Parts and their functions
- Rectangular hyperbola (normal axes) (आयताकार अतिपरवलय (सामान्य अक्ष)) — Humboldt: within a region, species richness rises with explored area — but only up to a limit. True for angiosperms, birds, bats and freshwater fishes.
- Straight line on log scale (लॉग पैमाने पर सीधी रेखा) — Plotted as log S against log A the relation is a straight line. Its slope Z lies between 0.1 and 0.2 regardless of group or region (plants in Britain, birds in California, molluscs in New York state).
- Very large areas: steeper slope (बहुत बड़े क्षेत्र: अधिक ढलान) — For entire continents Z is 0.6–1.2; for frugivorous (fruit-eating) birds and mammals in tropical forests of different continents it is 1.15.
- Species–area equation: log S = log C + Z log A (जाति–क्षेत्र समीकरण) — S = species richness, A = area, Z = slope of the line (regression coefficient), C = Y-intercept.
