NCERT Section 13.2.2 · Class 12 Biology · Chapter 13 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- 34 hotspots worldwide (विश्व में 34 हॉटस्पॉट) — Regions of very high species richness and high endemism; initially 25, then 9 added. They are also regions of accelerated habitat loss. All together they cover <2% of land but hold extremely many species; strict protection could reduce ongoing mass extinctions by almost 30%.
- Himalaya (हिमालय) — One of the three hotspots covering India’s exceptionally high biodiversity regions.
- Indo-Burma (इंडो-बर्मा) — One of the three hotspots covering India (north-east India and neighbouring regions).
- Western Ghats and Sri Lanka (पश्चिमी घाट एवं श्रीलंका) — One of the three hotspots covering India; the Western Ghats also have higher amphibian species diversity than the Eastern Ghats.
