Parts and what they mean
- Benzenesulphonyl chloride, C₆H₅SO₂Cl (Hinsberg's reagent) (बेन्ज़ीनसल्फ़ोनिल क्लोराइड, C₆H₅SO₂Cl (हिन्सबर्ग अभिकर्मक)) — Reacts with 1° and 2° amines (which have N–H) to give sulphonamides + HCl.
- Product with a 1° amine (1° ऐमीन के साथ उत्पाद) — C₆H₅SO₂Cl + H₂N–C₂H₅ → C₆H₅SO₂NH–C₂H₅ + HCl (N-ethylbenzenesulphonamide).
- Acidic H on nitrogen (नाइट्रोजन पर अम्लीय H) — Strongly acidic because of the strongly electron-withdrawing sulphonyl group → the sulphonamide is soluble in alkali.
- Product with a 2° amine (2° ऐमीन के साथ उत्पाद) — C₆H₅SO₂Cl + HN(C₂H₅)₂ → C₆H₅SO₂N(C₂H₅)₂ + HCl. No H on N → not acidic → insoluble in alkali.
- Tertiary amine: no reaction (तृतीयक ऐमीन: कोई अभिक्रिया नहीं) — No H on N to be replaced. This different behaviour is used to distinguish and to separate a mixture of 1°, 2° and 3° amines.
- p-Toluenesulphonyl chloride (p-टॉलूईनसल्फ़ोनिल क्लोराइड) — NCERT: these days benzenesulphonyl chloride is replaced by p-toluenesulphonyl chloride.
