherwise Ampere’s law is violated. This is also true for electric field lines.(g) गलत। (g) Galat. Do pole pieces ke beech magnetic field lines ends par bilkul seedhi nahi ho sakti; kuch fringing (bahar ubhaar) zaroori hai, warna Ampere’s law tootta hai. Ye electric field lines ke liye bhi sach hai.

(a) No. The magnetic force on a moving charge, F = qv × B, is always perpendicular to B. So it is misleading to call magnetic field lines “lines of force”.(a) नहीं। (a) Nahi. Moving charge par magnetic force F = qv × B hamesha B ke perpendicular hota hai. Isliye magnetic field lines ko “lines of force” kehna misleading hai.
(b) Gauss’s law of magnetism says the flux of B through any closed surface is zero: ∮ B·dS = 0. If monopoles existed, the right-hand side would equal μ₀ times the monopole (magnetic charge) qm enclosed by S: ∮ B·dS = μ₀qm — analogous to Gauss’s law of electrostatics.(b) (b) Magnetism ka Gauss’s law kehta hai ki kisi bhi closed surface se B ka flux zero hai: ∮ B·dS = 0. Agar monopoles hote, to right-hand side S se ghire monopole (magnetic charge) qm ka μ₀ guna hota: ∮ B·dS = μ₀qm — electrostatics ke Gauss’s law jaisa.
(c) No. There is no force or torque on an element due to the field produced by that element itself. But there is a force (or torque) on an element due to other elements of the same wire. (For the special case of a straight wire, this force is zero.)(c) नहीं। (c) Nahi. Kisi element par usi ke banaye field se koi force ya torque nahi lagta. Par usi wire ke doosre elements ki wajah se force (ya torque) lagta hai. (Seedhe wire ke special case mein ye force zero hai.)
(d) Yes. The average charge may be zero, yet the magnetic moments of the various current loops need not average to zero. Paramagnetic atoms are an example: they have a net magnetic moment though their net charge is zero.(d) हाँ। (d) Haan. Average charge zero ho sakta hai, phir bhi alag current loops ke magnetic moments ka average zero hona zaroori nahi. Paramagnetic atoms example hain: inka net charge zero hai par net magnetic moment hai.
Magnetisation aur Magnetic Intensity
The Earth has a huge variety of elements and compounds, and we keep making new alloys. To classify their magnetic behaviour we need a few new terms. A circulating electron in an atom has a magnetic moment. In a bulk material these moments add up vectorially and may give a non-zero net moment. The magnetisation M of a sample is its net magnetic moment per unit volume:पृथ्वी पर तत्वों और यौगिकों की अपार विविधता है, और हम नई मिश्रधातुएँ बनाते रहते हैं। Inke magnetic behaviour ko classify karne ke liye kuch naye terms chahiye. Atom mein ghoomte electron ka magnetic moment hota hai. Bulk material mein ye moments vectorially judte hain aur non-zero net moment de sakte hain. Kisi sample ka magnetisation M per unit volume uska net magnetic moment hai:Magnetisation M = total magnetic moment ÷ volume.
Take a long solenoid with n turns per unit length carrying current I. The field inside (empty) is B₀ = μ₀nI (5.8). Fill the inside with a material of non-zero magnetisation and the field becomes larger: B = B₀ + Bm (5.9), where Bm, the field due to the core material, is proportional to its magnetisation: Bm = μ₀M (5.10). Here μ₀ is the same constant (permeability of vacuum) that appears in the Biot–Savart law.n फेरे प्रति एकांक लंबाई वाली लंबी परिनालिका लें जिसमें धारा I है। n turns per unit length wala lamba solenoid lijiye jismein current I hai. Andar (khaali) field B₀ = μ₀nI (5.8) hai. Andar non-zero magnetisation wala material bhar dijiye to field badh jaata hai: B = B₀ + Bm (5.9), jahan core material ka field Bm uske magnetisation ke proportional hai: Bm = μ₀M (5.10). It is convenient to define another vector field, the magnetic intensity H:एक और सदिश क्षेत्र, चुंबकीय तीव्रता H, परिभाषित करना सुविधाजनक है:Ek aur vector field, magnetic intensity H, define karna convenient hai:
So the total field inside is split into two parts: one due to external factors such as the current in the solenoid — this is H; the other due to the specific nature of the material — this is M. (b) M = (B − μ₀H)/μ₀ = (μᵣμ₀H − μ₀H)/μ₀ = (μᵣ − 1)H = 399 × 2 × 10³ = 7.98 × 10⁵ ≈ 8 × 10⁵ A m⁻¹.(b) M = (B − μ₀H)/μ₀ = (μᵣμ₀H − μ₀H)/μ₀ = (μᵣ − 1)H = 399 × 2 × 10³ = 7.98 × 10⁵ ≈ 8 × 10⁵ A m⁻¹।(b) M = (B − μ₀H)/μ₀ = (μᵣμ₀H − μ₀H)/μ₀ = (μᵣ − 1)H = 399 × 2 × 10³ = 7.98 × 10⁵ ≈ 8 × 10⁵ A m⁻¹.
