Parts and their functions

• Vessel (वाहिका) — Long tube of cells joined end to end, thick-walled, dead — carries water and minerals up from roots.
• Tracheid (वाहिनिका) — Elongated, tubular, thick-walled dead cell with tapering ends; conducts water.
• Xylem parenchyma (जाइलम मृदूतक) — The only living part of xylem; stores food.
• Xylem fibre (जाइलम रेशा) — Sclerenchymatous, gives strength.
• Sieve tube (चालनी नलिका) — Living cells joined end to end by perforated walls (sieve plates); carry food from leaves to other parts.
• Companion cell (सहचर कोशिका) — Specialised parenchyma beside a sieve tube; regulates it and monitors loading/unloading of sugars.
• Phloem parenchyma (फ्लोएम मृदूतक) — Stores food, resin, tannins and latex.
• Phloem fibre (फ्लोएम रेशा) — Sclerenchymatous fibres supporting sieve tubes.
