A tissue is a group of cells, similar in structure, that work together to perform a specific function. Tissues → organs → organ systems → organism. Forming different tissues gives division of labour, which makes the body efficient: muscle tissue moves, nervous tissue carries messages, xylem carries water, phloem carries food. Tissue structure mein same cells ka group hai jo milkar ek specific kaam karti hain. Tissues → organs → organ systems → organism. Alag tissues banne se division of labour hota hai, jisse body efficient banti hai: muscle tissue movement, nervous tissue messages, xylem paani, phloem khana le jaata hai.

3.2Tissues for growth in plants — meristemsपौधों में वृद्धि के ऊतक — विभज्योतकPaudhon mein growth ke tissues — meristems

Plants grow in length, in girth (thickness) and regrow after cutting or grazing. This needs actively dividing cells — meristematic tissue. Paudhe length, girth (motai) mein badhte hain aur kaatne ya charne ke baad phir ugte hain. Iske liye lagataar divide hoti cells chahiye — meristematic tissue.

Activity 3.1 — onion roots with and without tipsTwo onion bulbs grow roots in water (Jar A, Jar B). On day 3 the root tips in Jar B are cut by about 1 cm. Roots in Jar A keep growing; roots in Jar B stop growing. So roots grow only from their tips, where cells divide continuously (you saw mitosis in onion root tips in Ch 2). Activity 3.1 — tips ke saath aur bina tips ki onion rootsDo pyaaz paani mein roots ugaate hain (Jar A, Jar B). Teesre din Jar B ki roots ke tips lagbhag 1 cm kaate jaate hain. Jar A ki roots badhti rehti hain; Jar B ki ruk jaati hain. Matlab roots sirf tips se badhti hain, jahan cells lagataar batti hain (Ch 2 mein onion root tip mein mitosis dekha).

Meristem cells: small, thin walls, large prominent nucleus, dense cytoplasm, no vacuoles, tightly packed with no intercellular spaces — all suited to rapid division. Some new cells lose the ability to divide and become specialised for support, transport or storage — this is differentiation, and they form permanent tissues. Meristem cells: chhoti, patli wall, bada saaf nucleus, ghana cytoplasm, vacuole nahi, bina khaali jagah ke sati hui — tez division ke liye. Kuch nayi cells divide karna chhodkar support, transport ya storage ke liye specialised banti hain — ye differentiation hai, aur ye permanent tissues banati hain.

3.2.4Permanent tissuesस्थायी ऊतकPermanent tissues

In a T.S. of a sunflower stem you can see several kinds of cells. Permanent tissues are simple (one type of cell) or complex (more than one type). Sunflower ke tane ke T.S. mein kai tarah ki cells dikhti hain. Permanent tissues simple (ek type ki cell) ya complex (ek se zyada type) hote hain.

(i) Protective tissue — epidermis: a single layer of tightly packed flat cells covering the plant, coated with a waxy cuticle (cutin) — thick in desert plants to cut water loss; protects against injury and parasites. Root hairs increase absorption. Stomata in leaves allow gas exchange and transpiration, which creates a transpiration pull in xylem and removes wastes. In old stems a cork cambium forms dead, waterproof cork cells — the bark.(i) (i) Protective tissue — epidermis: paudhe ko dhakne wali sati chapti cells ki ek layer, waxy cuticle (cutin) se dhaki — registani paudhon mein moti taaki paani kam ude; chot aur parasites se bachav. Root hairs absorption badhate hain. Pattiyon ke stomata gas exchange aur transpiration karte hain, jo xylem mein transpiration pull banata hai aur waste hatata hai. (iii) Conducting tissues — complex permanent tissues: xylem carries water and minerals from roots upward and gives strength (tracheids, vessels, xylem fibres — dead; xylem parenchyma — the only living part). Phloem carries food from leaves to other parts and is mostly living (sieve tubes, companion cells that regulate them and monitor sugar loading, phloem parenchyma storing food/resin/tannins/latex, and phloem fibres).(iii) (iii) Conducting tissues — complex permanent tissues: xylem roots se paani aur minerals upar le jaata hai aur mazbooti deta hai (tracheids, vessels, xylem fibres — mare hue; xylem parenchyma — akela zinda hissa). Phloem pattiyon se khana baaki hisson tak le jaata hai aur zyada-tar zinda hai (sieve tubes, unhe control karne aur sugar loading dekhne wali companion cells, khana/resin/tannin/latex rakhne wala phloem parenchyma, aur phloem fibres).

