Start here — the 30-second ideaThermodynamics tells us WHETHER a reaction can happen; chemical kinetics tells us how FAST it happens and how (the steps). Diamond → graphite is feasible (ΔG < 0) but so slow we never see it. This chapter answers: (1) how do we measure speed? (rate of reaction), (2) what controls it? (concentration, temperature, catalyst), (3) how do we predict concentration at any time? (integrated rate equations and half-life (t½)), and (4) why do molecules need activation energy (Eₐ) and the right orientation? (collision theory). Yahan se shuru kijiye — 30 second ka ideaThermodynamics batata hai ki reaction ho SAKTA hai ya nahi; chemical kinetics batata hai ki woh kitni TEZ hota hai aur kaise (steps). Diamond → graphite feasible hai (ΔG < 0) par itna slow ki hum kabhi dekh nahi paate. Ye chapter poochta hai: (1) speed kaise naapein? (rate of reaction), (2) use kya control karta hai? (concentration, temperature, catalyst), (3) kisi bhi time concentration kaise jaanein? (integrated rate equations aur half-life), (4) molecules ko activation energy aur sahi orientation kyun chahiye? (collision theory).

Some reactions are very fast (precipitation of AgCl when AgNO₃ and NaCl solutions are mixed happens instantly), some are very slow (rusting of iron), and many are in between (inversion of cane sugar, hydrolysis of starch). Kinetics helps chemists choose the conditions — concentration, temperature, catalyst — that make a useful reaction fast and a harmful one slow. Kuch reactions bahut fast hote hain (AgNO₃ aur NaCl solution milate hi AgCl ka precipitate turant banta hai), kuch bahut slow (iron par rusting), aur kai beech ke (cane sugar ka inversion, starch ka hydrolysis). Kinetics se chemists woh conditions — concentration, temperature, catalyst — chunte hain jo useful reaction ko fast aur harmful ko slow karein.

3.1Rate of a Chemical Reactionरासायनिक अभिक्रिया का वेगChemical reaction ka rate

The rate of a reaction is the change in concentration of a reactant or a product in unit time. For a reaction R → P (volume constant), if [R]₁ and [P]₁ are the concentrations at time t₁ and [R]₂, [P]₂ at time t₂, then Δt = t₂ − t₁, Δ[R] = [R]₂ − [R]₁ and Δ[P] = [P]₂ − [P]₁. Square brackets mean molar concentration. Rate of reaction unit time mein kisi reactant ya product ki concentration ka badlav hai. Reaction R → P (volume constant) mein agar time t₁ par concentrations [R]₁, [P]₁ aur t₂ par [R]₂, [P]₂ hon, to Δt = t₂ − t₁, Δ[R] = [R]₂ − [R]₁ aur Δ[P] = [P]₂ − [P]₁. Square brackets ka matlab hai molar concentration.

Rate of disappearance of R = − Δ[R] ÷ Δt Rate of appearance of P = + Δ[P] ÷ Δt
Δ[R] is negative (R decreases), so it is multiplied by −1 to keep the rate positive. These give the average rate, rav.Δ[R] ऋणात्मक है (R घटता है), इसलिए वेग धनात्मक रखने के लिए −1 से गुणा करते हैं। Δ[R] negative hai (R ghatta hai), isliye rate positive rakhne ke liye −1 se multiply karte hain. Ye average rate rav dete hain.

Units of rate: concentration time⁻¹ — mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹ when concentration is in mol L⁻¹ and time in seconds. For gaseous reactions, if concentrations are expressed as partial pressures, the unit is atm s⁻¹. Rate ki units: concentration time⁻¹ — concentration mol L⁻¹ aur time seconds mein ho to mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹. The average rate depends on the time interval chosen and stays constant over that interval, so it cannot tell the rate at one particular moment. The instantaneous rate is the average rate over an infinitesimally small interval (Δt → 0): it is the slope of the tangent to the concentration–time curve at that instant (NCERT Fig 3.1). Average rate chune gaye time interval par depend karta hai aur us interval mein constant rehta hai, isliye kisi ek moment ka rate nahi batata. Instantaneous rate bahut chhote interval (Δt → 0) ka average rate hai: us moment concentration–time curve par kheenchi tangent ki slope (NCERT Fig 3.1).

