Chapter 4 described motion (position, velocity, acceleration). This chapter asks what causes a change in motion — why a canoe moves forward when the paddle pushes water backward. The answer is force, and Newton’s three laws tell us exactly how forces change motion. Chapter 4 mein motion ka varnan (position, velocity, acceleration) tha. Ye chapter poochhta hai ki motion mein badlaav ka kaaran kya hai — chappu se paani peechhe dhakelne par naav aage kyun jaati hai. Jawab hai force, aur Newton ke teen laws batate hain ki force motion ko kaise badalta hai.
Force ki concept
A force is a push or a pull that arises from an interaction between two objects. A force can set a stationary object moving, stop a moving one, change its speed or direction, and change its shape. Force has both magnitude (strength) and direction; changing either changes its effect. The SI unit of force is the newton (N) (small “n”). Force ek push ya pull hai jo do objects ke interaction se banta hai. Force ruki cheez ko chala sakta hai, chalti ko rok sakta hai, uski speed ya direction badal sakta hai, aur shape badal sakta hai. Force mein magnitude (strength) aur direction dono hote hain; kisi ke bhi badalne se effect badalta hai. Force ki SI unit newton (N) hai.
Measuring force (6.1.1): a spring balance measures force — the spring stretches more for a larger pull. The weight of an object is the gravitational force with which the Earth pulls it, so a spring balance reading of weight is a force in newtons. Force naapna (6.1.1): spring balance force naapta hai — zyada pull par spring zyada khinchti hai. Kisi cheez ka weight wo gravitational force hai jisse Earth use kheenchti hai, isliye spring balance par weight ki reading newton mein ek force hai.
Balanced aur unbalanced forces
Several forces may act on one object, but its motion depends only on the net force (resultant). Along a line: forces in the same direction add; in opposite directions subtract, and the net force points along the larger one (Fig 6.6). If the net force is zero, the forces are balanced — no change in the state of rest or motion. A non-zero net force (unbalanced forces) changes the velocity. Ek object par kai forces lag sakte hain, par uski motion sirf net force par tiki hai. Ek line mein: same direction ke forces judte hain; opposite direction ke ghat-te hain, aur net force bade force ki direction mein hota hai (Fig 6.6). Net force zero ho to forces balanced hain — rest ya motion ki state nahi badalti. Non-zero net force (unbalanced forces) velocity badalta hai.

Push a heavy box lightly and it does not move: the force of friction between the box and the floor acts opposite to your push and balances it. The box moves only when your push is larger than the friction, so a net force acts forward. Other forces also act — weight downward and the normal force of the floor upward; these two balance (Fig 6.11). Air friction is usually small enough to neglect. Bhaari box ko halka dhakeliye to wo nahi hilta: box aur floor ke beech friction force aapke push ke opposite lag kar use balance kar deta hai. Box tabhi chalta hai jab push friction se bada ho, taaki aage net force lage. Aur forces bhi lagte hain — neeche weight aur floor ka upar normal force; ye dono balance rehte hain (Fig 6.11). Hawa ka friction aam taur par negligible hota hai.

Once you stop pushing, a box, a ball or a bicycle slows and stops. Is a force needed to keep something moving? Activity 6.1: roll the same ball on carpet, on tiles, on glass — the smoother the surface, the farther it goes. Imagine zero friction (a thought experiment): the ball would never stop (diagram). What stops moving things is friction, not the lack of a push. Push band karne par box, ball ya cycle dheemi hokar ruk jaati hai. Kya kisi cheez ko chalte rehne ke liye force chahiye? Activity 6.1: wahi ball carpet, tiles, kaanch par ludhkaaiye — surface jitni smooth, ball utni door. Zero friction imagine kijiye (thought experiment): ball kabhi nahi rukegi (diagram). Chalti cheezon ko friction rokta hai, push ki kami nahi.

A gentle push gives a ball a small acceleration, a strong push a large one; the same push moves a light object more easily than a heavy one. Activity 6.3 (same trolley, pulling force doubled → acceleration doubles) and Activity 6.4 (same force, mass doubled → acceleration halves) test these hypotheses (graphs). Halke push se ball ko kam acceleration, tez push se zyada acceleration milta hai; wahi push halki cheez ko bhaari se aasani se chalata hai. Examples: a canoe paddle pushes water back, water pushes the canoe forward; when we walk our foot pushes the ground back and the ground pushes us forward; a rocket pushes gases out backward and the gases push the rocket forward; a fire hose recoils. Example 6.7: the Earth and a fruit pull each other with equal forces, but the Earth’s mass is enormous so its acceleration is negligible — only the fruit visibly moves. Example 6.8: a 2 N force on a 0.1 kg bullet gives a = 2/0.1 = 20 m s⁻²; the equal 2 N recoil on the 5 kg gun gives only 0.4 m s⁻² backward. Examples: naav ka chappu paani ko peechhe dhakelta hai, paani naav ko aage; chalte waqt pair zameen ko peechhe dhakelta hai aur zameen humein aage; rocket gases ko peechhe nikaalta hai aur gases rocket ko aage dhakelti hain; fire pipe peechhe jhatka deta hai. Example 6.7: Earth aur phal ek-doosre ko barabar force se kheenchte hain, par Earth ka mass bahut bada hai, isliye uska acceleration negligible — sirf phal chalta dikhta hai. Example 6.8: 0.1 kg bullet par 2 N force se a = 2/0.1 = 20 m s⁻²; 5 kg gun par barabar 2 N recoil se sirf 0.4 m s⁻² peechhe.

Two boxes m₁ and m₂ on a frictionless floor are joined by a string; force F pulls box 1. The string pulls the boxes with tension T (an action–reaction pair). Treat both boxes and the string as one system: tension is an internal force and cancels; only external forces matter. So the system accelerates like a single object of mass m₁ + m₂: a = F ÷ (m₁ + m₂) (Eq. 6.4) (Fig 6.34). Vertically, weight (m₁ + m₂)g is balanced by the normal force N₁ + N₂. Newton’s laws work from everyday objects to planets; they need changes only near the speed of light, at atomic scales and very near massive objects. Frictionless floor par do boxes m₁ aur m₂ dori se jude hain; force F box 1 ko kheenchta hai. Dori boxes ko tension T se kheenchti hai (action–reaction pair). Dono boxes aur dori ko ek system maaniye: tension internal force hai aur cancel ho jaata hai; sirf external forces matter karte hain. Isliye system m₁ + m₂ mass ke ek object jaisa accelerate hota hai: a = F ÷ (m₁ + m₂) (Eq. 6.4) (Fig 6.34). Vertically weight (m₁ + m₂)g normal force N₁ + N₂ se balance. Newton ke laws roz ki cheezon se planets tak laagu hain; light ki speed ke paas, atomic level par aur bahut bhaari objects ke bahut paas hi inmein badlaav chahiye.
