Parts and their functions
- Stigma (वर्तिकाग्र) — Tip of the pistil — the landing platform for pollen grains. Compatible pollen germinates here.
- Style (वर्तिका) — Slender stalk below the stigma. The pollen tube grows down through it to reach the ovary.
- Ovary (अंडाशय) — Swollen basal part of the pistil. Its cavity (ovarian cavity) holds the ovules on the placenta. After fertilisation the ovary becomes the fruit; its wall becomes the pericarp.
- Ovule (megasporangium) (बीजांड) — Develops the embryo sac (female gametophyte) inside it. After fertilisation, ovule → seed.
- Anther (परागकोश) — Terminal, usually bilobed part of the stamen. Its four microsporangia (pollen sacs) produce pollen grains.
- Filament (पुतंतु) — Long, slender stalk of the stamen that holds up the anther. Its lower (proximal) end is attached to the thalamus or the petal.
- Petal (दल (पंखुड़ी)) — Unit of the corolla; usually coloured and often scented — attracts animals (insects, birds) for pollination.
- Sepal (बाह्यदल) — Unit of the calyx; usually green — protects the flower in the bud stage.
- Thalamus (receptacle) (पुष्पासन) — Swollen tip of the flower stalk on which all floral whorls are borne. In apple, strawberry and cashew it also forms part of the fruit (false fruit).
- Pedicel (पुष्पवृंत) — Stalk of the flower; attaches it to the plant.
