Many halogen compounds occur in nature and some are clinically useful. Chloramphenicol, a chlorine-containing antibiotic produced by microorganisms, is very effective against typhoid fever. Our body makes the iodine-containing hormone thyroxine; its deficiency causes goitre. Synthetic halogen compounds: chloroquine treats malaria and halothane is an anaesthetic used during surgery. Certain fully fluorinated compounds are being considered as potential blood substitutes in surgery. Organohalogen compounds are also used as solvents for relatively non-polar compounds and as starting materials for making a wide range of organic compounds. Kai halogen compounds nature mein milte hain aur kuch medicine mein useful hain. Classification (vargikaran)
Haloalkanes and haloarenes are classified in two ways: by the number of halogen atoms, and (for monohalo compounds) by the hybridisation of the carbon atom to which the halogen is bonded (see the classification chart). Haloalkanes aur haloarenes ko do tarah classify karte hain: halogen atoms ki sankhya se, aur (monohalo compounds mein) us carbon atom ke hybridisation se jisse halogen juda hai (classification chart dekhiye). Two ways: how many halogens, and what kind of carbon carries the halogen.

Nomenclature (naampaddhati)
Common names of alkyl halides: name of the alkyl group + name of the halide (e.g. sec-butyl chloride). IUPAC names: halosubstituted hydrocarbons (e.g. 2-chlorobutane). For monohalogen derivatives of benzene the common and IUPAC names are the same. For dihalobenzenes, the common system uses o-, m-, p-, the IUPAC system uses the numerals 1,2-; 1,3-; 1,4-. Alkyl halides ke common names: alkyl group ka naam + halide ka naam (jaise sec-butyl chloride). IUPAC names: halo-substituted hydrocarbons (jaise 2-chlorobutane). Benzene ke monohalogen derivatives ke common aur IUPAC names same hote hain. Dihalobenzenes mein common system o-, m-, p- aur IUPAC system numbers 1,2-; 1,3-; 1,4- use karta hai.Common name = alkyl + halide; IUPAC name = halo + alkane.
Dihaloalkanes with the same halogen: geminal (gem-) dihalides have both X on the same carbon (common name: alkylidene halides, e.g. CH₃CHCl₂ ethylidene chloride); vicinal (vic-) dihalides have X on adjacent carbons (common name: alkylene dihalides, e.g. ClCH₂CH₂Cl ethylene dichloride). In IUPAC both are simply dihaloalkanes (1,1-dichloroethane; 1,2-dichloroethane). Same halogen wale dihaloalkanes: geminal (gem-) dihalides mein dono X ek hi carbon par (common name: alkylidene halides, jaise CH₃CHCl₂ ethylidene chloride); vicinal (vic-) dihalides mein X paas-paas ke carbons par (common name: alkylene dihalides, jaise ClCH₂CH₂Cl ethylene dichloride). IUPAC mein dono sirf dihaloalkanes (1,1-dichloroethane; 1,2-dichloroethane).gem = both X on one carbon; vic = X on neighbouring carbons.

6.3Nature of C–X BondC–X C–X bond ki prakriti
Halogen atoms are more electronegative than carbon, so the carbon–halogen bond is polarised: carbon carries a partial positive charge (δ+) and the halogen a partial negative charge (δ−). Going down the group the halogen atom gets bigger (F smallest, I largest), so the C–X bond length increases from C–F to C–I and the bond becomes weaker (bond data). Halogen atoms carbon se zyada electronegative hain, isliye carbon–halogen bond polarised hota hai: carbon par partial positive charge (δ+) aur halogen par partial negative charge (δ−). Group mein neeche halogen atom bada hota jata hai (F sabse chhota, I sabse bada), isliye C–X bond length C–F se C–I tak badhti hai aur bond weak hota hai (bond data).C–X is polar (Cδ+, Xδ−); from F to I the bond gets longer and weaker.

Alkyl halides are best prepared from alcohols, which are easily accessible. The –OH group is replaced by halogen using concentrated halogen acids, phosphorus halides or thionyl chloride. Thionyl chloride is preferred: the by-products SO₂ and HCl are gases that escape, leaving pure alkyl chloride. Thionyl chloride preferred hai: by-products SO₂ aur HCl gases hain jo nikal jaati hain, aur pure alkyl chloride bachta hai.R–OH → R–X with HX, PX₃, PCl₅ or SOCl₂ (best, gaseous by-products).
