1.1Flower – A Fascinating Organ of Angiospermsपुष्प – आवृतबीजियों का एक आकर्षक अंगFlower – Angiosperms ka ek amazing organ

All flowering plants (angiosperms) reproduce sexually, and the flower is the organ where it happens. Flowers matter to people too — for beauty, festivals, worship and gifts — but for a biologist the flower is the site of sexual reproduction. Saare flowering plants (angiosperms) sexual reproduction karte hain, aur ye kaam flower mein hota hai. Humare liye flowers sundarta, tyohaar, pooja aur gift ke liye hain — par biology mein flower sexual reproduction ki jagah hai.

Long before we see a flower, the plant has already "decided" to flower: hormonal and structural changes start, the floral primordium develops, inflorescences form flower buds, and inside each flower the androecium and gynoecium differentiate. Flower dikhne se bahut pehle hi plant taiyari shuru kar deta hai — hormonal aur structural changes hote hain, floral primordium banta hai, inflorescence par buds aati hain, aur har flower mein androecium aur gynoecium bante hain.

Microsporogenesis. Each sporogenous cell can act as a pollen mother cell (PMC, 2n). A PMC divides by meiosis to make a cluster of four haploid cells — a microspore tetrad. This is microsporogenesis. As the anther matures and dries, the microspores separate and become pollen grains; each microsporangium now holds thousands of them, released when the anther dehisces. Microsporogenesis. The pollen grain is the male gametophyte NCERT Fig 1.5. It is usually spherical, about 25–50 micrometres across, with a two-layered wall. The hard outer exine is made of sporopollenin — one of the most resistant organic materials known: it survives high temperature and strong acids and alkalis, and no enzyme can degrade it. That is why pollen survives so well as fossils. The exine has prominent openings called germ pores, where sporopollenin is absent. The inner wall, intine, is thin and continuous, made of cellulose and pectin. Exine patterns are so varied that pollen of different species looks different under a microscope (NCERT Fig 1.4). Pollen grain male gametophyte hai NCERT Fig 1.5. Ye usually gol, lagbhag 25–50 micrometre ka hota hai, aur iski wall ki do layers hoti hain. Bahar ki hard layer exine sporopollenin ki bani hoti hai — itna strong material ki high temperature, strong acid aur alkali bhi isko kuch nahi kar paate, aur koi enzyme isko tod nahi sakta. Isiliye pollen fossils mein bhi bache rehte hain. Jahan sporopollenin nahi hota, wahan holes hote hain — germ pores. Andar ki patli layer intine cellulose aur pectin ki hoti hai. Alag plants ke pollen microscope mein alag design ke dikhte hain (NCERT Fig 1.4).

A mature pollen grain has two cells: the big vegetative cell (plenty of food, large irregular nucleus) and the small, spindle-shaped generative cell that floats in the vegetative cell's cytoplasm. In over 60% of angiosperms pollen is shed at this 2-celled stage. In the rest, the generative cell first divides into the two male gametes, and pollen is shed 3-celled. Mature pollen mein do cells hoti hain: badi vegetative cell (bahut saara food, bada irregular nucleus) aur chhoti spindle-shape wali generative cell jo vegetative cell ke cytoplasm mein tairti rehti hai. 60% se zyada angiosperms mein pollen isi 2-celled stage mein release hota hai. Baaki mein generative cell pehle hi divide hokar do male gametes bana leti hai, aur pollen 3-celled release hota hai.

Pollen and peoplePollen of many plants (e.g. Parthenium or carrot grass, which came to India with imported wheat) causes allergies and breathing problems such as asthma and bronchitis. Pollen is also rich in nutrients — pollen tablets/syrups are used as food supplements and by athletes and race horses NCERT Fig 1.6. Pollen aur humKai plants ke pollen (jaise Parthenium ya carrot grass, jo imported wheat ke saath India aayi) allergy aur saans ki problems — jaise asthma aur bronchitis — karte hain. Pollen viabilityViability depends on temperature and humidity. In rice and wheat pollen dies within about 30 minutes of release; in some members of Rosaceae, Leguminosae and Solanaceae it stays viable for months. Pollen can be stored for years in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C (cryopreservation) in pollen banks, like seed banks, for crop-breeding programmes. Pollen viabilityViability temperature aur humidity par depend karti hai. Plants use outside agents for this. Iske liye plants bahar ke agents (hawa, paani, animals) ki help lete hain.

