Fluid-mosaic structure of the cell membraneकोशिका झिल्ली की तरल-मोज़ेक संरचना

Parts and their functions
- Lipid bilayer (लिपिड द्विपरत) — Two layers of special fat molecules: water-attracting heads face outwards, water-repelling tails face inwards. Molecules move sideways, flip and rotate — so the membrane is "fluid".
- Membrane proteins (झिल्ली प्रोटीन) — Proteins embedded in the bilayer like tiles in a mosaic — hence "mosaic".
- Protein gatekeeper (प्रोटीन द्वारपाल) — Some proteins act like gatekeepers that help substances pass through — this is why the membrane is selectively permeable.
- Selective movement (चयनात्मक आवागमन) — Some substances (like water, O₂, CO₂) pass, others are blocked.
- Thickness (मोटाई) — Only about 7–10 nanometres thick (1 nm = 0.000001 mm).