To find the instantaneous rate at 600 s, plot [C₄H₉Cl] against time and draw a tangent touching the curve at t = 600 s (NCERT Fig 3.2). Its slope gives rinst = 5.12 × 10⁻⁵ mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹. In the same way NCERT reads rinst = 1.22 × 10⁻⁴ at 250 s, 1.0 × 10⁻⁴ at 350 s and 6.4 × 10⁻⁵ mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹ at 450 s.600 s 600 s par instantaneous rate nikaalne ke liye [C₄H₉Cl] ko time ke against plot kijiye aur t = 600 s par curve ko chhooti tangent kheenchiye (NCERT Fig 3.2). Stoichiometry matters. For Hg(l) + Cl₂(g) → HgCl₂(s), all coefficients are 1, so Rate = −Δ[Hg]/Δt = −Δ[Cl₂]/Δt = Δ[HgCl₂]/Δt. But in 2HI(g) → H₂(g) + I₂(g), HI is used up twice as fast as H₂ is formed, so each term is divided by its stoichiometric coefficient: Rate = −½ Δ[HI]/Δt = Δ[H₂]/Δt = Δ[I₂]/Δt. Stoichiometry matter karti hai. Hg(l) + Cl₂(g) → HgCl₂(s) mein saare coefficients 1 hain, isliye Rate = −Δ[Hg]/Δt = −Δ[Cl₂]/Δt = Δ[HgCl₂]/Δt. Par 2HI(g) → H₂(g) + I₂(g) mein HI, H₂ banne se double tezi se kharch hota hai, isliye har term ko uske stoichiometric coefficient se divide karte hain: Rate = −½ Δ[HI]/Δt = Δ[H₂]/Δt = Δ[I₂]/Δt.

General rule for aA + bB → cC + dD: Rate = −(1/a)Δ[A]/Δt = −(1/b)Δ[B]/Δt = (1/c)Δ[C]/Δt = (1/d)Δ[D]/Δt.सामान्य नियम aA + bB → cC + dD के लिए: वेग = −(1/a)Δ[A]/Δt = −(1/b)Δ[B]/Δt = (1/c)Δ[C]/Δt = (1/d)Δ[D]/Δt।General rule aA + bB → cC + dD ke liye: Rate = −(1/a)Δ[A]/Δt = −(1/b)Δ[B]/Δt = (1/c)Δ[C]/Δt = (1/d)Δ[D]/Δt.

For a gaseous reaction at constant temperature, concentration is directly proportional to partial pressure, so the rate can also be expressed as the rate of change of partial pressure of a reactant or product. Constant temperature par gaseous reaction mein concentration partial pressure ke directly proportional hoti hai, isliye rate ko reactant ya product ke partial pressure ke badlav ki dar ke roop mein bhi likh sakte hain.

Average rate = −½ Δ[N₂O₅]/Δt = −½ × (2.08 − 2.33) ÷ 184 = 6.79 × 10⁻⁴ mol L⁻¹ min⁻¹ = 6.79 × 10⁻⁴ × 60 = 4.07 × 10⁻² mol L⁻¹ h⁻¹ = 6.79 × 10⁻⁴ ÷ 60 = 1.13 × 10⁻⁵ mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹. 3.2Factors Influencing Rate of a Reactionअभिक्रिया के वेग को प्रभावित करने वाले कारकReaction ke rate ko affect karne wale factors

The rate of a reaction depends on experimental conditions: concentration of reactants (pressure for gases), temperature and catalyst. Reaction ka rate experimental conditions par depend karta hai: reactants ki concentration (gases ke liye pressure), temperature aur catalyst.

3.2.1Dependence of Rate on Concentrationवेग की सांद्रता पर निर्भरताRate ki concentration par dependence

At a given temperature the rate may depend on the concentration of one or more reactants (and sometimes products). The representation of rate in terms of concentrations of reactants is called the rate law; it is also called the rate equation or rate expression. Diye temperature par rate ek ya zyada reactants (kabhi products) ki concentration par depend kar sakta hai. Reactants ki concentrations ke roop mein rate likhna rate law kehlata hai; ise rate equation ya rate expression bhi kehte hain.