Tissue systems: (1) dermal — outer covering, protects and reduces water loss; (2) ground — main body between dermal and conducting tissues (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma); (3) vascular — xylem and phloem. Tissue systems: (1) dermal — bahari cover, bachav aur paani kam udna; (2) ground — dermal aur conducting tissues ke beech ka main hissa (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma); (3) vascular — xylem aur phloem.

3.3Animal tissuesजंतु ऊतकAnimal tissues

Animal tissues are of four main types: epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous. Animal tissues mainly chaar tarah ke hain: epithelial, connective, muscular aur nervous.

3.3.1Epithelial tissuesउपकला ऊतकEpithelial tissues

Epithelium forms the outer covering (skin) and lines internal organs (mouth, lungs, blood vessels, intestine). Its cells are closely packed with very little space — this keeps germs out, reduces water loss and helps absorption, secretion and movement of substances. Epithelium bahari cover (skin) banata hai aur andar ke organs (munh, lungs, blood vessels, intestine) ko line karta hai. Iski cells sati hui hoti hain, beech mein bahut kam jagah — isse germs andar nahi jaate, paani kam udta hai aur absorption, secretion mein madad milti hai.

3.3.2Connective tissuesसंयोजी ऊतकConnective tissues

A tissue that connects and supports other tissues is a connective tissue. Its cells lie in a matrix: watery in blood, hard in bone. Blood: plasma (~55%) + formed elements (~45%): RBCs (red due to iron-rich haemoglobin, live about 4 months), WBCs (collect at infections → redness, swelling, pus), platelets (clotting). See blood cells in 3D. Jo tissue doosre tissues ko jodta aur support deta hai wo connective tissue hai. Iski cells matrix mein hoti hain: blood mein liquid, bone mein sakht. Nervous tissue — sense, communicate, respond

Nervous tissue is the body’s control and coordination network; the brain is the control centre and muscles act on its instructions (during exercise the brain signals the heart to beat faster). Its cells are neurons: cell body (nucleus), dendrites (receive signals) and a long axon ending in axon terminals (pass the message on). Neuron in 3D. Nervous tissue body ka control aur coordination network hai; brain control centre hai aur muscles uske instructions par kaam karti hain (exercise mein brain dil ko tez dhadakne ka signal deta hai). 3.4The musculoskeletal systemपेशी-कंकाल तंत्रMusculoskeletal system

