Parts and what they mean
- d-block: groups 3–12 (d-ब्लॉक: वर्ग 3–12) — The large middle section between the s- and p-blocks. Inner (n–1)d orbitals are being filled.
- s-block (groups 1, 2) (s-ब्लॉक (वर्ग 1, 2)) — Last electron enters an ns orbital.
- p-block (groups 13–18) (p-ब्लॉक (वर्ग 13–18)) — Last electron enters an np orbital.
- 3d series: Sc to Zn (period 4) (3d श्रेणी: Sc से Zn (आवर्त 4)) — First transition series — the one NCERT studies in detail.
- 4d series: Y to Cd (period 5) (4d श्रेणी: Y से Cd (आवर्त 5)) — Second transition series.
- 5d series: La and Hf to Hg (period 6) (5d श्रेणी: La तथा Hf से Hg (आवर्त 6)) — Third series. The 14 lanthanoids come between La and Hf.
- 6d series: Ac and Rf to Cn (period 7) (6d श्रेणी: Ac तथा Rf से Cn (आवर्त 7)) — Fourth series; the 14 actinoids come between Ac and Rf.
- Group 12: Zn, Cd, Hg (and Cn) (वर्ग 12: Zn, Cd, Hg (और Cn)) — (n–1)d¹⁰ ns² in atom and in common ions — not transition metals, but studied with them.
- Lanthanoids: Ce to Lu (4f series) (लैंथेनॉयड: Ce से Lu (4f श्रेणी)) — 14 elements after lanthanum; 4f orbitals fill. Inner transition elements.
- Actinoids: Th to Lr (5f series) (ऐक्टिनॉयड: Th से Lr (5f श्रेणी)) — 14 elements after actinium; 5f orbitals fill. All radioactive.
