All living things are made of cells. Some organisms are unicellular (bacteria, yeast); others are multicellular (plants, fish, humans). Similar cells form tissues → tissues form organs → organs form organ systems (e.g. nasal cavity, trachea and lungs form the respiratory system). The cell stays the basic unit of structure and function. Did life begin in hot water? Some scientists think life began in small hot pools like the Puga Valley hot springs in Ladakh, where heat-loving bacteria (thermophiles) live and calcium carbonate deposits may have protected early molecules. Saare jeev cells se bane hain. Kuch jeev unicellular hain (bacteria, yeast); kuch multicellular (paudhe, machhli, insaan). Same cells tissues banati hain → tissues organs → organs organ systems (jaise nasal cavity, trachea aur lungs milkar respiratory system). Cell hi structure aur function ki basic unit rehti hai. Kya jeevan garam paani mein shuru hua? Kuch scientists maante hain ki jeevan Ladakh ki Puga Valley ke garam jharnon jaise chhote garam pools mein shuru hua, jahan heat-loving bacteria (thermophiles) rehte hain.

2.1How to study cells?

The limit of resolution of the human eye is about 0.1 mm: from 25 cm (near point), two dots closer than 0.1 mm look like one. Most cells (10–100 µm) are smaller, so we need a microscope — a convex lens or a combination (objective + eyepiece) that magnifies. Robert Hooke (1665) looked at a thin slice of cork with his own microscope (about 200–300X) and named the box-like compartments “cells”. Insaani aankh ki limit of resolution lagbhag 0.1 mm hai: 25 cm (near point) se 0.1 mm se paas ke do dots ek dikhte hain. Zyada-tar cells (10–100 µm) isse chhote hain, isliye microscope chahiye — convex lens ya lenses ka combination (objective + eyepiece) jo magnify karta hai. Robert Hooke (1665) ne apne banaye microscope (lagbhag 200–300X) se cork ki patli slice dekhi aur dibbe jaise khaanon ko “cells” naam diya.

Activity 2.1 — estimate the size of a cell. Put a transparent mm ruler on the stage and measure the diameter of the field of view, say 5 mm = 5000 µm. Replace it with an onion peel slide and count the cells across the diameter, say 25. Activity 2.1 — cell ke size ka estimate. Microscopes improved in three features: resolution (clarity), contrast (difference in brightness between parts) and magnification. An electron microscope uses a beam of electrons instead of light and shows cell details at the nanometre scale (1 nm = one-billionth of a metre) — e.g. stomata on a Colocasia leaf (Fig 2.4). Microscopes teen cheezon mein better hue: resolution (clarity), contrast (parts ki chamak ka fark) aur magnification. Electron microscope light ki jagah electrons ka beam use karta hai aur nanometre level tak (1 nm = metre ka ek arabwaan hissa) cell dikhata hai — jaise Colocasia patti ke stomata (Fig 2.4).

2.2Structure of a cellकोशिका की संरचनाCell ki structure

2.2.1Cell membrane — the universal feature of a cellकोशिका झिल्ली — हर कोशिका की विशेषताCell membrane — har cell ki pehchaan

The cell membrane (plasma membrane) is a thin boundary around every cell; it protects the contents and gives the cell its individuality. It is selectively permeable — it lets some substances pass and blocks others. Cell membrane (plasma membrane) har cell ke chaaron taraf patli boundary hai; ye andar ki cheezon ko bachati hai aur cell ko alag pehchaan deti hai. Ye selectively permeable hai — kuch substances ko jaane deti hai, kuch ko rokti hai.

Activity 2.2 — potato in water vs salt solutionTwo equal potato pieces are weighed. Beaker A (plain water): the piece swells and gains weight. Beaker B (20% salt or sugar solution): it shrinks and loses weight. The membrane lets water pass but not salt/sugar. Water moves from a dilute solution (more water, less solute) to a concentrated one until concentrations become equal. Activity 2.2 — paani vs namak ke ghol mein aalooDo barabar aaloo ke tukde taule jaate hain. Beaker A (saada paani): tukda phoolta hai, weight badhta hai. Beaker B (20% namak ya cheeni ka ghol): sikudta hai, weight ghatta hai. Membrane paani ko jaane deti hai par namak/cheeni ko nahi.