- Alkyl chlorides: pass dry HCl gas through the alcohol, or heat the alcohol with conc. aqueous HCl. Alkyl chlorides: alcohol mein dry HCl gas guzariye, ya alcohol ko conc. aqueous HCl ke saath garam kijiye.Dry HCl gas or hot conc. 6.4.2From Hydrocarbonsहाइड्रोकार्बनों सेHydrocarbons se
(I) From alkanes by free radical halogenation: chlorination or bromination of alkanes gives a complex mixture of isomeric mono- and polyhaloalkanes that is difficult to separate, so the yield of any single compound is low. Example: CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃ —(Cl₂, UV light or heat)→ CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂Cl + CH₃CH₂CH(Cl)CH₃.(I) (I) Alkanes se free radical halogenation: alkanes ke chlorination ya bromination se isomeric mono- aur polyhaloalkanes ka complex mixture banta hai jise alag karna mushkil hai, isliye kisi ek compound ki yield kam hoti hai. Jaise: CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃ —(Cl₂, UV light ya heat)→ CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂Cl + CH₃CH₂CH(Cl)CH₃.Free radical halogenation gives mixtures — poor method for one pure product.
(II) From alkenes — (i) addition of hydrogen halides: an alkene adds HCl, HBr or HI to give an alkyl halide, e.g. CH₂=CH₂ + HX → CH₃CH₂X. Propene gives two products, but one predominates by Markovnikov's rule: CH₃CH=CH₂ + HI → CH₃CH(I)CH₃ (major) + CH₃CH₂CH₂I (minor).(II) ऐल्कीनों से — (i) हाइड्रोजन हैलाइडों का योग: ऐल्कीन HCl, HBr या HI जोड़कर ऐल्किल हैलाइड देती है, जैसे CH₂=CH₂ + HX → CH₃CH₂X। (II) Alkenes se — (i) hydrogen halides ka addition: alkene HCl, HBr ya HI jodkar alkyl halide deti hai, jaise CH₂=CH₂ + HX → CH₃CH₂X. Propene do products deti hai par Markovnikov's rule se ek major hota hai: CH₃CH=CH₂ + HI → CH₃CH(I)CH₃ (major) + CH₃CH₂CH₂I (minor).Alkene + HX → haloalkane; H goes to the carbon that already has more H.
(ii) Addition of halogens: in the laboratory, adding bromine in CCl₄ to an alkene discharges the reddish-brown colour of bromine — an important test for a double bond. The product is a colourless vic-dibromide: CH₂=CH₂ + Br₂ —(CCl₄)→ BrCH₂–CH₂Br (1,2-dibromoethane).(ii) (ii) Halogens ka addition: lab mein CCl₄ mein ghula bromine alkene mein milane par bromine ka reddish-brown rang ud jata hai — ye double bond ka important test hai. Product colourless vic-dibromide hai: CH₂=CH₂ + Br₂ —(CCl₄)→ BrCH₂–CH₂Br (1,2-dibromoethane).Br₂ water/CCl₄ decolourises → C=C present.

(i) From hydrocarbons by electrophilic substitution: aryl chlorides and bromides are easily made from arenes with chlorine or bromine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst such as iron or iron(III) chloride. From toluene: C₆H₅CH₃ —(X₂, Fe, dark)→ 2-halotoluene + 4-halotoluene. The ortho and para isomers separate easily because their melting points are very different.(i) Arene + Cl₂/Br₂ with Fe or FeCl₃ → aryl halide.
- Iodination is reversible and needs an oxidising agent (HNO₃, HIO₄) to oxidise the HI formed. Fluoro compounds are not made this way — fluorine is far too reactive. Iodination reversible hai aur bane HI ko oxidise karne ke liye oxidising agent (HNO₃, HIO₄) chahiye. Fluoro compounds is tarah nahi banate — fluorine bahut zyada reactive hai.I₂ needs an oxidiser; F₂ is too violent.

