In everyday language “work” means any effort, but in science work is done only when a force moves an object. An object that can do work has energy. This chapter links force, motion and energy, and shows how simple machines make work easier. Roz ki bhasha mein “work” matlab koi bhi mehnat, par science mein work tabhi hota hai jab force kisi object ko displace kare. Jo object work kar sake usmein energy hoti hai. Ye chapter force, motion aur energy ko jodta hai aur batata hai ki simple machines work ko aasaan kaise banati hain.

7.1Work done by a constant forceस्थिर बल द्वारा किया गया कार्यConstant force dwara kiya gaya work

W = F × s
work = force × displacement in the direction of the force (7.1, 7.2)कार्य = बल × बल की दिशा में विस्थापन (7.1, 7.2)work = force × force ki direction mein displacement (7.1, 7.2)
1 J = 1 N × 1 m
SI unit of work (and energy) is the joule: 1 N force moving an object 1 m along the forceकार्य (और ऊर्जा) का SI मात्रक जूल: 1 N बल वस्तु को बल की दिशा में 1 m विस्थापित करेwork (aur energy) ki SI unit joule: 1 N force object ko force ki direction mein 1 m displace kare

Work is a scalar (no direction) but can be positive, negative or zero (diagram). Zero work (7.1.1): no force, no displacement (holding a barbell steady, pushing a fixed wall), or force perpendicular to the displacement. Positive/negative (7.1.2): force along the displacement → positive (lifting a bucket); force opposite → negative (friction, a goalkeeper stopping a ball). Example 7.1: lifting a dumbbell — positive work; lowering it slowly — the girl still pushes up while it moves down, so negative work. Work ek scalar hai (direction nahi) par positive, negative ya zero ho sakta hai (diagram). Zero work (7.1.1): force nahi, displacement nahi (barbell steady pakadna, fixed deewar dhakelna), ya force displacement ke perpendicular. Positive/negative (7.1.2): force displacement ki direction mein → positive (balti uthaana); opposite → negative (friction, ball rokti goalkeeper). Example 7.1: dumbbell uthaana — positive work; dheere neeche laana — ladki ab bhi upar force lagaati hai par dumbbell neeche jaata hai, isliye negative work. Example 7.2: goalkeeper, 200 N, haath 15 cm peechhe: W = 200 × (−0.15) = −30 J.

Work-energy theorem

Energy is the capacity to do work; its SI unit is also the joule. A thrown ball can knock down a wicket — work done on it gave it energy. Work-energy theorem: work done on an object = change in its energy (7.3). Positive work increases the energy, negative work decreases it. Example 7.3 (carrom): the finger does work on the striker (gains KE); the striker does work on the coin (striker loses, coin gains KE); friction does negative work and the coin finally stops — the energy becomes heat and sound. Energy work karne ki capacity hai; iski SI unit bhi joule hai. Phenki gayi ball wicket gira sakti hai — us par kiye gaye work ne use energy di. Work-energy theorem: object par kiya gaya work = uski energy mein badlaav (7.3). Positive work energy badhata hai, negative ghatata hai. Example 7.3 (carrom): ungli striker par work karti hai (KE milti hai); striker coin par work karta hai (striker ki ghat-ti, coin ki badhti); friction negative work karta hai aur coin ruk jaata hai — energy heat aur sound ban jaati hai.

Energy ke roop

Energy exists as mechanical (motion/position), thermal, chemical (food, fuels, cells), electrical, light, sound, nuclear and more, and can change from one form to another: electrical → light + heat in a bulb, chemical → mechanical in our muscles, light → chemical in photosynthesis, light → electrical in a solar panel. Energy mechanical (motion/position), thermal, chemical (khaana, fuel, cells), electrical, light, sound, nuclear wagairah roopon mein hoti hai aur ek roop se doosre mein badal sakti hai: bulb mein electrical → light + heat, muscles mein chemical → mechanical, photosynthesis mein light → chemical, solar panel mein light → electrical.

