Motion is everywhere — butterflies, tides, clouds. To study it, scientists start with idealised simple forms: linear (straight-line), circular and oscillatory motion. This chapter adds displacement, average velocity and average acceleration, and describes motion with numbers, equations and graphs. Motion har jagah hai — titliyan, tides, baadal. Ise samajhne ke liye scientists simple idealised forms se shuru karte hain: linear (seedhi line), circular aur oscillatory motion. Is chapter mein displacement, average velocity aur average acceleration judte hain, aur motion ko numbers, equations aur graphs se batate hain.

4.1Motion in a straight lineसीधी रेखा में गतिSeedhi line mein motion

Position = distance and direction of an object from a fixed reference point (origin O) at an instant. An object is in motion if its position changes with time, and at rest if it does not. On a straight line, positions right of O are + and left of O are −. An instant is one clock reading; a time interval is the gap between two readings. Position = kisi instant par fixed reference point (origin O) se object ki doori aur direction. Position time ke saath badle to object motion mein, na badle to rest mein. Seedhi line par O ke right + aur left −. Instant ghadi ki ek reading hai; time interval do readings ke beech ka gap.

Total distance travelled = length of the actual path (only a number). Displacement = net change in position between two instants — it has magnitude and direction. SI unit of both: metre (m). Quantities with only magnitude are scalars; those needing direction too are vectors. Total distance travelled = asli raaste ki lambai (sirf number). Displacement = do instants ke beech position mein net badlaav — isme magnitude aur direction dono. Dono ka SI unit: metre (m). Sirf magnitude wali quantities scalars; direction bhi chahne wali vectors.

Distance vs displacementMagnitude of displacement ≤ distance travelled. They are equal only if the object moves in one direction without turning back. Displacement can be zero (back to start) even when distance is not. Distance vs displacementDisplacement ka magnitude ≤ distance. Ye sirf tab barabar jab object bina mude ek hi direction mein chale. Wapas start par aane par displacement zero ho sakta hai, chahe distance zero na ho.

Average speed aur average velocity

average speed = total distance ÷ time interval
only magnitude (no direction)केवल परिमाण (दिशा नहीं)sirf magnitude (direction nahi)
v_av = s ÷ t (displacement ÷ time interval)
average velocity — magnitude and direction (+ or −); unit m/s or km/hमाध्य वेग — परिमाण और दिशा (+ या −); मात्रक m/s या km/haverage velocity — magnitude aur direction (+ ya −); unit m/s ya km/h

Uniform motion: equal distances in equal time intervals (constant speed). Non-uniform motion: unequal distances in equal intervals. Average velocity is the average rate of change of position. India’s contribution: speed = distance ÷ time appears in the Aryabhatiya (5th century CE); the Ganitakaumudi (14th century) asks: two postmen 210 yojanas apart walk towards each other at 9 and 5 yojanas/day — they meet after 210 ÷ 14 = 15 days. Uniform motion: barabar time intervals mein barabar doori (constant speed). Non-uniform motion: barabar intervals mein alag doori. Average velocity position ke badlaav ki average rate hai. India ka yogdaan: speed = distance ÷ time Aryabhatiya (5th century) mein hai; Ganitakaumudi (14th century) ka sawaal: 210 yojan door do postmen 9 aur 5 yojan/din se ek-doosre ki taraf chalein — 210 ÷ 14 = 15 din mein milenge.

Example 4.2 — swimming poolSarang swims a 25 m pool there and back in 50 s. Distance = 50 m, displacement = 0. Average speed = 50 ÷ 50 = 1 m/s; average velocity = 0 ÷ 50 = 0 m/s. Example 4.2 — swimming poolSarang 25 m ke pool mein jaakar lautta hai, 50 s mein. Distance = 50 m, displacement = 0. Average speed = 50 ÷ 50 = 1 m/s; average velocity = 0 ÷ 50 = 0 m/s.

“Velocity” in the rest of the chapter means velocity at an instant (instantaneous velocity). A speedometer shows nearly its magnitude; the direction of the tyres gives its direction. Aage “velocity” ka matlab kisi instant ki velocity (instantaneous velocity) hai. Speedometer lagbhag iska magnitude dikhata hai; tyres ki direction iski direction.

4.1.4Average accelerationमाध्य त्वरणAverage acceleration

a = (v − u) ÷ (t₂ − t₁)
change in velocity ÷ time interval; SI unit m/s² (m s⁻²)वेग में परिवर्तन ÷ समय अंतराल; SI मात्रक m/s² (m s⁻²)velocity mein badlaav ÷ time interval; SI unit m/s² (m s⁻²)

If speed increases, acceleration is along the velocity; if speed decreases, acceleration is opposite to velocity (negative). Acceleration can come from a change in magnitude, direction or both. An object can move very fast with zero acceleration (constant velocity). Speed badhe to acceleration velocity ki direction mein; speed ghate to velocity ke opposite (negative). Object bahut tez chalte hue bhi zero acceleration wala ho sakta hai (constant velocity).

