Parts and their functions
- Funicle (बीजांडवृंत) — Stalk by which the ovule is attached to the placenta. In an anatropous (inverted) ovule it runs along one side of the ovule body (raphe).
- Hilum (नाभिका) — The region where the body of the ovule fuses with the funicle. (In the seed it remains as a scar.)
- Outer integument (बाह्य अध्यावरण) — Protective envelope around the ovule. Integuments encircle the nucellus except at the micropyle. Become the seed coat after fertilisation.
- Inner integument (आंतरिक अध्यावरण) — Second protective envelope, inside the outer integument.
- Nucellus (बीजांडकाय) — Mass of cells enclosed by the integuments; cells have abundant reserve food. The embryo sac lies inside it.
- Embryo sac (female gametophyte) (भ्रूणकोश (मादा युग्मकोद्भिद)) — Located in the nucellus. An ovule generally has a single embryo sac, formed from one megaspore.
- Micropyle (बीजांडद्वार) — Small opening at the tip of the integuments. The pollen tube usually enters the ovule through it. Remains as a small pore in the seed coat.
- Chalaza (निभाग) — Basal part of the ovule, opposite the micropylar end, where integuments, nucellus and funicle merge.