Mechanical energy: kinetic aur potential

Kinetic energy (7.4.1) is energy due to motion. Using W = F s, F = ma and v² = u² + 2as, the work done is W = ½m(v² − u²) (7.5); starting from rest, K = ½ m v² (7.6). Example 7.4: double the velocity → KE becomes 4 times. Example 7.5: 0.2 kg ball at 154.8 km/h = 43 m/s → K = ½ × 0.2 × 43² = 184.9 J. Example 7.6: 15000 kg jet stopped by a 367500 N wire in 100 m: work = −367500 × 100 = −3.675 × 10⁷ J = −½ × 15000 × v² → v² = 4900 → v = 70 m/s. Example 7.4: velocity double → KE 4 guna. Example 7.5: 154.8 km/h = 43 m/s par 0.2 kg ball → K = ½ × 0.2 × 43² = 184.9 J. Example 7.6: 15000 kg jet ko 367500 N ka wire 100 m mein rokta hai: work = −367500 × 100 = −3.675 × 10⁷ J = −½ × 15000 × v² → v² = 4900 → v = 70 m/s.

Potential energy (7.4.2) is energy stored due to position or shape — a stretched slingshot (elastic PE), a raised object (gravitational PE). Lifting mass m slowly through height h needs force mg, so the work done mgh is stored: U = m g h (7.8), valid near the Earth’s surface (Activity 7.1: a ball dropped from greater height makes a deeper dent in sand). Potential energy (7.4.2) position ya shape ki wajah se stored energy hai — khinchi gulel (elastic PE), upar uthi cheez (gravitational PE). m mass ko h height tak dheere uthaane mein mg force lagta hai, isliye kiya gaya work mgh store hota hai: U = m g h (7.8), Earth ki surface ke paas valid (Activity 7.1: zyada height se giri ball ret mein gehra gaddha banati hai). Example 7.7: 200 g ball 10 m upar: U = 0.2 × 10 × 10 = 20 J.

Conservation of mechanical energy (7.4.3): mechanical energy = KE + PE. When only gravity does work (no friction or air resistance), the total mechanical energy stays constant — PE lost = KE gained. A body falling from h has mgh at every point and hits the ground with v = √(2gh) (Example 7.8, a child on a slide). Energy is never created or destroyed, only changed in form. Mechanical energy ka conservation (7.4.3): mechanical energy = KE + PE. Jab sirf gravity work kare (friction ya air resistance nahi), total mechanical energy constant rehti hai — ghati PE = badhi KE. h se girti cheez ke paas har point par mgh rehta hai aur wo v = √(2gh) se zameen par pahunchti hai (Example 7.8, slide par bachcha). Energy na banti hai na nasht hoti hai, sirf roop badalti hai.

Activity 7.2 (pendulum): the bob rises to almost the same height on both sides — PE at the extremes, KE at the lowest point (diagram); try it on the simple pendulum lab. Example 7.9 (escape ramp): 10000 kg truck at 72 km/h = 20 m/s has KE = 2,000,000 J. On a 30° ramp it rises d/2 for distance d, and sand opposes with 50000 N: 2,000,000 = mg(d/2) + 50000 d = 50000 d + 50000 d → d = 20 m. Activity 7.2 (pendulum): bob dono taraf lagbhag same height tak jaata hai — extremes par PE, sabse neeche KE (diagram); simple pendulum lab par try kijiye. Example 7.9 (escape ramp): 72 km/h = 20 m/s par 10000 kg truck ki KE = 2,000,000 J. 30° ramp par d distance mein wo d/2 upar uthta hai aur ret 50000 N se rokti hai: 2,000,000 = mg(d/2) + 50000 d = 50000 d + 50000 d → d = 20 m.

7.6Simple machinesसरल मशीनेंSimple machines

A simple machine lets us apply a smaller force or apply it in a more convenient direction; it does not reduce the work (and never gives out more work than is put in). Mechanical advantage MA = load ÷ effort (7.12). Pulley (7.6.1): a single fixed pulley has MA = 1 — it only changes the direction of the force (diagram); movable pulleys/systems give MA > 1. Simple machine humein kam force lagaane ya zyada convenient direction mein force lagaane deti hai; ye work kam nahi karti (aur diye gaye work se zyada work kabhi nahi deti). Mechanical advantage MA = load ÷ effort (7.12). Pulley (7.6.1): single fixed pulley ka MA = 1 — ye sirf force ki direction badalti hai (diagram); movable pulley/systems se MA > 1.

