An ecosystem is a working unit of nature in which living organisms interact with one another and with their physical surroundings. It can be as small as a pond or as big as a forest or a sea. Many ecologists treat the whole biosphere as one global ecosystem, made of all the local ecosystems on Earth. Ecosystem nature ki ek working unit hai — organisms aapas mein aur apne physical environment ke saath interact karte hain. Ye ek chhote pond jitna bhi ho sakta hai aur forest ya sea jitna bada bhi. Kai ecologists poore biosphere ko ek global ecosystem maante hain — Earth ke saare local ecosystems milkar.

Because the biosphere is too big to study at once, it is divided into two groups: terrestrial ecosystems (forest, grassland, desert) and aquatic ecosystems (pond, lake, wetland, river, estuary). Crop fields and an aquarium are man-made ecosystems. Biosphere ek saath padhne ke liye bahut bada hai, isliye do groups: terrestrial (forest, grassland, desert) aur aquatic (pond, lake, wetland, river, estuary). 12.1Ecosystem – Structure and Functionपारितंत्र – संरचना एवं कार्यEcosystem – Structure aur Function

Biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components interact and give every type of ecosystem its own physical structure. Listing and counting its plant and animal species gives its species composition. Biotic (living) aur abiotic (non-living) components ke interaction se har ecosystem ka apna physical structure banta hai. Uski plant aur animal species ko pehchanne aur ginne se species composition milti hai.

The vertical arrangement of species at different levels is called stratification. In a forest, trees form the top layer, shrubs the second, and herbs and grasses the bottom layers. Alag-alag levels par species ka vertical arrangement stratification kehlata hai. Pond — ek simple ecosystem

A pond is a shallow water body and a fairly self-sustaining, simple example. Its abiotic part is the water with dissolved inorganic and organic substances, and the rich soil deposit at the bottom. Solar input, the temperature cycle, day-length and climate control how fast the whole pond works. Pond ek shallow water body hai — kaafi self-sustaining aur simple example. The pond does what every ecosystem (and the whole biosphere) does: autotrophs use the sun’s radiant energy to turn inorganic matter into organic matter; heterotrophs eat the autotrophs; dead matter is decomposed and mineralised so autotrophs can reuse it — again and again. Energy moves one way (unidirectional) to higher trophic levels and is lost as heat to the environment. Pond wahi karta hai jo har ecosystem karta hai: autotrophs sun ki energy se inorganic ko organic matter banate hain; heterotrophs autotrophs ko khaate hain; dead matter decompose aur mineralise hota hai taaki autotrophs use phir se use karein — baar-baar. Energy one-way upar ke trophic levels ki taraf jaati hai aur heat banke environment mein lose hoti hai.

Energy flows only one way and leaves as heat — it is never recycled. Nutrients vs energyNutrients baar-baar use hote hain (cycle). 12.2Productivityउत्पादकताProductivity

Every ecosystem needs a constant input of solar energy. primary production is the amount of biomass (organic matter) made per unit area over a time period by plants during photosynthesis. It is expressed as weight (g m⁻²) or energy (kcal m⁻²). Primary production = plants photosynthesis se per unit area ek time period mein jitna biomass (organic matter) banate hain. Units: weight (g m⁻²) ya energy (kcal m⁻²).

The rate of biomass production is called productivity, written as g m⁻² yr⁻¹ or (kcal m⁻²) yr⁻¹, so that different ecosystems can be compared. Biomass banne ki rate ko productivity kehte hain — g m⁻² yr⁻¹ ya (kcal m⁻²) yr⁻¹ mein, taaki alag ecosystems compare ho sakein.

Gross primary productivity (GPP) is the rate of production of organic matter in photosynthesis. Plants use a good part of GPP in their own respiration (R). What is left is net primary productivity (NPP): GPP − R = NPP. NPP is the biomass available to heterotrophs — herbivores and decomposers. secondary productivity is the rate at which consumers form new organic matter. Gross primary productivity (GPP) = photosynthesis mein organic matter banne ki rate. Primary productivity depends on the plant species of an area, on environmental factors, on the availability of nutrients and on the photosynthetic capacity of plants — so it differs from one ecosystem to another. The annual NPP of the whole biosphere is about 170 billion tons (dry weight) of organic matter. Oceans cover about 70 per cent of the surface, yet their productivity is only 55 billion tons; the rest comes from land. Primary productivity depend karti hai area ki plant species, environmental factors, nutrients ki availability aur plants ki photosynthetic capacity par — isliye har ecosystem mein alag. 12.3DecompositionअपघटनDecomposition

The earthworm is called the farmer’s ‘friend’ because it helps break down complex organic matter and loosens the soil. In the same way, decomposers break complex organic matter into inorganic substances — carbon dioxide, water and nutrients. This process is decomposition. Earthworm ko farmer ka ‘friend’ kehte hain kyunki ye complex organic matter todne aur soil loose karne mein help karta hai. Waise hi decomposers complex organic matter ko inorganic substances — CO₂, water aur nutrients — mein todte hain. Ye process decomposition hai.

