Introduction
In Chapter 12 we saw that an atom’s positive charge and almost all of its mass sit in a tiny centre — the nucleus. α-particle scattering showed that the nucleus is smaller than the atom by a factor of about 10⁴ in radius, so its volume is only about 10⁻¹² of the atom’s volume. An atom is almost empty: if an atom were blown up to the size of a classroom, the nucleus would be the size of a pinhead — yet it holds more than 99.9% of the atom’s mass. Chapter 12 mein humne dekha ki atom ka positive charge aur lagbhag saara mass ek bahut chhote centre — nucleus — mein hota hai. α-particle scattering se pata chala ki nucleus ka radius atom se lagbhag 10⁴ guna chhota hai, isliye uska volume atom ke volume ka sirf lagbhag 10⁻¹² guna hai. Atom lagbhag khaali hai: agar atom ko ek classroom jitna bada kar dein, to nucleus ek pinhead jitna hoga — phir bhi usmein atom ka 99.9% se zyada mass hota hai.The nucleus is very, very small, but it has almost all the mass of the atom.
This chapter answers three questions: What is a nucleus made of? How is it held together? And what happens when nuclei change — in radioactivity, fission and fusion? Wo kis force se juda rehta hai? Aur jab nuclei badalte hain to kya hota hai — radioactivity, fission aur fusion mein?
13.2Atomic Masses and Composition of Nucleusपरमाणु द्रव्यमान एवं नाभिक की संरचनाAtomic Masses aur Nucleus ki Composition
The mass of a ¹²C atom is 1.992647 × 10⁻²⁶ kg — the kilogram is far too big a unit for such tiny masses. So we use the atomic mass unit (u), defined as one-twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom:¹²C Isliye hum atomic mass unit (u) use karte hain, jo carbon-12 atom ke mass ka 12th hissa hai:For atoms we use a tiny unit of mass, u. One u is 1/12 of a carbon-12 atom.
Atomic masses in u are close to whole-number multiples of the hydrogen atom’s mass — but not always. Chlorine’s atomic mass is 35.46 u. Mass spectrometers explain why: most elements are a mixture of atoms of the same element with different masses, called isotopes (Greek: “same place” in the periodic table). Chlorine has two isotopes, 34.98 u (75.4%) and 36.98 u (24.6%). Their weighted average isu इनका भारित औसत हैu mein atomic masses hydrogen atom ke mass ke lagbhag whole-number multiples hote hain — par hamesha nahi. Chlorine ka atomic mass 35.46 u hai. Mass spectrometer se iska reason pata chala: zyaadatar elements ek hi element ke alag-alag mass wale atoms ka mixture hote hain, jinhe isotopes kehte hain (Greek: periodic table mein “same place”). Chlorine ke do isotopes hain, 34.98 u (75.4%) aur 36.98 u (24.6%). Inka weighted average haiMost elements are a mix of isotopes. The atomic mass is the average, weighted by how common each isotope is.
Even hydrogen has three isotopes, of masses 1.0078 u, 2.0141 u and 3.0160 u. The nucleus of the commonest one (99.985%) is the proton. Its mass equals the hydrogen atom’s mass (1.00783 u) minus one electron’s mass (me = 0.00055 u):हाइड्रोजन के भी तीन समस्थानिक हैं, जिनके द्रव्यमान 1.0078 u, 2.0141 u और 3.0160 u हैं। Sabse common (99.985%) isotope ka nucleus proton hai. Iska mass hydrogen atom ke mass (1.00783 u) mein se ek electron ka mass (me = 0.00055 u) ghataane par milta hai:
The other two isotopes are deuterium (²H) and tritium (³H). Tritium nuclei are unstable, so tritium does not occur naturally; it is made in laboratories. Baaki do isotopes deuterium (²H) aur tritium (³H) hain. Tritium ke nuclei unstable hote hain, isliye ye nature mein nahi milta; ise laboratories mein banaya jaata hai.
Where is the charge? It was once thought the nucleus might contain electrons, but quantum theory rules this out — all the electrons are outside the nucleus. A neutral atom has Z electrons (Z = atomic number) with total charge −Ze, so the nucleus has charge +Ze, and the number of protons in it is exactly Z.आवेश कहाँ है? Charge kahan hai? Pehle maana jaata tha ki nucleus mein electrons ho sakte hain, par quantum theory ne ise galat saabit kiya — saare electrons nucleus ke bahar hain. Neutral atom mein Z electrons (Z = atomic number) hote hain jinka total charge −Ze hai, isliye nucleus ka charge +Ze hai aur usmein protons ki sankhya theek Z hai.Electrons are outside. The nucleus has Z protons, so its charge is +Ze.
Neutron ki Khoj
Deuterium and tritium are isotopes of hydrogen, so each nucleus has just one proton. But the masses of the H, D and T nuclei are in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3. So deuterium and tritium nuclei must also contain some neutral matter — about one and two proton-masses of it. In 1932 James Chadwick bombarded beryllium with α-particles and found a neutral radiation that could knock protons out of light nuclei (helium, carbon, nitrogen). If that radiation were photons, energy and momentum conservation demanded far more energy than the α-particles could supply. Chadwick solved the puzzle: the radiation is a new neutral particle, the neutron, with mass very nearly that of a proton. (Nobel Prize 1935.) Deuterium aur tritium hydrogen ke isotopes hain, isliye har nucleus mein sirf ek proton hai. Par H, D aur T ke nuclei ke masses 1 : 2 : 3 ke ratio mein hain. To deuterium aur tritium ke nuclei mein kuch neutral matter bhi hona chahiye — lagbhag ek aur do proton-mass jitna. 1932 mein James Chadwick ne beryllium par α-particles ki bauchhaar ki aur ek neutral radiation paaya jo light nuclei (helium, carbon, nitrogen) se protons bahar nikaal sakta tha. Agar wo radiation photons hota, to energy aur momentum conservation ke liye α-particles se milne wali energy se kahin zyada energy chahiye hoti. Chadwick ne ye puzzle solve kiya: ye radiation ek naya neutral particle, neutron hai, jiska mass lagbhag proton jitna hai. (Nobel Prize 1935.)Some neutral particles must be in the nucleus. Chadwick found them in 1932: neutrons.
A free neutron, unlike a free proton, is unstable: it decays into a proton, an electron and an antineutrino, with a mean life of about 1000 s. Inside a nucleus it is stable. Free proton ke ulat, free neutron unstable hota hai: ye lagbhag 1000 s ki mean life ke saath ek proton, ek electron aur ek antineutrino mein decay ho jaata hai. Nucleus ke andar ye stable hai.