Inclined plane (7.6.2): pushing a load of weight mg up a ramp of length L to height h (no friction): F′ × L = mg × h, so MA = L ÷ h (7.13). Activity 7.3 measures this with a spring balance. Example 7.12: step 30 cm high, ramp base 40 cm → length 50 cm → MA = 50/30 ≈ 1.67 (diagram). Inclined plane (7.6.2): mg weight ko L lambe ramp par h height tak dhakelna (friction nahi): F′ × L = mg × h, isliye MA = L ÷ h (7.13). Activity 7.4 (scale on a pencil with erasers) shows it balances when effort × effort arm = load × load arm (7.15), so MA = effort arm ÷ load arm (7.16). Levers are of three classes by what lies in the middle (Table 7.2). Example 7.13: seesaw with seats 2 m (A, E) and 1 m (B, D) from the fulcrum: 15 kg child at A (15 × 2 = 30), so the 30 kg child sits at D (30 × 1 = 30) (diagram). उदाहरण 7.13: सी-सॉ, आलंब से सीटें 2 m (A, E) और 1 m (B, D): 15 kg बच्चा A पर (15 × 2 = 30), तो 30 kg बच्चा D पर (30 × 1 = 30) (डायग्राम)।Lever (7.6.3): ek fulcrum ke chaaron taraf ghoomne wali rigid bar. Activity 7.4 (pencil par scale aur erasers) dikhaati hai ki balance tab hota hai jab effort × effort arm = load × load arm (7.15), isliye MA = effort arm ÷ load arm (7.16). Beech mein kya hai, uske hisaab se levers teen classes ke hote hain (Table 7.2). No. She applies an upward force but the barbell has no displacement, so W = F × 0 = 0 (her muscles still use energy internally). Nahi. Wo upar force lagaati hai par barbell ka displacement zero hai, isliye W = F × 0 = 0 (muscles andar hi energy kharch karti hain).
Pause and Ponder 2. Is the work done by friction on the stack of coins sliding on a rough surface (Fig. 6.13c) positive, negative or zero? Rough surface par phisalti coins ki gaddi (Fig. 6.13c) par friction ka work positive, negative ya zero?
Negative — friction acts opposite to the displacement, so it takes energy away and the coins slow down and stop. Negative — friction displacement ke opposite hai, isliye energy ghataata hai aur coins dheeme hokar rukte hain.
Pause and Ponder 3. Pedalling a bicycle on a flat road, in what forms does your muscular energy appear? Samtal sadak par cycle chalate waqt aapki muscles ki energy kin roopon mein dikhti hai?
Chemical energy of food → kinetic energy of you and the bicycle, plus thermal energy (heat in muscles, tyres, chain due to friction, air resistance) and a little sound. Khaane ki chemical energy → aapki aur cycle ki kinetic energy, saath mein thermal energy (muscles, tyres, chain mein friction aur air resistance se heat) aur thodi sound.
Pause and Ponder 4. Objects A (mass m) and B (mass 4m) have the same kinetic energy. Find the ratio of their speeds. Objects A (mass m) aur B (4m) ki kinetic energy same hai. Unki speeds ka ratio?
½ m vA² = ½ (4m) vB² → vA² = 4 vB² → vA : vB = 2 : 1.½ m vA² = ½ (4m) vB² → vA² = 4 vB² → vA : vB = 2 : 1।½ m vA² = ½ (4m) vB² → vA² = 4 vB² → vA : vB = 2 : 1.
Pause and Ponder 5. Does the kinetic energy of an object moving with constant velocity change with its position? Constant velocity se chalti cheez ki kinetic energy kya position ke saath badalti hai?
No. KE = ½mv² depends only on mass and speed; both are constant, so KE is the same everywhere. Nahi. KE = ½mv² sirf mass aur speed par nirbhar; dono constant hain, isliye KE har jagah same.
Pause and Ponder 6. Does the PE of an object near the Earth change if it moves horizontally at constant velocity? What if it is gradually raised? Earth ke paas cheez constant velocity se horizontal chale to kya PE badlegi? Dheere-dheere upar uthaayein to?
Horizontal motion: height unchanged → PE does not change. Raised vertically: h increases → PE = mgh increases steadily. Horizontal motion: height nahi badli → PE nahi badalti. Upar uthaane par: h badhta hai → PE = mgh badhti hai.
Pause and Ponder 7. For a ball falling from height h (Fig. 7.19), show that its mechanical energy just before hitting the ground is mgh. Pause and Ponder 7. h height se girti ball (Fig. 7.19) ke liye dikhaiye ki zameen chhoone se theek pehle uski mechanical energy mgh hai.
Just before impact the height ≈ 0, so PE = 0. Starting from rest, v² = u² + 2gh = 2gh, so KE = ½mv² = ½m(2gh) = mgh. Total = 0 + mgh = mgh, the same as at the top. Takkar se theek pehle height ≈ 0, isliye PE = 0. Rest se, v² = u² + 2gh = 2gh, isliye KE = ½mv² = ½m(2gh) = mgh. Total = 0 + mgh = mgh, top ke barabar.