Detritus — dead plant remains such as leaves, bark and flowers, and dead remains of animals including fecal matter — is the raw material for decomposition. The important steps are fragmentation, leaching, catabolism, humification and mineralisation. 2. All at onceAll these steps work at the same time on the detritus. Humification and mineralisation happen during decomposition in the soil. (The NCERT summary mentions only three processes — fragmentation, leaching and catabolism — but the chapter text lists five steps.) Sab ek saathYe saare steps detritus par ek hi time chalte hain. Humification aur mineralisation soil mein decomposition ke dauraan hote hain. (NCERT summary mein sirf teen processes — fragmentation, leaching, catabolism — likhe hain, par text mein paanch steps hain.)

Decomposition is largely an oxygen-requiring process. Its rate depends on the chemical make-up of the detritus and on climate. In the same climate, detritus rich in lignin and chitin decomposes slowly, while detritus rich in nitrogen and water-soluble substances like sugars decomposes quickly. Decomposition mostly oxygen-requiring process hai. Iski rate detritus ki chemical composition aur climate par depend karti hai. Same climate mein lignin aur chitin wala detritus slowly, aur nitrogen + sugars jaise water-soluble substances wala jaldi decompose hota hai.

Temperature and soil moisture are the most important climatic factors, because they control the activity of soil microbes. A warm and moist environment favours decomposition; low temperature and anaerobiosis (no oxygen) slow it down, so organic matter builds up. Temperature aur soil moisture sabse important climatic factors hain, kyunki ye soil microbes ki activity control karte hain. Warm aur moist environment decomposition badhata hai; low temperature aur anaerobiosis (oxygen nahi) ise rokte hain, aur organic matter jama ho jaata hai.

12.4Energy Flowऊर्जा प्रवाहEnergy Flow

Except for the deep-sea hydro-thermal ecosystem, the sun is the only source of energy for all ecosystems on Earth. Less than 50 per cent of the incident solar radiation is photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Plants capture only 2–10 per cent of the PAR, and this small amount of energy runs the entire living world. Deep-sea hydro-thermal ecosystem ko chhodkar Earth ke saare ecosystems ka ek hi energy source hai — sun. Incident solar radiation ka 50 per cent se kam part photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) hai. Energy flow through trophic levelsNCERT Fig 12.3 · 8 tappable parts · 7 stepsOpen

All organisms depend on producers for food, directly or indirectly, so energy flows one way — from the sun to producers and then to consumers (NCERT asks: is this in keeping with the first law of thermodynamics?). Ecosystems also obey the second law of thermodynamics: they need a constant supply of energy to make their molecules and to counter the universal tendency towards increasing disorder. Saare organisms food ke liye directly ya indirectly producers par depend karte hain, isliye energy one-way flow karti hai — sun → producers → consumers (NCERT poochta hai: kya ye first law of thermodynamics ke according hai?). Ecosystems second law of thermodynamics bhi follow karte hain: molecules banane aur badhti disorder se ladne ke liye unhe constant energy supply chahiye.

Green plants are the producers. On land the major producers are herbaceous and woody plants; in water they are phytoplankton, algae and higher plants. No energy trapped in an organism stays there forever — it is either passed on to a consumer or the organism dies. Death of an organism is the beginning of the detritus food chain/web. Green plants producers hain. Land par main producers herbaceous aur woody plants; water mein phytoplankton, algae aur higher plants. Kisi organism mein trapped energy hamesha wahan nahi rehti — ya to consumer ko jaati hai ya organism mar jaata hai. Organism ki death = detritus food chain/web ki shuruaat.

Animals depend on plants for food, so they are consumers (heterotrophs). Those that eat plants are primary consumers — the herbivores (insects, birds and mammals on land; molluscs in water). Animals that eat the herbivores are secondary consumers, more correctly primary carnivores; those that eat primary carnivores are secondary carnivores. Tertiary consumers can also exist. Animals food ke liye plants par depend karte hain, isliye consumers (heterotrophs) hain. Plants khane wale primary consumers — herbivores (land par insects, birds, mammals; water mein molluscs). Herbivores ko khane wale secondary consumers, sahi naam primary carnivores; unhe khane wale secondary carnivores. Tertiary consumers bhi ho sakte hain.

A simple grazing food chain (GFC): grass (producer) → goat (primary consumer) → man (secondary consumer). The detritus food chain (DFC) begins with dead organic matter and is made of decomposers — heterotrophs, mainly fungi and bacteria, also called saprotrophs (sapro: to decompose). They secrete digestive enzymes that break dead and waste material into simple inorganic materials, which they then absorb. Simple grazing food chain (GFC): grass (producer) → goat (primary consumer) → man (secondary consumer). Ye digestive enzymes chhodkar dead aur waste material ko simple inorganic materials mein todte hain, phir absorb karte hain.

