NCERT Section 13.7 · Class 12 Physics · Chapter 13 · interactive diagram
Parts and what they mean
- Burning 1 kg of coal (1 kg कोयला जलाना) — ≈ 10⁷ J. Chemical reactions involve energies of a few eV per atom.
- Fission of 1 kg of uranium (1 kg यूरेनियम का विखंडन) — ≈ 10¹⁴ J (NCERT) — about 10 million times coal, because nuclear reactions involve MeV per nucleus.
- Converting 1 kg of mass entirely (1 kg द्रव्यमान का पूर्ण रूपांतरण) — E = mc² = 1 × (3 × 10⁸)² = 9 × 10¹⁶ J. Fission converts only about 0.1% of the mass.