Melting and boiling points. Methyl chloride, methyl bromide, ethyl chloride and some chlorofluoromethanes are gases at room temperature; higher members are liquids or solids. Organic halogen compounds are polar, and compared with the parent hydrocarbon they have greater polarity and higher molecular mass, so the intermolecular forces (dipole–dipole and van der Waals) are stronger. Solubility. Haloalkanes are very slightly soluble in water. To dissolve, energy is needed to overcome the attractions between haloalkane molecules and to break the hydrogen bonds between water molecules; less energy is released when the new haloalkane–water attractions form, because they are not as strong as the original hydrogen bonds. In organic solvents they dissolve well, because the new attractions are of much the same strength as those broken. Solubility. Groups like cyanide and nitrite have two nucleophilic centres and are called ambident nucleophiles. Cyanide is a hybrid of two structures [⁻:C≡N: ↔ :C=N:⁻], so it can link through carbon (giving alkyl cyanides) or through nitrogen (giving isocyanides). Similarly the nitrite ion [⁻O–N=O] links through oxygen (alkyl nitrites) or through nitrogen (nitroalkanes). Cyanide aur nitrite jaise groups mein do nucleophilic centres hote hain; inhe ambident nucleophiles kehte hain. As the new C–O bond begins to form, the C–Cl bond weakens, and the three C–H bonds move away from the attacking nucleophile. In the transition state all three C–H bonds lie in one plane, and the attacking and leaving groups are both partially attached — carbon is bonded to five atoms at once; such a structure is unstable and cannot be isolated. Bond-making and bond-breaking happen simultaneously in a single step; no intermediate forms. Finally the configuration of the carbon is inverted, just as an umbrella turns inside out in a strong wind — inversion of configuration. (i) Optical activity. Ordinary light passed through a Nicol prism becomes plane polarised (it vibrates in one plane only). When this light passes through solutions of certain compounds, its plane is rotated; such compounds are optically active. The angle of rotation is measured with a polarimeter. Rotation to the right (clockwise) → dextrorotatory, the d-form, sign (+); rotation to the left (anticlockwise) → laevorotatory, the l-form, sign (−). Such (+) and (−) isomers are optical isomers, and the phenomenon is optical isomerism.(i) प्रकाशिक सक्रियता। (i) Optical activity. Louis Pasteur (1848) noticed that crystals of certain compounds exist as mirror images; solutions of the two kinds of crystals rotated light equally but in opposite directions. In 1874 J. Van't Hoff (Dutch) and C. Le Bel (French) independently argued that the four groups around carbon are arranged tetrahedrally; if all four are different, the molecule's mirror image cannot be superimposed on it. Such a carbon is an asymmetric carbon or stereocentre, and the molecule is asymmetric. A sphere, a cube or a cone is identical to its mirror image; your left and right hands are not. Objects that are non-superimposable on their mirror images are chiral (property: chirality) — chiral molecules are optically active. Aur chiral examples: 2-chlorobutane, 2,3-dihydroxypropanal (OHC–CHOH–CH₂OH), bromochloroiodomethane (BrClCHI), 2-bromopropanoic acid (H₃C–CHBr–COOH).Propan-2-ol achiral, butan-2-ol chiral.
Stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images are enantiomers. They have identical physical properties (m.p., b.p., refractive index …) and differ only in the direction of rotation of plane polarised light: if one is dextrorotatory, the other is laevorotatory. The sign of rotation is not necessarily related to the absolute (actual) configuration. A mixture of the two enantiomers in equal proportions has zero rotation — a racemic mixture (racemic modification), written with dl or (±), e.g. (±)-butan-2-ol. Converting an enantiomer into a racemic mixture is racemisation. Jo stereoisomers non-superimposable mirror images hon, woh enantiomers hain. Inki physical properties same (m.p., b.p., refractive index …) hoti hain aur ye sirf plane polarised light ke rotation ki direction mein alag hain: ek dextrorotatory ho to doosra laevorotatory. Dono enantiomers ke barabar mixture ka rotation zero hota hai — racemic mixture (racemic modification), dl ya (±) lagakar likhte hain, jaise (±)-butan-2-ol. Enantiomer ko racemic mixture mein badalna racemisation hai.Enantiomers: same properties, opposite rotation; 50:50 mix = racemic, zero rotation.