In an aquatic ecosystem, the GFC is the major path for energy flow. On land, a much larger fraction of energy flows through the DFC than through the GFC. The two chains connect at some levels: some DFC organisms are prey for GFC animals, and some animals like cockroaches and crows are omnivores. These natural links turn food chains into a food web. (NCERT asks: how would you classify human beings?) (NCERT पूछता है: मनुष्य को आप कैसे वर्गीकृत करेंगे?)Aquatic ecosystem mein energy flow ka main raasta GFC hai. Dono chains kuch levels par judti hain: DFC ke kuch organisms GFC animals ka prey bante hain, aur cockroach, crow jaise kuch animals omnivores hain. Ye natural links food chains ko food web bana dete hain. (NCERT poochta hai: humans ko kaise classify karoge?)

Based on the source of their food, organisms occupy a specific place in the food chain — their trophic level. Producers are the first trophic level, herbivores (primary consumers) the second, carnivores (secondary consumers) the third, and top carnivores the fourth. Food ke source ke hisaab se organisms food chain mein ek fixed jagah lete hain — yahi unka trophic level hai. The amount of energy decreases at each successive trophic level. When any organism dies it becomes detritus (dead biomass), an energy source for decomposers. Each trophic level depends on the level below it for energy. Har agle trophic level par energy kam hoti jaati hai. Koi bhi organism marne par detritus (dead biomass) ban jaata hai — decomposers ka energy source. Har level energy ke liye apne neeche wale level par depend karta hai.

Each trophic level has a certain mass of living material at a particular time, called the standing crop. It is measured as the mass of living organisms (biomass) or as their number in a unit area. Biomass can be fresh or dry weight — dry weight is more accurate (NCERT asks: why?). ।Har trophic level par ek particular time pe living material ki ek quantity hoti hai — standing crop.

The number of trophic levels in a grazing food chain is limited because energy transfer follows the 10 per cent law: only about 10 per cent of the energy passes from one level to the next. So in nature we find levels such as producer → herbivore → primary carnivore → secondary carnivore. NCERT Fig 12.3 (NCERT asks: is there such a limit in a detritus food chain?) (NCERT पूछता है: क्या अपरद खाद्य शृंखला में भी ऐसी सीमा है?)Grazing food chain mein trophic levels limited hain kyunki energy transfer 10 per cent law follow karta hai: ek level se agle tak sirf ~10 per cent energy jaati hai. Isliye nature mein producer → herbivore → primary carnivore → secondary carnivore jaise levels milte hain. (NCERT poochta hai: kya detritus food chain mein bhi aisi limit hai?)

Quick checkIf producers hold 10,000 J, herbivores get about 1000 J, primary carnivores about 100 J and secondary carnivores about 10 J.जल्दी जाँचेंउत्पादकों में 10,000 J हो, तो शाकाहारियों को लगभग 1000 J, प्राथमिक मांसाहारियों को 100 J और द्वितीयक मांसाहारियों को 10 J।Quick checkProducers mein 10,000 J ho to herbivores ko ~1000 J, primary carnivores ko ~100 J, secondary carnivores ko ~10 J.

12.5Ecological Pyramidsपारिस्थितिक पिरामिडEcological Pyramids

A pyramid is broad at the base and narrow at the apex. We get a similar shape when we show the food or energy relationship between organisms at different trophic levels — in terms of number, biomass or energy. The base of every ecological pyramid is the producers (first trophic level); the apex is the tertiary or top consumer. Three types are usually studied: pyramid of number, of biomass and of energy. Pyramid ka base broad aur apex narrow hota hai. Alag trophic levels ke organisms ka food ya energy relation number, biomass ya energy mein dikhayein to aisa hi shape banta hai. Har ecological pyramid ka base producers (first trophic level) aur apex tertiary/top consumer. Teen types padhte hain: pyramid of number, biomass aur energy.

Pyramid of numbers in a grassland: about 6 million plants (5,842,000) support 708,000 primary consumers, 354,000 secondary consumers and only 3 top carnivores — an upright pyramid. Grassland ka pyramid of numbers: lagbhag 6 million plants (5,842,000) par 708,000 primary consumers, 354,000 secondary consumers aur sirf 3 top carnivores — upright pyramid.

Pyramid of biomass: biomass falls sharply at higher levels — producers 809, primary consumers 37, secondary consumers 11, tertiary consumers 1.5 (dry weight, kg m⁻²). Pyramid of biomass: upar ke levels par biomass tezi se ghatta hai — producers 809, primary consumers 37, secondary 11, tertiary 1.5 (dry weight, kg m⁻²).