Bones, muscles, joints, cartilage, tendons and ligaments together help us stand upright, move, keep posture and protect organs — under the control of the nervous system. A muscle contracts, the tendon transmits the pull to the bone, and the bone moves at a joint. The adult skeleton is about 12–15% of body weight. Skeleton in 3D. Bones, muscles, joints, cartilage, tendons aur ligaments milkar humein seedha khada rakhte, chalaate, posture banaye rakhte aur organs bachaate hain — nervous system ke control mein. The skeleton (skull, vertebral column, rib cage) gives strength and protects organs. The backbone is a series of vertebrae with cartilage discs between them — cushions that let us bend and twist and protect the spinal cord. 12 pairs of ribs form the rib cage, joined to the spine at the back and to the breastbone (sternum) in front by flexible cartilage, so it can expand and contract during breathing. Yoga (International Yoga Day, 21 June) improves flexibility, posture and breathing. Skeleton (khopdi, vertebral column, rib cage) mazbooti aur organs ka bachav karta hai. Think as a Scientist — totipotencyIn 1958 F. C. Steward grew single phloem cells of carrot in a nutrient medium with sugars and hormones; they dedifferentiated into a mass of unspecialised cells, then redifferentiated into roots, shoots and a whole plant. This ability is totipotency. Indian scientists Sipra Guha Mukherjee and S. C. Maheshwari grew whole plants by anther culture. Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall (tumour-like swellings in plants); scientists now use it to put useful genes into crops. Scientist ki tarah sochiye — totipotency1958 mein F. Is kshamata ko totipotency kehte hain. Indian scientists Sipra Guha Mukherjee aur S. C. Maheshwari ne anther culture se poore paudhe ugaye. Activity 3.1. What trend do you see in the onion-root data, and what do you infer? Onion root ke data mein kya trend dikhta hai, aur kya nishkarsh nikalta hai?
Jar A roots keep getting longer every day; Jar B roots stop growing after day 3 (tips cut). Inference: roots grow only from their tips, which contain actively dividing cells — the apical meristem. Jar A ki roots roz lambi hoti rehti hain; Jar B ki roots teesre din (tips katne) ke baad ruk jaati hain. Nishkarsh: roots sirf tips se badhti hain, jahan divide hoti cells hain — apical meristem.
Why do you think the cells of meristematic tissue lack vacuoles?
Vacuoles store materials and take up space; meristem cells must divide rapidly, so they need dense cytoplasm full of organelles and a large nucleus, not storage space. Vacuole cheezein store karti aur jagah gherti hai; meristem cells ko tezi se batna hai, isliye unhe storage nahi, organelles se bhara ghana cytoplasm aur bada nucleus chahiye.
Pause and Ponder 1. Coconut husk fibres are hard and brittle, but coriander leaf stalks are soft and flexible. Why? Nariyal ke reshe sakht aur brittle, par dhaniya ki dandi naram aur flexible kyun?
Coconut husk is sclerenchyma — dead cells with thick lignin walls. Coriander stalk has collenchyma — living cells thickened only at corners by pectin, giving support with flexibility. Nariyal ka chhilka sclerenchyma hai — moti lignin wall wali mari cells. Dhaniya ki dandi mein collenchyma — sirf corners par pectin se moti zinda cells, jo flexibility ke saath support deti hain.
Pause and Ponder 2. Why is a thick cuticle useful for a desert plant but a disadvantage for an underwater plant? Moti cuticle registani paudhe ke liye faydemand par paani ke andar wale paudhe ke liye nuksaandeh kyun?
Desert: the waxy cuticle cuts water loss by transpiration. Underwater: water loss is no problem, but the plant takes gases, water and minerals through its surface; a thick cuticle would block this exchange. Registaan: waxy cuticle transpiration se paani ka nuksaan ghatati hai. Paani mein: paani udna problem nahi, par paudha gases, paani aur minerals surface se leta hai; moti cuticle ye exchange rok degi.
Pause and Ponder 3. How do the dead xylem cells work with living leaf cells to keep water moving up against gravity? Mari xylem cells zinda patti cells ke saath gravity ke khilaaf paani upar kaise pahunchaati hain?
Dead, hollow, end-to-end xylem vessels and tracheids form continuous pipes. Living leaf cells lose water by transpiration through stomata; this creates a pull that draws the column of water up the xylem from the roots. Mari, khokhli, sire se sira judi vessels aur tracheids lagataar pipes banati hain. Zinda patti cells stomata se transpiration dwara paani khoti hain; isse pull banta hai jo roots se paani ke column ko xylem mein upar kheenchta hai.
Pause and Ponder 4. What would happen if there were no stomata in the epidermis of stems or leaves?
No gas exchange — CO₂ could not enter for photosynthesis and O₂ could not leave/enter; no transpiration, so no transpiration pull to bring water and minerals up, no cooling, and wastes would not be removed. The plant would starve and wilt. Gas exchange nahi — photosynthesis ke liye CO₂ andar nahi jaayegi, O₂ aa-ja nahi paayegi; transpiration nahi, to paani-minerals upar laane wala pull nahi, thandak nahi, waste nahi niklega. Paudha bhookha rehkar murjha jaayega.