A cell in different solutions (see diagram): isotonic (outside solute = inside) → no net change; hypotonic (outside solute < inside) → water enters, cell swells; hypertonic (outside solute > inside) → water leaves, cell shrinks. Alag gholon mein cell (diagram dekhiye): isotonic (bahar solute = andar) → koi net badlaav nahi; hypotonic (bahar solute < andar) → paani andar, cell phoolti hai; hypertonic (bahar solute > andar) → paani bahar, cell sikudti hai.

Structure — the fluid-mosaic model: the membrane is only 7–10 nm thick, made of lipids and proteins. 2.2.2Cell wall — the outer covering of cellsकोशिका भित्ति — कोशिकाओं का बाहरी आवरणCell wall — cells ka bahari cover

Plants cannot move, so their cells have a rigid cell wall outside the membrane to withstand wind and rain, keep leaves and flowers firm and help plants stay upright. The wall is rigid but permeable — water and minerals pass through it. In concentrated solution the cell loses water but keeps its shape because of the wall; the membrane pulls away from the wall. The wall is mainly cellulose (many glucose units linked) — in our diet cellulose is roughage. Fungi and bacteria also have cell walls. Animal cells have no wall, so they change shape easily — useful for movement. Paudhe chal nahi sakte, isliye unki cells mein membrane ke bahar sakht cell wall hoti hai jo hawa-baarish sehti hai, pattiyon-phoolon ko firm rakhti hai aur paudhe ko seedha rakhti hai. Wall sakht par permeable hai — paani aur minerals isse guzarte hain. Concentrated ghol mein cell paani khoti hai par wall ki wajah se shape bani rehti hai; membrane wall se alag ho jaati hai. Wall mainly cellulose (kai glucose units) se bani hai — khane mein cellulose roughage hai. Fungi aur bacteria mein bhi wall hoti hai. Animal cell mein wall nahi, isliye wo aasaani se shape badalti hai.

Threads of CuriosityRBCs without a nucleus: mature human red blood cells are enucleate — more room for haemoglobin to carry oxygen, but they cannot repair or divide and live only about 120 days. Synthetic DNA (2010): J. Craig Venter’s team made a copy of the DNA of the bacterium Mycoplasma mycoides in the lab and put it into another bacterium whose own DNA was removed; the cell grew and divided by the new DNA — showing DNA controls the cell (only the DNA was synthetic, not the whole cell). Curiosity ke dhaageBina nucleus ki RBC: insaan ki mature red blood cells enucleate hoti hain — oxygen le jaane wale haemoglobin ke liye zyada jagah, par wo repair ya divide nahi kar sakti aur lagbhag 120 din jeeti hain. 2.4How do normal cells grow and divide?

Cuts heal and hair grows back because cells divide to replace old, dead or damaged cells. Cells grow only up to a certain size; the body grows mainly because cells divide. In Activity 2.5 onion root tips (grown in water 5–6 days) are fixed in aceto-alcohol (acetic acid : ethanol = 1 : 3), softened with dilute HCl, stained with aceto-carmine and squashed — cells show different stages of division because the root tip divides continuously. About 1% of our body’s cells (hundreds of billions) are replaced every day. Eukaryotic cells divide in an orderly way called the cell cycle. Ghaav bharte hain aur baal phir ugte hain kyunki cells divide hokar purani, mari ya damaged cells ki jagah leti hain. Science and society — cell cultureCells can be grown outside the body in a nutrient-rich medium under sterile conditions with the right temperature, pH and moisture — cell culture. It is used to study cells and to produce biochemicals, food, medicines and vaccines. Indian scientist Arun Kumar Sharma is known for his work on chromosomes (Padma Bhushan). Science aur samaaj — cell cultureCells ko body ke bahar nutrient-rich medium mein, sterile condition mein sahi temperature, pH aur nami ke saath ugaya ja sakta hai — cell culture. 2.5Cell theory — the unifying principle of biologyकोशिका सिद्धांत — जीव विज्ञान का एकीकरण सिद्धांतCell theory — biology ka unifying principle