Rate expression aur rate constant

Table 3.1 shows the rate falls as reactant concentration falls; conversely, rates generally rise when reactant concentrations rise. For a general reaction aA + bB → cC + dD, Rate ∝ [A]x[B]y, i.e. Rate = k[A]x[B]y, where the exponents x and y may or may not equal the coefficients a and b. The form −d[R]/dt = k[A]x[B]y is the differential rate equation, and k is the rate constant (k). सामान्य अभिक्रिया aA + bB → cC + dD के लिए वेग ∝ [A]x[B]y, अर्थात वेग = k[A]x[B]y, जहाँ घातांक x और y, गुणांक a और b के बराबर हो भी सकते हैं और नहीं भी। Table 3.1 dikhati hai ki reactant ki concentration ghatne par rate ghatta hai; ulta, concentration badhne par rate aam taur par badhta hai. General reaction aA + bB → cC + dD ke liye Rate ∝ [A]x[B]y, yaani Rate = k[A]x[B]y, jahan powers x aur y coefficients a aur b ke barabar ho bhi sakte hain aur nahi bhi. Form −d[R]/dt = k[A]x[B]y differential rate equation hai aur k rate constant hai.

Rate law (rate expression). x, y are found experimentally — NOT from the balanced equation. Rate law (rate expression). x, y experiment se milte hain — balanced equation se NAHI.

How the rate law is found (NCERT Table 3.2): for 2NO(g) + O₂(g) → 2NO₂(g), the initial rate is measured while changing one concentration and keeping the other fixed. Doubling [NO] (O₂ fixed) raises the rate 4 times (0.096 → 0.384 mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹), so rate ∝ [NO]². Doubling [O₂] (NO fixed) doubles the rate, so rate ∝ [O₂]. Hence Rate = k[NO]²[O₂]. Here the exponents happen to equal the coefficients. [NO] दोगुना (O₂ स्थिर) करने पर वेग 4 गुना (0.096 → 0.384 mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹), अतः वेग ∝ [NO]²। इसलिए वेग = k[NO]²[O₂]। Rate law kaise nikaalte hain (NCERT Table 3.2): 2NO(g) + O₂(g) → 2NO₂(g) ke liye ek concentration badalte hue aur doosri fixed rakhte hue initial rate naapa jata hai. [NO] double (O₂ fixed) karne par rate 4 guna (0.096 → 0.384 mol L⁻¹ s⁻¹), isliye rate ∝ [NO]². [O₂] double (NO fixed) karne par rate double, isliye rate ∝ [O₂]. Isliye Rate = k[NO]²[O₂]. Yahan powers sanyog se coefficients ke barabar hain.

In other reactions the exponents are not the stoichiometric coefficients: CHCl₃ + Cl₂ → CCl₄ + HCl has Rate = k[CHCl₃][Cl₂]1/2, and CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O → CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH has Rate = k[CH₃COOC₂H₅]¹[H₂O]⁰. So the rate law cannot be predicted by looking at the balanced equation; it must be determined experimentally. Doosre reactions mein powers stoichiometric coefficients nahi hote: CHCl₃ + Cl₂ → CCl₄ + HCl ke liye Rate = k[CHCl₃][Cl₂]1/2, aur CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O → CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH ke liye Rate = k[CH₃COOC₂H₅]¹[H₂O]⁰. Isliye rate law balanced equation dekhkar predict nahi ho sakta; ise experiment se hi nikaalna padta hai.

3.2.3Order of a Reactionअभिक्रिया की कोटिReaction ka order

In Rate = k[A]x[B]y, x and y show how sensitive the rate is to changes in [A] and [B]. x is the order with respect to A, y the order with respect to B, and x + y is the overall order. Thus the sum of powers of the concentration terms in the rate law expression is called the order of reaction. It can be 0, 1, 2, 3 and even a fraction. A zero order reaction means the rate is independent of reactant concentration.वेग = k[A]x[B]y में x और y बताते हैं कि वेग [A] और [B] के परिवर्तन के प्रति कितना संवेदनशील है। Rate = k[A]x[B]y mein x aur y batate hain ki rate [A] aur [B] ke badlav ke prati kitna sensitive hai. x, A ke respect mein order hai, y, B ke respect mein, aur x + y overall order hai. Yaani rate law mein concentration terms ki powers ka total order of reaction kehlata hai. Ye 0, 1, 2, 3 aur fraction bhi ho sakta hai. Zero order ka matlab hai rate reactant concentration se independent hai.