Kinds of pollination NCERT Fig 1.9, based on where the pollen comes from:परागण के प्रकार NCERT Fig 1.9 — पराग कहाँ से आया, इस आधार पर:Pollination ke types NCERT Fig 1.9 — pollen kahan se aaya, us basis par:

  1. Autogamy — pollen to the stigma of the same flower. In a flower that opens, this needs anthers and stigma close together and pollen release in sync with stigma receptivity, so complete autogamy is rare. Some plants (Viola, Oxalis, Commelina) have two kinds of flowers: chasmogamous flowers that open, and cleistogamous flowers that never open. Cleistogamous flowers are always autogamous and give assured seed-set even without pollinators. Autogamy — pollen usi flower ke stigma par. Khule flower mein iske liye anther aur stigma paas-paas hone chahiye aur pollen tabhi nikle jab stigma ready ho — isliye complete autogamy rare hai. Kuch plants (Viola, Oxalis, Commelina) mein do tarah ke flowers hote hain: chasmogamous — jo khulte hain, aur cleistogamous — jo kabhi nahi khulte. Cleistogamous flowers hamesha autogamous hote hain, isliye pollinator na ho tab bhi seed pakka banta hai.
  2. Geitonogamy — pollen to another flower of the same plant. It needs a pollinating agent, so it works like cross-pollination, but genetically it is like autogamy because the pollen comes from the same plant. Geitonogamy — pollen usi plant ke doosre flower par. Isme pollinating agent chahiye, isliye kaam mein ye cross-pollination jaisa hai, par genetically autogamy jaisa hai kyunki pollen usi plant ka hai.
  3. Xenogamy — pollen to the stigma of a different plant. The only type that brings genetically different pollen to the stigma. Xenogamy — pollen doosre plant ke stigma par. Yahi ek type hai jisme genetically different pollen pahunchta hai.

Agents of pollination. Abiotic: wind and water. Biotic: animals. Most plants use animals; only a few use wind or water. Because reaching a stigma by wind or water is a matter of chance, such flowers make huge amounts of pollen compared with the number of ovules. Pollination ke agents. Abiotic: hawa aur paani. Biotic: animals. Hawa-paani se pollen ka stigma tak pahunchna chance ki baat hai, isliye aise flowers ovules ke comparison mein bahut zyada pollen banate hain.

Wind pollination (most common abiotic type) — pollen is light and non-sticky; stamens are well exposed; the stigma is large and often feathery to trap airborne pollen; there is often a single ovule per ovary and many flowers packed in an inflorescence NCERT Fig 1.10. Example: the "silk" of a corn cob is the stigma and style waving in the wind. Common in grasses. Wind pollination (sabse common abiotic) — pollen halke aur non-sticky; stamens bahar nikle hue; stigma bada aur aksar feathery taaki hawa mein udte pollen pakad sake; aksar har ovary mein ek ovule aur inflorescence mein bahut saare flowers NCERT Fig 1.10. Example: makke ke bhutte ke "baal" asal mein hawa mein hilte stigma aur style hain. Grasses mein common.

Water pollination is rare — about 30 genera, mostly monocots: Vallisneria and Hydrilla (fresh water), sea-grasses like Zostera. In Vallisneria the female flower reaches the water surface on a long stalk and male flowers/pollen float on the surface and drift to it NCERT Fig 1.11a. In sea-grasses, female flowers stay submerged and the long, ribbon-like pollen is carried inside the water. Pollen is protected from wetting by a mucilaginous covering. Most aquatic plants (water hyacinth, water lily) are actually pollinated by insects or wind. Wind- and water-pollinated flowers are not colourful and make no nectar. Water pollination rare hai — lagbhag 30 genera, zyadatar monocots: Vallisneria aur Hydrilla (meetha paani), sea-grasses jaise Zostera. Vallisneria mein female flower lambe stalk se paani ki surface tak aata hai, aur male flowers/pollen surface par tairte hue usse milte hain NCERT Fig 1.11a. Sea-grasses mein female flowers paani ke andar rehte hain aur lambe ribbon jaise pollen paani ke andar beh kar pahunchte hain. Pollen par mucilage ki coating hoti hai jo usko geela hone se bachati hai. Zyadatar aquatic plants (water hyacinth, water lily) actually insects ya hawa se pollinate hote hain. Hawa aur paani wale flowers colourful nahi hote aur nectar nahi banate.