Schleiden (1838): all plants are made of cells. Schwann (1839): all animals too. Virchow (1855): new cells form only from pre-existing cells. Classical cell theory: (1) all living organisms are made of one or more cells; (2) the cell is the basic unit of structure and function; (3) all cells arise from pre-existing cells. Haberlandt (1902) proposed that any living plant cell can grow into a whole plant with the right nutrients — totipotency, the basis of plant tissue culture. Schleiden (1838): saare paudhe cells se bane hain. Schwann (1839): saare jaanwar bhi. Virchow (1855): nayi cells sirf pehle se maujood cells se banti hain. Classical cell theory: (1) saare jeev ek ya zyada cells se bane hain; (2) cell structure aur function ki basic unit hai; (3) saari cells pehle ki cells se banti hain. Haberlandt (1902) ne kaha ki koi bhi zinda plant cell sahi nutrients se poora paudha ban sakti hai — totipotency, jo plant tissue culture ka aadhaar hai.

2.5.1Do cells grow and reproduce forever?

Every cell has a definite life span: it grows and divides in a controlled way, works, and dies when no longer needed. In many animal cells division stops when they touch neighbours — contact inhibition. Cancer cells lose this control and form tumours (benign or malignant; malignant ones can spread). Plant cells, with rigid walls, do not show contact inhibition. Programmed cell death (PCD) removes cells on purpose — e.g. cells between fingers in an embryo (otherwise webbed hands). Har cell ka fixed life span hota hai: controlled tareeke se badhna-batna, kaam karna aur zaroorat na rehne par marna. Kai animal cells mein padosi cells ko chhoote hi division ruk jaata hai — contact inhibition. Cancer cells ye control kho deti hain aur tumours banati hain (benign ya malignant; malignant phail sakte hain). Sakht wall wali plant cells mein contact inhibition nahi hota. Programmed cell death (PCD) jaan-boojhkar cells hatata hai — jaise embryo mein ungliyon ke beech ki cells (warna jaalidaar haath).

⚠ Common mistakes⚠ आम गलतियाँ⚠ Common mistakes

  • Saying salt/sugar moves into the cell in osmosis. Only water moves across the membrane. Ye kehna ki osmosis mein namak/cheeni cell mein jaate hain. Membrane se sirf paani jaata hai.
  • Mixing up hypotonic and hypertonic. Hypo = less solute outside → water in → swells. Hypotonic aur hypertonic mein confusion. Hypo = bahar kam solute → paani andar → phoolna.
  • Calling the cell wall selectively permeable. The wall is fully permeable; the membrane is selectively permeable. Cell wall ko selectively permeable kehna. Wall fully permeable; membrane selectively permeable.
  • Saying bacteria have no DNA or no ribosomes. They have DNA (in a nucleoid) and ribosomes — only no nuclear membrane and no membrane-bound organelles. DNA (nucleoid mein) aur ribosomes hote hain — bas nuclear membrane aur membrane-bound organelles nahi.
  • Thinking roots have no plastids. Roots have leucoplasts (store starch) though no chloroplasts. Ye sochna ki roots mein plastids nahi. Roots mein chloroplasts nahi par leucoplasts (starch store) hote hain.
  • Writing meiosis gives 2 cells. Meiosis = two divisions → 4 cells with half the chromosomes. Likhna ki meiosis se 2 cells banti hain. Meiosis = do divisions → aadhe chromosomes wali 4 cells.