Now the composition of any nucleus can be described with three numbers. A proton or a neutron is called a nucleon, so the number of nucleons in a nucleus is its mass number A.अब किसी भी नाभिक की संरचना तीन संख्याओं से बताई जा सकती है।
A nuclear species, or nuclide, is written AZX, where X is the chemical symbol. Gold is 19779Au: 197 nucleons, of which 79 are protons and 118 are neutrons (see N = A − Z). Kisi nuclear species, ya nuclide, ko AZX likhte hain, jahan X chemical symbol hai. Gold 19779Au hai: 197 nucleons, jinmein 79 protons aur 118 neutrons hain (N = A − Z dekhiye).
Isotopes of an element have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons: deuterium ²₁H has one proton and one neutron; tritium ³₁H has one proton and two neutrons. Gold has 32 isotopes, from A = 173 to A = 204. Isotopes have identical electronic structure, so they have identical chemistry and sit in the same place in the periodic table. Kisi element ke isotopes mein protons ki sankhya same par neutrons ki sankhya alag hoti hai: deuterium ²₁H mein ek proton aur ek neutron; tritium ³₁H mein ek proton aur do neutrons. Gold ke 32 isotopes hain, A = 173 se A = 204 tak. Isotopes ki electronic structure ek jaisi hoti hai, isliye unka chemical behaviour same hota hai aur wo periodic table mein ek hi jagah hote hain.
Nuclides with the same mass number A are isobars (e.g. ³₁H and ³₂He). Nuclides with the same neutron number N but different Z are isotones (e.g. ¹⁹⁸₈₀Hg and ¹⁹⁷₇₉Au, both with N = 118). Same mass number A wale nuclides isobars kehlaate hain (jaise ³₁H aur ³₂He). Same neutron number N par alag Z wale nuclides isotones kehlaate hain (jaise ¹⁹⁸₈₀Hg aur ¹⁹⁷₇₉Au, dono mein N = 118).
Don’t mix them up. Isotopes: same protons (Z). Isobars: same A. Isotones: same neutrons (N). Isotopes are the same element; isobars and isotones are different elements. Inhe mix mat kijiye. Isotopes: same protons (Z). Isobars: same A. Isotones: same neutrons (N). Isotopes ek hi element hote hain; isobars aur isotones alag elements hote hain.
13.3Size of the Nucleusनाभिक का साइज़Nucleus ka Size
At Rutherford’s suggestion, Geiger and Marsden fired α-particles at thin gold foils. An α-particle of kinetic energy 5.5 MeV gets no closer than about 4.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m to a gold nucleus, and the scattering is fully explained by Coulomb repulsion alone. So the gold nucleus must be smaller than 4.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m. With α-particles of higher energy, they come closer; at some point the short-range nuclear force starts to act and the scattering stops matching Rutherford’s pure-Coulomb calculation. The distance where this deviation sets in gives the size of the nucleus. To gold nucleus 4.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m se chhota hona chahiye. Zyada energy wale α-particles aur paas aate hain; kisi point par short-range nuclear force kaam karne lagta hai aur scattering Rutherford ki pure-Coulomb calculation se match nahi karti. Jis doori par ye deviation shuru hota hai, usse nucleus ka size pata chalta hai.α-particles cannot get closer than 4 × 10⁻¹⁴ m to gold, so the gold nucleus is smaller than that.
Today nuclear sizes are measured accurately by scattering fast electrons from targets. A nucleus of mass number A is found to have radiusआज नाभिकों का साइज़ लक्ष्यों से तेज़ इलेक्ट्रॉनों के प्रकीर्णन द्वारा सटीकता से मापा जाता है। Mass number A wale nucleus ka radius paaya gaya hai
So the volume of a nucleus, ∝ R³ ∝ A, is simply proportional to the number of nucleons. Mass is also ∝ A. Therefore the density of nuclear matter is the same for all nuclei — about 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³. Nuclei behave like drops of a liquid of constant density. Compare water: 10³ kg m⁻³. Ordinary matter is light because atoms are mostly empty space; nuclear matter has no such empty space. To nucleus ka volume, ∝ R³ ∝ A, seedha nucleons ki sankhya ke proportional hai. Mass bhi ∝ A hai. Isliye nuclear matter ki density saare nuclei ke liye same hai — lagbhag 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³. Nuclei constant density wale liquid ki boondon jaisa behave karte hain. Paani se compare kijiye: 10³ kg m⁻³. Ordinary matter halka hai kyunki atoms zyaadatar khaali hain; nuclear matter mein aisi khaali jagah nahi hoti.Bigger nuclei have more volume in exact proportion to their mass, so every nucleus has the same huge density.

Mass m = 55.85 × 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ kg = 9.27 × 10⁻²⁶ kg. Radius R = 1.2 × 10⁻¹⁵ × 56^(1/3) m, so volume = (4π/3)(1.2 × 10⁻¹⁵)³ × 56 m³ = 4.05 × 10⁻⁴³ m³. Density = mass/volume = 9.27 × 10⁻²⁶ / 4.05 × 10⁻⁴³ = 2.29 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³. Neutron stars have densities comparable to this — they are like one giant nucleus. Mass m = 55.85 × 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ kg = 9.27 × 10⁻²⁶ kg. Radius R = 1.2 × 10⁻¹⁵ × 56^(1/3) m, to volume = (4π/3)(1.2 × 10⁻¹⁵)³ × 56 m³ = 4.05 × 10⁻⁴³ m³. Density = mass/volume = 9.27 × 10⁻²⁶ / 4.05 × 10⁻⁴³ = 2.29 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³. Neutron stars ki density iske comparable hai — wo ek bahut bade nucleus jaise hain.
A teaspoon of nuclear matter. 5 cm³ of matter at 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³ would have a mass of about 1.2 × 10¹² kg — more than a billion tonnes. Such matter exists in neutron stars, the collapsed cores of exploded stars. Ek chammach nuclear matter. 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³ density wale 5 cm³ matter ka mass lagbhag 1.2 × 10¹² kg hoga — ek arab ton se zyada. Mass-Energy aur Nuclear Binding Energy
13.4.1Mass – Energyद्रव्यमान – ऊर्जाMass – Energy
Before Einstein, mass and energy were thought to be conserved separately. Einstein’s special theory of relativity showed that mass is a form of energy: mass-energy can be converted into other forms, such as kinetic energy, and vice versa. The energy equivalent of mass m isआइंस्टाइन से पहले माना जाता था कि द्रव्यमान और ऊर्जा अलग-अलग संरक्षित रहते हैं। Einstein ki special theory of relativity ne dikhaaya ki mass energy ka hi ek roop hai: mass-energy ko kinetic energy jaise doosre roopon mein badla ja sakta hai, aur ulta bhi. Mass m ki equivalent energy haiMass and energy are two faces of the same thing. A little mass equals a lot of energy.