(d) The magnetising current Im is the extra current that would have to flow in the windings, without the core, to give the same B as with the core: B = μ₀n(I + Im). With I = 2 A and B = 1.0 T: I + Im = 1.0/(4π × 10⁻⁷ × 1000) ≈ 796 A, so Im ≈ 794 A (NCERT’s answer). Using the unrounded B = 1.005 T gives exactly Im = (μᵣ − 1)I = 798 A — the small difference is only rounding.(d) चुंबकन धारा Im वह अतिरिक्त धारा है जो क्रोड के बिना फेरों में बहानी पड़ती ताकि क्रोड वाला B मिले: B = μ₀n(I + Im)। I = 2 A और B = 1.0 T लेने पर: I + Im = 1.0/(4π × 10⁻⁷ × 1000) ≈ 796 A, अतः Im ≈ 794 A (NCERT का उत्तर)। (d) Magnetising current Im wo extra current hai jo core ke bina windings mein bahaana padta taaki core wala B mile: B = μ₀n(I + Im). I = 2 A aur B = 1.0 T lene par: I + Im = 1.0/(4π × 10⁻⁷ × 1000) ≈ 796 A, isliye Im ≈ 794 A (NCERT ka answer). Bina round kiye B = 1.005 T lene par exactly Im = (μᵣ − 1)I = 798 A — chhota fark sirf rounding ka hai.
In some printings the last step reads “B = μᵣn(I + IM)”; the correct relation is B = μ₀n(I + Im) — the magnetising current replaces the core, so only μ₀ appears. Kuch printings mein last step “B = μᵣn(I + IM)” chhapa hai; sahi relation B = μ₀n(I + Im) hai — magnetising current core ki jagah leta hai, isliye sirf μ₀ aata hai.

Using susceptibility χ we classify materials: diamagnetic if χ is negative, paramagnetic if χ is positive and small, and ferromagnetic if χ is large and positive. Table 5.2 gives a better feel (ε is a small positive number used to quantify paramagnetic materials). Susceptibility χ se hum materials ko classify karte hain: χ negative ho to diamagnetic, χ positive aur chhota ho to paramagnetic, aur χ bada aur positive ho to ferromagnetic. Table 5.2 se better feel milta hai (ε ek chhota positive number hai jo paramagnetic materials ko quantify karta hai).χ negative → diamagnetic; χ small positive → paramagnetic; χ large positive → ferromagnetic.

Diamagnetism
Diamagnetic substances tend to move from the stronger to the weaker part of an external field — a magnet repels them (unlike iron, which it attracts). In Fig 5.7(a) a diamagnetic bar placed in a field expels the field lines a little, and the field inside is reduced — usually only by about one part in 10⁵. In a non-uniform field the bar moves from high field to low field. Diamagnetic substances external field ke strong se weak hisse ki taraf jaane ki tendency rakhte hain — magnet inhe repel karta hai (iron ke ulat, jise wo attract karta hai). Fig 5.7(a) mein field mein rakhi diamagnetic bar field lines ko thoda bahar dhakelti hai aur andar field kam ho jaata hai — aam taur par sirf lagbhag 10⁵ mein ek hissa. Diamagnets are pushed from strong field to weak field; they push field lines out a tiny bit.