Pause and Ponder 1. What argument would you give for the necessity of a cell wall in plants, usually fixed in one place, versus animals, usually moving? Ek jagah tike paudhon mein aur chalne-phirne wale jaanwaron mein cell wall ki zaroorat par aap kya tark denge?
A plant cannot move away from wind, rain or animals, so it needs a rigid wall to support itself, stay upright, keep leaves firm and not burst when water enters. Animals move — their cells must be flexible to change shape (muscle, blood cells), and they have skeletons for support, so a rigid wall would be a hindrance. Paudha hawa, baarish ya jaanwaron se hat nahi sakta, isliye use support, seedha khade rehne, pattiyan firm rakhne aur paani bharne par na phatne ke liye sakht wall chahiye. Jaanwar chalte hain — unki cells ko shape badalne ke liye flexible hona chahiye (muscle, blood cells), aur support ke liye skeleton hota hai; sakht wall rukawat banti.
Pause and Ponder 2. What would happen to a plant cell if its cell wall became as flexible as a cell membrane? Agar plant cell ki wall cell membrane jitni flexible ho jaaye to kya hoga?
The cell would lose its fixed shape; in dilute water it could swell too much and burst; it could not stay firm, so leaves and stems would droop/wilt and the plant could not stand upright or withstand wind and rain. Cell ki fixed shape nahi rahegi; dilute paani mein zyada phoolkar phat sakti hai; firm nahi rahegi, isliye pattiyan aur tane jhuk/murjha jaayenge aur paudha seedha nahi khada reh paayega.
Pause and Ponder 3. Why must the two potato pieces be of roughly equal size and weighed before placing them in the liquids? Aaloo ke dono tukde lagbhag barabar kyun hon aur gholon mein rakhne se pehle unka weight kyun naapein?
For a fair test: equal size means equal surface area and starting conditions, so only the liquid is different. The initial weight is needed to calculate the change (final − initial) and show water gained or lost. Fair test ke liye: barabar size = barabar surface aur starting condition, taaki sirf ghol alag ho. Initial weight se change (final − initial) nikalta hai jo paani ka aana-jaana batata hai.
Pause and Ponder 4. Do white flowers contain any pigment? Give reasons. Pause and Ponder 4. Kya safed phoolon mein koi pigment hota hai? Kaaran dijiye.
Generally no coloured pigment — the petal cells have colourless leucoplasts instead of chromoplasts. They look white because they reflect all colours of light (air spaces between cells scatter light). Aam taur par koi rangeen pigment nahi — petal cells mein chromoplasts ki jagah rangheen leucoplasts hote hain. Safed dikhte hain kyunki light ke saare rang reflect karte hain (cells ke beech hawa ki jagah light bikherti hai).
Pause and Ponder 5. Draw a labelled schematic diagram of a plant or animal cell (nucleus dark and round; ER a network extended from the nuclear envelope; mitochondria and chloroplasts rod-shaped). Pause and Ponder 5. Plant ya animal cell ka labelled schematic diagram banaiye (nucleus gehra aur gol; ER nuclear envelope se phaila jaal; mitochondria aur chloroplast rod-shaped).
Use the tappable plant cell / animal cell diagrams as a guide. Plant cell labels: cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, nucleolus, ER, ribosomes, Golgi body, mitochondria, chloroplasts, large central vacuole. Animal cell: no wall, no chloroplast, small vacuoles, lysosomes. Tap wale plant cell / animal cell diagrams se madad lijiye. Plant cell labels: cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, nucleolus, ER, ribosomes, Golgi body, mitochondria, chloroplasts, badi central vacuole. Animal cell: wall aur chloroplast nahi, chhoti vacuoles, lysosomes.
Pause and Ponder 6. Why does a cell have many small mitochondria instead of one giant one? How does this relate to surface area? Cell mein ek bade mitochondrion ki jagah kai chhote kyun hote hain? Iska surface area se kya sambandh hai?
Many small mitochondria have a much larger total surface area (and more cristae) than one big one of the same volume, so more reactions and faster exchange of materials happen. They can also be spread through the cell, close to where energy is needed, and one damaged mitochondrion does not stop all energy supply. Utne hi volume ke liye kai chhote mitochondria ka total surface area (aur cristae) ek bade se bahut zyada hota hai, isliye zyada reactions aur tez exchange. Ye poori cell mein phailkar energy ki zaroorat wali jagah ke paas rehte hain, aur ek kharab hone se poori energy supply nahi rukti.
Pause and Ponder 7. If skin cells divided by meiosis instead of mitosis, what would happen to a cut on the skin? Agar skin cells mitosis ki jagah meiosis se divide hon to skin ke cut ka kya hoga?
New cells would have half the chromosomes and would not be identical to the old ones, so they could not work as normal skin cells; the cut would not heal properly, and the chromosome number would keep halving with each division. Nayi cells mein aadhe chromosomes honge aur wo purani jaisi nahi hongi, isliye normal skin cell ka kaam nahi kar paayengi; cut theek se nahi bharega, aur har division mein chromosome number aadha hota jaayega.
What if … soaked mung bean seeds (12 h in water) are then kept in a concentrated solution?
The solution is hypertonic; water moves out of the seed cells by osmosis, so the swollen seeds shrink and wrinkle (and may not sprout).