Animal pollination — bees, butterflies, flies, beetles, wasps, ants, moths, birds (sunbirds, humming birds) and bats; bees dominate NCERT Fig 1.11b. Even lemurs, tree rodents and lizards pollinate some species. Insect-pollinated flowers are usually large, colourful, fragrant and nectar-rich; small flowers are grouped into an inflorescence to be noticed. Fly- and beetle-pollinated flowers give out foul smells. Flowers offer floral rewards — nectar and pollen. Pollen in such flowers is generally sticky. Some flowers give a safe place to lay eggs: Amorphophallus (the flower itself is about 6 feet tall), and the Yucca plant and its moth, which cannot complete their life cycles without each other. Visitors that take pollen or nectar without pollinating are pollen/nectar robbers. Animal pollination — bees, butterflies, flies, beetles, wasps, ants, moths, birds (sunbirds, humming birds) aur bats; inme bees sabse aage NCERT Fig 1.11b. Lemurs, tree rodents aur lizards bhi kuch plants ka pollination karte hain. Insect-pollinated flowers usually bade, colourful, khushboodaar aur nectar wale hote hain; chhote flowers inflorescence mein group banakar dikhte hain. Fly aur beetle wale flowers badboo dete hain. Flowers floral rewards dete hain — nectar aur pollen; inke pollen sticky hote hain. Kuch flowers ande dene ki safe jagah dete hain: Amorphophallus (flower khud lagbhag 6 feet ka) aur Yucca plant aur uska moth — jo ek-doosre ke bina life cycle complete nahi kar sakte. Jo bina pollination kiye pollen ya nectar le jaate hain, wo pollen/nectar robbers hain.

Outbreeding devices. Continued self-pollination causes inbreeding depression, so plants have ways to avoid it: (1) pollen release and stigma receptivity are not synchronised; (2) anther and stigma are at different positions; (3) self-incompatibility, which blocks pollen germination or tube growth of self-pollen; (4) unisexual flowers — monoecious plants (castor, maize) prevent autogamy but not geitonogamy; dioecious plants (papaya) prevent both. Outbreeding devices. Lagataar self-pollination se inbreeding depression hota hai, isliye plants isse bachne ke tareeke apnaate hain: (1) pollen nikalne aur stigma ready hone ka time alag; (2) anther aur stigma alag position par; (3) self-incompatibility — apne hi pollen ka germination ya tube growth ruk jaata hai; (4) unisexual flowers — monoecious plants (castor, maize) autogamy rokte hain par geitonogamy nahi; dioecious plants (papaya) dono rokte hain.

Pollen–pistil interaction: path of the pollen tubeपराग-स्त्रीकेसर संकर्षण: पराग नलिका का मार्गPollen–pistil interaction: path of the pollen tubeNCERT Fig 1.12 · 8 tappable parts · 5 stepsOpen

Pollen–pistil interaction. Pollination does not guarantee the right pollen; wrong pollen (another species, or self-pollen in a self-incompatible plant) also lands. The pistil recognises pollen through a chemical "dialogue" between pollen and pistil components: compatible pollen is accepted, incompatible pollen is rejected (its germination or tube growth is stopped). Compatible pollen germinates and puts out a pollen tube through a germ pore; the tube grows through the stigma and style to the ovary NCERT Fig 1.12. If pollen was shed 2-celled, the generative cell divides into two male gametes on the way; 3-celled pollen carries both gametes from the start. The tube enters the ovule through the micropyle and then enters one synergid through the filiform apparatus, which guides it. All events from pollen landing on the stigma until the tube enters the ovule = pollen–pistil interaction. Breeders use this knowledge to get desired hybrids even in incompatible crosses. Pollen–pistil interaction. Pollination hone ka matlab ye nahi ki sahi pollen hi aayega; galat pollen (doosri species ka, ya self-incompatible plant mein apna hi pollen) bhi stigma par girta hai. Pistil ek chemical "baatcheet" se pollen ko pehchaanta hai: compatible pollen accept, incompatible pollen reject — uska germination ya tube growth rok diya jaata hai. Compatible pollen germinate hokar ek germ pore se pollen tube nikaalta hai; tube stigma aur style se hote hue ovary tak badhti hai NCERT Fig 1.12. Agar pollen 2-celled stage mein nikla tha, toh raaste mein generative cell divide hokar 2 male gametes banati hai; 3-celled pollen mein dono gametes pehle se hote hain. Tube micropyle se ovule mein, phir filiform apparatus ke through ek synergid mein ghusti hai — filiform apparatus hi tube ko guide karta hai. Stigma par pollen girne se lekar tube ke ovule mein ghusne tak sab events = pollen–pistil interaction. Is knowledge se breeders incompatible cross mein bhi desired hybrid bana lete hain.