E = mc² = 10⁻³ kg × (3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹)² = 10⁻³ × 9 × 10¹⁶ = 9 × 10¹³ J. Converting just one gram of matter to energy releases an enormous amount — about what a large power station gives in a day.E = mc² = 10⁻³ kg × (3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹)² = 10⁻³ × 9 × 10¹⁶ = 9 × 10¹³ J। केवल एक ग्राम द्रव्य को ऊर्जा में बदलने से अत्यधिक ऊर्जा निकलती है — लगभग उतनी जितनी एक बड़ा बिजलीघर एक दिन में देता है।E = mc² = 10⁻³ kg × (3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹)² = 10⁻³ × 9 × 10¹⁶ = 9 × 10¹³ J. Sirf ek gram matter ko energy mein badalne se bahut zyada energy nikalti hai — lagbhag utni jitni ek bada power station ek din mein deta hai.
Einstein’s relation has been verified in nuclear reactions among nucleons, nuclei, electrons and other particles. In any reaction, the total energy before equals the total energy after, provided the energy of mass (mc²) is included. So we no longer speak of two separate laws, but of one unified law of conservation of mass-energy — and nuclear physics gives the most convincing evidence for it. Einstein ka relation nucleons, nuclei, electrons aur doosre particles ki nuclear reactions mein verify kiya gaya hai. Kisi bhi reaction mein shuru ki total energy = baad ki total energy, agar mass ki energy (mc²) bhi jodi jaaye. Isliye ab hum do alag laws ki nahi, balki mass-energy conservation ke ek unified law ki baat karte hain — aur iska sabse strong proof nuclear physics deti hai.
Nuclear binding energy
A nucleus is made of protons and neutrons, so you would expect its mass to equal the total mass of its protons and neutrons. But the nuclear mass M is always less. Take ¹⁶₈O (8 protons, 8 neutrons). Mass of 8 neutrons = 8 × 1.00866 u; of 8 protons = 8 × 1.00727 u; of 8 electrons = 8 × 0.00055 u. So the expected mass of the ¹⁶O atom is 8 × 2.01648 u = 16.13184 u. Mass spectroscopy gives the atomic mass of ¹⁶O as 15.99493 u (subtracting 8 electrons, the nucleus is 15.99053 u). The ¹⁶O nucleus is lighter than its constituents by 0.13691 u. Nucleus protons aur neutrons se bana hai, isliye aap expect karenge ki uska mass uske protons aur neutrons ke total mass ke barabar ho. Par nuclear mass M hamesha kam hota hai. ¹⁶₈O lijiye (8 protons, 8 neutrons). 8 neutrons ka mass = 8 × 1.00866 u; 8 protons ka = 8 × 1.00727 u; 8 electrons ka = 8 × 0.00055 u. To ¹⁶O atom ka expected mass 8 × 2.01648 u = 16.13184 u hai. Mass spectroscopy se ¹⁶O ka atomic mass 15.99493 u milta hai (8 electrons ghataane par nucleus 15.99053 u). ¹⁶O nucleus apne constituents se 0.13691 u halka hai.Put 8 protons and 8 neutrons together and the result weighs LESS than the parts. The missing mass is the mass defect.
Nucleus or atom — both give 0.13691 u. The book lists 8 electrons too, but a nucleus has no electrons, so its expected mass is 8 × (1.00727 + 1.00866) = 8 × 2.01593 u = 16.12744 u, and the measured nucleus mass is 15.99493 − 8 × 0.00055 = 15.99053 u: ΔM = 16.12744 − 15.99053 = 0.13691 u. If you instead compare whole atoms (add 8 electrons: 8 × 2.01648 = 16.13184 u, atomic mass 15.99493 u), the electrons cancel and you get the same 0.13691 u. Nucleus lijiye ya atom — dono se 0.13691 u. Book 8 electrons bhi likhti hai, par nucleus mein electrons nahi hote, isliye nucleus ka expected mass 8 × (1.00727 + 1.00866) = 8 × 2.01593 u = 16.12744 u hai, aur measured nucleus mass 15.99493 − 8 × 0.00055 = 15.99053 u: ΔM = 16.12744 − 15.99053 = 0.13691 u. Agar aap poore atoms compare karein (8 electrons jodkar: 8 × 2.01648 = 16.13184 u, atomic mass 15.99493 u), to electrons cancel ho jaate hain aur wahi 0.13691 u milta hai.
The difference between the mass of the constituents and the mass of the nucleus is the mass defect ΔM:अवयवों के द्रव्यमान और नाभिक के द्रव्यमान का अंतर द्रव्यमान क्षति ΔM है:Constituents ke mass aur nucleus ke mass ka difference mass defect ΔM hai:
What does the missing mass mean? Because the oxygen nucleus has less mass than its 8 protons and 8 neutrons when free, it also has less energy than them. To break the nucleus into 8 free protons and 8 free neutrons you must supply the extra energy ΔMc². Turned around: when the nucleons come together to form the nucleus, this energy is released. This energy is the binding energy Eb of the nucleus:लुप्त द्रव्यमान का क्या अर्थ है? Kyunki oxygen nucleus ka mass uske 8 free protons aur 8 free neutrons se kam hai, uski energy bhi kam hai. Nucleus ko 8 free protons aur 8 free neutrons mein todne ke liye aapko extra energy ΔMc² deni padti hai. Ulte roop mein: jab nucleons milkar nucleus banaate hain, to yahi energy release hoti hai. Ye energy nucleus ki binding energy Eb hai:Binding energy = energy needed to pull a nucleus fully apart = energy released when it forms.

1 u = 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ kg. Energy = mc² = 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ × (2.9979 × 10⁸)² J = 1.4924 × 10⁻¹⁰ J. In eV: 1.4924 × 10⁻¹⁰ / 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ = 0.9315 × 10⁹ eV = 931.5 MeV. So 1 u = 931.5 MeV/c².1 u = 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ kg। ऊर्जा = mc² = 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ × (2.9979 × 10⁸)² J = 1.4924 × 10⁻¹⁰ J। eV में: 1.4924 × 10⁻¹⁰ / 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ = 0.9315 × 10⁹ eV = 931.5 MeV। अतः 1 u = 931.5 MeV/c²।1 u = 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ kg. Energy = mc² = 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ × (2.9979 × 10⁸)² J = 1.4924 × 10⁻¹⁰ J. eV mein: 1.4924 × 10⁻¹⁰ / 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ = 0.9315 × 10⁹ eV = 931.5 MeV. To 1 u = 931.5 MeV/c².