Pause and Ponder 8. In a ball roller coaster (Fig. 7.22), how do KE and PE change at A, B and C? Why are later peaks (C, D, E) lower? Ball roller coaster (Fig. 7.22) mein A, B, C par KE aur PE kaise badalti hain? Baad ke peaks (C, D, E) neeche kyun hain?
At the highest point A the ball has maximum PE and (almost) zero KE; going down to B, PE turns into KE (KE maximum at the lowest point); climbing to C, KE turns back into PE. Some energy is lost as heat and sound because of friction and air resistance, so the ball cannot climb back to the original height — each later peak must be lower. Highest point A par ball ki PE maximum aur KE lagbhag zero; B tak neeche aate PE, KE mein badalti hai (sabse neeche KE maximum); C par chadhte KE phir PE banti hai. Friction aur air resistance se kuch energy heat aur sound ban jaati hai, isliye ball original height tak nahi chadh paati — baad ke peaks neeche hone chahiye.
Pause and Ponder 9. Why are hill roads built winding around in gentle slopes instead of going straight up? Pahaadi sadkein seedhi upar jaane ki jagah halki dhalaanon mein ghumaavdaar kyun banaai jaati hain?
A winding road is a long inclined plane: larger length L for the same height h gives a larger MA = L/h, so vehicles need a much smaller force to climb (and can brake safely going down). The work mgh is the same, spread over a longer distance. Ghumaavdaar sadak ek lamba inclined plane hai: same height h ke liye zyada length L se MA = L/h zyada, isliye vehicles ko chadhne mein bahut kam force lagta hai (aur utarte waqt safe braking). Work mgh wahi, par lambi doori mein banta.
Pause and Ponder 10. Why is climbing an inclined ladder easier than a vertical one (Fig. 7.30)? Jhuki seedhi chadhna khadi seedhi se aasaan kyun hai (Fig. 7.30)?
An inclined ladder acts like an inclined plane — you rise the same height over a longer path, so each step needs less force; part of your weight also rests on the steps. On a vertical ladder your arms and legs must lift your full weight directly. Jhuki seedhi inclined plane jaisi hai — utni hi height lambe path par chadhte hain, isliye har kadam mein kam force; weight ka kuch hissa steps par tika rehta hai. Khadi seedhi par haath-pairon ko poora weight seedhe uthaana padta hai.
Pause and Ponder 11. Why is it easier to open a can lid using a spoon (Fig. 7.35)? Chammach se dabbe ka dhakkan kholna aasaan kyun hai (Fig. 7.35)?
The spoon is a lever: the rim of the can is the fulcrum, the lid is the load very close to it, and your hand is far away. Long effort arm ÷ short load arm = large MA, so a small effort lifts the tight lid. Chammach ek lever hai: dabbe ka kinaara fulcrum, dhakkan uske bahut paas load, aur haath door. Lambi effort arm ÷ chhoti load arm = zyada MA, isliye kam effort se kasa dhakkan khulta hai.
Pause and Ponder 12. Why do you push a hard object closer to the fulcrum of scissors to cut it? Kathor cheez kaatne ke liye use kainchi ke fulcrum ke paas kyun dhakelte hain?
Near the fulcrum the load arm is short; with the same effort arm, effort × effort arm = load × load arm gives a much larger cutting force on the object. Fulcrum ke paas load arm chhoti hoti hai; same effort arm par, effort × effort arm = load × load arm se cheez par bahut zyada kaatne wala force lagta hai.
Pause and Ponder 13. Many perpetual motion machines (wheels, weights, magnets) were designed. Why can none of them work? Kai perpetual motion machines (pahiye, weights, magnets) banaai gayin. Unmein se koi kyun nahi chal sakti?
Energy cannot be created. A machine can give out at most the energy put into it, and in every real machine some energy is always lost as heat and sound through friction and air resistance. So without an energy input it slows down and stops; it can never keep doing useful work for ever. Energy banaai nahi ja sakti. Machine zyada se zyada utni hi energy de sakti hai jitni usmein daali gayi, aur har real machine mein friction aur air resistance se kuch energy heat aur sound bankar nikal jaati hai. Isliye energy diye bina wo dheemi hokar ruk jaati hai; hamesha useful work nahi kar sakti.