6. How are mitochondria and chloroplasts structurally and functionally similar and different?6. Mitochondria aur chloroplast structure aur function mein kaise same aur alag hain?
Similar: both have a double membrane, their own DNA and ribosomes, make some proteins, and both deal with energy. Different: mitochondria have inner membrane folded into cristae and release energy from food (respiration, ATP) in almost all eukaryotic cells; chloroplasts have chlorophyll discs in stroma and trap light energy to make food (photosynthesis), only in green plant cells/algae. Same: dono mein double membrane, apna DNA aur ribosomes, kuch proteins banate hain, dono energy se jude. Do same gaajar: A saade paani mein, B concentrated namak ghol mein, 24 ghante baad. (i) Hypothesis? (ii) Sudhaar? (iii) A sakht-kurkuri aur B rubber jaisi dheeli kyun?
(i) “Water moves into or out of plant cells by osmosis depending on the concentration of the surrounding solution.” (ii) Weigh/measure the carrots before and after, use several carrots per beaker (repeat), equal volumes, same temperature, and add a series of salt concentrations. (iii) In plain water (hypotonic) cells gain water, vacuoles swell and press on walls → stiff. In salt solution (hypertonic) cells lose water, vacuoles shrink, membrane pulls away from wall → limp.(i) “पादप कोशिकाओं में जल का आना-जाना आसपास के विलयन की सांद्रता पर निर्भर परासरण से होता है।” (i) “Plant cells mein paani ka aana-jaana aas-paas ke ghol ke concentration par nirbhar osmosis se hota hai.” (ii) Pehle aur baad mein weight/length naapein, har beaker mein kai gaajar (repeat), barabar volume, same temperature, aur namak ke kai concentrations. (iii) Saade paani (hypotonic) mein cells paani leti hain, vacuole phoolkar wall par dabaav → sakht. Namak (hypertonic) mein cells paani khoti hain, vacuole sikudti, membrane wall se hatti → dheeli.

(i) Sugar/salt make a concentrated solution inside the cup; water from the beaker moves through the living potato cells into the hollow by osmosis. (ii) A is the control — it shows water does not gather without a solute, so the effect is due to sugar/salt. (iii) A has no concentration difference. In D, boiling kills the cells; their membranes no longer act as selectively permeable membranes, so osmosis does not occur.(i) (i) Cheeni/namak cup mein concentrated ghol banate hain; beaker ka paani zinda aaloo cells se hokar osmosis se gaddhe mein aata hai. (ii) A control hai — bina solute ke paani jama nahi hota, isliye asar cheeni/namak ka hai. (iii) A mein concentration ka fark nahi. D mein ubaalne se cells mar jaati hain; membranes selectively permeable nahi rehti, osmosis nahi hota.