Artificial hybridisation — crossing chosen parents to combine good characters (crop improvement). Only the desired pollen must reach the stigma, so: if the female parent has bisexual flowers, remove the anthers from the bud before they dehisce with forceps — emasculation; then cover the flower with a butter-paper bag — bagging. When the stigma becomes receptive, dust pollen from the male parent and rebag. If the female parent has unisexual flowers, no emasculation is needed — just bag the female buds, pollinate and rebag. Artificial hybridisation — achhe characters ek saath laane ke liye chune hue parents ka cross (crop improvement). The pollen tube releases its two male gametes into a synergid. One male gamete fuses with the egg nucleus — syngamy — giving a diploid zygote. The other fuses with the two polar nuclei in the central cell, giving a triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN); because three haploid nuclei fuse, this is triple fusion. Two fusions in one embryo sac = double fertilisation, an event unique to flowering plants NCERT Fig 1.13a. The central cell becomes the primary endosperm cell (PEC) and forms the endosperm; the zygote forms the embryo. Pollen tube apne dono male gametes ek synergid mein chhodti hai. 1.4.1Endospermभ्रूणपोषEndosperm

Endosperm develops before the embryo (the embryo needs its food). The primary endosperm cell divides again and again to form triploid endosperm tissue full of reserve food. In the commonest type, the PEN first divides many times without walls — free-nuclear endosperm; later walls form and it becomes cellular. Example: tender-coconut water is free-nuclear endosperm (thousands of nuclei) and the white kernel around it is cellular endosperm. The endosperm may be used up completely before the seed matures (pea, groundnut, beans) or persist in the seed (castor, coconut) and be used during germination. Endosperm embryo se pehle banta hai (kyunki embryo ko khana chahiye). Primary endosperm cell baar-baar divide hokar triploid endosperm tissue banati hai, jisme reserve food bhara hota hai. Sabse common type mein PEN pehle kai baar bina cell wall ke divide hota hai — free-nuclear endosperm; baad mein walls banti hain aur ye cellular ho jaata hai. Example: kachche nariyal ka paani = free-nuclear endosperm (hazaaron nuclei), aur uske chaaron taraf ki safed giri = cellular endosperm. Endosperm ya toh seed pakne se pehle poora use ho jaata hai (pea, groundnut, beans), ya seed mein bacha rehta hai (castor, coconut) aur germination mein kaam aata hai.

In some seeds (black pepper, beet) remnants of the nucellus persist as perisperm. Seed sexual reproduction ka final product hai — ise aksar fertilised ovule kehte hain; ye fruit ke andar banta hai. Isme seed coat, cotyledon(s) aur ek embryonal axis hote hain NCERT Fig 1.15a. Cotyledons aksar stored food se mote hote hain (legumes). Seeds ya toh non-albuminous hote hain — endosperm bacha nahi (pea, groundnut; bean seed dekho) — ya albuminous — endosperm ka kuch part bacha rehta hai (wheat, maize, barley, castor; endosperm aur aleurone layer wala maize grain dekho). Kuch seeds (black pepper, beet) mein nucellus ke remains bache rehte hain — perisperm.