Example 4.3 — bus speeding up and braking(i) u = 36 km/h = 36 × 1000 ÷ 3600 = 10 m/s, v = 54 km/h = 15 m/s, t = 10 s → a = (15 − 10) ÷ 10 = 0.5 m/s² (along velocity). (ii) u = 15 m/s, v = 0, t = 5 s → a = (0 − 15) ÷ 5 = −3 m/s² (opposite to velocity). Tip: km/h → m/s: multiply by 5/18.उदाहरण 4.3 — बस का तेज़ होना और ब्रेक(i) u = 36 km/h = 36 × 1000 ÷ 3600 = 10 m/s, v = 54 km/h = 15 m/s, t = 10 s → a = (15 − 10) ÷ 10 = 0.5 m/s² (वेग की दिशा में)। (ii) u = 15 m/s, v = 0, t = 5 s → a = (0 − 15) ÷ 5 = −3 m/s² (वेग के विपरीत)। Example 4.3 — bus ka tez hona aur brake(i) u = 36 km/h = 36 × 1000 ÷ 3600 = 10 m/s, v = 54 km/h = 15 m/s, t = 10 s → a = (15 − 10) ÷ 10 = 0.5 m/s² (velocity ki direction mein). (ii) u = 15 m/s, v = 0, t = 5 s → a = (0 − 15) ÷ 5 = −3 m/s² (velocity ke opposite). Tip: km/h → m/s: 5/18 se guna.

Free fall (Example 4.4): a dropped object’s velocity is 0, 9.8, 19.6, 29.4, 39.2 m/s at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 s — it gains 9.8 m/s every second, so acceleration is constant: g = 9.8 m/s², downward. Choose the origin and + direction as convenient, but don’t change them mid-problem. Free fall (Example 4.4): giraayi gayi cheez ki velocity 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 s par 0, 9.8, 19.6, 29.4, 39.2 m/s — har second 9.8 m/s badhti hai, isliye acceleration constant: g = 9.8 m/s², neeche ki taraf.

Motion ka graph se representation

Plot time on the X-axis and position or velocity on the Y-axis with a suitable scale (e.g. 5 divisions = 1 s, 5 divisions = 20 m). Graphs here are for motion in one direction, so distance = |displacement| and speed = |velocity|. A graph is not a route map. Time X-axis par aur position ya velocity Y-axis par sahi scale se (jaise 5 divisions = 1 s, 5 divisions = 20 m). 4.4Motion in a plane — uniform circular motionसमतल में गति — एकसमान वृत्तीय गतिPlane mein motion — uniform circular motion

Overtaking cars, a kicked ball and satellites move in two dimensions. On a circle of radius R, one revolution covers 2πR but displacement is 0; average speed v = 2πR/T. Moving on a circle at constant speed is uniform circular motion. Running on a rectangular or hexagonal track the direction changes at corners; on a circle it changes continuously. Velocity at each point is along the tangent — a marble released from a ring moves off in a straight line. Since direction keeps changing, uniform circular motion is accelerated. Overtake karti cars, kick ki gayi ball aur satellites do dimensions mein chalte hain. It no longer moves in a circle; it moves off in a straight line along the direction it had at that instant — the tangent to the circle. This shows the velocity in circular motion is along the tangent. Wo circle mein nahi ghoomta; us instant ki direction mein — circle ki tangent par — seedhi line mein chala jaata hai. 1.5 h = 1.5 revolutions. (i) Distance = 1.5 × 2πr = 1.5 × 2 × (22/7) × 7 = 66 cm. (ii) At 6:00 the tip is at 12, at 7:30 at 6 → displacement = diameter = 14 cm, from the 12 mark towards the 6 mark (downward). (iii) Average speed = 66 cm ÷ 5400 s ≈ 0.012 cm/s. (iv) Average velocity = 14 cm ÷ 5400 s ≈ 0.0026 cm/s, directed from 12 towards 6.1.5 h = 1.5 चक्कर। (i) दूरी = 1.5 × 2πr = 1.5 × 2 × (22/7) × 7 = 66 cm। 1.5 h = 1.5 chakkar. (i) Distance = 1.5 × 2πr = 1.5 × 2 × (22/7) × 7 = 66 cm. (ii) 6:00 par nok 12 par, 7:30 par 6 par → displacement = diameter = 14 cm, 12 se 6 ki taraf (neeche). (iii) Average speed = 66 cm ÷ 5400 s ≈ 0.012 cm/s. (iv) Average velocity = 14 cm ÷ 5400 s ≈ 0.0026 cm/s, 12 se 6 ki taraf.