(iii) Retention. Retention of configuration is the preservation of the spatial arrangement of bonds to an asymmetric centre during a reaction. If no bond to the stereocentre is broken, the product keeps the same configuration. Example: (−)-2-methylbutan-1-ol heated with conc. HCl gives (+)-1-chloro-2-methylbutane — the C–O bond broken is not on the stereocentre, so the configuration is retained, yet the sign of rotation changes: two different compounds with the same configuration can rotate light in opposite directions.(iii) धारण। (iii) Retention. Retention of configuration reaction ke dauran asymmetric centre se jude bonds ki spatial arrangement ka bane rehna hai. Agar stereocentre se juda koi bond nahi tootta, to product ka configuration wahi rehta hai. Jaise: (−)-2-methylbutan-1-ol ko conc. HCl ke saath garam karne par (+)-1-chloro-2-methylbutane — tootne wala C–O bond stereocentre par nahi hai, isliye configuration bana rehta hai, phir bhi rotation ka sign badal jata hai: same configuration wale do alag compounds light ko opposite directions mein ghuma sakte hain.No bond to the stereocentre broken → retention (sign of rotation may still change).
(iv) Inversion, retention and racemisation. When a bond directly linked to an asymmetric carbon is broken and X is replaced by Y, there are three outcomes. Only the product with the same configuration → retention. Only the product with the opposite configuration → inversion. A 50 : 50 mixture of the two → racemisation (optically inactive product).(iv) (iv) Inversion, retention aur racemisation. Jab asymmetric carbon se seedha juda bond tootta hai aur X ki jagah Y aata hai, to teen results possible hain. Sirf same configuration wala product → retention. Sirf opposite configuration wala product → inversion. Dono ka 50 : 50 mixture → racemisation (optically inactive product).Same → retention; opposite → inversion; 50:50 → racemisation.
SN2 → inversion. The nucleophile attaches on the side opposite the halogen, so optically active halides give products with inverted configuration: (−)-2-bromooctane + NaOH → (+)-octan-2-ol, the –OH taking the position opposite to where Br had been. SN1 → racemisation. The carbocation formed in the slow step is sp² hybridised and planar (achiral); the nucleophile can attack from either face, giving one product with the same configuration and one with the opposite. Hydrolysis of optically active 2-bromobutane gives (±)-butan-2-ol (see all three cases).SN2 → प्रतिलोमन। SN2 → inversion. Nucleophile halogen ke opposite side se judta hai, isliye optically active halides inverted configuration wale products dete hain: (−)-2-bromooctane + NaOH → (+)-octan-2-ol, –OH us jagah ke opposite jahan Br tha. SN1 → racemisation. Slow step mein bana carbocation sp² hybridised aur planar (achiral) hai; nucleophile kisi bhi face se attack kar sakta hai, jisse ek product same configuration wala aur ek opposite configuration wala banta hai. Optically active 2-bromobutane ka hydrolysis (±)-butan-2-ol deta hai (teeno cases dekhiye).SN2 inverts; SN1 racemises (planar carbocation).

When a haloalkane with a β-hydrogen is heated with alcoholic KOH, H is removed from the β-carbon and X from the α-carbon, giving an alkene. (The carbon carrying the halogen is the α-carbon; the carbon next to it is the β-carbon.) Because a β-H is involved, it is called β-elimination (dehydrohalogenation). Jab β-hydrogen wale haloalkane ko alcoholic KOH ke saath garam karte hain, to β-carbon se H aur α-carbon se X nikalkar alkene banti hai. Most organic chlorides, bromides and iodides react with certain metals to give compounds with carbon–metal bonds — organometallic compounds. An important class, discovered by Victor Grignard in 1900, is the alkyl magnesium halides RMgX, the Grignard reagents, made from a haloalkane and magnesium in dry ether. In RMgX the C–Mg bond is covalent but highly polar (carbon pulls electrons from electropositive Mg); the Mg–X bond is essentially ionic. Zyada tar organic chlorides, bromides aur iodides kuch metals se react karke carbon–metal bond wale compounds — organometallic compounds — dete hain. Grignard reagents are highly reactive and react with any source of proton to give hydrocarbons — even water, alcohols and amines are acidic enough. So even traces of moisture must be avoided; that is why the reaction is carried out in dry ether. Seen the other way, this is a method of converting halides into hydrocarbons. Grignard reagents bahut reactive hain aur kisi bhi proton source se react karke hydrocarbons dete hain — paani, alcohols aur amines bhi kaafi acidic hain. 1. Nucleophilic substitution. Nucleophilic substitution. Aryl halides nucleophilic substitution ke prati bahut hi kam reactive hain, chaar kaarano se:Aryl halides hardly undergo nucleophilic substitution.