(a) They are totipotent — they can dedifferentiate, divide and redifferentiate into a whole plant. (b) Highest in the liquid medium + nutrients under the conditions that gave a 20% increase in fresh weight (with air/aeration — stirring supplies oxygen and spreads nutrients); the other two combinations gave reduced weight. (c) No — most mature animal cells are not totipotent; a whole animal cannot be grown from a body cell in this way. (d) Mass production of identical plants (micropropagation of bananas, orchids), disease-free plants, genetically improved crops, production of medicines/phytochemicals.(a) (a) Wo totipotent hain — dedifferentiate, divide aur redifferentiate hokar poora paudha bana sakti hain. (b) Liquid medium + nutrients, un conditions mein jinmein fresh weight 20% badha (hawa/aeration — hilaane se oxygen aur nutrients phailte hain), highest; baaki do mein weight ghata. (c) Nahi — zyada-tar mature animal cells totipotent nahi; aise body cell se poora jaanwar nahi banta. (d) Ek jaise paudhon ka bade paimaane par production (kela, orchid), disease-free paudhe, genetically improved fasalein, dawaiyan/phytochemicals.

(iii) To allow quick exchange of materials across them.(iii) (iii) Taaki unke aar-paar cheezon ka tez exchange ho sake.
4. Straight-leg jump (knees and ankles stiff) vs normal jump (knees and ankles bent). How did ankle, knee and hip positions differ?4. Seedhe pair ki chhalaang (ghutne-takhne sakht) vs normal chhalaang (ghutne-takhne mude). Takhne, ghutne aur hip ki position mein kya fark tha?
Straight-leg jump: ankles, knees and hips stay almost straight, so the jump is low and landing is jarring — little cushioning. Normal jump: ankles and knees bend (flex) and hips bend before take-off, then straighten forcefully — muscles push through the hinge joints, the jump is higher, and bending again on landing absorbs the shock. Seedhe pair ki chhalaang: takhne, ghutne aur hip lagbhag seedhe rehte hain, isliye chhalaang neechi aur utarna jhatkedaar — kam gaddi. Normal chhalaang: uchhalne se pehle takhne aur ghutne mudte aur hip jhukta hai, phir zor se seedhe hote hain — muscles hinge joints se dhakka deti hain, chhalaang oonchi, aur utarte waqt phir mudne se jhatka absorb hota hai.