NCERT Example 3.3 — overall order(a) Rate = k[A]1/2[B]3/2: order = ½ + 3/2 = 2 (second order). (b) Rate = k[A]3/2[B]−1: order = 3/2 + (−1) = ½ (half order).NCERT उदाहरण 3.3 — कुल कोटि(a) वेग = k[A]1/2[B]3/2: कोटि = ½ + 3/2 = 2 (द्वितीय कोटि)। NCERT Example 3.3 — overall order(a) Rate = k[A]1/2[B]3/2: order = ½ + 3/2 = 2 (second order). (b) Rate = k[A]3/2[B]−1: order = 3/2 + (−1) = ½ (half order).

A balanced equation rarely shows how a reaction actually happens, since few reactions finish in one step. Reactions taking place in one step are elementary reactions. When a sequence of elementary reactions (the mechanism) gives the products, the reaction is a complex reaction. Complex reactions may be consecutive (oxidation of ethane to CO₂ and H₂O passes through alcohol, aldehyde and acid), reverse reactions, or side reactions (nitration of phenol gives o-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol). Balanced equation shayad hi batata hai ki reaction asal mein kaise hota hai, kyunki kam hi reactions ek step mein poore hote hain. Ek step mein hone wale reactions elementary reactions hain. Jab elementary reactions ka sequence (mechanism) products deta hai, to woh complex reaction hai. Complex reactions consecutive (ethane ka CO₂ aur H₂O mein oxidation alcohol, aldehyde aur acid se hokar), reverse ya side reactions (phenol ka nitration o-nitrophenol aur p-nitrophenol deta hai) ho sakte hain.

3.2.4Molecularity of a Reactionअभिक्रिया की आण्विकताReaction ki molecularity

The number of reacting species (atoms, ions or molecules) taking part in an elementary reaction, which must collide simultaneously to bring about the reaction, is its molecularity. Unimolecular: NH₄NO₂ → N₂ + 2H₂O. Bimolecular: 2HI → H₂ + I₂. Trimolecular (termolecular): 2NO + O₂ → 2NO₂. More than three molecules colliding at once is very unlikely, so molecularity-three reactions are rare and slow. एकाणुक: NH₄NO₂ → N₂ + 2H₂O। द्विअणुक: 2HI → H₂ + I₂। Kisi elementary reaction mein hissa lene wali species (atoms, ions ya molecules) ki ginti, jinhein reaction ke liye ek saath takraana hota hai, uski molecularity hai. Unimolecular: NH₄NO₂ → N₂ + 2H₂O. Bimolecular: 2HI → H₂ + I₂. Trimolecular (termolecular): 2NO + O₂ → 2NO₂. Teen se zyada molecules ka ek saath takraana bahut unlikely hai, isliye molecularity teen wale reactions rare aur slow hote hain.

So reactions with many molecules in the equation must go in steps. KClO₃ + 6FeSO₄ + 3H₂SO₄ → KCl + 3Fe₂(SO₄)₃ + 3H₂O looks like a tenth-order reaction but is actually second order — it takes place in several steps. Which step controls the overall rate? Like a relay team that is only as fast as its slowest runner, the overall rate is controlled by the slowest step, the rate determining step. KClO₃ + 6FeSO₄ + 3H₂SO₄ → KCl + 3Fe₂(SO₄)₃ + 3H₂O Isliye equation mein bahut molecules wale reactions steps mein hote hain. KClO₃ + 6FeSO₄ + 3H₂SO₄ → KCl + 3Fe₂(SO₄)₃ + 3H₂O dasvi order jaisa lagta hai par asal mein second order hai — ye kai steps mein hota hai. Overall rate kaun sa step control karta hai? Jaise relay team apne sabse slow runner jitni hi tez hoti hai, overall rate sabse slow step, rate determining step, control karta hai.