(ii) SER makes lipids (fats) and hormones, not cellulose; cellulose for the wall is made at the cell membrane (with help of the Golgi).(ii) SER (ii) SER lipids (fats) aur hormones banati hai, cellulose nahi; wall ka cellulose cell membrane par (Golgi ki madad se) banta hai.
12. What outcome do you expect if all mitochondria are removed from a eukaryotic cell?12. Eukaryotic cell se saare mitochondria hata dein to kya hoga?
The cell could not carry out (aerobic) cellular respiration, so very little ATP would be made; energy-needing activities (making proteins, transport, division) would stop and the cell would die. (It also cannot make new mitochondria, as they arise only from existing ones.) Cell (aerobic) cellular respiration nahi kar paayegi, bahut kam ATP banega; energy wali activities (protein banana, transport, division) rukengi aur cell mar jaayegi. (Naye mitochondria bhi nahi banenge, wo purane se hi bante hain.)
13. Which phenomenon inhibits tumour formation in the human body? Can plants develop tumours?13. Insaani body mein tumour banne se kaunsi phenomenon rokti hai? Kya paudhon mein tumour ban sakte hain?
Contact inhibition — normal cells stop dividing when they touch neighbours (also programmed cell death removes faulty cells). Plant cells, held by rigid walls, do not show contact inhibition, yet plants can form tumour-like growths called galls (e.g. crown gall caused by bacteria, or by insects/fungi), but these do not spread through the body like malignant animal tumours. Contact inhibition — normal cells padosiyon ko chhoone par division rok deti hain (programmed cell death bhi kharab cells hatata hai). Sakht wall wali plant cells mein contact inhibition nahi hota, phir bhi paudhon mein galls jaisi tumour-like growth ho sakti hai (jaise bacteria se crown gall, ya keede/fungi se), par ye malignant animal tumours ki tarah poori body mein nahi phailti.

15. What would happen if gametes were formed by mitosis?15. Agar gametes mitosis se banein to kya hoga?
Gametes would have the full chromosome number; at fertilisation the zygote would have double the number, and it would keep doubling every generation — causing abnormal development. Also, offspring would show less variation. Gametes mein poore chromosomes honge; fertilisation par zygote mein double honge, aur har generation mein double hote jaayenge — abnormal development. Bachchon mein variation bhi kam hoga.
16. Farmer Deepa preserves amla and lemons as pickles, murabba and sharbat using salt, sugar or jaggery. (i) Scientific concept? (ii) How do high salt/sugar stop bacteria and fungi? (iii) A healthy recipe? (iv) Values?16. (i) वैज्ञानिक अवधारणा? Kisaan Deepa namak, cheeni ya gud se amla aur nimbu ka achaar, murabba, sharbat banati hai. (i) Scientific concept? (ii) Zyada namak/cheeni bacteria-fungi kaise rokte hain? (iii) Ek healthy recipe? (iv) Values?
(i) Osmosis (preservation by salt/sugar). (ii) Strong salt/sugar makes a hypertonic medium; water moves out of microbial cells, they get dehydrated (plasmolysed) and cannot grow or multiply. (iii) e.g. amla murabba with jaggery, lemon-ginger pickle with salt and a little oil, or amla candy dried in the sun. (iv) Reducing food waste, food security, applying science in daily life, entrepreneurship, sustainability and higher income.(i) (i) Osmosis (namak/cheeni se preservation). (ii) Zyada namak/cheeni hypertonic medium banate hain; microbes ki cells se paani bahar nikal jaata hai, wo dehydrate hokar badh ya multiply nahi kar paate. (iii) Jaise gud wala amla murabba, namak aur thode tel wala nimbu-adrak achaar, ya dhoop mein sukhayi amla candy. (iv) Khane ki barbaadi ghatana, food security, roz ki zindagi mein science, entrepreneurship, sustainability aur zyada income.
