Parts and their functions
- Outer membrane (बाहरी झिल्ली) — Smooth and porous.
- Inner membrane (भीतरी झिल्ली) — Folded into finger-like projections called cristae.
- Cristae (क्रिस्टी) — Folds increase the surface area for the reactions of cellular respiration that release energy, stored as ATP.
- Own DNA (अपना DNA) — Mitochondria have their own DNA and ribosomes and make some of their own proteins — like bacteria, suggesting a shared evolutionary history.
- Ribosomes (राइबोसोम) — Help make some of the organelle’s own proteins.