Example — decomposition of H₂O₂ catalysed by I⁻ in alkaline medium: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂ (I⁻, alkaline medium). Experimentally, Rate = −d[H₂O₂]/dt = k[H₂O₂][I⁻] — first order in both. Evidence suggests two steps: (1) H₂O₂ + I⁻ → H₂O + IO⁻ and (2) H₂O₂ + IO⁻ → H₂O + I⁻ + O₂. Both are bimolecular elementary steps. IO⁻ is an intermediate — formed during the reaction but absent from the overall equation. Step 1, being slow, is the rate determining step (see the energy diagram).उदाहरण — क्षारीय माध्यम में I⁻ द्वारा उत्प्रेरित H₂O₂ का अपघटन: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂ (I⁻, क्षारीय माध्यम)। प्रमाण दो पद बताते हैं: (1) H₂O₂ + I⁻ → H₂O + IO⁻ और (2) H₂O₂ + IO⁻ → H₂O + I⁻ + O₂। Example — alkaline medium mein I⁻ se catalysed H₂O₂ ka decomposition: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂ (I⁻, alkaline medium). Experiment se Rate = −d[H₂O₂]/dt = k[H₂O₂][I⁻] — dono ke liye first order. Evidence do steps batata hai: (1) H₂O₂ + I⁻ → H₂O + IO⁻ aur (2) H₂O₂ + IO⁻ → H₂O + I⁻ + O₂. Dono bimolecular elementary steps hain. IO⁻ intermediate hai — reaction ke dauraan banta hai par overall equation mein nahi. Step 1 slow hone se rate determining step hai (energy diagram dekhiye).

Order vs molecularity — the three NCERT conclusions(i) Order is an experimental quantity; it can be zero and even a fraction, but molecularity cannot be zero or a non-integer. (ii) Order applies to elementary and complex reactions; molecularity applies only to elementary reactions — for a complex reaction it has no meaning. (iii) For a complex reaction, order is given by the slowest step, and the molecularity of the slowest step is the same as the order of the overall reaction. Order vs molecularity — NCERT ke teen conclusions(i) Order ek experimental quantity hai; ye zero aur fraction bhi ho sakta hai, par molecularity zero ya non-integer nahi ho sakti. Integrated rate equations

The concentration dependence of rate is the differential rate equation. Measuring instantaneous rates (slopes of tangents) is not always convenient, so we integrate the differential equation to get a relation between directly measured data — concentrations at different times — and the rate constant. The integrated equations differ for different orders; NCERT derives them for zero and first order only. Rate ki concentration par dependence differential rate equation hai. Zero order reactions

The rate is proportional to the zero power of reactant concentration. For R → P: Rate = −d[R]/dt = k[R]⁰ = k. So d[R] = −k dt. Integrating: [R] = −kt + I. At t = 0, [R] = [R]₀, so I = [R]₀. Zero order reactions are relatively uncommon but occur under special conditions — some enzyme-catalysed reactions and reactions on metal surfaces. The decomposition of gaseous ammonia on a hot platinum surface at high pressure is zero order: 2NH₃(g) → N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) (1130 K, Pt catalyst), Rate = k[NH₃]⁰ = k. At high pressure the metal surface is saturated with gas molecules, so changing conditions cannot change the amount of ammonia on the surface — the rate becomes independent of concentration. The thermal decomposition of HI on a gold surface is another zero order example. Zero order reactions kam hain par special conditions mein hote hain — kuch enzyme catalysed reactions aur metal surfaces par hone wale reactions. The half-life (t½) of a reaction is the time in which the concentration of a reactant is reduced to one half of its initial concentration; it is written t½. Pseudo first order reaction

The order of a reaction is sometimes altered by conditions. Hydrolysis of ethyl acetate is really a second order reaction — both ethyl acetate and water affect the rate. But water is taken in large excess, so its concentration hardly changes during the reaction. Hydrolysing 0.01 mol of ethyl acetate with 10 mol of water: at t = 0 → 0.01 mol ester, 10 mol water; at completion → 0 mol ester, 9.99 mol water, 0.01 mol CH₃COOH, 0.01 mol C₂H₅OH. Water changes only from 10 to 9.99 mol, so the reaction behaves as first order: Rate = k′[CH₃COOC₂H₅], where k′ = k[H₂O]. Such reactions are pseudo first order reactions. Reaction ka order kabhi-kabhi conditions se badal jata hai. 3.4Temperature Dependence of the Rate of a Reactionअभिक्रिया के वेग की ताप पर निर्भरताReaction rate ki temperature par dependence

