Why conserve biodiversity?जैव विविधता का संरक्षण क्यों?
NCERT Section 13.2.1 · Class 12 Biology · Chapter 13 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Narrowly utilitarian (संकीर्ण रूप से उपयोगी) — Direct economic benefits: food (cereals, pulses, fruits), firewood, fibre, construction material, industrial products (tannins, lubricants, dyes, resins, perfumes) and medicines. >25% of drugs sold worldwide come from plants; 25,000 plant species are used in traditional medicines. Bioprospecting = exploring molecular, genetic and species diversity for economically important products.
- Broadly utilitarian (व्यापक रूप से उपयोगी) — Biodiversity drives ecosystem services: the Amazon is estimated to produce 20% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere; pollination by bees, bumblebees, birds and bats; intangible joys — thick woods, spring flowers, a bulbul’s song.
- Ethical (नैतिक) — We share the planet with millions of species. Every species has intrinsic value even without economic value; we have a moral duty to care for them and pass on our biological legacy in good order to future generations.