- (i) Resonance effect: the lone pairs on the halogen are in conjugation with the π-electrons of the ring; the C–Cl bond acquires partial double bond character, so it is harder to break than in a haloalkane (resonance structures I–V).(i) अनुनाद प्रभाव: हैलोजन के एकाकी युग्म वलय के π-इलेक्ट्रॉनों से संयुग्मन में हैं; C–Cl बंध में आंशिक द्विबंध गुण आ जाता है, इसलिए यह हैलोऐल्केन की तुलना में तोड़ना कठिन है (अनुनादी संरचनाएँ I–V)।(i) Resonance effect: halogen ke lone pairs ring ke π-electrons se conjugation mein hain; C–Cl bond mein partial double bond character aa jata hai, isliye ise haloalkane ke comparison mein todna mushkil hai (resonance structures I–V).C–Cl gets partial double-bond character.
- (ii) Different hybridisation: in a haloarene the carbon bonded to X is sp² (more s-character, more electronegative) and holds the bond pair more tightly than the sp³ carbon of a haloalkane. C–Cl bond length: 177 pm in haloalkane, 169 pm in haloarene — a shorter bond is harder to break.(ii) (ii) Alag hybridisation: haloarene mein X se juda carbon sp² (zyada s-character, zyada electronegative) hai aur haloalkane ke sp³ carbon se zyada kaske bond pair pakadta hai. C–Cl bond length: haloalkane mein 177 pm, haloarene mein 169 pm — chhota bond todna mushkil.sp² carbon → shorter, stronger C–X.
- (iii) Instability of the phenyl cation: a phenyl cation formed by self-ionisation is not stabilised by resonance, so the SN1 mechanism is ruled out.(iii) No stable phenyl cation → no SN1.

Ortho aur para positions par electron-withdrawing –NO₂ reactivity bahut badha deta hai; meta position par –NO₂ ka koi effect nahi.Plain chlorobenzene needs 623 K/300 atm; o/p-NO₂ makes it much easier.
Why only ortho and para? The –NO₂ group at o- and p-positions withdraws electron density from the ring and helps the nucleophile attack. The carbanion formed is stabilised by resonance: the negative charge appears at the positions ortho and para to the halogen, and when –NO₂ sits there the charge can spread onto the nitro group. With meta-NO₂, none of the resonance structures puts the negative charge on the carbon bearing –NO₂, so it gives no stabilisation and has no effect on reactivity (step through it). Sirf ortho aur para kyun? o- aur p-positions par –NO₂ ring se electron density kheenchkar nucleophile ke attack mein madad karta hai. Bana carbanion resonance se stable hota hai: negative charge halogen ke relative ortho aur para positions par aata hai, aur wahan –NO₂ ho to charge nitro group par fail jaata hai. Meta-NO₂ mein koi bhi resonance structure negative charge ko –NO₂ wale carbon par nahi laati, isliye koi stabilisation nahi aur reactivity par koi effect nahi (step by step dekhiye).o/p-NO₂ can hold the negative charge of the intermediate; m-NO₂ cannot.