7. Teak tree data — age (years): 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 40; diameter (cm): 4, 8, 24, 28, 32, 40; rings: 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 40. (i) Interpret diameter vs time. (ii) Relation of diameter to rings? (iii) Which tissue causes girth and where?7. Teak ke data — umar (saal): 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 40; diameter (cm): 4, 8, 24, 28, 32, 40; rings: 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 40. (i) Diameter vs time ka matlab. (ii) Diameter aur rings ka sambandh? (iii) Girth kis tissue se aur kahan?
(i) Diameter keeps increasing with age. Rate: 0–10 yr: 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8 cm/yr; 10–20 yr: (24 − 8) ÷ 10 = 1.6 cm/yr (fastest — good growth years); 20–40 yr: (40 − 24) ÷ 20 = 0.8 cm/yr. Over 40 years the average is 40 ÷ 40 = 1 cm/yr. (ii) One annual ring forms each year, so rings = age; as rings increase the diameter increases — diameter rises with the number of rings (but not by an equal amount each year: wide rings = good years, narrow = poor years). (iii) Lateral meristem, a ring of dividing cells along the circumference of the stem (between xylem and phloem).(i) (i) Umar ke saath diameter badhta rehta hai. Rate: 0–10 saal: 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8 cm/saal; 10–20 saal: (24 − 8) ÷ 10 = 1.6 cm/saal (sabse tez — achhe saal); 20–40 saal: (40 − 24) ÷ 20 = 0.8 cm/saal. 40 saal ka average 40 ÷ 40 = 1 cm/saal. (ii) Har saal ek annual ring banta hai, isliye rings = umar; rings badhne par diameter badhta hai (par har saal barabar nahi: chaude rings = achhe saal, patle = kharab saal). (iii) Lateral meristem, tane ki paridhi mein (xylem aur phloem ke beech) divide hoti cells ka ring.
8. An elephant debarked a tree. (i) Which functions are hampered? (ii) Which tissue is affected by further trunk damage? (iii) Which function is hampered if tissues beneath the bark are badly damaged? (iv) Assumptions?8. Haathi ne ped ki chhaal utaar di. (i) Kaunse kaam rukte hain? (ii) Tane ko aur nuksaan se kaunsa tissue prabhavit? (iii) Chhaal ke neeche ke tissues bahut kharab hon to kaunsa kaam rukega? (iv) Assumptions?
(i) Protection (against water loss, injury, insects, microbes) is lost, and since phloem lies just inside the bark, transport of food from leaves to roots is hampered. (ii) The xylem (wood) — and the lateral meristem — would be damaged next. (iii) If the phloem/cambium ring beneath is destroyed all round (girdling), food cannot reach the roots — roots starve and the tree may slowly die; if xylem is damaged, water and mineral transport upward stops. (iv) Assumptions: the bark was removed all round the trunk and deep enough to remove the phloem; if only a patch was removed, food could still flow through the remaining phloem and the tree would survive and heal.(i) (ii) Aage xylem (lakdi) — aur lateral meristem — kharab honge. (iii) Agar neeche ka phloem/cambium ring chaaron taraf nasht ho (girdling), khana roots tak nahi pahunchega — roots bhookhi, ped dheere-dheere mar sakta hai; xylem kharab ho to upar paani aur minerals ka transport rukega. (iv) Assumptions: chhaal tane ke chaaron taraf aur itni gehraai se hati ki phloem bhi nikal gaya; agar sirf ek hissa hata, khana bache phloem se behta rahega aur ped bachkar ghaav bhar lega.
9. A young mango sapling bends flexibly in monsoon winds without breaking. Which tissue gives this flexibility? What if it were replaced by sclerenchyma?9. Kaunsa tissue? Sclerenchyma se badal dein to?
Collenchyma — living cells with pectin-thickened corners give support plus flexibility. If replaced by sclerenchyma (dead, rigid lignified cells), the stem would be stiff and hard; it would not bend and could snap in strong winds, and it could not grow/flex easily. Collenchyma — pectin se mote corners wali zinda cells support aur flexibility deti hain. Sclerenchyma (mari, sakht, lignin wali) se badlein to tana sakht hoga; mudega nahi aur tez hawa mein toot sakta hai, aur aasaani se badh/mud nahi paayega.
10. Sohan’s sugarcane cuttings: type B sprouted, type A did not (Fig 3.23). (i) Why? (ii) What difference did B have? (iii) What was observed/measured? (iv) What should be kept the same?10. (i) क्यों? Sohan ki ganne ki cuttings: type B ugi, A nahi (Fig 3.23). (i) Kyun? (ii) B mein kya fark? (iii) Kya dekha/naapa? (iv) Kya same rakhein?
(i) Type B cuttings had a node with buds and intercalary meristem, whose dividing cells form new shoots and roots; type A (internode only) had no meristem. (ii) B included at least one node (with a bud); A was a piece of internode without a node. (iii) Whether the cuttings sprouted — appearance of new shoots/roots, number of sprouts or their length after some weeks. (iv) Same length/thickness and age of cuttings, same soil, water, sunlight, temperature, depth of planting and time.(i) प्रकार B की कलमों में कलिका सहित पर्वसंधि और अंतर्वेशी विभज्योतक था, जिसकी विभाजित कोशिकाएँ नए प्ररोह व जड़ें बनाती हैं; प्रकार A (केवल पर्व) में विभज्योतक नहीं था। (i) Type B cuttings mein bud ke saath node aur intercalary meristem tha, jiski divide hoti cells naye shoots aur roots banati hain; type A (sirf internode) mein meristem nahi tha. (ii) B mein kam se kam ek node (bud ke saath); A bina node ka internode. (iii) Cuttings ugi ya nahi — kuch hafton baad naye shoots/roots, unki ginti ya lambai. (iv) Cuttings ki same lambai/motai aur umar, same mitti, paani, dhoop, temperature, gehraai aur samay.
