If an alien visited Earth, the huge variety of life would probably amaze it first. There are more than 20,000 species of ants, 3,00,000 species of beetles, 28,000 species of fishes and nearly 20,000 species of orchids. Biologists ask: why so many species, did such diversity always exist, how did it arise, why does it matter to the biosphere, and how do humans benefit from it? Ants ki 20,000 se zyada, beetles ki 3,00,000, fishes ki 28,000 aur orchids ki lagbhag 20,000 species hain. Biologists poochte hain: itni species kyun, kya ye diversity hamesha thi, kaise bani, biosphere ke liye kyun important hai, aur humans ko isse kya fayda hai?

Biodiversity

Diversity exists not only among species but at every level of biological organisation — from macromolecules in cells up to biomes. biodiversity is the term popularised by the sociobiologist Edward Wilson for this combined diversity. The three most important levels are:विविधता केवल जातियों में नहीं, जैविक संगठन के हर स्तर पर है — कोशिका के वृहत्-अणुओं से लेकर जीवोम तक। It took millions of years of evolution to build this diversity, but at present rates of species loss we could lose it in less than two centuries. That is why biodiversity and its conservation are now vital environmental issues of international concern. Ye diversity banne mein millions of years ka evolution laga, par abhi ki rate se hum ise do centuries se bhi kam mein kho sakte hain. Isliye biodiversity aur uska conservation aaj international level ke important environmental issues hain.

13.1.1How Many Species are there on Earth and How Many in India?

According to the IUCN (2004), slightly more than 1.5 million plant and animal species have been described so far. Nobody knows how many remain undiscovered. Biologists compare the temperate–tropical species richness of a well-studied insect group and extend that ratio to other groups. Some extreme estimates are 20 to 50 million, but Robert May’s more conservative, scientifically sound estimate is about 7 million species.IUCN IUCN (2004) ke according ab tak 1.5 million se thodi zyada plant aur animal species describe hui hain. Kitni abhi discover honi baaki hain, kisi ko pata nahi. Biologists ek well-studied insect group ki temperate–tropical species richness compare karke woh ratio baaki groups par lagate hain. Kuch extreme estimates 20 se 50 million hain, par Robert May ka conservative aur scientific estimate lagbhag 7 million hai.

Of all recorded species, more than 70 per cent are animals, while plants (including algae, fungi, bryophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms) are no more than 22 per cent. Among animals, insects are the richest group — more than 70 per cent, so 7 out of every 10 animals are insects. Fungi have more species than fishes, amphibians, reptiles and mammals put together.

India has only 2.4 per cent of the world’s land area but 8.1 per cent of global species diversity — making it one of the 12 mega diversity countries. About 45,000 plant species and twice as many animal species have been recorded here. If only 22 per cent of all species are recorded (May’s estimate), India probably has more than 1,00,000 plant and 3,00,000 animal species still undiscovered — and many may go extinct before we even find them. “Nature’s biological library is burning even before we catalogued the titles.” India ke paas duniya ki sirf 2.4 per cent land hai par 8.1 per cent species diversity — isliye ye 12 mega diversity countries mein se ek hai. Yahan lagbhag 45,000 plant species aur unse double animal species recorded hain. Agar sirf 22 per cent species hi recorded hain (May ka estimate), to India mein shayad 1,00,000 se zyada plant aur 3,00,000 se zyada animal species abhi discover honi baaki hain — aur kai discover hone se pehle hi extinct ho sakti hain.

Biodiversity ke patterns

(i) Latitudinal gradients. Diversity is uneven across the world. The best-known pattern is the latitudinal gradient: species diversity generally decreases as we move from the equator towards the poles. With very few exceptions, the tropics (23.5° N to 23.5° S) have more species than temperate or polar areas.(i) अक्षांशीय प्रवणता। (i) Latitudinal gradients. Diversity duniya bhar mein barabar nahi hai.

Birds show it clearly: Colombia, near the equator, has nearly 1,400 bird species; New York (41° N) has 105; Greenland (71° N) only 56. India, mostly in tropical latitudes, has more than 1,200. A tropical forest in Ecuador has up to 10 times as many vascular plant species as an equal temperate forest in the Midwest of the USA. The Amazonian rain forest has the greatest biodiversity on Earth: more than 40,000 species of plants, 3,000 of fishes, 1,300 of birds, 427 of mammals, 427 of amphibians, 378 of reptiles and more than 1,25,000 invertebrates — and perhaps at least two million insect species still undiscovered. Birds ise clearly dikhate hain: equator ke paas Colombia mein lagbhag 1,400 bird species; New York (41° N) mein 105; Greenland (71° N) mein sirf 56. Zyada tar tropical India mein 1,200 se zyada. Ecuador ke tropical forest mein USA ke Midwest ke same area wale temperate forest se 10 guna tak vascular plants. Amazon rain forest mein Earth par sabse zyada biodiversity: 40,000+ plants, 3,000 fishes, 1,300 birds, 427 mammals, 427 amphibians, 378 reptiles aur 1,25,000+ invertebrates — aur shayad kam se kam 2 million insect species abhi undiscovered.