For ¹⁶O, ΔM = 0.13691 u = 0.13691 × 931.5 MeV/c² = 127.5 MeV/c². So the energy needed to separate ¹⁶O into its 16 nucleons — its binding energy — is 127.5 MeV, i.e. about 7.97 MeV per nucleon.¹⁶O के लिए ΔM = 0.13691 u = 0.13691 × 931.5 MeV/c² = 127.5 MeV/c²। ¹⁶O ke liye ΔM = 0.13691 u = 0.13691 × 931.5 MeV/c² = 127.5 MeV/c². To ¹⁶O ko uske 16 nucleons mein alag karne ke liye zaroori energy — uski binding energy — 127.5 MeV hai, yaani per nucleon lagbhag 7.97 MeV.
Shortcut you will use all the time: mass in u × 931.5 = energy in MeV. Also, when you use atomic masses, use mH = 1.007825 u (hydrogen atom) instead of mp — the electron masses then cancel automatically: Eb = [Z mH + N mn − Matom] × 931.5 MeV. Har baar kaam aane wali trick: u mein mass × 931.5 = MeV mein energy. Saath hi, jab aap atomic masses lein, to mp ki jagah mH = 1.007825 u (hydrogen atom) lijiye — electrons ke masses apne aap cancel ho jaate hain: Eb = [Z mH + N mn − Matom] × 931.5 MeV.

If neutrons and protons are brought together to form a nucleus, energy Eb is released; to separate them we must supply Eb. We cannot actually tear a nucleus apart this way, but Eb is a convenient measure of how well the nucleus is held together. An even more useful measure is the binding energy per nucleon — the average energy needed to remove one nucleon:यदि न्यूट्रॉन और प्रोटॉन मिलकर नाभिक बनाते हैं, तो ऊर्जा Eb मुक्त होती है; उन्हें अलग करने के लिए Eb देनी पड़ती है। इससे भी उपयोगी माप है प्रति न्यूक्लिऑन बंधन ऊर्जा — एक न्यूक्लिऑन को अलग करने के लिए औसत ऊर्जा:Agar neutrons aur protons milkar nucleus banaate hain, to energy Eb release hoti hai; unhe alag karne ke liye Eb deni padti hai. Hum sach mein nucleus ko is tarah nahi tod sakte, par Eb ye naapne ka convenient tareeka hai ki nucleus kitni achchhi tarah bandha hai. Isse bhi useful measure hai binding energy per nucleon — ek nucleon ko alag karne ke liye average energy:
Figure 13.1 plots Ebn against A for a large number of nuclei (see the curve). Figure 13.1 mein bahut saare nuclei ke liye Ebn ko A ke against plot kiya gaya hai (curve dekhiye). Iske main features:
- (i) Ebn is practically constant — independent of A — for nuclei of middle mass number, 30 < A < 170 (flat part). The curve has a maximum of about 8.75 MeV near A = 56 (measured: 8.79 MeV for ⁵⁶Fe) (peak) and is about 7.6 MeV at A = 238 (uranium).(i) मध्यम द्रव्यमान संख्या (30 < A < 170) वाले नाभिकों के लिए Ebn लगभग स्थिर है — A पर निर्भर नहीं (समतल भाग)। (i) Middle mass number (30 < A < 170) wale nuclei ke liye Ebn practically constant hai — A par depend nahi karta (flat part). Curve ka maximum lagbhag 8.75 MeV, A = 56 ke paas hai (measured: ⁵⁶Fe ke liye 8.79 MeV) (peak) aur A = 238 par lagbhag 7.6 MeV hai (uranium).
- (ii) Ebn is lower both for light nuclei (A < 30) and for heavy nuclei (A > 170).(ii) Ebn हल्के नाभिकों (A < 30) और भारी नाभिकों (A > 170) दोनों के लिए कम है।(ii) Ebn light nuclei (A < 30) aur heavy nuclei (A > 170) dono ke liye kam hai.
Slide (or tap the graph) to any mass number. See the nucleus, its Ebn and total Eb from real masses, and whether fusion or fission moves it towards the peak. Then try “split it” and “fuse two”. Kisi bhi mass number par slide kijiye (ya graph par tap kijiye). Real masses se nucleus, uski Ebn aur total Eb dekhiye, aur ye bhi ki fusion ya fission use peak ki taraf le jaata hai. Phir “split it” aur “fuse two” try kijiye.
From these two observations we can draw four conclusions:इन दो प्रेक्षणों से हम चार निष्कर्ष निकाल सकते हैं:In do observations se hum chaar conclusions nikaal sakte hain:
- (i) The force that binds nucleons is attractive and strong enough to give a binding energy of a few MeV per nucleon.(i) (i) Nucleons ko baandhne wala force attractive hai aur itna strong hai ki per nucleon kuch MeV ki binding energy de sake.
- (ii) The constancy of Ebn for 30 < A < 170 is because the nuclear force is short-ranged. A nucleon deep inside a large nucleus feels only the neighbours within the range of the force — say at most p of them. Its binding energy is then about pk (k = a constant with dimensions of energy), whatever the size of the nucleus. Adding more nucleons does not change the binding of a nucleon inside, and since most nucleons of a large nucleus are inside, not on the surface, Ebn stays nearly constant. This property — a nucleon influences only nucleons close to it — is called the saturation of the nuclear force.(ii) 30 < A < 170 के लिए Ebn का स्थिर रहना इसलिए है क्योंकि नाभिकीय बल लघु-परासी है। (ii) 30 < A < 170 ke liye Ebn ka constant rehna isliye hai kyunki nuclear force short-ranged hai. Bade nucleus ke andar ka koi nucleon sirf un neighbours ko feel karta hai jo force ki range mein hain — maan lijiye maximum p. Tab uski binding energy lagbhag pk hoti hai (k = energy ki dimension wala ek constant), nucleus chahe jitna bada ho. Aur nucleons jodne se andar ke nucleon ki binding nahi badalti, aur bade nucleus ke zyaadatar nucleons surface par nahi, andar hote hain, isliye Ebn lagbhag constant rehti hai. Is property — ki ek nucleon sirf apne paas ke nucleons ko affect karta hai — ko nuclear force ka saturation kehte hain. Each nucleon only “feels” its close neighbours, so adding more nucleons does not change how tightly each one is held.