Simplest explanation: electrons orbiting the nucleus have orbital angular momentum, so they are like current loops with orbital magnetic moments. In a diamagnetic atom the resultant moment is zero. When a field is applied, electrons whose orbital moment is along the field slow down and those opposite to it speed up (an induced effect following Lenz’s law, Chapter 6). So the substance develops a net moment opposite to the applied field — hence repulsion. Sabse simple explanation: nucleus ke around ghoomte electrons ka orbital angular momentum hota hai, isliye wo orbital magnetic moment wale current loops jaise hain. Diamagnetic atom mein resultant moment zero hota hai. Field lagane par jin electrons ka orbital moment field ke along hai wo slow aur opposite wale fast ho jaate hain (ye Lenz’s law ke hisaab se induced effect hai, Chapter 6). Isliye material mein lagaaye field ke opposite net moment banta hai — isliye repulsion. The applied field changes electron orbits so a small moment appears opposite to the field → repulsion.
Some diamagnetic materials: bismuth, copper, lead, silicon, nitrogen (at STP), water and sodium chloride. Diamagnetism is present in all substances, but it is so weak that in most cases it is masked by other effects such as paramagnetism or ferromagnetism. Kuch diamagnetic materials: bismuth, copper, lead, silicon, nitrogen (STP par), paani aur sodium chloride. Diamagnetism saare substances mein hota hai, par ye itna weak hai ki zyaadatar cases mein paramagnetism ya ferromagnetism jaise effects ise dhak lete hain.
The most exotic diamagnets are superconductors: metals cooled to very low temperatures that show both perfect conductivity and perfect diamagnetism — the field lines are completely expelled, χ = −1 and μᵣ = 0. A superconductor repels a magnet and (Newton’s third law) is repelled by it. This perfect diamagnetism is the Meissner effect. Superconducting magnets are used, for example, in magnetically levitated superfast trains. Sabse anokhe diamagnets superconductors hain: bahut low temperature tak thandi ki gayi metals jo perfect conductivity aur perfect diamagnetism dono dikhati hain — field lines poori tarah bahar nikal jaati hain, χ = −1 aur μᵣ = 0. Superconductor magnet ko repel karta hai aur (Newton ke third law se) usse repel hota hai. Is perfect diamagnetism ko Meissner effect kehte hain. Superconducting magnets, jaise, magnetically levitated superfast trains mein use hote hain.
Floating frog: a very strong magnet (about 16 T) can levitate a living frog — because water, the main part of the frog, is diamagnetic. And maglev trains float above the track using superconducting magnets, so there is no wheel friction. Tairta medhak: bahut strong magnet (lagbhag 16 T) ek zinda medhak ko hawa mein utha sakta hai — kyunki medhak ka main hissa paani diamagnetic hai. Maglev trains superconducting magnets se track ke upar tairti hain, isliye wheels ka friction nahi hota.
Paramagnetism
Paramagnetic substances get weakly magnetised in an external field and tend to move from weak to strong field — they are weakly attracted to a magnet. Their atoms (ions or molecules) each have a permanent magnetic dipole moment, but ceaseless random thermal motion keeps them pointing every way, so there is no net magnetisation. In a strong enough field B₀, and at low temperature, the atomic moments can be made to line up along B₀. Paramagnetic substances external field mein weakly magnetised hote hain aur weak se strong field ki taraf jaane ki tendency rakhte hain — magnet inhe halka sa attract karta hai. Inke har atom (ion ya molecule) ka permanent magnetic dipole moment hota hai, par lagataar random thermal motion ki wajah se wo har direction mein rehte hain, isliye koi net magnetisation nahi hota. Kaafi strong field B₀ aur low temperature par atomic moments ko B₀ ki direction mein align kiya ja sakta hai.Para atoms are tiny magnets pointing randomly; a strong field at low temperature lines them up a little → weak attraction.
Fig 5.7(b): a paramagnetic bar in a field concentrates the field lines inside, and the field inside is enhanced — usually only by about one part in 10⁵. In a non-uniform field it moves from weak to strong field. Examples: aluminium, sodium, calcium, oxygen (at STP) and copper chloride. For a paramagnet both χ and μᵣ depend on the material and also (in a simple way) on temperature. As the field increases or the temperature falls, the magnetisation grows until it reaches saturation, when all dipoles are perfectly aligned with the field. Fig 5.7(b): field mein rakhi paramagnetic bar andar field lines ko concentrate karti hai aur andar field badh jaata hai — aam taur par sirf lagbhag 10⁵ mein ek hissa. Field badhane ya temperature ghataane par magnetisation badhta hai jab tak saturation na aa jaaye, jab saare dipoles field ke along poori tarah align hon.
