Parts and what they mean
- Nitrogen of a primary amine (R–NH₂) (प्राथमिक ऐमीन (R–NH₂) का नाइट्रोजन) — N carries two H atoms (both can H-bond) and one lone pair.
- Nitrogen of the next molecule (अगले अणु का नाइट्रोजन) — Accepts an H-bond with its lone pair and donates one with its own N–H.
- N–H bond (N–H बंध) — Polar because N (3.0) is more electronegative than H; the H is slightly positive.
- Hydrogen bond N–H···N (हाइड्रोजन बंध N–H···N) — Intermolecular association. More in 1° (two H on N) than 2° (one H); 3° amines have no H on N → no association.
- Lone pair of nitrogen (नाइट्रोजन का एकाकी युग्म) — Attracts the δ+ H of the neighbouring molecule.
- Boiling point order 1° > 2° > 3° (क्वथनांक क्रम 1° > 2° > 3°) — For isomeric amines, because the extent of H-bonding decreases in this order (NCERT Table 9.2).
