Parts and what they mean
- Ammonia, NH₃ (अमोनिया, NH₃) — Amines are derivatives of ammonia.
- Primary amine (1°), R–NH₂ (प्राथमिक ऐमीन (1°), R–NH₂) — One H of NH₃ replaced by R or Ar: RNH₂ / ArNH₂.
- Secondary amine (2°), R–NH–R′ (द्वितीयक ऐमीन (2°), R–NH–R′) — Two H of NH₃ (or one H of R–NH₂) replaced by alkyl/aryl groups.
- Tertiary amine (3°), R₃N (तृतीयक ऐमीन (3°), R₃N) — All three H of NH₃ replaced. No H left on N.
- Number of H atoms on N (N पर H परमाणुओं की संख्या) — This number decides many reactions: carbylamine test (1° only), Hinsberg test, acylation (1° and 2° only).
- Simple amine (सरल ऐमीन) — All alkyl/aryl groups on N are the same.
- Mixed amine (मिश्रित ऐमीन) — The groups on N are different, e.g. N-methylethanamine.
- Quaternary ammonium salt, R₄N⁺X⁻ (चतुष्क अमोनियम लवण, R₄N⁺X⁻) — Final product of exhaustive alkylation; used as surfactants (NCERT intro).