Why are the tropics so rich? Three important hypotheses: (a) speciation is a function of time — unlike temperate regions with frequent past glaciations, the tropics stayed relatively undisturbed for millions of years, giving long evolutionary time; (b) tropical environments are less seasonal, more constant and predictable, which promotes niche specialisation and greater species diversity; (c) more solar energy in the tropics gives higher productivity, which might indirectly add to diversity. Tropics itne rich kyun? Teen main hypotheses: (a) speciation time ka function hai — temperate regions mein baar-baar glaciation hua, jabki tropics millions of years tak relatively undisturbed rahe, isliye evolution ko lamba time mila; (b) tropical environment kam seasonal, zyada constant aur predictable hai — isse niche specialisation aur zyada species diversity; (c) tropics mein zyada solar energy → zyada productivity → indirectly zyada diversity.

(ii) Species–area relationships. Exploring South American jungles, the German naturalist and geographer Alexander von Humboldt saw that within a region, species richness increased with the explored area — but only up to a limit. For many taxa (angiosperm plants, birds, bats, freshwater fishes) this relation is a rectangular hyperbola. On a logarithmic scale it becomes a straight line: log S = log C + Z log A, where S = species richness, A = area, Z = slope of the line (regression coefficient) and C = Y-intercept. (ii) Species–area relationships. South American jungles explore karte hue German naturalist aur geographer Alexander von Humboldt ne dekha ki ek region mein explored area badhne se species richness badhti hai — par ek limit tak. Kai taxa (angiosperm plants, birds, bats, freshwater fishes) mein ye relation rectangular hyperbola hai. Log scale par ye straight line ban jaata hai: log S = log C + Z log A — S = species richness, A = area, Z = slope (regression coefficient), C = Y-intercept.

Ecologists found that Z lies between 0.1 and 0.2 regardless of the group or region — plants in Britain, birds in California or molluscs in New York state give amazingly similar slopes. But for very large areas such as entire continents, the line is much steeper (Z = 0.6 to 1.2); for frugivorous (fruit-eating) birds and mammals in tropical forests of different continents, Z is 1.15. (NCERT asks: what do steeper slopes mean here?) (NCERT पूछता है: अधिक ढलान का यहाँ क्या अर्थ है?)Ecologists ne paaya ki Z 0.1 se 0.2 ke beech hota hai — group ya region koi bhi ho (Britain ke plants, California ke birds, New York ke molluscs — slopes almost same). Par poore continents jaise bahut bade areas mein line kaafi steep (Z = 0.6 se 1.2) hoti hai; alag continents ke tropical forests ke frugivorous (fruit khane wale) birds aur mammals mein Z = 1.15. (NCERT poochta hai: steeper slope ka matlab kya hai?)

13.1.3The Importance of Species Diversity to the Ecosystemपारितंत्र के लिए जातीय विविधता का महत्वEcosystem ke liye species diversity ka importance

Does the number of species matter for how an ecosystem works? Ecologists have no definitive answer, but for decades they believed that communities with more species are more stable. A stable community should not vary too much in productivity from year to year, should be resistant or resilient to occasional disturbances, and should resist invasion by alien species. Kya species ki ginti ecosystem ke kaam ke liye matter karti hai? Ecologists ke paas definite answer nahi, par decades se maana gaya ki zyada species wale communities zyada stable hote hain. Stable community ki productivity saal-dar-saal zyada na badle, woh occasional disturbances ko resist kare ya unse recover kare, aur alien species ke invasion ko resist kare.

David Tilman’s long-term outdoor-plot experiments give tentative answers: plots with more species showed less year-to-year variation in total biomass, and higher diversity gave higher productivity. We may not fully understand how, but rich biodiversity is essential for ecosystem health and for the survival of the human race. David Tilman ke long-term outdoor plot experiments se tentative answers mile: zyada species wale plots mein total biomass ka saal-dar-saal variation kam tha, aur zyada diversity se zyada productivity. Poora samjhein ya nahi, rich biodiversity ecosystem health aur human race ke survival ke liye zaroori hai.