Most reactions speed up when heated. For the decomposition of N₂O₅, the time for half the material to decompose is 12 min at 50 °C, 5 h at 25 °C and 10 days at 0 °C. A mixture of KMnO₄ and oxalic acid (H₂C₂O₄) gets decolourised faster at a higher temperature. For a chemical reaction, a rise of 10° nearly doubles the rate constant. Zyada tar reactions garam karne par tez ho jate hain. N₂O₅ ke decomposition mein aadhe material ke decompose hone ka time 50 °C par 12 min, 25 °C par 5 h aur 0 °C par 10 din hai. KMnO₄ aur oxalic acid (H₂C₂O₄) ka mixture zyada temperature par jaldi decolourise hota hai. Kisi chemical reaction mein temperature 10° badhane par rate constant lagbhag double ho jata hai.

The temperature dependence is explained accurately by the Arrhenius equation. It was first proposed by the Dutch chemist J.H. van’t Hoff, and the Swedish chemist Arrhenius provided its physical justification and interpretation. Take H₂(g) + I₂(g) → 2HI(g). According to Arrhenius, it happens only when an H₂ molecule and an I₂ molecule collide to form an unstable intermediate (NCERT Fig 3.6). It exists for a very short time and breaks up into two HI molecules. The energy needed to form this intermediate, called the activated complex (C), is the activation energy (Eₐ).H₂(g) + I₂(g) → 2HI(g) लीजिए। H₂(g) + I₂(g) → 2HI(g) lijiye. Arrhenius ke anusaar ye tabhi hota hai jab H₂ aur I₂ ka ek-ek molecule takraakar ek unstable intermediate banaye (NCERT Fig 3.6). Ye bahut kam time rehta hai aur do HI molecules mein toot jata hai. When the temperature is raised, the maximum of the curve moves to higher energy and the curve broadens (spreads to the right), so a greater proportion of molecules have much higher energies. The area under the curve stays constant because total probability is always one. Marking Eₐ on the curve ([[k-mbT|NCERT Fig 3.9]]): at (t + 10) the area for molecules with energy ≥ Eₐ roughly doubles, so the rate roughly doubles. In the Arrhenius equation, e−Eₐ/RT is the fraction of molecules with kinetic energy greater than Eₐ. Temperature badhane par curve ka maximum zyada energy ki taraf khisakta hai aur curve phail jata hai (right ki taraf), isliye bahut zyada energy wale molecules ka proportion badhta hai. Curve par Eₐ mark karne par ([[k-mbT|NCERT Fig 3.9]]): (t + 10) par Eₐ ya zyada energy wale molecules ka area lagbhag double ho jata hai, isliye rate lagbhag double. Catalyst ka effect

A catalyst increases the rate without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change. For example, MnO₂ greatly speeds up 2KClO₃ → 2KCl + 3O₂. A substance that reduces the rate is not called a catalyst — it is an inhibitor. Intermediate complex theory: the catalyst forms temporary bonds with the reactants, giving an intermediate complex of transitory existence, which decomposes to give the products and the catalyst back. Catalyst khud permanent chemical change ke bina rate badhata hai. Jaise MnO₂, 2KClO₃ → 2KCl + 3O₂ ko bahut tez karta hai. Rate ghatane wale substance ko catalyst nahi kehte — woh inhibitor hai. Intermediate complex theory: catalyst reactants se temporary bonds banakar short-lived intermediate complex banata hai, jo tootkar products deta hai aur catalyst wapas mil jata hai.