Integuments harden into the protective seed coat; the micropyle remains as a small pore that lets oxygen and water in at germination. As the seed matures it dries (10–15% moisture by mass), metabolism slows and the embryo may enter dormancy; with enough moisture, oxygen and suitable temperature it germinates. Integuments hard hokar protective seed coat ban jaate hain; micropyle ek chhote pore ke roop mein bacha rehta hai, jisse germination ke time oxygen aur paani andar jaate hain. Pakte time seed sookh jaata hai (weight ka 10–15% moisture), metabolism slow ho jaata hai aur embryo dormancy mein ja sakta hai; kaafi moisture, oxygen aur sahi temperature milne par seed germinate hota hai.

Fruit. While ovules become seeds, the ovary becomes the fruit at the same time; the ovary wall becomes the fruit wall, the pericarp. Fruits may be fleshy (guava, orange, mango) or dry (groundnut, mustard). In most plants only the ovary forms the fruit — true fruits. In apple, strawberry and cashew the thalamus also contributes — false fruits NCERT Fig 1.15b. Some fruits form without fertilisation — parthenocarpic fruits, e.g. banana; parthenocarpy can be induced with growth hormones, and such fruits are seedless. Fruit. Why seeds are great for angiosperms: pollination and fertilisation don't need water, so seed formation is dependable; seeds disperse to new places; stored food feeds the seedling until it can photosynthesise; the hard seed coat protects the embryo; and being products of sexual reproduction they bring new genetic combinations (variation). Dried, dormant seeds can be stored — the basis of agriculture. Seeds angiosperms ke liye kyun great hain: pollination aur fertilisation mein paani nahi chahiye, isliye seed banna reliable hai; seeds nayi jagah tak failte hain; stored food seedling ko tab tak khilaata hai jab tak wo khud photosynthesis na karne lage; hard seed coat embryo ko bachaata hai; aur sexual reproduction se bane hone ki wajah se seeds naye genetic combinations (variation) laate hain.

Seed viability recordsSome seeds lose viability in months, many live for years. The oldest record: a lupine, Lupinus arcticus, from the Arctic Tundra germinated after about 10,000 years. A ~2000-year-old viable seed of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) was found at King Herod's palace near the Dead Sea. Orchids, Orobanche and Striga produce thousands of tiny seeds per fruit. Seed viability ke recordsKuch seeds kuch mahino mein viability kho dete hain, kai saalon tak zinda rehte hain. Sabse purana record: Arctic Tundra ka lupine (Lupinus arcticus) lagbhag 10,000 saal baad germinate hua. Apomixis aur Polyembryony

Some flowering plants (some Asteraceae and grasses) make seeds without fertilisation — apomixis. It is a form of asexual reproduction that mimics sexual reproduction. Ways it happens: (1) a diploid egg forms without reduction division and develops into an embryo without fertilisation; (2) more often (many Citrus and mango varieties), some nucellar cells around the embryo sac divide, push into the embryo sac and develop into embryos. Then each ovule has many embryos — polyembryony. Squeeze an orange seed and you can see several embryos of different sizes! Ye asexual reproduction ka ek form hai jo sexual reproduction jaisa dikhta hai. Ye aise hota hai: (1) bina reduction division (meiosis) ke diploid egg banta hai aur bina fertilisation embryo ban jaata hai; (2) zyaadatar (Citrus aur mango ki kai varieties mein) embryo sac ke aas-paas ki kuch nucellar cells divide hokar embryo sac mein ghus jaati hain aur embryos ban jaati hain. Tab ek ovule mein kai embryos hote hain — polyembryony. Orange ka seed dabaakar dekho — alag-alag size ke kai embryos dikh sakte hain!

Apomictic embryos are genetically identical to the parent — clones. Why it matters: hybrid seeds must be bought every year because hybrid progeny segregate. If hybrids were made apomictic, farmers could keep sowing their own hybrid seed year after year. That is why scientists study the genetics of apomixis and try to transfer apomictic genes into hybrid varieties. Apomixis se bane embryos genetically parent jaise hi hote hain — clones. Ye kyun important hai: farmers ko hybrid seeds har saal khareedne padte hain, kyunki hybrid ki progeny mein characters segregate ho jaate hain. Agar hybrids ko apomictic bana diya jaaye, toh farmers saal-dar-saal apna hi hybrid seed bo sakenge. Isliye scientists apomixis ki genetics study kar rahe hain aur apomictic genes ko hybrid varieties mein daalne ki koshish kar rahe hain.