- (iii) A very heavy nucleus (say A = 240) has a lower Ebn than a nucleus with A = 120. So if an A = 240 nucleus breaks into two A = 120 nuclei, the nucleons become more tightly bound and energy is released — this is fission (Section 13.7.1) (fission side).(iii) एक बहुत भारी नाभिक (मान लीजिए A = 240) की Ebn, A = 120 वाले नाभिक से कम होती है। (iii) Ek bahut bhaari nucleus (maan lijiye A = 240) ki Ebn, A = 120 wale nucleus se kam hoti hai. Isliye agar A = 240 wala nucleus do A = 120 nuclei mein toote, to nucleons zyada tightly bound ho jaate hain aur energy release hoti hai — yahi fission hai (Section 13.7.1) (fission side).
- (iv) If two very light nuclei (A ≤ 10) join into a heavier one, the Ebn of the product is higher than that of the light nuclei. The final system is more tightly bound, so again energy is released — this is fusion, the energy source of the Sun (Section 13.7.2) (fusion side).(iv) यदि दो बहुत हल्के नाभिक (A ≤ 10) मिलकर एक भारी नाभिक बनाएँ, तो उत्पाद की Ebn हल्के नाभिकों से अधिक होती है। (iv) Agar do bahut light nuclei (A ≤ 10) milkar ek bhaari nucleus banaayein, to product ki Ebn light nuclei se zyada hoti hai. Final system zyada tightly bound hai, isliye phir energy release hoti hai — yahi fusion hai, Sun ki energy ka source (Section 13.7.2) (fusion side).
Bumps on the curve. Although the curve is smooth and slowly varying overall, it shows peaks at nuclides like ⁴He, ¹²C and ¹⁶O. This is taken as evidence of an atom-like shell structure inside nuclei. (Exact values from measured masses: ⁴He 7.07, ¹⁶O 7.98, ⁵⁶Fe 8.79 MeV; strictly the highest value of all belongs to ⁶²Ni, 8.795 MeV — so close to ⁵⁶Fe that the peak is described as “near A = 56”.) Curve par ubhaar. Waise to poora curve smooth aur dheere-dheere badalne wala hai, par isme ⁴He, ¹²C aur ¹⁶O jaise nuclides par peaks dikhte hain. Ise nuclei ke andar atom jaisi shell structure ka proof maana jaata hai. (Measured masses se exact values: ⁴He 7.07, ¹⁶O 7.98, ⁵⁶Fe 8.79 MeV; strictly sabse zyada value ⁶²Ni ki hai, 8.795 MeV — ⁵⁶Fe ke itna paas ki peak ko “A = 56 ke paas” kaha jaata hai.)
13.5Nuclear Forceनाभिकीय बलNuclear Force
The force that governs atomic electrons is the familiar Coulomb force. But for middle-mass nuclei the binding energy is about 8 MeV per nucleon — far larger than binding energies in atoms (a few eV). So a strong attractive force of a totally different kind must hold the nucleus together: strong enough to beat the repulsion between the positively charged protons, and to pack both protons and neutrons into the tiny nuclear volume. Experiments from 1930 to 1950 revealed its main features:परमाणु के इलेक्ट्रॉनों को नियंत्रित करने वाला बल परिचित कूलॉम बल है। Par middle-mass nuclei ke liye binding energy lagbhag 8 MeV per nucleon hai — atoms ki binding energies (kuch eV) se bahut zyada. To nucleus ko baandhe rakhne ke liye bilkul alag tarah ka strong attractive force hona chahiye: itna strong ki positively charged protons ke beech repulsion ko hara sake, aur protons aur neutrons dono ko nucleus ke chhote se volume mein baandh sake. 1930 se 1950 ke experiments se iske main features pata chale:A new, very strong attractive force holds the nucleus together — the nuclear force.
- (i) Much stronger than the Coulomb force between charges or the gravitational force between masses. It must dominate the Coulomb repulsion between protons inside the nucleus. (Gravity is much weaker even than the Coulomb force.)(i) (i) Charges ke beech Coulomb force ya masses ke beech gravitational force se kahin zyada strong. Ise nucleus ke andar protons ke beech Coulomb repulsion par haavi hona padta hai. (Gravity to Coulomb force se bhi bahut weak hai.)
- (ii) Short range. The force between two nucleons falls rapidly to zero when they are more than a few femtometres apart. This causes saturation in medium and large nuclei, the reason why Ebn is nearly constant. The potential energy of a pair of nucleons is minimum at r₀ ≈ 0.8 fm: the force is attractive for r > 0.8 fm and strongly repulsive for r < 0.8 fm (see r₀).(ii) लघु परास। (ii) Short range.
- (iii) Charge-independent. The nuclear force between neutron–neutron, proton–neutron and proton–proton is approximately the same. It does not depend on electric charge.(iii) (iii) Charge par depend nahi. Neutron–neutron, proton–neutron aur proton–proton ke beech nuclear force lagbhag same hai. Ye electric charge par depend nahi karta.
Drag the second nucleon closer or farther. The marker moves on the potential-energy curve and the arrows show whether the nuclear force is attractive, zero or repulsive. Switch to two protons to add the (much weaker) Coulomb push. Doosre nucleon ko paas ya door kheenchiye. Marker potential-energy curve par chalta hai aur arrows dikhaate hain ki nuclear force attractive, zero ya repulsive hai. Do protons chunkar (kahin weak) Coulomb push bhi jodiye.
Unlike Coulomb’s law or Newton’s law of gravitation, there is no simple mathematical formula for the nuclear force. Coulomb’s law ya Newton ke gravitation law ke ulat, nuclear force ka koi simple mathematical formula nahi hai.
Common mistake: “the nuclear force is attractive at all distances.” No — below about 0.8 fm it becomes strongly repulsive. That repulsive core is why nucleons don’t collapse into each other and why nuclear density is constant.
Radioactivity
A. H. Becquerel discovered radioactivity in 1896, purely by accident. He was studying fluorescence and phosphorescence of compounds exposed to visible light. After illuminating pieces of uranium–potassium sulphate, he wrapped them in black paper and separated the package from a photographic plate by a piece of silver. Hours later the developed plate was blackened — something emitted by the compound had passed through both the black paper and the silver.ए. A. Uranium–potassium sulphate ke tukdon par light daalne ke baad unhone unhe kaale kaagaz mein lapeta aur packet ko chaandi ke ek tukde se photographic plate se alag rakha. Kai ghante baad develop ki gayi plate kaali ho gayi — compound se nikli kisi cheez ne kaala kaagaz aur chaandi dono paar kar liye the.Becquerel found by accident that uranium gives out invisible rays that can pass through paper and metal.