Crane m mass ko t time mein 10th floor tak, phir double time mein 20th floor tak uthaati hai. Kitni zyada energy aur power chahiye?
Height doubles (2h) so energy = mg(2h) = twice (an extra mgh, as much again). Power = 2mgh ÷ 2t = mgh/t — the same power, no extra power needed. Height double (2h), isliye energy = mg(2h) = double (utni hi extra mgh). Power = 2mgh ÷ 2t = mgh/t — power same, extra power nahi.
7. What decides the energy needed to raise a flag with a pulley? Does raising it slowly or quickly change the work? If the speed is doubled, how does the power change?7. Dheere ya tez fehraane se work badalta hai? Speed double ho to power?
Energy = mgh: the mass of the flag (with the moving part of the rope), g and the height of the pole (plus a little to overcome pulley friction). Speed does not change the work. Doubling the speed halves the time, so power P = W/t doubles. Energy = mgh: jhande ka mass (rassi ke chalte hisse ke saath), g aur khambe ki height (saath mein pulley ka thoda friction). Speed se work nahi badalta. Speed double → time aadha → power P = W/t double.

(ii) Initial KE = ½ × 2 × 20² = 400 J; top par PE = 2 × 10 × 19.4 = 388 J. Air resistance ka work = 388 − 400 = −12 J.
11. A 10 kg block on a frictionless floor has KE 180 J at 0 m; a variable force (Fig. 7.37) acts along its motion from 0 to 4 m. Find its speed at 0 m and at 4 m. (i) 180 = ½ × 10 × v² → v² = 36 → 6 m/s. (ii) Work = area under F–s graph: F rises 0→50 N over 0–1 m (25 J), stays 50 N over 1–3 m (100 J), falls 50→0 N over 3–4 m (25 J) → 150 J. KE at 4 m = 180 + 150 = 330 J → v² = 66 → v ≈ 8.1 m/s. No — the force is never opposite to the motion, so the acceleration is never negative (it is zero only at the ends).(i) 180 = ½ × 10 × v² → v² = 36 → 6 m/s। (i) 180 = ½ × 10 × v² → v² = 36 → 6 m/s. (ii) Work = F–s graph ke neeche area: 0–1 m mein F 0→50 N (25 J), 1–3 m mein 50 N (100 J), 3–4 m mein 50→0 N (25 J) → 150 J. 4 m par KE = 180 + 150 = 330 J → v² = 66 → v ≈ 8.1 m/s. Nahi — force kabhi motion ke opposite nahi, isliye acceleration kabhi negative nahi (sirf ends par zero).

(i) From A (0 s) to B (1 s) the speed stays 35 m/s — uniform motion (the driver’s reaction time, brakes not yet applied). (ii) KE = ½ × 1000 × 35² = 612500 J (≈ 6.1 × 10⁵ J). (iii) Work by brakes = change in KE = 0 − 612500 = −612500 J. (iv) Mostly into heat (thermal energy) in the brakes and tyres, with some sound.(i) A (0 s) Frictionless track par 0.5 kg ball ka PE-displacement graph (Fig. 7.39): O par v = 0 aur PE = 30 J. P, Q, R par velocity?
Total mechanical energy = 30 J (all PE at O). P (PE = 20 J): KE = 10 J → ½ × 0.5 × v² = 10 → v² = 40 → v ≈ 6.3 m/s. Q (PE = 30 J): KE = 0 → v = 0 (it just reaches Q). R (PE = 40 J) needs more than the 30 J available, so the ball never reaches R.कुल यांत्रिक ऊर्जा = 30 J (O पर सब PE)। P (PE = 20 J): KE = 10 J → ½ × 0.5 × v² = 10 → v² = 40 → v ≈ 6.3 m/s। Total mechanical energy = 30 J (O par sab PE). P (PE = 20 J): KE = 10 J → ½ × 0.5 × v² = 10 → v² = 40 → v ≈ 6.3 m/s. Q (PE = 30 J): KE = 0 → v = 0 (bas Q tak pahunchti hai). R (PE = 40 J) ke liye available 30 J se zyada chahiye, isliye ball R tak kabhi nahi pahunchti.
