Artificial hybridisation: emasculation & baggingकृत्रिम संकरण: विपुंसन व बोरावस्त्रावरण
Class 12 Biology · Chapter 1 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Anthers (परागकोश) — In a bisexual female-parent flower they must be removed BEFORE they dehisce — or self-pollen would contaminate the cross.
- Emasculation (विपुंसन) — Removal of anthers from the flower bud (before dehiscence) using forceps. Not needed if the female parent has unisexual flowers.
- Bagging (बोरावस्त्रावरण) — Covering the emasculated flower with a bag (generally butter paper) to protect the stigma from unwanted pollen.
- Pollination with desired pollen (वांछित पराग से परागण) — When the stigma becomes receptive, mature pollen from the male parent is dusted on it; then the flower is REBAGGED and the fruit allowed to develop.
Steps
- Choose a flower bud of the female parent (bisexual flower).
- Emasculation: remove the anthers with forceps before they dehisce.
- Bagging: cover with a butter-paper bag.
- When the stigma is receptive, dust pollen from the chosen male parent.
- Rebag and let the fruit develop. (Unisexual female flowers: only bag the buds — no emasculation.)