The catalyst provides an alternate pathway (mechanism) with lower activation energy, lowering the potential energy barrier (NCERT Fig 3.11). From the Arrhenius equation, the lower the Eₐ, the faster the reaction. A small amount of catalyst can catalyse a large amount of reactants. Catalyst kam activation energy wala alternate pathway (mechanism) deta hai aur potential energy barrier ko neecha karta hai (NCERT Fig 3.11). Arrhenius equation ke hisaab se Eₐ jitni kam, reaction utna tez.

What a catalyst does NOT do (NCERT)• It does not alter the Gibbs energy, ΔG, of a reaction. • It catalyses spontaneous reactions but does not catalyse non-spontaneous ones. • It does not change the equilibrium constant; it speeds up the forward and backward reactions to the same extent, so equilibrium is reached earlier but is the same. Catalyst kya NAHI karta (NCERT)• Ye reaction ki Gibbs energy ΔG nahi badalta. • Ye spontaneous reactions ko catalyse karta hai par non-spontaneous ko nahi. • Ye equilibrium constant nahi badalta; forward aur backward dono reactions ko barabar tez karta hai, isliye equilibrium jaldi aata hai par wahi rehta hai.

Chemical reactions ki collision theory

Collision theory, developed by Max Trautz and William Lewis in 1916–18, gives deeper insight into the energetic and mechanistic aspects of reactions. Based on the kinetic theory of gases, it treats reactant molecules as hard spheres and says a reaction occurs when molecules collide. The number of collisions per second per unit volume of the reaction mixture is the collision frequency (Z). Activation energy is the other factor that affects the rate. Max Trautz aur William Lewis (1916–18) ki collision theory reactions ke energy aur mechanism wale pehlu ko gehraai se samjhati hai. Kinetic theory of gases par based ye reactant molecules ko hard spheres maanti hai aur kehti hai ki reaction tab hota hai jab molecules takraate hain. Reaction mixture ke unit volume mein per second hone wale collisions ki ginti collision frequency (Z) hai. Activation energy rate ko affect karne wala doosra factor hai.

Rate = ZAB e−Eₐ/RT Rate = P ZAB e−Eₐ/RT
For a bimolecular elementary reaction A + B → Products (3.23). ZAB = collision frequency of A and B; e−Eₐ/RT = fraction of molecules with energy ≥ Eₐ; P = probability or steric factor. Comparing with Arrhenius, A is related to collision frequency. Bimolecular elementary reaction A + B → Products ke liye (3.23). ZAB = A aur B ki collision frequency; e−Eₐ/RT = Eₐ ya zyada energy wale molecules ka fraction; P = probability ya steric factor.

Equation 3.23 predicts rate constants fairly well for reactions of atoms or simple molecules, but complex molecules show large deviations, because not all collisions give products. Collisions in which molecules collide with sufficient kinetic energy (the threshold energy) and proper orientation, so that old bonds can break and new ones form, are effective collisions. (NCERT footnote: threshold energy = activation energy + energy possessed by the reacting species.) Equation 3.23 atoms ya simple molecules ke reactions ke rate constants theek-thaak batata hai, par complex molecules mein bada deviation dikhta hai, kyunki saare collisions products nahi dete. Woh collisions jinmein molecules kaafi kinetic energy (threshold energy) aur sahi orientation se takraayein, taaki purane bonds tootein aur naye banein, effective collisions hain. (NCERT footnote: threshold energy = activation energy + reacting species ki apni energy.)

For example, the formation of methanol from bromomethane (CH₃Br + OH⁻ → CH₃OH + Br⁻) depends on the orientation of the reactant molecules (NCERT Fig 3.12). Proper orientation leads to bond formation; improper orientation makes them simply bounce back and no products form. To account for this, a factor P, the probability or steric factor, is introduced. Thus in collision theory, activation energy and proper orientation together decide whether a collision is effective, and hence the rate. Example ke liye, bromomethane se methanol banna (CH₃Br + OH⁻ → CH₃OH + Br⁻) reactant molecules ke orientation par depend karta hai (NCERT Fig 3.12). Sahi orientation se bond banta hai; galat orientation mein molecules bas wapas uchhal jaate hain aur koi product nahi banta. Iske liye P, probability ya steric factor joda jata hai. Is tarah collision theory mein activation energy aur sahi orientation milkar decide karte hain ki collision effective hai ya nahi, aur isi se rate.