Beyond the book: the simple temperature dependence is Curie’s law, χ = C/T (C is a constant for the material, T in kelvin): halve the absolute temperature and the paramagnetic susceptibility doubles. Book se aage: ye simple temperature dependence Curie’s law hai, χ = C/T (C material ka constant, T kelvin mein): absolute temperature aadha kijiye to paramagnetic susceptibility double ho jaati hai.
Ferromagnetism
Ferromagnetic substances get strongly magnetised in an external field and are strongly attracted to a magnet. Their atoms have dipole moments as in a paramagnet, but they interact with one another so that they spontaneously align in a common direction over a macroscopic volume called a domain (explaining this cooperative effect needs quantum mechanics). A typical domain is about 1 mm in size and contains about 10¹¹ atoms. Each domain has a net magnetisation, but at first it varies randomly from domain to domain — no bulk magnetisation (Fig 5.8a). Ferromagnetic substances external field mein strongly magnetised hote hain aur magnet ki taraf zor se attract hote hain. Inke atoms ke dipole moments paramagnet ki tarah hote hain, par wo aapas mein is tarah interact karte hain ki ek bade volume — jise domain kehte hain — mein apne aap ek hi direction mein align ho jaate hain (is cooperative effect ko samjhaane ke liye quantum mechanics chahiye). Ek typical domain lagbhag 1 mm ka hota hai aur usmein lagbhag 10¹¹ atoms hote hain. Har domain ka net magnetisation hota hai, par shuru mein ye domain-to-domain random hota hai — koi bulk magnetisation nahi (Fig 5.8a).In iron, atoms line up together in small regions called domains (~1 mm, ~10¹¹ atoms). Domains point randomly at first.
Apply an external field B₀ and the domains orient themselves along B₀, while the domains already along B₀ grow in size. This is not a guess: sprinkle a liquid suspension of powdered ferromagnetic substance on a sample and the domain motion can be watched under a microscope. Fig 5.8(b) shows the domains aligned and amalgamated into a single “giant” domain. So in a ferromagnet the field lines are highly concentrated; in a non-uniform field the sample moves towards the region of high field. External field B₀ lagane par domains B₀ ki direction mein ghoom jaate hain, aur jo domains pehle se B₀ ki direction mein hain wo size mein badhte hain. Ye andaaza nahi hai: sample par ferromagnetic powder ka liquid suspension chhidakkar microscope mein domains ki movement dekhi ja sakti hai. Fig 5.8(b) mein domains align hokar ek “giant” domain mein mil gaye hain. Isliye ferromagnet mein field lines bahut concentrated hoti hain; non-uniform field mein sample high field ki taraf jaata hai.
Raise B₀ and watch the domains turn and grow. Then switch off the field: soft iron loses its magnetisation, a hard magnet (alnico) keeps it. Heat it up and the domain order breaks down — it becomes a paramagnet.B₀ बढ़ाएँ और डोमेन को घूमते व बढ़ते देखें। B₀ badhaaiye aur domains ko ghoomte aur badhte dekhiye. Phir field band kijiye: soft iron apna magnetisation kho deta hai, hard magnet (alnico) use rakhta hai. Ise garam kijiye to domains ka order toot jaata hai — ye paramagnet ban jaata hai.
What happens when the external field is removed? In some ferromagnets the magnetisation persists — these are hard magnetic materials (hard ferromagnets), e.g. alnico (an alloy of iron, aluminium, nickel, cobalt and copper) and naturally occurring lodestone. They make permanent magnets, used among other things as compass needles. In others, like soft iron, the magnetisation disappears when the field is removed — these are soft ferromagnetic materials. Ferromagnetic elements include iron, cobalt, nickel, gadolinium, etc., with relative permeability > 1000! Kuch ferromagnets mein magnetisation bana rehta hai — ye hard magnetic materials (hard ferromagnets) hain, jaise alnico (iron, aluminium, nickel, cobalt aur copper ki alloy) aur natural lodestone. Inse permanent magnets bante hain, jinka ek use compass needle hai. Doosron mein, jaise soft iron, field hataate hi magnetisation gaayab ho jaata hai — ye soft ferromagnetic materials hain. Ferromagnetic elements: iron, cobalt, nickel, gadolinium waghera, jinki relative permeability > 1000 hai!Hard magnets (alnico, lodestone) keep their magnetism → permanent magnets. Soft iron loses it when the field is removed.
