Parts and their functions
- Apical meristem (शीर्षस्थ विभज्योतक) — At root and shoot tips; increases length (height of stem, depth of roots). Onion roots stop growing when tips are cut.
- Lateral meristem (पार्श्व विभज्योतक) — Ring of dividing cells along the stem; increases girth (thickness) — gives annual rings in trees.
- Intercalary meristem (अंतर्वेशी विभज्योतक) — At the base of internodes / just above nodes; regrowth after cutting or grazing (grass, hedges).
- Permanent tissue (स्थायी ऊतक) — Cells that lost the ability to divide and became specialised (differentiation).
- Root (जड़) — Grows in length only from its tip (root apical meristem).
- Node (पर्वसंधि) — Point where leaves/branches arise.