Radioactivity is a nuclear phenomenon in which an unstable nucleus decays (radioactive decay). Three types of decay occur in nature:रेडियोऐक्टिवता एक नाभिकीय परिघटना है जिसमें अस्थायी नाभिक क्षयित होता है (रेडियोऐक्टिव क्षय)। Radioactivity ek nuclear phenomenon hai jismein unstable nucleus decay hota hai (radioactive decay). Nature mein teen tarah ke decay hote hain:
- (i) α-decay: a helium nucleus ⁴₂He is emitted (α).(i) α-क्षय: एक हीलियम नाभिक ⁴₂He उत्सर्जित होता है (α)।(i) α-decay: ek helium nucleus ⁴₂He emit hota hai (α).
- (ii) β-decay: electrons or positrons (particles with the same mass as electrons but exactly opposite charge) are emitted (β).(ii) β-क्षय: इलेक्ट्रॉन या पॉज़िट्रॉन (इलेक्ट्रॉन जितने द्रव्यमान पर ठीक विपरीत आवेश वाले कण) उत्सर्जित होते हैं (β)।(ii) β-decay: electrons ya positrons (electron jitne mass par bilkul opposite charge wale particles) emit hote hain (β).
- (iii) γ-decay: high-energy photons (hundreds of keV or more) are emitted (γ).(iii) γ-क्षय: उच्च ऊर्जा वाले फ़ोटॉन (सैकड़ों keV या अधिक) उत्सर्जित होते हैं (γ)।(iii) γ-decay: high-energy photons (sainkdon keV ya zyada) emit hote hain (γ).
Why are some nuclei unstable? Stability needs a neutron : proton ratio of about 1 : 1 for light nuclei, rising to about 3 : 2 for heavy nuclei (extra neutrons help overcome the growing repulsion among protons). Nuclei away from this ratio — with too many neutrons or protons — are unstable. Only about 10% of known isotopes are stable. Kuch nuclei unstable kyun hote hain? Stability ke liye neutron : proton ratio light nuclei ke liye lagbhag 1 : 1 aur heavy nuclei ke liye lagbhag 3 : 2 hona chahiye (extra neutrons protons ke beech badhte repulsion ko jhelne mein madad karte hain). Is ratio se door — bahut zyada neutrons ya protons wale — nuclei unstable hote hain. Known isotopes mein se sirf lagbhag 10% stable hain.
Beyond the current book (for curious toppers): a radioactive sample decays at random, but on average N = N₀e^(−λt), where λ is the decay constant (s⁻¹). The half-life T½ = ln 2/λ = 0.693/λ is the time for half the nuclei to decay; the mean life τ = 1/λ; the activity R = λN is measured in becquerel (1 Bq = 1 decay per second). The NCERT summary table still lists these quantities, though the decay-law section is no longer in the text. Current book se aage (curious toppers ke liye): radioactive sample randomly decay hota hai, par average mein N = N₀e^(−λt), jahan λ decay constant (s⁻¹) hai. NCERT ki summary table mein ye quantities ab bhi hain, halaanki decay-law ka section ab text mein nahi hai.
13.7Nuclear Energyनाभिकीय ऊर्जाNuclear Energy
The Ebn curve has a long flat middle (A = 30 to 170) at about 8.0 MeV, and lower values for light (A < 30) and heavy (A > 170) nuclei. The greater the binding energy, the less the total mass of a bound system. So whenever nuclei with less total binding energy change into nuclei with greater binding energy, there is a net release of energy. This happens when a heavy nucleus splits into intermediate-mass fragments (fission) or when light nuclei join into a heavier nucleus (fusion).Ebn वक्र का एक लंबा समतल मध्य भाग (A = 30 से 170) लगभग 8.0 MeV पर है, और हल्के (A < 30) तथा भारी (A > 170) नाभिकों के लिए मान कम हैं। Ebn curve ka ek lamba flat middle part (A = 30 se 170) lagbhag 8.0 MeV par hai, aur light (A < 30) aur heavy (A > 170) nuclei ke liye values kam hain. Binding energy jitni zyada, bound system ka total mass utna kam. Isliye jab bhi kam total binding energy wale nuclei zyada binding energy wale nuclei mein badalte hain, net energy release hoti hai. Aisa tab hota hai jab heavy nucleus intermediate-mass fragments mein toot-ta hai (fission) ya light nuclei milkar heavier nucleus banaate hain (fusion).Moving towards the peak of the curve — by splitting heavy nuclei or joining light ones — gives out energy.
Burning coal or petroleum is an exothermic chemical reaction: energies of a few electron volts per atom. A nuclear reaction involves energies of the order of MeV per nucleus. So for the same amount of matter, nuclear sources give about a million times more energy. Fission of 1 kg of uranium gives about 10¹⁴ J; burning 1 kg of coal gives about 10⁷ J.कोयला या पेट्रोलियम जलाना एक ऊष्माक्षेपी रासायनिक अभिक्रिया है: प्रति परमाणु कुछ इलेक्ट्रॉन वोल्ट ऊर्जा। Coal ya petroleum jalaana ek exothermic chemical reaction hai: per atom kuch electron volts energy. Nuclear reaction mein per nucleus MeV order ki energy hoti hai. Isliye utne hi matter se nuclear sources lagbhag million guna zyada energy dete hain. 1 kg uranium ke fission se lagbhag 10¹⁴ J milta hai; 1 kg coal jalaane se lagbhag 10⁷ J.
Fission
Beyond natural radioactive decay, we can bombard nuclei with protons, neutrons, α-particles etc. and study nuclear reactions. The most important neutron-induced reaction is fission: a uranium-235 nucleus hit by a neutron breaks into two intermediate-mass fragments, for exampleप्राकृतिक रेडियोऐक्टिव क्षय से आगे, हम नाभिकों पर प्रोटॉन, न्यूट्रॉन, α-कण आदि की बौछार कर नाभिकीय अभिक्रियाओं का अध्ययन कर सकते हैं। Sabse important neutron-induced reaction fission hai: neutron se takraaya uranium-235 nucleus do intermediate-mass fragments mein toot jaata hai, jaiseA neutron hits uranium-235, which splits into two medium-sized nuclei plus a few neutrons and a lot of energy.
→ 14456Ba + 8936Kr + 3 10n
The same reaction can give other pairs of fragments:यही अभिक्रिया खंडों के अन्य युग्म भी दे सकती है:Yahi reaction fragments ke doosre pairs bhi de sakti hai:
→ 13351Sb + 9941Nb + 4 10n
→ 14054Xe + 9438Sr + 2 10n
The fragments are radioactive nuclei; they emit β-particles one after another until they reach stable end products. Fragments radioactive nuclei hote hain; stable end products banne tak wo ek ke baad ek β-particles emit karte hain.