Ferromagnetism depends on temperature. At a high enough temperature a ferromagnet becomes a paramagnet: the domain structure disintegrates with temperature, and this disappearance of magnetisation is gradual. Ferromagnetism temperature par depend karta hai. Kaafi high temperature par ferromagnet paramagnet ban jaata hai: temperature ke saath domain structure toot jaata hai, aur magnetisation ka ye gaayab hona dheere-dheere hota hai.
Beyond the book: the temperature at which a ferromagnet turns paramagnetic is called the Curie temperature. For iron it is about 1043 K (770 °C); for gadolinium only about 293 K (20 °C) — so gadolinium is ferromagnetic only when it is a little cooler than a typical room. Book se aage: jis temperature par ferromagnet paramagnet ban jaata hai use Curie temperature kehte hain. Iron ke liye ye lagbhag 1043 K (770 °C) hai; gadolinium ke liye sirf lagbhag 293 K (20 °C) — isliye gadolinium normal room se thoda thanda hone par hi ferromagnetic hota hai.
Permanent magnet or electromagnet? Substances that keep their ferromagnetism at room temperature for a long time are permanent magnets — speakers, motors, compass needles, fridge seals. Soft iron, which magnetises strongly but loses it at once, is ideal for the core of an electromagnet (cranes in scrap yards, electric bells, relays): switch the current on — strong magnet; switch it off — the load drops. Permanent magnet ya electromagnet? Jo substances room temperature par lambe samay tak ferromagnetism banaye rakhte hain wo permanent magnets hain — speakers, motors, compass needles, fridge seals. Soft iron, jo strongly magnetise hota hai par turant kho bhi deta hai, electromagnet ke core ke liye ideal hai (kabaad yard ki crane, electric bell, relay): current on — strong magnet; off — load gir jaata hai.
Points to ponder (NCERT):विचारणीय विषय (NCERT):Points to ponder (NCERT):
Magnetic monopoles do not exist: slice a magnet and you get two magnets. Electric charge, on the other hand, exists in isolation and is quantised (|e| = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C). Why monopoles do not exist, or why charge is quantised, we do not know. Magnetic monopoles nahi hote: magnet kaatiye to do magnets milte hain. Iske ulat, electric charge alag se hota hai aur quantised hai (|e| = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C). Monopoles kyun nahi hote, ya charge quantised kyun hai, ye hum nahi jaante.
Because there are no monopoles, magnetic field lines are continuous closed loops; electrostatic lines begin on + charges and end on − charges (or fade out at infinity). Monopoles na hone ki wajah se magnetic field lines continuous closed loops hain; electrostatic lines + charge se shuru hokar − charge par khatam hoti hain (ya infinity mein fade).
A tiny difference in χ gives radically different behaviour: χ ≈ −10⁻⁵ for diamagnets versus χ ≈ +10⁻⁵ for paramagnets.χ में छोटा-सा अंतर बिल्कुल अलग व्यवहार देता है: प्रतिचुंबकों के लिए χ ≈ −10⁻⁵ जबकि अनुचुंबकों के लिए χ ≈ +10⁻⁵।χ mein chhota sa fark bilkul alag behaviour deta hai: diamagnets ke liye χ ≈ −10⁻⁵ jabki paramagnets ke liye χ ≈ +10⁻⁵.
A superconductor is a perfect diamagnet (χ = −1, μᵣ = 0, μ = 0) and also a perfect conductor. No classical theory links the two; the quantum BCS theory (Bardeen, Cooper, Schrieffer, 1957) explains them; it won the 1972 Nobel Prize in Physics (some printings say 1970). Superconductor perfect diamagnet (χ = −1, μᵣ = 0, μ = 0) aur perfect conductor bhi hai. Koi classical theory dono ko nahi jodti; quantum BCS theory (Bardeen, Cooper, Schrieffer, 1957) inhe samjhaati hai; ise 1972 ka Physics Nobel Prize mila (kuch printings mein 1970 chhapa hai).
Diamagnetism is universal but weak, hard to detect in para- or ferromagnetic substances. Other kinds exist too: ferrimagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic, spin glass…