11. Rohan: “A tissue is a group of similar cells performing similar functions.” Rajiv: “True for simple tissues, a little different for complex tissues.” Explain.11. 11. Rohan: “Tissue same kaam karne wali same cells ka group hai.” Rajiv: “Simple tissues ke liye sahi, complex tissues mein thoda alag.” Samjhaiye.
Rajiv is right. A simple tissue (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma) has one type of cell. A complex tissue (xylem, phloem) has different types of cells — e.g. phloem has sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem parenchyma and fibres — that look different but work together for one common function (transport of food). So a tissue is better described as a group of cells working together for a specific function. Rajiv sahi hai. Simple tissue (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma) mein ek type ki cell hoti hai. Complex tissue (xylem, phloem) mein alag type ki cells — jaise phloem mein sieve tube, companion cell, phloem parenchyma aur fibres — jo alag dikhti hain par ek common kaam (khane ka transport) ke liye milkar kaam karti hain. Isliye tissue ko specific kaam ke liye milkar kaam karne wali cells ka group kehna better hai.
12. Coconut husk fibres make tough mats. Which tissue gives this strength? Why couldn’t living parenchyma do it?12. Nariyal ke reshon se mazboot chataiyan banti hain. Kaunsa tissue? Zinda parenchyma aisa kyun nahi kar sakta?
Sclerenchyma — long dead cells with thick lignified walls, very hard and strong. Parenchyma has thin walls, loose packing and soft living contents; it stores food and would be weak, decay and lose shape when dry. Sclerenchyma — moti lignin wall wali lambi mari cells, bahut sakht aur mazboot. Parenchyma ki patli wall, dheeli arrangement aur naram zinda hissa; ye khana store karta hai aur kamzor hoga, sadega aur sookhkar shape kho dega.
13. Vibha: “Meristematic cells are located only at the root and shoot apices.” Your view? What question can Neha ask?13. Vibha: “Meristematic cells sirf root aur shoot ke tips par hoti hain.” Aapki raay? Neha kya sawaal pooch sakti hai?
The statement is incorrect. Apical meristems are at tips, but lateral meristem lies along the stem (girth) and intercalary meristem at nodes/base of internodes (regrowth). Neha could ask: “If growth happens only at tips, how does a tree trunk get thicker every year, and how does grass grow back after mowing?” Apical meristems tips par hain, par lateral meristem tane mein (girth) aur intercalary meristem node/internode ke base par (regrowth) hote hain. Neha pooch sakti hai: “Agar growth sirf tips par hoti hai, to ped ka tana har saal mota kaise hota hai, aur ghaas katne ke baad phir kaise ugti hai?”
14. A plant cell and an animal cell are the same size. (i) Which has a larger vacuole and why? (ii) Assumptions?14. Ek plant aur ek animal cell same size ki hain. (i) Kiski vacuole badi aur kyun? (ii) Assumptions?
(i) The plant cell — a mature plant cell has one large central vacuole filled with cell sap that stores water and keeps the cell firm (turgid) against the wall; animal cells have small or no vacuoles. (ii) Assumptions: both are mature, typical cells (not a meristem cell, which lacks vacuoles), and both are healthy and well-watered.(i) (i) Plant cell — mature plant cell mein cell sap se bhari ek badi central vacuole hoti hai jo paani store karti aur cell ko wall ke against firm rakhti hai; animal cells mein chhoti ya koi vacuole nahi. (ii) Assumptions: dono mature, typical cells hain (meristem cell nahi, jismein vacuole nahi hoti), healthy aur paani se bhari.
15. A textbook says, “Each plant tissue performs only one specific function.” What questions would you ask, and which tissues would you examine?15. Ek kitaab kehti hai, “Har plant tissue sirf ek specific kaam karta hai.” Aap kaunse sawaal poochenge, aur kin tissues ki jaanch karenge?
Questions: “Does parenchyma only store food, or does it also photosynthesise and help plants float?” “Does xylem only carry water, or does it also give strength?” “Does the epidermis only protect, or also absorb water (root hairs) and exchange gases (stomata)?” Examples show many tissues do more than one function — parenchyma (storage, photosynthesis, buoyancy), xylem (conduction + support), epidermis (protection, absorption, gas exchange, transpiration). So the statement is not fully correct. Examples dikhate hain ki kai tissues ek se zyada kaam karte hain — parenchyma (storage, photosynthesis, tairna), xylem (conduction + support), epidermis (bachav, absorption, gas exchange, transpiration). Isliye kathan poori tarah sahi nahi.