How much energy? The energy released (the Q value) is about 200 MeV per fissioning nucleus. Estimate: let a nucleus with A = 240 break into two fragments of A = 120. Ebn for A = 240 is about 7.6 MeV; for the A = 120 fragments about 8.5 MeV. Gain in binding energy per nucleon ≈ 0.9 MeV, so the total gain ≈ 240 × 0.9 = 216 MeV (see the energy ladder). A = 240 के लिए Ebn लगभग 7.6 MeV; A = 120 के खंडों के लिए लगभग 8.5 MeV। Kitni energy? Release hone wali energy (Q value) per fissioning nucleus lagbhag 200 MeV hai. Estimate: maan lijiye A = 240 wala nucleus A = 120 ke do fragments mein toot-ta hai. A = 240 ke liye Ebn lagbhag 7.6 MeV; A = 120 ke fragments ke liye lagbhag 8.5 MeV. Per nucleon binding energy mein gain ≈ 0.9 MeV, to total gain ≈ 240 × 0.9 = 216 MeV (energy ladder dekhiye).
This energy first appears as kinetic energy of the fragments and neutrons, and is finally passed to the surrounding matter as heat. Nuclear reactors that produce electricity get their energy from fission. The enormous energy of an atom bomb comes from uncontrolled fission. Ye energy pehle fragments aur neutrons ki kinetic energy ke roop mein dikhti hai, aur aakhir mein aas-paas ke matter ko heat ke roop mein milti hai.
Choose a fission or fusion reaction from this chapter. The masses before and after give Q = (initial mass − final mass) × 931.5 MeV. Then set the amount of fuel and see the total energy, compared with burning coal. Is chapter ki koi fission ya fusion reaction chuniye. Pehle aur baad ke masses se Q = (initial mass − final mass) × 931.5 MeV milta hai. Phir fuel ki quantity chuniye aur total energy dekhiye, coal jalaane se comparison ke saath.
Why one neutron leads to many fissions (beyond the book). Each fission gives 2–3 new neutrons. If, on average, at least one of them causes another fission, the process sustains itself — a chain reaction. In a reactor, control rods absorb the extra neutrons to keep exactly one per fission (steady power); in a bomb the chain grows without control. Ek neutron se kai fissions kyun (book se aage). Har fission 2–3 naye neutrons deta hai. Agar average mein inmein se kam se kam ek doosra fission karaaye, to process khud chalta rehta hai — chain reaction. Reactor mein control rods extra neutrons sokh leti hain taaki per fission theek ek neutron bache (steady power); bomb mein chain bina control badhti hai.
In India: nuclear power stations such as Tarapur (Maharashtra) and Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu) turn the heat from fission into electricity — the same 200 MeV per uranium nucleus you just calculated, billions of billions of times every second. India mein: Tarapur (Maharashtra) aur Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu) jaise nuclear power stations fission ki heat ko bijli mein badalte hain — wahi 200 MeV per uranium nucleus jo aapne abhi nikaala, har second arbon-arbon baar.
Nuclear fusion – taaron mein energy generation
When two light nuclei fuse into a larger nucleus, energy is released, because the larger nucleus is more tightly bound (Fig. 13.1). Jab do light nuclei milkar ek bada nucleus banaate hain, to energy release hoti hai, kyunki bada nucleus zyada tightly bound hai (Fig. 13.1). Examples:
For fusion, the two nuclei must come close enough for the attractive short-range nuclear force to act. But both are positive, so they repel: they need enough energy to get over this Coulomb barrier. Its height depends on the charges and radii of the nuclei; for two protons it is about 400 keV (barrier), and higher for nuclei with more charge. The temperature at which protons in a gas would have this much energy on average:संलयन के लिए दोनों नाभिकों को इतना पास आना होगा कि आकर्षी लघु-परासी नाभिकीय बल काम कर सके। Par dono positive hain, isliye wo repel karte hain: is Coulomb barrier ko paar karne ke liye unhe kaafi energy chahiye. Iski height nuclei ke charges aur radii par depend karti hai; do protons ke liye ye lagbhag 400 keV hai (barrier), aur zyada charge wale nuclei ke liye zyada. Wo temperature jis par gas ke protons ki average energy itni ho:Positive nuclei push each other away. To fuse, they must be very hot — millions of degrees.
Fusion achieved by raising the temperature so that particles have enough kinetic energy to overcome Coulomb repulsion is called thermonuclear fusion. It is the source of energy in the interior of stars. The Sun’s core is at about 1.5 × 10⁷ K — much less than 3 × 10⁹ K. So fusion in the Sun involves the protons whose energies are much above the average. Temperature badhaakar — taaki particles ke paas Coulomb repulsion paar karne laayak kinetic energy ho — kiye gaye fusion ko thermonuclear fusion kehte hain. Ye stars ke andar energy ka source hai.
How do protons in the Sun manage it? Two things help: (1) in a hot gas a tiny fraction of protons is far faster than average (the high-energy tail of the speed distribution), and (2) quantum mechanics lets a proton tunnel through the barrier without climbing all the way over it. That is why the Sun burns slowly and steadily for billions of years. Sun mein protons ye kaise kar paate hain? Do cheezein madad karti hain: (1) garam gas mein protons ka bahut chhota hissa average se kahin zyada tez hota hai (speed distribution ki high-energy tail), aur (2) quantum mechanics proton ko barrier ke upar poora chadhe bina uske aar-paar tunnel karne deti hai.