Does losing a few species matter — one tree frog in the Western Ghats, or 15,000 instead of 20,000 ant species? Stanford ecologist Paul Ehrlich’s rivet popper hypothesis gives a perspective. In an airplane (ecosystem), thousands of rivets (species) hold the parts together. If passengers pop rivets to take home (species going extinct), safety may not suffer at first, but the plane becomes dangerously weak as more are removed. And which rivet matters: losing rivets on the wings (key species that drive major ecosystem functions) is far more serious than losing a few on the seats or windows.

Biodiversity ka loss

New species are hardly being added, but losses continue — and the accusing finger points at human activities. Human colonisation of tropical Pacific Islands is said to have caused the extinction of more than 2,000 native bird species. The IUCN Red List (2004) records 784 extinctions in the last 500 years (338 vertebrates, 359 invertebrates and 87 plants). Recent examples: the dodo (Mauritius), quagga (Africa), thylacine (Australia), Steller’s sea cow (Russia) and three subspecies of tiger (Bali, Javan, Caspian). The last twenty years alone saw 27 species disappear. IUCN Red List (2004) pichhle 500 saal mein 784 extinctions record karti hai (338 vertebrates, 359 invertebrates, 87 plants). Recent examples: dodo (Mauritius), quagga (Africa), thylacine (Australia), Steller’s sea cow (Russia) aur tiger ki teen subspecies (Bali, Javan, Caspian). Sirf pichhle 20 saal mein 27 species gayab.

Extinctions are not random — groups like amphibians seem more vulnerable. More than 15,500 species face the threat of extinction: 12% of birds, 23% of mammals, 32% of amphibians and 31% of gymnosperms. Fossils show five mass extinctions in more than 3 billion years. The present ‘Sixth Extinction’ differs in its rate — 100 to 1,000 times faster than in pre-human times, and we are responsible. If trends continue, nearly half of all species might be wiped out in the next 100 years. Extinctions random nahi — amphibians jaise groups zyada vulnerable. 1. Habitat loss and fragmentation — the most important cause. Tropical rain forests once covered more than 14% of Earth’s land; now no more than 6%. By the time you finish this chapter, another 1000 hectares will be gone. The Amazon (‘lungs of the planet’) is cleared for soya beans or grasslands for beef cattle. Pollution degrades habitats too. When large habitats break into fragments, mammals and birds needing large territories, and migratory animals, decline. Habitat loss aur fragmentation — sabse important cause. Ye chapter khatam karte-karte 1000 hectare aur kat jaayenge. 2. Over-exploitation — when ‘need’ turns to ‘greed’. Steller’s sea cow and the passenger pigeon were lost to over-exploitation in the last 500 years; many marine fish are over-harvested today. Over-exploitation — jab ‘need’ ‘greed’ ban jaaye. Steller’s sea cow aur passenger pigeon pichhle 500 saal mein over-exploitation se khatam; aaj kai marine fish over-harvest ho rahi hain.
  3. Alien species invasions — some introduced species turn invasive. The Nile perch introduced into Lake Victoria (east Africa) led to the extinction of more than 200 species of cichlid fish. Invasive weeds: carrot grass (Parthenium), Lantana and water hyacinth (Eichhornia). The illegal introduction of the African catfish Clarias gariepinus for aquaculture threatens our native catfishes. Alien species invasions — kuch laayi gayi species invasive ban jaati hain. Aquaculture ke liye illegal laayi gayi African catfish Clarias gariepinus hamari native catfishes ke liye khatra.
  4. Co-extinctions — when a species becomes extinct, species linked to it in an obligatory way also die out: a host fish and its unique parasites; a coevolved plant and its pollinator. Co-extinctions — ek species extinct ho to usse obligatory tarah judi species bhi: host fish aur uske unique parasites; coevolved plant aur uska pollinator.

Narrowly utilitarian: humans get countless direct economic benefits — food (cereals, pulses, fruits), firewood, fibre, construction material, industrial products (tannins, lubricants, dyes, resins, perfumes) and medicines. More than 25 per cent of drugs sold worldwide come from plants, and 25,000 plant species are used in traditional medicines of native peoples. With more bioprospecting, nations rich in biodiversity can expect enormous benefits. Narrowly utilitarian: humans ko direct economic benefits — food (cereals, pulses, fruits), firewood, fibre, construction material, industrial products (tannins, lubricants, dyes, resins, perfumes) aur medicines.