Any calculation of energy, biomass or numbers must include all organisms at that trophic level — a few individuals cannot support a general rule. Also, a given organism may occupy more than one trophic level at the same time: a trophic level is a functional level, not a species. A sparrow is a primary consumer when it eats seeds, fruits and peas, and a secondary consumer when it eats insects and worms. (NCERT asks: at how many trophic levels do human beings function?) (NCERT पूछता है: मनुष्य कितने पोषण स्तरों पर कार्य करता है?)Energy, biomass ya number ki koi bhi calculation us trophic level ke saare organisms ko lekar honi chahiye — kuch individuals se general rule nahi banta. Ek organism ek saath ek se zyada trophic levels par ho sakta hai: trophic level ek functional level hai, species nahi. Sparrow seeds, fruits, peas khaye to primary consumer, insects aur worms khaye to secondary consumer. (NCERT poochta hai: humans kitne trophic levels par function karte hain?)

In most ecosystems all three pyramids are upright: producers outnumber and outweigh herbivores, which outnumber and outweigh carnivores; and energy at a lower level is always more than at a higher one. There are exceptions — count the insects feeding on one big tree, then the small birds eating those insects, then the larger birds eating the small birds, and draw the shape you get. Zyada tar ecosystems mein teenon pyramids upright hote hain: producers number aur biomass mein herbivores se zyada, herbivores carnivores se zyada; aur neeche ke level par energy hamesha zyada. Exceptions bhi hain — ek bade tree par insects, unhe khane wale small birds, aur small birds ko khane wale bade birds gino aur shape banao.

The pyramid of biomass in the sea is generally inverted: the biomass of fishes far exceeds that of phytoplankton. In NCERT’s figure, a small standing crop of phytoplankton (4) supports a large standing crop of zooplankton (21). NCERT calls this a paradox and asks you to explain it. Sea ka pyramid of biomass aksar inverted hota hai: fishes ka biomass phytoplankton se kaafi zyada. NCERT figure mein phytoplankton ki chhoti standing crop (4) zooplankton ki badi standing crop (21) ko support karti hai. NCERT ise paradox kehkar explain karne ko kehta hai.

One way to explain itStanding crop is the biomass present at one moment. Phytoplankton are eaten almost as fast as they grow and multiply, so at any moment their stock looks small even though, over time, they produce much more. (This is our explanation; NCERT leaves the question open.) Ek explanationStanding crop ek moment ka biomass hai. Phytoplankton lagbhag utni hi jaldi khaaye jaate hain jitni jaldi badhte hain, isliye kisi bhi moment unka stock kam dikhta hai — par time ke saath woh kaafi zyada banate hain. (Ye hamari explanation hai; NCERT ne question open chhoda hai.)

The pyramid of energy is always upright and can never be inverted, because some energy is always lost as heat at every step. Each bar shows the energy at a trophic level in a given time or annually per unit area. In NCERT’s ideal example, of 1,000,000 J of sunlight the producers turn only 1% into NPP (10,000 J); then 1000 J, 100 J and 10 J reach the next levels. Pyramid of energy hamesha upright, kabhi inverted nahi, kyunki har step par kuch energy heat banke lose hoti hai. Har bar ek trophic level ki energy dikhata hai — ek given time ya annually, per unit area. NCERT ke ideal example mein 1,000,000 J sunlight mein se producers sirf 1% ko NPP (10,000 J) banate hain; phir 1000 J, 100 J, 10 J agle levels tak.

Limitations of ecological pyramids(1) They do not account for the same species belonging to two or more trophic levels. (2) They assume a simple food chain — something that almost never exists in nature — and cannot show a food web. (3) Saprophytes get no place in them, even though they play a vital role. Ecological pyramids ki limitations(1) Same species ka do ya zyada trophic levels par hona nahi dikhate. (2) Simple food chain maante hain — jo nature mein lagbhag kabhi nahi hoti — aur food web nahi dikha sakte. (3) Saprophytes ko koi jagah nahi milti, jabki unka role bahut important hai.

The summary adds two ideas. nutrient cycling is the storage and movement of nutrient elements through an ecosystem; nutrients are used again and again. It is of two types: gaseous (reservoir: atmosphere or hydrosphere, e.g. carbon) and sedimentary (reservoir: Earth’s crust, e.g. phosphorus). Products of ecosystem processes are called ecosystem services, e.g. purification of air and water by forests. Summary do baatein jodta hai. Nutrient cycling = nutrients ka ecosystem mein store hona aur ghoomna; nutrients baar-baar use hote hain. Do types: gaseous (reservoir: atmosphere ya hydrosphere, jaise carbon) aur sedimentary (reservoir: Earth’s crust, jaise phosphorus). Ecosystem processes ke products ko ecosystem services kehte hain, jaise forests se hawa aur paani saaf hona.
