Parts and what they mean
- Iron filings (लौह-चूर्ण) — Each tiny filing becomes a little magnet and lines up along the field B, so together they trace the field lines.
- North pole (N) (उत्तरी ध्रुव (N)) — The end that points towards geographic north when the magnet hangs freely. Filings crowd here — the field is strong.
- South pole (S) (दक्षिणी ध्रुव (S)) — The other end; field lines re-enter the magnet here. Filings crowd here too.
- Glass sheet (काँच की शीट) — Filings are sprinkled on a glass sheet placed over the magnet and the sheet is tapped gently.