Broadly utilitarian: biodiversity drives ecosystem services. The Amazon forest is estimated to produce 20 per cent of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere through photosynthesis. Pollinators — bees, bumblebees, birds and bats — make fruits and seeds possible. There are intangible benefits too: walking through thick woods, spring flowers in bloom, a bulbul’s song in the morning. Can we put a price on these? Amazon forest photosynthesis se Earth ke atmosphere ki lagbhag 20 per cent oxygen banata hai (estimate). Pollinators — bees, bumblebees, birds aur bats — fruits aur seeds possible banate hain. Intangible benefits bhi: ghane jungle mein ghoomna, spring ke phool, subah bulbul ka gaana. Inki price lag sakti hai kya?

Ethical: we share the planet with millions of plant, animal and microbe species. Every species has an intrinsic value, even with no economic value to us. We have a moral duty to care for them and to pass on our biological legacy in good order to future generations. Ethical: hum Earth ko millions of plant, animal aur microbe species ke saath share karte hain. Unka khayal rakhna aur biological legacy achhi haalat mein aane wali generations ko dena hamara moral duty hai.

13.2.2How do we Conserve Biodiversity?

Protecting a whole ecosystem protects its biodiversity at all levels — we save the entire forest to save the tiger. This is in situ conservation (on site). When an organism is endangered / threatened and needs urgent help, ex situ conservation (off site) is the desirable approach. Poore ecosystem ko bachaane se uski har level ki biodiversity bachti hai — tiger bachaane ke liye poora forest bachaate hain. Ye in situ (on site) conservation hai. Jab koi organism endangered/threatened ho aur turant madad chahiye, to ex situ (off site) conservation sahi hai.

In situ conservation. Faced with the conflict between development and conservation, nations cannot save everything — species waiting to be saved far exceed the resources. Conservationists therefore picked biodiversity hotspots for maximum protection: regions with very high species richness and a high degree of endemism. First 25 were identified, then 9 more were added — 34 in all. Hotspots are also regions of accelerated habitat loss. Three of them cover India’s richest regions: Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma and Himalaya. All hotspots together cover less than 2 per cent of Earth’s land, yet hold an extremely high number of species; strict protection could cut ongoing mass extinctions by almost 30 per cent. In situ conservation. Development aur conservation ke takraav mein countries sab kuch nahi bacha sakte — bachaane wali species resources se kahin zyada hain. Isliye conservationists ne maximum protection ke liye biodiversity hotspots chune: bahut zyada species richness aur high endemism wale regions. Pehle 25, phir 9 aur — total 34. Ye fast habitat loss wale regions bhi hain. Inmein se teen India ke sabse rich regions cover karte hain: Western Ghats aur Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma aur Himalaya. Saare hotspots milkar Earth ki 2 per cent se kam land par hain, phir bhi bahut zyada species; strict protection se mass extinctions lagbhag 30 per cent kam ho sakte hain.

India also has a tradition of protecting nature. In many cultures, tracts of forest were set aside and all their trees and wildlife were venerated and fully protected. Such sacred groves are found in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya), the Aravalli Hills (Rajasthan), the Western Ghat regions of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and the Sarguja, Chanda and Bastar areas (Madhya Pradesh). In Meghalaya, sacred groves are the last refuges of many rare and threatened plants. India mein nature bachaane ki parampara bhi hai. Meghalaya mein ye kai rare aur threatened plants ki last refuge hain.

Ex situ conservation. Threatened animals and plants are taken out of their natural habitat and kept in special settings with special care — zoological parks, botanical gardens and wildlife safari parks. Many animals extinct in the wild still survive in zoos. Today, gametes of threatened species can be kept viable and fertile for long periods by cryopreservation; eggs can be fertilised in vitro; plants can be propagated by tissue culture; and seeds of different genetic strains of commercially important plants can be stored for long periods in seed banks. Ex situ conservation. Threatened animals aur plants ko natural habitat se nikaal kar special jagah special care mein rakhte hain — zoological parks, botanical gardens aur wildlife safari parks. Wild mein extinct kai animals zoos mein abhi bhi zinda hain. Aaj threatened species ke gametes cryopreservation se lambe time tak viable aur fertile rakhe ja sakte hain; eggs in vitro fertilise ho sakte hain; tissue culture se plants propagate; aur commercially important plants ke alag genetic strains ke seeds seed banks mein lambe time tak store.

Biodiversity knows no political boundaries, so its conservation is a shared responsibility of all nations. The historic Convention on Biological Diversity (‘The Earth Summit’), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, called on all nations to conserve biodiversity and use its benefits sustainably. In the follow-up World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, South Africa, 2002), 190 countries pledged to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010 at global, regional and local levels. Biodiversity political boundaries nahi jaanti, isliye iska conservation saare countries ki shared responsibility hai.