6.8.2Trichloromethane (Chloroform)ट्राइक्लोरोमेथेन (क्लोरोफ़ॉर्म)Trichloromethane (chloroform)
A solvent for fats, alkaloids, iodine and other substances. Major use today: making the freon refrigerant R-22. It was once a general anaesthetic in surgery, now replaced by less toxic, safer anaesthetics such as ether. Inhaling its vapours depresses the central nervous system; about 900 ppm in air for a short time causes dizziness, fatigue and headache. Chronic exposure may damage the liver (where chloroform is metabolised to phosgene) and the kidneys. Chloroform is slowly oxidised by air in light to phosgene (carbonyl chloride), an extremely poisonous gas, so it is stored in closed, dark coloured, completely filled bottles to keep air out. Fats, alkaloids, iodine aadi ka solvent. Produced in large quantities for making refrigerants and aerosol propellants, as a feedstock for chlorofluorocarbons and other chemicals, in pharmaceutical manufacture and as a general solvent. Until the mid-1960s it was a cleaning fluid (degreaser, spot remover) and fire extinguisher. There is some evidence that exposure causes liver cancer; common effects are dizziness, light-headedness, nausea and vomiting, which can permanently damage nerve cells; severe cases can lead to stupor, coma, unconsciousness or death. It can make the heart beat irregularly or stop, and may irritate the eyes. Released into air, it rises into the atmosphere and depletes the ozone layer, increasing human exposure to UV rays → more skin cancer, eye diseases and possible disruption of the immune system. Refrigerants aur aerosol propellants banane, chlorofluorocarbons aur doosre chemicals ke feedstock, dawai banane aur general solvent ke liye badi matra mein banaya jata hai. 1960s ke beech tak ye cleaning fluid (degreaser, spot remover) aur fire extinguisher tha. Kuch saboot hain ki iske exposure se liver cancer hota hai; aam effects chakkar, sir halka lagna, matli aur ulti, jinse nerve cells ko permanent nuksan ho sakta hai; serious case mein stupor, coma, behoshi ya maut. Ye heart beat irregular ya band kar sakta hai aur aankhon mein jalan kar sakta hai. Hawa mein chhodne par ye atmosphere mein upar jaakar ozone layer ko kam karta hai, jisse insaan par UV rays zyada padti hain → zyada skin cancer, eye diseases aur immune system mein possible gadbad.CCl₄: solvent, CFC feedstock; liver damage; destroys ozone.
Freons
The chlorofluorocarbon compounds of methane and ethane are collectively called freons. They are extremely stable, unreactive, non-toxic, non-corrosive and easily liquefiable gases. Freon 12 (CCl₂F₂) is one of the most common; it is made from tetrachloromethane by the Swarts reaction. Freons are used as aerosol propellants and in refrigeration and air conditioning; by 1974 world production was about 2 billion pounds a year. Most freon eventually reaches the atmosphere and diffuses unchanged into the stratosphere, where it can initiate radical chain reactions that upset the natural ozone balance. Methane aur ethane ke chlorofluorocarbon compounds milkar freons kehlate hain. Ye bahut stable, unreactive, non-toxic, non-corrosive aur aasani se liquefy hone wali gases hain. Freon 12 (CCl₂F₂) sabse common mein se ek hai; ye tetrachloromethane se Swarts reaction se banta hai. Freons aerosol propellants aur refrigeration aur AC mein use hote hain; 1974 tak world production lagbhag 2 billion pounds per year tha. Zyada tar freon aakhir mein atmosphere mein pahunchkar bina badle stratosphere mein diffuse hota hai, jahan ye radical chain reactions shuru karke natural ozone balance bigaad sakta hai.Freons are stable CFCs; in the stratosphere they damage ozone.
6.8.6p,p′-Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)p,p′-डाइक्लोरोडाइफ़ेनिलट्राइक्लोरोएथेन (DDT)p,p′-Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)
DDT, the first chlorinated organic insecticide, was first prepared in 1873, but only in 1939 did Paul Müller of Geigy Pharmaceuticals (Switzerland) discover its effectiveness as an insecticide; he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1948. After World War II its use grew enormously, mainly against the mosquito that spreads malaria and the lice that carry typhus. Problems appeared from the late 1940s: many insects developed resistance, it is highly toxic to fish, and being chemically stable and fat-soluble it is not metabolised quickly — it is stored in fatty tissues and builds up over time. DDT was banned in the United States in 1973, although it is still used in some other parts of the world.DDT, DDT, pehla chlorinated organic insecticide, 1873 mein pehli baar banaya gaya, par 1939 mein hi Switzerland ki Geigy Pharmaceuticals ke Paul Müller ne insecticide ke roop mein iska effect khoja; unhe 1948 mein Medicine aur Physiology ka Nobel Prize mila. World War II ke baad iska use bahut badha, mainly malaria phailane wale machchhar aur typhus phailane wali joon ke khilaaf. 1940s ke end se problems dikhi: kai insects mein resistance aa gaya, ye machhliyon ke liye bahut toxic hai, aur chemically stable aur fat-soluble hone se jaldi metabolise nahi hota — fatty tissues mein jama hokar samay ke saath badhta hai. DDT par 1973 mein USA mein ban laga, haalaanki duniya ke kuch doosre hisson mein ye ab bhi use hota hai.DDT worked against malaria mosquitoes but builds up in fat; banned in the USA in 1973.
