Parts and what they mean
- Bromine in a solvent of low polarity (CS₂ / CHCl₃) at low temperature
- Phenol + bromine water (फ़ीनॉल + ब्रोमीन जल) — All three activated positions (2, 4, 6) are substituted.
- 2,4,6-Tribromophenol (2,4,6-ट्राइब्रोमोफ़ीनॉल) — C₆H₅OH + 3Br₂ → C₆H₂Br₃OH + 3HBr.
- White precipitate + 3HBr (श्वेत अवक्षेप + 3HBr) — The white precipitate is a quick test for phenol.
- Why no Lewis acid is needed (लूइस अम्ल क्यों नहीं चाहिए) — Highly activated ring polarises the bromine molecule.