In the Sun, hydrogen is “burned” into helium in several steps — the proton–proton (p, p) cycle:सूर्य में हाइड्रोजन कई चरणों में हीलियम में “जलता” है — प्रोटॉन–प्रोटॉन (p, p) चक्र:Sun mein hydrogen kai steps mein helium mein “jalta” hai — proton–proton (p, p) cycle:

- (ii) e⁺ + e⁻ → γ + γ + 1.02 MeV(ii) e⁺ + e⁻ → γ + γ + 1.02 MeV(ii) e⁺ + e⁻ → γ + γ + 1.02 MeV

For step (iv), steps (i)–(iii) must happen twice, giving two ³He nuclei. Adding 2(i) + 2(ii) + 2(iii) + (iv): 2(0.42) + 2(1.02) + 2(5.49) + 12.86 = 26.72 ≈ 26.7 MeV, and the net effect isचरण (iv) के लिए चरण (i)–(iii) दो बार होने चाहिए, जिससे दो ³He नाभिक बनें। 2(i) + 2(ii) + 2(iii) + (iv) Step (iv) ke liye steps (i)–(iii) do baar hone chahiye, jisse do ³He nuclei banein. 2(i) + 2(ii) + 2(iii) + (iv) jodne par: 2(0.42) + 2(1.02) + 2(5.49) + 12.86 = 26.72 ≈ 26.7 MeV, aur net effect hai
Helium is not the only element made in stars. When the core’s hydrogen turns to helium, the core cools, the star collapses under its own gravity and the core heats up again. At about 10⁸ K, helium nuclei fuse into carbon. Step by step, heavier elements can form — but not elements beyond the peak of the binding-energy curve, because fusing those would not release energy. Taaron mein sirf helium hi nahi banta. Jab core ka hydrogen helium mein badal jaata hai, to core thanda hota hai, taara apni hi gravity se sikudta hai aur core phir garam ho jaata hai. Lagbhag 10⁸ K par helium nuclei fuse hokar carbon banaate hain. Isi tarah step by step bhaari elements ban sakte hain — par binding-energy curve ke peak se aage ke elements nahi, kyunki unke fusion se energy release nahi hoti.
The Sun is about 5 × 10⁹ years old and has enough hydrogen to keep shining for about another 5 billion years. After that, hydrogen burning will stop, the Sun will cool and collapse, its core temperature will rise, and its outer envelope will swell — turning it into a red giant. Sun lagbhag 5 × 10⁹ saal purana hai aur uske paas lagbhag 5 billion saal aur chamakne laayak hydrogen hai. Uske baad hydrogen ka jalna ruk jaayega, Sun thanda hokar sikudega, uske core ka temperature badhega, aur uska bahari envelope phool jaayega — wo ek red giant ban jaayega.
Controlled thermonuclear fusion
A thermonuclear fusion device tries to copy the star on Earth: heat the fuel to about 10⁸ K and get steady power. At such temperatures the fuel is a mixture of positive ions and electrons — a plasma. The challenge is to confine the plasma, since no container can stand such a high temperature. Several countries, including India, are developing techniques for this. If they succeed, fusion reactors could supply almost unlimited power. Ek thermonuclear fusion device Earth par taare ki nakal karne ki koshish karti hai: fuel ko lagbhag 10⁸ K tak garam karke steady power paana. Itne temperature par fuel positive ions aur electrons ka mixture — plasma — hota hai. Challenge plasma ko confine (thaame) rakhne ka hai, kyunki koi container itna zyada temperature nahi seh sakta. India sahit kai desh iski techniques develop kar rahe hain.

(a) Are the equations of nuclear reactions (such as those in Section 13.7) “balanced” in the sense a chemical equation (e.g. 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O) is? If not, in what sense are they balanced? (a) A chemical equation is balanced in the sense that the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides; a chemical reaction only rearranges atoms. In a nuclear reaction elements can be transmuted, so atoms of each element need not be conserved. But the number of protons and the number of neutrons are separately conserved — e.g. in Eq. 13.10 both sides have 92 protons and 144 neutrons. (Strictly, at very high energies what is conserved is total charge and total “baryon number”.)(a) (a) Chemical equation is sense mein balanced hai ki dono taraf har element ke atoms ki sankhya same hai; chemical reaction sirf atoms ko rearrange karti hai. Nuclear reaction mein elements transmute ho sakte hain, isliye har element ke atoms conserve hon, ye zaroori nahi. Par protons ki sankhya aur neutrons ki sankhya alag-alag conserve rehti hain — jaise Eq. 13.10 mein dono taraf 92 protons aur 144 neutrons hain. (Strictly, bahut high energies par total charge aur total “baryon number” conserve rehte hain.)
(b) The binding energy of a nucleus makes a negative contribution to its mass (the mass defect). Since proton and neutron numbers are conserved, the total rest mass of the protons and neutrons is the same on both sides. But the total binding energy of the nuclei on the left need not equal that on the right. The difference appears as energy released or absorbed. Since binding energy contributes to mass, we say the difference in total mass of the nuclei on the two sides is converted into energy (or vice versa).(b) (b) Nucleus ki binding energy uske mass mein negative contribution deti hai (mass defect). Kyunki proton aur neutron numbers conserve hain, dono taraf protons aur neutrons ka total rest mass same hai. Par left side ke nuclei ki total binding energy right side ke barabar ho, ye zaroori nahi. Ye difference release ya absorb hone wali energy ke roop mein dikhta hai. Kyunki binding energy mass mein contribute karti hai, hum kehte hain ki dono taraf ke nuclei ke total mass ka difference energy mein badalta hai (ya ulta).
(c) In principle a chemical reaction is just like a nuclear one. The energy released or absorbed comes from the difference in chemical binding energies of atoms and molecules on the two sides — and chemical binding energy also gives a (negative) mass defect. So the difference in total mass of the reactants and products is converted into energy here too. But chemical mass defects are about a million times smaller than nuclear ones — far too small to notice — which is why people wrongly think mass–energy conversion does not happen in chemical reactions.(c) (c) Principle mein chemical reaction bhi nuclear reaction jaisi hi hai. Release ya absorb hone wali energy dono taraf ke atoms aur molecules ki chemical binding energies ke difference se aati hai — aur chemical binding energy bhi (negative) mass defect deti hai. Isliye yahan bhi reactants aur products ke total mass ka difference energy mein badalta hai. Par chemical mass defects nuclear se lagbhag million guna chhote hote hain — notice karne laayak bhi nahi — isiliye log galti se maan lete hain ki chemical reactions mein mass–energy conversion nahi hota.

Mass of the nucleus ≈ A × m (m ≈ 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ kg, the mass of one nucleon). Volume = (4/3)πR³ = (4/3)πR₀³A. Density ρ = Am / [(4/3)πR₀³A] = 3m/(4πR₀³) — A cancels, so ρ is the same for all nuclei. Numerically ρ = 3 × 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ / (4π × (1.2 × 10⁻¹⁵)³) ≈ 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³. आयतन = (4/3)πR³ = (4/3)πR₀³A। Nucleus ka mass ≈ A × m (m ≈ 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ kg, ek nucleon ka mass). Volume = (4/3)πR³ = (4/3)πR₀³A. Density ρ = Am / [(4/3)πR₀³A] = 3m/(4πR₀³) — A cancel ho jaata hai, isliye ρ saare nuclei ke liye same hai. Numerically ρ = 3 × 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ / (4π × (1.2 × 10⁻¹⁵)³) ≈ 2.3 × 10¹⁷ kg m⁻³.
